Karl goes the other way, runs backwards, does not take the gift he was given by Scalise.

What you need to know about that, is both Scalise and Karl set that up, it’s about the cry for help I sent to the Biden White House, and, by extension is also about the same kind of cry for help I sent to the Trump White House just over for years ago. They are using “news Anchor insider tactic” in such a way as to say that this account here at Tumblr that you are reading, contains the kind of information that is not available any where else on earth. It’s Unobtainium. Karl’s refusal to take the golden oportunity is a message sent to others, one that specifies the desired result, that is to make sure that no one can see the information presented on this [email protected] account of eye-witness terror.

The two suggest a distraction, a “look the other way” sort of command to terror operatives who are also part of the national security chain of command.

It’s a double header though, because those three linked tweets also spell out a hit to be done at the DMV when I go there to renew my drivers license.

Watch the linked videos, where you see the color green, you are seeing instructions to use nitrous oxide gas as a weapon in similar places when the school student murders take place.

Where you see the color red in those videos, that is instructions that spell out where the protected killing areas are going to be in place, where the murderers will have cover from the State Police, the police fake, are from Canada, are Royal Canadian Mounted Police disguised as State Police, and they protect the murderers of the US Children, in favor of replacing all of the children with their own Canadian terror army children, the same way they did in the Oregon schools in around 1998 - 2005.

They killed the elementary students first, the middle schools later, and the high school students were killed and replaced last, when the terror attacked the Three Rivers School District, it may be done differently in other school districts.

The terror army simply moves from state to state, city to city, killing and replacing the state police with help from SAG shill elected state governors. Then, once all of the law enforcement has been replaced with SAG and Canadian terror operatives, they just start slaughtering the children, and the general population is also killed as a result of taking over the schools.

I strongly advise to be very suspicious of Freeway and other major infrastructure upgrade projects, road building, bridge replacement, other major city and state infrastructure projects nation-wide at this time. Those kind of projects are used as the basis of manpower and for disposal of dead victims. They serve as distraction, confusion, road-block, detour generators that make it far more difficult to detect that any mass murdering is happening. Those kinds of projects cause delay and danger for investigative persons, who are easily detoured into traps set the Department of Transportation workers.

In Oregon, there was a ten year long project that was used in parallel to the mass murder slaughter of the population between 1996 and 2006 when all of the bridges in Oregon were removed and replaced, a massive undertaking in more ways than one. After that, Beta Twitter was used as a command vehicle to role out the Corona Virus Phase of the slaughter, for eliminating the other remaining US Citizens who were not killed by other means when the schools, grocery stores, courts were hijacked, and the Oregon Bridge Project from 1996 - 2006 was used before hand as an orchestrated combination plate of terror slaughter.

Local Conditions:

Local conditions are made difficult to say as my computer is about six different kinds of hijacked after venturing out for a short walk to the mailbox in the wake of sending a request to the White House for help to stop terrorism and mass murders of millions of people in Oregon last week.

I took a short walk, observed that my heater compressor outside is still completely caked with ice surrounding the unit, worse than before, and it’s not really all that cold outside.

I went towards the driveway where it gets near the Offensive Monroe Surveillance Travel Trailer, and there I saw a new terror operative sitting on a bench while watching the activities of a small black & white rabbit as it was eating something from a basket in a cage out front of that Travel Trailer. The woman there has been there in the past, a few years ago with the same rabbit in the same cage with the same Easter Basket.

She is best described as a young George Castanza, from Sienfeld fame as far as a physical description goes. The woman has short brown hair cut like a boys hair cut, had glasses on, and was wearing a black sweatshirt and black sweat pants.

I could see there was some small pink flags in the roadway ahead from there, so, I went on my way to the mailbox, and saw that there are some pink ribbons lining the east side of Jackpine from the corner where the trashcans are, to the Clyde Baum terror cell at 333 Jackpine, maybe beyond that. The ribbons are low on the ground, and are accompanied with the kind of small marking flags that are used by contractors for marking out where excavation or trenching is to be done, so, there must be some Pacific Power Thompson toting Pac-Pow trucks nearby with those Trench Markers there across the street from my driveway like that.

After five days of not going to the mailbox, or going outdoors at all in fear of retribution from the Joe Biden White House for having reported terrorism and mass murder, there was no US Postal Mail inside my mailbox, there was, however, one card, the kind that a traveling salesman puts on the doorknob to say they came by the house, a “Door Hanger Card” (Ron Howard Sponsored Master Class Advertisement) from Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. The door hanger card was left in the mailbox. It says “You have important legal documents awaiting you at Josephine County Sheriff’s Office” and goes on to say in hand written lettering that the Important Documents are concerning Grand Jury participation.

I am guessing the Sheriff heard from Ron Howard at One Hour Martinizer HQ at Nancy Sinatra’s Pacific Palisades Basement where she keeps her personal kidnapped surgically altered pet people. I suspect Ron Howard & Company are upset that they have been called out as the terrorists that they truly are, responsible for the World Trade Center Terror Attack on September 11, 2001 when Screen Actor Guild arranged that the towers would be demolished as a distraction while they attacked the Pentagon with a parallel set of events there.

