Experimental Shirt : “Dancers”

One of the best things about the practice of dyeing fabrics with plant dyes is if something turns out underwhelming, or overly pale, one can at least add more layers of color. This shirt has been through a lot of dye tests, many layers of color has been added to this cotton tank to build a more interesting composition. 

Initially I dyed this shirt with avocado pits, a pale dusty pink. Beautiful but very subtle. I then dipped it in indigo with a few clothespins. Still wasn’t quite finished looking.

Next, during a printing session, I remembered that avocado pits naturally contain tannin, so I decided to print iron oxide ink directly onto the shirt and sure enough, the tan colored ink darkened visibly on its own, without the need for a tannin or dung bath (required for fabrics that haven’t yet been treated with tannin). 

The fourth phase of this shirt I sprinkled fire ash, iron crystals, orange peel, and washing soda over the wetted shirt to see how I might develop other color variation.

Experimenting is a cornerstone of design for me. Avoiding ruts of monotonous production and maintaining a playful, curious approach is how I stay awake and feel like I am evolving. So much of the dye process is trying out new ideas while standing on a foundation of gratitude and appreciation for the existing knowledge and wisdom shared by the elders and leaders of natural dyeing practices.
