hello my dears... planthopper today

this wasn't my first time seeing this dude! (Salurnis marginella) is pretty recognisable with a flat, leaflike body. along with some 'burnt' colouration along the edges of its body
however. this was the first and only photo ive gotten of it... they hop and fly at the slightest hint of trouble and so ive found them difficult to capture

Graphocephala coccinea is quite the standout! I've always known these guys colloquially as candy-striped leafhoppers but iNaturalist is telling me they're called red-banded leafhoppers. :/ agree to disagree, I guess.
This first batch has already hopped off to new homes but there will definitely be more in the future!

Red-banded Leafhopper (Graphocephala coccinea), taken May 21, 2025, in Georgia, US
I've begun seeing G. coccinea about! This leafhopper's patterning is quite variable, often overlapping with the patterning of G. fennahi, the Rhododendron Leafhopper, and making it hard to ID. If the leafhopper has any hint of an isolated stripe on the wing (seen very clearly in this image), it is G. coccinea, as G. fennahi's stripe connects fully to the edge of the wing. It can also be helpful to check if the leafhopper is feeding on the plant it sits on and documenting what the plant is, as G. fennahi is only known to feed on rhododendron species while G. coccinea is far less picky and feeds from a wide variety of herbaceous plants!

Dismantle stealth bombers, invest in Stealth Sharpshooters (they don't do anything war-like, they're just little guys in the grass 🖤)

Oooh even cooler, this is a rare Florida endemic: Neoslossonia putnami!

Mothing sheet highlight: this guy! Recently had the joy to contribute an iNaturalist first, meaning the very first observation of this species on iNaturalist worldwide was by me. There are now 10 observations of it, because I proceeded to post 9 more, these guys seem to love my sheet. Not my first worldwide first, but the first one I've had actually local to me. I've typed first so many times it doesn't look like a real word anymore

Years ago I drew a few leafhoppers for an exercise at school. These are still the most popular thing I have ever posted on the internet. So I drew some more and made a poster. These little guys are very fun! finding all their scientific names was a pain though!

hello my dears... cat-eared treehopper today

featuring a planthopper from the genus (Tricentrus) these guys usually have three horns on their heads... although this individual only appears to have two. i believe this one is non morphospecific and cannot be ided to species

frequently seen on the leaves and stems of wild bushes and can be gently picked up if youre stealthy enough
the horns always looked like cat ears to me. which makes me find them extra cute

Another leafhopper to check off the species list: Tylozygus bifidus! Like a lot of leafhoppers, these guys are small-to-tiny in real life and blend in well with all kinds of plants. I love catching a glimpse of these striped beauties when I stop and smell the roses!