So, I took that from the mailbox and returned to my house.

I wanted to take a photo of that woman who looks like George Castanza, a young one, and got my phone to take a photo, and returned to where I could take a photo, but she was gone, and the rabbit was still in the cage there.

Then, I was surprised to see Jeff Monroe!

He must have healed from his wounds from the last time he attacked me at my house, or, from attacking me at the Walmart, I can’t recall which was the last time Jeff Monroe attacked me and was hurt real bad in defense.

Jeff Monroe was hosing off a Remote Control Hobby car, and orange one, was big, about 24 inches long, about 10 inches wide, and was wearing a black hoodie sweatshirt as per usual, and blue jeans. Jeff looks a lot like Frank Beard of ZZ Top for a description, shorter hair.

They are using all of that stuff I explained there to discount the reports I make here, one such thing is the real full size actual vehicles that are fitted with remote control, the ones with automatic transmissions and factory cruise control are fitted with remote control operation around here, all of the local terror cells have at least one remote control full size automobile, not a toy car like Jeff Monroe wants you to think I was referring to.

That rabbit is going to be used to cover the eye-witness of the Dog Catcher Truck I saw take Peter Sparacino away in many years ago, by men with whips who attacked him in front of my house at the mailboxes, and put him inside of the cages on the Dog Catcher Truck, which was full of other people who also had been put int the cages on that truck.

It’s also notable that the 545 Jackpine Mailbox that belongs to the Sparcino terror cell has been taken off of the plank where the mailboxes have all been since way before I moved to the nieghborhood 24 years ago. Sparacino terror cell are using the family name of Peter Sparacino, after he was killed, and they stole his house, and all of his belongings. That happened more than twenty years ago, and no one will send help despite all of these reports of terrorism.

Same is true about Clyde Baum at 333 Jackpine. He killed Red Powers who owned that property free & clear like Peter Sparacino did. Clyde killed Red, and held Dolly Powers captive in her home for about five years before he killed her. Clyde used her for a lot of things, to get county aid, for drugs by taking her to the doctors, and for a place to live while controling her with protection from imposter police, so, Dolly Powers as an elderly woman in her 80′s had to do exactly as she was told when Clyde Baum took her for the doctor appointments and to sign up for county and state handouts of various kinds.

(Clyde Baum also has connection to Monsanto Agrochemical Corporation, and has access to modified seeds, and uses those in complicated ways at a State and Federal level of International Commerce sort of agricultural terrorism)

So, the rabbit in the cage will serve as an explanation made to federal agents to cover up the men who use cages on trucks to haul Victims away. It works because the federal agents insist on being fooled all of the time, they absolutely refuse to refrain from being fools, and continue to trust the local authorities, who are not authorities, but are a terror cell that killed and replaced the local authorities a long, long, long, long, long time ago.

I also noticed that the small camera at Monroe’s Four-Three-Four, on that thin wire stand on the stump that has been pointed at my gate for about two months, is gone, and the telescope on the tripod remains there, just has been moved back slightly farther away, but is still pointed at my driveway gate.

There are many cameras there at Monroe’s that are used to wage attacks on me when they can see that I am outside, and am within range of a cross-bow, gun, or vehicle. or vehicle with gun mounted in the front grill.

So, it took some time to run scans and reset the modem, and turn the computer on and off a couple of times to say Local Conditions, but there you go, as long as the “Save Post” button is not disabled, this will post after I say:

More notable conditions observed at the Four-Three-Four (Monroe terror cell) from my driveway while on a walk to the mailbox earlier today:

First, I need to express with great emphasis that Monroe (434 Jackpine Drive) terror cell at Four-Three-Four Jackpine (Drive, Grants Pass, Oregon 97526) clearly has access to the same people that I need to reach for help. I can see by their daily activities that the things they do, items they use in the yard on display, and visitors to that Offensive Trailer there are all used to help them use what I write to fool the federal agents I need to reach, but am unable to having been outnumbered 50,000 to 1 in Josephine County. I am the last remaining US Citizen that has not been killed or taken into more confining captivity. I am held captive in my home by the Monroe terror cell, and all of the other residences in the surrounding area, which are also terror cells of various origin throughout the county. My phone is made to only reach phone numbers that the terror army wants me to reach, ones that will aid them in killing me, or, to further fool the federal agents. The Centurylink Internet Service I use is hijacked at their base of operations, and the phone lines themselves don’t go to the addresses mapped at Centurylink ISP, all of that is explained in great detail here on this account in many places. So, I can’t reach where I need to reach, and the phone only rings when the terror army wants it to ring.

So, those other observations:

As I looked at the heater compressor in the backyard, I heard the sound of the small wheeled motorcycles that belong to a large terror cell composed of many disposable kidnapped US Children that was at the Chapman terror cell at 3701 Russell Road and rode away as I looked at the heating unit.

