PPCO (Pluses, Potentials, Concerns, Overcoming Concerns)

PPCO technique it is an approach to judge ideas affirmatively. PPCO is a tool that helps you improve on an idea in a structured manner, and learn how to give better feedback to an idea you are evaluating:

Pluses: What are (at least) three things you like about the idea?

Potentials: What are (at least) three good things that might result if the idea were implemented?

Concerns: What are some concerns you have about the idea (phrased as a question starting with “How to…” or “How might…”)

Options or Overcome the concerns: What are some ideas you have for how to fix the concerns you just noted?

WHICH PROFESSIONS PRACTICE THIS MODEL Engineers, Scientists, and Technologists

HOW IT DIFFERS FROM THE OTHER MODELS In an engineering context PPCo is often used when a decision has been made and data is required in preparation for the action phase of a project, looking to take the concepts into feasible ideas. PPCo is often used in association with a root cause analysis.

Benefits of PPCo

Strengthens or evaluates an idea

Avoids premature idea-killing by using the principle of “Praise First”

Develops ways to overcome an idea’s weaknesses

Works on single ideas

Creates motivation by looking at ways to overcome challenges

WHERE IT EXCELS? PPCo is best used when reviewing ideas or during creative thinking activities, using a SWOT can be taken to be an overly negative approach, so many now look at reviewing creative ideas with a different perspective. PPCO is one such approach.

WHERE IT FALLS SHORT? The concern is that with many of the mostly positive based methodologies it is more about helping the proponent to feel good than it is to carry out an honest review.

There are three popular affirmative idea evaluation techniques. Any of these will explore more about an idea.  They complement how different people think, but all deliver similar results.

PPCo – Pluses, Potential, Concerns, …brainstorm what might overcome the concerns

LCOb – Likes, Concerns, Opportunities…brainstorm the possibilities

ALUo – Advantages, Limitations, Unique connection criteria, brainstorm what might overcome the limitations

FGCU to Offer Small Business Cybersecurity Academy

Florida Gulf Coast’s Lutgert College of Business (Information Systems and Operations Management) and Small Business Development Center, announces it will be co-sponsoring a two-day Small Business Cybersecurity Academy for businesses in SWFL. The Academy has been developed with the support of local cybersecurity executives, FGCU faculty, FGCU’s SBDC and the University of Texas- San Antonio where a similar program has been conducted. The Academy is being partially funded by a grant from Cyber Florida.   Expert course instructors will include Ralph Quarles, Assistant VP, Operational Risk at Wells Fargo, Andrew Cooper, Executive Director, IT at Naples Community Hospital, Dr. Robert Totterdale, Professor at FGCU LCOB-CIS and Marc Farron, IT Consultant with SBDC@ FGCU

The Academy has been designed to help businesses assess their cybersecurity health and preparedness, identify cybersecurity risks and threats, and to begin the development of action plans for securing information. Additionally, the course will provide participants with an understanding of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and how their organizations can better meet cyber compliance requirements.  It is designed for IT professionals and executive/managers with responsibility for cybersecurity in mid-market companies.
