#JackedKirby - Earthquake at The Baxter Building!!! 💥💥💥 There are few opening splash pages that I love more than the one that opens #Issue31 of the Fantastic Four (October of 1964). While the issue Itself isn’t so hot... this opening splash is PHENOMENAL!!! 💥💥💥 The issue opens up with the Fab 4 at home when an Earthquake rocks NYC. Jack decides to show them being tossed around the living room of the Baxter Building, with household items and furniture flying around the heroes as they try to use their powers to solve the problem!!! 💥💥💥 This issue sees the return of the Mole Man, and also the first appearance of Sue and Johnny’s dad Franklin Storm. But even with all that packed in it’s a pretty humdrum Issue... but this opening page is loaded with ACTION!!! 💥💥💥 On another note, check out the credit box on the opening page (pic 2) which taps Stan Lee as the “WRITER” and Jack Kirby as the “ILLUSTRATOR”. This ever changing title for Jack fluctuated regularly, with Issue 30 saying “Drawn By” And Issue 32 saying “ILLUSTRATIONS BY”. Kirby’s credits changed a lot... but Stan’s always stayed exactly the same. #JackedKirby - Introducing... THE SKRULLS!!! 💥💥💥 The Skrulls have long been thorns in the sides of the heroes of Marvel Comics, dating as far back as #Issue2 of the Fantastic Four (January of 1962) and coming in all shapes and sizes throughout the years. Primarily played as bad guy shape shifting aliens, these green goblin look-alikes have caused tons of trouble throughout the years for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes... and now they are a focal in the new Captain Marvel movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!!! 💥💥💥 The Skrulls have had many a retcon to their overall story, but mostly they are evildoers who utilize their ability to shape shift and “sim” another person to manipulate a situation to their advantage. Jack drew them a bit more impish then they would eventually come to be known, with his early versions of the characters from FF Issue 2 resembling what would become Ditko’s Green Goblin a lot... maybe Stunning Steve was inspired a bit by his Bullpen brethren Jack? 💥💥💥 We see the “sim” process being executed by a Skrull in Pic 3 of this post, utilizing power lines and vibration to simulate the change. We also see Reed dispatching this group of Skrulls by forcing them to change into cows, and then hypnotizing them to maintain a peaceful life here on earth (Pic 6). #JackedKirby - The House Ad that Sold a Million Comics!!!! 💥💥💥 Here is a house ad that ran in #Issue1 of the Incredible Hulk (published in May of 1962). It is referencing Fantastic Four #Issue1 which had came out a few months earlier but was still being milked for al they could get out of it. 💥💥💥 The book was becoming a huge hit, and by #Issue3 of the FF it had been given the title “The Greatest Comic Book Magazine in the WORLD!” By Stan Lee. As they began to roll out new comics (like the solo Hulk book this ad was featured in!) they began cross promoting their big sellers to broaden their appeal. This helped establish the characters as living in a connected company structure... something Kirby & Lee has envisioned for the future of their creations. 💥💥💥 Notice the ad for Amazing Adult Fantasy, an anthology book at the time that was facing floundering sales and Lee hoped to invigorate with an association to the more popular FF and Hulk characters. The magazine would continue to founder, but it would eventually launch Spider-Man with #Issue15... another monumental moment in the Marvel Universe! 💥💥💥 I recently saw this ad in the @twomorrowspubs book Stuff Said and then also found it referenced by @rand.hoppe of the @kirbymuseum in an online article. #JackedKirby - That beard ain't gonna shave itself!!! Kirby and Lee's Nick Fury run on Strange Tales is full of amazing technology and gadgetry that have long been associated with S.H.I.E.L.D. to this very day... and a huge amount of opening splash pages featuring our titular hero! #Issue153 was published in February of 1967 and features an awesome story called The Hiding Place. While the story is typical Fury nuttiness, you have to love the random opening splashes that Jack sprinkles in! The book opens with Nick Fury reading a newspaper while sitting in a barber's chair. His ever present eye patch is there... and he has a face full of shaving cream awaiting the straight edge. But the thing that jumps out off the page has to be the fact that Fury is SMOKING A CIGAR WITH A FACE FULL OF SHAVING CREAM!!! And it's lit!!! Only Jack would do something like this... amazing. #JackedKirby - The End Of An Era! . It seemed like it would last forever, but nothing ever does. Jack and Stan had worked for 108 straight issues (102 regular, 6 annuals) together on the Fantastic Four, and with #Issue102 in September if 1970 it was finally the end! . In an adventure that brought back an old enemy in Namor, an unfamiliar enemy in Magneto and all types of impending war Jack left it all on the pages with this one. I love the action and adventure in this one, and although it is sad that it was over it was good to see Jack go out on such a high note! . One thing that stands out to me is the final panel that Jack drew on this last page. It’s a close up of the alarm that is alerting the FF of inbound warships... there is something magical and technical about Jack’s alarm screen design. It si so simple but looks so complex... and it’s loaded with Kirby Krackle.