Then as I got close to where that Offensive Trailer is at along my driveway, that is when another, bigger motorcycle started up, revved and drove away from the Strong terror cell at 3747 Russell Road. That is the time that I observed the woman on the picnic bench out by the Offensive Travel Trailer.

I noticed some new additional items strewn about at Monroe’s backyard. There was some chicken wire fencing that had been torn off of one of the chicken coups there, was all bent up, and in a heap along with the supports the (that) held the wire in place. That one is the smaller of the two chicken coups at Monroe’s, the one that contains so many electronic devices hidden inside.

I noticed that there was a newly installed fencing arrangement at the other, bigger chicken coup that is over there, the one where so many electric lights of all kinds of different bulbs are used to fuck with me when I take a walk, some of them are very bright, all of them are within a chicken coup. The newly installed fence extends the usefulness of that particular chicken coup, the way it looks from 200 feet away as I took that walk, and a green tarp was hung over that new fencing like a drape, makes yet another hiding place for a cross-bow assassin to hide for shooting at me.

(Two separate chicken coups. The kind of thing where egg laying domesticated foul are kept, some say they are “farm animals”, others say “roosters & hens”, where one of the two chicken coups is larger than the other one is. The larger one looks like a puppet show stage modified into a chicken coup, and has many different kinds of electric lighting used at different times inside and nearby the chicken coup. The other chicken coup, the smaller one, also contains some ducks, so, “chicken & duck coup”, it used to be a firewood shed long ago, and that one (the small chicken coup at Monroe terror cell) has audio & video recording equipment operating inside of the “chicken & duck old firewood shed coup”. Is that clear enough?).

As I reached the place where I could see there was someone seated at the picnic bench (at Monroe terror cell, 434 Jackpine Drive), there was a scream, or yell from the main house at 434 in the front part of the Monroe driveway.

When I returned from the mailbox, that woman in the black sweat shirt that looks like George Castanza, was doing what I would call a “Jeff Monroe Routine”. Jeff was often seen in the past using a shovel to “stab” at some dirt near a hole, or, stab at some dirt in a large bucket repeatedly and violently for no apparent reason while adding a variety of other ingredients into the dirt he is stabbing at, as I walk by there. So, today, that woman that looks like George Castanza was doing the “Stab at the dirt in the hole with the shovel” routine. Then, she put the shovel down, went and picked up a bag of some very orange looking potting soil, and dumped all of it out, shaking the bag violently. The odor of fresh manure filled the whole area immediately.

The thing that made me want to do this additional comment is that the woman was doing exactly as Jeff Monroe usually does often with that activity with the shovel, the dirt, the additive into the soil. But not the rabbit in the cage. Jeff Monroe uses goats in a bigger pen, not rabbits, where the goats get their heads stuck in the six inch mesh fencing and can’t get their heads out because of the goat’s horns get stuck like barbs in the fencing, and the goats get all bloody and torn up around their necks after being stuck in the fence for many hours and trying to get their heads out of the fence. Goats scream. They sound like small babies when they scream, it’s horrible to be exposed to this kind of thing everyday, but by comparison to other kidnapped US Citizens around here, I am fortunate that I am able to walk away, from things the others are not able to walk away from. (national security in USA fails to protect by the hour, by the day, by the minute)

It was a “Role Reversal”. I don’t remember where I have seen that woman before outside of that trailer area, but I have seen her somewhere around Grants Pass before.

That remote control car is important to find who owns it. I don’t think it belongs to Monroe’s, I think it belongs to Juseph Myers at 560 Jackpine, who makes a lot of different things that are remote control, including a bird that hops around on the ground, looks injured, has two cameras mounted in it, and can bounce away if you try to pick up the remote controlled injured small bird.

That gal who looked like George Castanza could have been Rena Myers wearing a “Fat Suit”, a whole body suit that is made with real human skin, and a skinny person can put on the Fat Suit and become a fat person as a disguise made at the Juseph Myers terror cell. If so, there is a good chance that the suit is made from the skin of Donald Trump, who exploded in a bus on January 6, 2021 out front of the Grants Pass DMV across from the Fred Meyer store where Kyle Myers works as a grocery checker, and is a Lieutenant of the SDA Terror army. The Myers at 560 Jackpine have been making wearable costumes from the skin and body parts of the victims they kill for more than twenty years just two doors down the street from my house. I used to be able to see as they tossed the little girls into the shed in the backyard over there, usually by someone on horseback who literally tossed the little girls kidnapped from the Grants Pass Community Church just a half mile or so down the road on Russell Road. The people at 520 Built a big fence in the way, and I no longer have a view of where that shed is at where the little girls are processed by the Myers terror cell.

There is a lot of continued reports on Twitter about that airplane that lost it’s engine cowl, I feel someone is trying to reach me with that.

I once was on commercial flight when the motor caught fire. I took some photos, maybe I still have them somewhere.

So, yeah, shit happens and then no one cares enough to talk about it.

I was another flight when the pilot called me into the cockpit. I still don‘t know why he did that, but out the drivers side window was a US Air-Force fighter jet escorting our flight along on the route. There is a whole bunch more to say about what happened in that cockpit, I’ll just say that the co-pilot flew the airplane the rest of the way after I entered the cockpit.

There was another flight when the pilot was headed straight into some mountains ahead of us, everyone on the airplane began to sort of whisper: “pull up... pull up” .... then louder some of the passengers where saying: “PULL UP!” and I shouted too: “PULL-UP!”. We missed the mountains by a little bit, and kept on going.

There was a different flight when the flight attendants pulled a man from his seat and put him down into a access panel in the floor of the airplane, one between the wings on a L1011 size airplane as we were on approach to Portland airport. On the drive home, there was a big road block near Hillsboro on the I-5, lots of emergency crews there, as I passed by I asked one of them who they had scraped off of the pavement, and told them about the man that was into floor of the airplane: “Did someone happen to fall out of the sky and land on the freeway?”. There was no particular response that I can recall right now, but I think it was like “How did you know that?” kind of response from the emergency worker there.

There was another time when I stopped a shooter from shooting on airplane destined for Portland. Everyone on the plane was rounded up at the airport. I don’t think any of them are alive anymore, I had to run away from that, me and one woman and one ten year old were the only people who got away. It was not a safety thing, it was a forced round up by people other than airport security at Portland International.

Another time all of the oxygen masks came down from the overhead area. There was nothing wrong with the airplane, some young men were in the back of the plane seated farthest back, they all began to get out of their seats after the passengers were instructed to put the masks on. I could see they had weapons so I shouted real loud: “It’s nitrous oxide, any one with a lighter, lite the lighter!” and kept shouting to “look behind you” as those men were in the aisle. Me and at least two others had lighters, and lit them. Those guys all sat back down. There was a “Pop” noise from the luggage compartment area below the passenger area, and the pilot advised to put the masks back up into the overhead place where they came from, and we continued on our way.

no one on the airplane complained about any of that, as if they had all forgotten that anything happened.

TSA, Air Traffic Control, the concession restaurants and vendors at the airports are all occupied and controlled by terror cells. The rental car agencies are also all terror cells. In Las Vegas at McLaren airport, the rental car kiosk area is built intentionally as a killing field. Salt Lake City Utah international airport is built intentionally as a killing field with a system of food vendors combined with “Sky Caps” who do the kill and then cart the bodies away.

There are some secret words that will keep you alive when you order a smoothie in Utah at the airport. I don’t recall what worked though, i guess you had to have been there to know what to say.

This below is exactly the way a typical SDA attack on US Citizen residential home is done.

That guy would be accompanied by about three to six other people who remain out of sight. If there is a smart meter on the electric panel at the residence, the power company terror cell would have already done enough analysis on electric usage at the home to know basically where in the house the victim is at, such as in a laundry room, when the washing machine begins to run, they know that much information in real time as the smart meter is broadcasting all day, all the time as electricity is consumed. So, this guy shows up with some bad weather on an Ivanka Trump Oportunity Zone style attack scenario. The home owner may not like having some asshole out front like that, but watches for a minute, it looks innocent, like a doo gooder is just happens to be in the neighborhood and wants so badly to intrude on other people un-announced, just shows up to randomly go ahead and start to shovel someone else’s snow away because, well heck, that guy just does not have anything else he needs to do at his own house, he’s so good that he already removed all of the snow at his house, racked the front yard, took out the trash, fed the cat, cleared the rain gutters, mowed the grass, made his bed, and made lunch in advance for the whole week, after he went to the grocery store this morning, and had all of that done before ten am, so, he has all kinds of extra time to go do random snow shoveling at other peoples houses, right?

The home owner thinks about all of that, and all seems legit.

So the home owner can relax now, it’s feeling very comfortable all of a sudden, as the nitrous gas is being forced into the back slider, and the bathroom window, while the scent of fresh laundry soap, also inserted into the gas mix in the house, reminds the homeowner to go ahead and do some laundry, as long as there are people helping out around the house and everything. So the laundry or other thing gets started while the owner is enjoying that warm fuzzy, sense safety and neighborly kindness that the nitrous gas provides. When the power company gets the reading that the home owner is in a desired place in the house, that is when the bastards come into the house. They will have already gained the house key through observation over time about where the home owner keeps that outdoor hidden house key, borrowed that long enough to make a copy at the key making machine that is in the garage next to where that guy hangs up his snow shovel every night after a hard day of raping, murdering, torturing, and killing. Then, on Saturday, he goes to confession, to say what loot he and the crew was able to take, and to drop off any small children to the church that may have lived at the home where the nice church goer went to shovel some snow.

They are all connected with blu-tooth communication, and have lots of electronic equipment available for knowing exactly when is the best time to use that hijacked house key to go in right through the front door to make everything appear is if there is no problems in the neighborhood.

In the spring they send a teenager with a lawnmower. In the summer they send someone in a bikini, in the fall they bring rakes, and offer to clear the rain gutters if you don’t mind getting the ladder out of the garage for them first.

We’re going to start a new segment here on the VinePair Podcast, before we get into witty banter, which I always enjoy with the two of you, what we’re drinking this week. We’ve had a lot of listeners email in and ask us what we are drinking so that we can help them discover some of the things they should be drinking. As brief as possible, let’s talk about some of the stuff we’re drinking this week. Erica, why don’t you kick us off, what are you drinking this week?

E: In the past couple of weeks, I have moved into my fall bourbon drinking, and how I like to drink my bourbon is in a Manhattan. And, the thing I’ve been doing, which I think is an amazing trick for people, is mini Manhattans. Instead of making a full Manhattan, I just make a half recipe so it’s like a little tiny guy. Sometimes I just don’t want the calories or the sugar or the alcohol of a full Manhattan, but I’m still getting my fix every night, which I really enjoy. The bourbon that is fueling my Manhattan this week is the Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select. It’s a bottle that I think provides a really good price to value. I think you can find it from $33 to $36, depending on where you’re trying to buy it, but it’s really an awesome bourbon. So I recommend it.

A: That’s awesome. Zach, what about you?

Z: Well, first of all, Erica, I’m impressed that you can apparently settle for a mini Manhattan. I definitely need at least a regular Manhattan, sometimes a maxi Manhattan, whatever the opposite is. I know we’ve talked about this before but I felt compelled the last couple of days, and again will tonight, to drink some Napa wine. What’s going on in Napa right now is really, really devastating losses to some absolute institutions there. And unfortunately the fires there, as of a recording time, are still nowhere near under control, so it’s possible that sadly the toll will be much greater. And, for me, this specific wine that I’m thinking of is from Cain, which is one of my favorite wineries there on Spring Mountain. Unfortunately it was really, really badly damaged the last couple of days. I think all of the 2019 and 2020 vintages were lost. I think the vineyards mostly seemed to be OK as of now, but again, getting details is still tricky. I’m going to have a bottle of Cain Five, which is their flagship wine, tonight. It’s a very classic Bordeaux blend using the five principle Bordeaux varieties. It’s delicious, it’s a bit of a splurge, but I have a couple of bottles in my collection and it just feels like the right thing to do. Chris Howell, the winemaker, is a really lovely guy. I got the opportunity to have dinner with him last year and he did something that winemakers rarely do, that I love, which is he mostly poured other people’s wine. I actually had to coax out of him his own wine. That’s a kind of modesty that maybe I don’t share, but I appreciate, so that’s what I’m drinking.

A: Cain’s amazing, they were on our Top 50 Wines of the Year a few years ago. They were No. 4 for Cain Five. That wine is really amazing, it’s a huge bummer that everyone’s going through that. Thanks for taking us down, Zach, but it was necessary. I don’t know if I’ve talked about this yet on the podcast. At the VinePair picnic a few weeks ago, I brought it out for the first time and now I have one in my fridge, which is St. Agrestis. It’s a distillery in New York, they started making Negronis in these beautiful bottles, RTDs (ready to drink), a few years ago, and this year they had the brilliant idea of putting them in a box. So they’re boxed Negronis like boxed wine. There’s 20 Negronis in the box for $60. And I have to say $3 and a Negroni is a pretty sweet deal. It has really great gin in it from Greenhook Ginsmiths. It’s awesome, more people should be buying this. I know you can get it at Astor so if you live around the country and you want to go to Astor Wines, I know you can buy it there, and I think they shipped to 40 states around the country. But this thing is just awesome to have in the fridge. At the end of the day, if I don’t feel like making a cocktail, I can easily just open the fridge, put an ice cube in my rocks glass, if I want to add some citrus I will — I usually do, and you just have a great, well-made Negroni. Naomi loves it too. I think they’re claiming that it will last for a year. It’s definitely not going to last for a year in my fridge because I’m going to finish it. But that it could last for a year I think is awesome, and I can’t believe that they’re the only people that have done this. More people should be doing it, I think it’s so cool to have a box of cocktails in my fridge. So that’s what I’m drinking.

Z: And it gives you that really beautiful ease of service, you just pour it.

A: Yeah. It’s awesome. I’m not dirtying my mixology equipment, I’m not worried now about if I have enough Campari still on my bar — or some other bitter liqueur, or how fresh is my vermouth, I’m not worried about any of that stuff at this point. And now it allows me to play with other cocktails. I felt like a lot of times I would just default to a Negroni at home when I was making cocktails, and now I figure I’ll default to other things and just have this in the fridge at all times. It’s awesome.

Z: Frankly, I want more things in my life in a bag or in a box. I used to be like a lot of wine people, turn my nose up at the idea, but the more I’ve been around it, it’s such a great solution for a lot of things. It’s easy, it lasts, the space it takes up is very small, which is great. Bottles on a bar can be clunky, and not that the bottles for a Negroni are usually that difficult to fit in there, but I want more things in a bag and box please.

A: It’s funny, when I went away for Naomi’s parents’ 40th anniversary two weekends ago, we brought up a box of white wine from Sokol Blosser, the producer in Oregon who makes, I think, pretty solid Pinot for the price and pretty solid Chardonnay. And they just had a white blend. And I put it in the box and it was the perfect thing for the weekend because people didn’t have to ask me — you guys are probably in the same situation when you’re with family or friends, I’ll always get, “What should we open next? Can you open something? I’m not sure what’s open. There’s all this stuff on the counter.” And now there’s white wine in the fridge. It’s three o’clock in the afternoon, if you wanted to have a white wine and go sit down by the lake or go have a white wine, and people loved it. And I think you’re right, Zach, there’s a convenience thing there. And I think more people should do it and get creative with it. That’s why I love this cocktail thing. This is just so stupidly obvious yet also so creative.

E: And I think that’s why we’re seeing the huge explosion of RTD cocktails right now. I just received a whole shipment last night of cans that are Crafthouse Cocktails from Charles Joly. They’ve made 10 different craft cocktails that are in these little aluminum bottles, and I can’t wait to try them. Tim, one of our staff writers, and I we’re just talking about how we need to do a huge roundup and tasting of all of these RTDs — we should probably do it on the podcast, too — and take people through what are the biggest ones, what are the best ones you can buy, and where can you buy them online.

A: For those of us who are ignorant, who’s Charles Joly?

E: He has won all sorts of top bartender of the year awards for every award. He has won all the awards for best bartender. He was out of Chicago, I’m not sure where he’s located right now, but fantastic talent. I’m super excited to try the mixtures that they have put into the bottle, how they’ve done the citrus stabilization. I can’t wait to dive into those.

A: That’s awesome.

Z: Erica, maybe you need your own Manhattan in a bag or box; that way it’s even easier to make yourself a Manhattan.

E: Yeah, I’m going to have to get myself one of those little cute barrels and a little barrel aged one on the counter.

A: So guys, today’s topic is the thing we’ve all been waiting to talk about: TikTok and alcohol. So before we jump too much into this topic, I want to be very clear to anyone listening who’s in the business, there is no way right now in TikTok to guarantee that if you are on there making drinks you are able to age-verify whether you are talking to people over 21 or not. So please bear that in mind with everything we’re discussing. If you’re a brand thinking about getting on TikTok, and spending money, and you are worried about being compliant, again, nothing that we’re discussing right now should be taken as advice because there is no way, again, just like with the Snap platform at this moment, that you can truly guarantee whether or not the people that you’re posting your videos to are 21. With that being said, I think TikTok is one of the most exciting platforms right now for what is happening in the alcohol space. I think there is a ton of creativity happening on the platform. I’m going to say it is mostly in spirits. I’m not seeing it as much in wine and beer, but TikTok is amazing. I also lost my entire life on TikTok recently. I think I turned it on at seven in the evening and all of a sudden Naomi came out to the couch and it was 3 a.m., and she said, “Are you coming to bed?” I said, “What? Oh my God, I’ve just been on TikTok.” That’s because the algorithm is so good. And I’m talking so good. I’ve never seen another tech platform that had an algorithm that learned this quickly and is this smart about the things you like. I can go down crazy rabbit holes where I’m learning how to bake bread by a ton of people, and now I’m obviously in drinks TikTok. That’s why I’m curious what you guys’ experiences are. I told you guys a few weeks ago I wanted to do a TikTok podcast and both of you said, “OK, fine. We’ll freaking download it.” So before I talk about everything TikTok and sort of give the whole history of TikTok, I’d love to hear, what are your impressions of it now? You both have been on the platform. What do you think?

E: From my perspective, I know why the algorithm is so good. It’s because they’re using AI. And so they are able to tag all of the objects in a video and then that helps them serve up content similar to the things that you were looking at in the prior videos or in the videos that you’ve watched the most. And I do think that the algorithm is amazing. I went down the rabbit hole of looking at flair bartending, and then it was actually hard to move away from that. Flair bartending is having more than a moment, it is dominant on that platform and booming. And a lot of the videos that are being posted are from Russia, from throughout Europe, from Asia, most of the cocktails that you’re seeing are in metric measurements, they’re not in the States. And the amount of creativity, I agree, is pretty fascinating. There’s just a lot happening there, but there’s also a lot of junk to get through. I looked pretty hard for wine, it’s really hard to find wine content, and I did not find very much that I found super compelling. So it definitely seems to be a place for cocktails and flair bartending. But I’m curious to hear what you guys have found.

A: Zach?

Z: So I think it’s really interesting that you guys both really talked about how effective the algorithm was because my impression has been that it’s actually the effectiveness of the algorithm that, to this point, kind of exposes to me the limitations of the platform. And by that I mean that when you have such a tight correlation between what you’ve previously watched and what you are going to be served up in the future, I think it creates a real homogeneity. And that’s the thing that I was surprised by, and I think it’s born out not just in the drink space but with this TikTok challenge, so much of the platform seems to be around recreating someone else’s popular video and doing it yourself. And I can certainly understand how for a lot of the user base, which let’s be honest skews a lot younger than us, typically. That’s a hugely important thing. We all went through a phase in our teens or 20s where we wanted to be just like someone else, we wanted to copy their style, their mannerisms, their vocabulary — whether that was someone we knew, or someone on TV.

A: I think you’re taking the really old man position right now. And I’m going to say that everything you’re saying is completely incorrect, but I will correct it after you make your point. But yes, I think you’re definitely taking the crotchety old man position right now.

Z: But here’s the thing, I think there’s a fundamental challenge, and it’s a challenge that the drinks industry faced, in some ways, with Instagram as well. Although I think there’s a little bit of a difference there, and it’s that a lot of the things that I think people typically find appealing about alcohol are pretty difficult to translate to that medium. And we’ve seen that, that’s been an issue with wine and beer, and to a lesser extent, cocktails. There’s more of a visual aspect to those, it’s hard to translate those into compelling visual content. One of the reasons, Erica, I think you don’t see a lot of great wine content is, what exactly does a great 15 second wine video look like? I know at VinePair we’ve certainly tried to produce that, and I think some of the stuff we’ve done has been really good. But it is very hard to make a compelling piece of video and audio content about something that is deeply experiential. And so I think that’s why you see flair bartending so big because it looks cool. It’s fun to watch people do that. I certainly watched plenty of videos of people making crazy a** concoctions but I also, and again, crotchety old man or not, I also looked at a lot of those things and thought I would never, ever, ever want to drink that. I left those drinks behind 15 years ago. And so if you’re 21 and 22 and especially if you’re in a place where you can go out to bars safer than another part of the world or whatever, f*** it, have fun with it. Enjoy these crazy a** drop shots that people are coming up with where the drink changes color. But I don’t know, that’s not compelling content to me, personally. I’m still kind of at a loss to figure out how that translates into a platform that I’m going to rely on regularly.

A: I’m not seeing much flair bartending, so that’s interesting that the two of you are. And that’s what I think is actually interesting about TikTok. So, TikTok isn’t just about copying. There’s a little bit of that in the pure form of it, but it’s a lot about having fun and being creative and being your own person. What I think is very interesting about TikTok is some of the largest influencers on the platform I’ve never seen before. I don’t know if when you guys were watching you ever saw the Sway Boys, or you saw Hype House, saw some of these massive celebrities that have tens of millions of followers, I certainly haven’t. The only exposure I’ve ever had is reading Taylor Lorenz, the very well known New York Times style report. I saw a little bit of flair bartending in the beginning but now I’m seeing a lot of very serious mixology. And I’m seeing a lot of those personalities. And I think what’s interesting about it is it really is allowing those that are more entertaining, those that are providing a service for people are getting more views. But what’s cool about TikTok is it’s not just about who you follow, unlike Instagram. So it’s not about creating this profile where you’re pushing people over and over “Follow me, follow me, follow me, follow me. I’ll follow you. You follow me,” that kind of thing. That’s not how TikTok works. TikTok just rewards good content. And I think that that’s what makes the platform so exciting to so many people, and I think it is really exciting, especially for the spirit space. If you are a bartender who is engaging, and that is really great at making drinks, and that can tell a story while you make those drinks, and can show you a beautiful cocktail at the end, it doesn’t matter if you are a bartender who owns a really well known bar in Manhattan or you’re a bartender that is making drinks somewhere else in the middle of the country and you’re not the bar owner but you just know how to make a great cocktail, you can have a platform on TikTok and really build a name for yourself. And I think in that regard, the platform is very exciting and very different from anything else that’s existed before it. I mean, look, you saw Vine tried to create this and they weren’t able to because the algorithm was s***. Instagram has tried to mimic it, they can’t. So it says a lot about what the technology is. Also why China is never going to allow it to be sold to the United States, because the algorithm is so valuable. But it’s really actually, I think, a very fascinating place to learn how to make drinks, if you can find those right people. And then yes, you could start following them. But what I think is cool is that there are little niches in everything. You are both right, there doesn’t really seem to be any wine TikTok. But I think that’s because it’s very hard to make engaging wine content. In general, like you said, Zach, it’s very difficult. The stuff I’ve seen on Instagram is pretty bad. I think we do a very good job with Keith’s 15 second wine reviews. We’ve brought them over to TikTok, some of them are doing well, some of them not as much. Our explainer videos are doing incredibly well, people looking for knowledge on what to do and how to understand the platform. But wine content as a whole on social media is pretty difficult. If you post a bottle shot on Instagram, I don’t know necessarily that that moves mountains for that winery and will cause that winery to sell out. Same with beer Instagram, I’m not really sure. But cocktails, there’s a real opportunity to make those cocktails and also be entertaining at the same time, and that is why I do think flair bartending has taken off in these certain circles, but why there’s a lot of other kinds of bartending that are also finding a moment, as well as just people who are being silly. People who are just saying, “Oh, here’s how I’m mixing my Truly today.” But I think that alcohol does have this really interesting space there and people are being playful with it. And I like it because it embodies what we’ve always said at VinePair that there’s all these ways to experience drinks and there’s all these different ways to learn about drinks and people are being really open and honest with the drinks they like and are showing. It’s a great place to understand what people are interested in right now, regardless of age, I think.

E: From my perspective, I think what is interesting about TikTok right now is that if you do have really good content, you can rack up a ton of views. You can have far more reach on that platform than you can on many others, if the content resonates, and there’s a variety of ways to do that. But I think that brands, if they are looking to get into the space, there’s a couple things to consider. First, as the platform develops here in the States, I do think that they probably will allow some sort of age gating. And I think that day is probably coming soon. So the Chinese version, Douyin, has links in the videos to purchase products and to tip creators like they do on the Twitch platform. And that functionality is expected to come out on the U.S. version sometime soon. So when the monetization becomes a reality on TikTok, which could be six months, who knows, then I think they’re going to see that that’s the way to make money for the platform as well, and start age gating so that we can have more regulated products that are able to be shown to viewers who are the right age. But in the meantime, I’d say for brands that are looking to get into the platform and start to build an audience, I’d say any of that portrait view, Instagram stories — repurpose them, just repost them, reuse that content, and then you’ll start to build an audience. And then, at some point, there’s going to be the tools for brands to monetize. You might as well start now with the type of content that is engaging but definitely doesn’t show young people, any young people imbibing at all. I was reading that TikTok in the past six months removed 49 million videos for content that depicted regulated goods with minors. And, for context, the number of video views per day on the platform is over a billion, so that’s a small percentage, but the ability for brands to use this platform more effectively is going to change and it’s going to change soon.

A: All you have to do is look at Walmart getting a piece, or potentially getting a piece, of this deal and realize that they’re going to start using that algorithm to make sure that, “Oh, all of a sudden Zach’s been looking at a lot of cocktail videos and a lot of those videos also included really nice aged rums, only he lives in a state, let’s say L.A., where we actually can sell alcohol through Walmart. And he has a Walmart account, why don’t we have one of those show up at his house and he can return it if he wants, or if he keeps it and he likes it then we’re going to charge him.” I think there’s a huge opportunity of that coming very fast with how powerful this algorithm is. I think, for me, it’s really interesting because — I’m obviously the TikTok fan here, I’ve spent a lot of time on the platform — of the ways people can create personalities for themselves. There’s this woman I’ve been following, she’s ThirstyLA, and all of her cocktail videos she’s dressed up in sort of ’50s attire, ’50s music in the background, it’s all very atmospheric. And then you have a guy like Thirsty Whale, and he’s in his apartment with a very ridiculous bar, let’s be clear a way more ridiculous bar than you can think of. The only person, I think, who has a bigger bar is probably Aaron Goldfarb. Very heavily stocked, making drinks, and it looks like he’s in a professional bar. And I think people have figured things out and they’re creating their own personas, and I just think it’s awesome.

Z: Here’s my question that I have that comes out of this, which is, I think one thing that you guys have both talked about that really intrigues me is at some point is TikTok more an entertainment platform or a commerce platform? And it isn’t to say that you can’t necessarily be both, but I think about a lot of the examples that you’ve given and I think the person who might watch some guy with an elaborate home bar make really fancy elaborate cocktails, that might be entertaining for you, and for lots of people. It might be entertaining for me, but I don’t know that it’s going to then cause me to go out and spend any money. I might go, “Wow, that guy has a bunch of cool bottles,” but I’m not going to buy some obscure black walnut liqueur just because I saw this guy make a drink with it. I’m going to go, “Huh. Interesting. Cool.” And if I went out to a bar maybe I’d see if they have it and maybe I’d ask them to make it.

A: Zach, you clearly don’t understand influencers because, with all due respect, there’s a ton of people that already are buying what these people are pushing. One of the biggest gins that I’ve seen a lot, and clearly this must be a campaign, I don’t know if you both are familiar with Empress Gin?

Z: Oh yeah, but they’ve been doing this all over platforms.

A: I guarantee you, people are buying it because that’s what these people are using.

Z: That’s a great question. Let’s pull the Nielsen data. I don’t know. You could be right.

A: They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t.

Z: Adam, I read a lot of stories about Instagram influencers who people gave lots of money to and it turned out that they didn’t do s*** for brands.

A: From what I’ve looked at, for the brands that do it a lot, it works or they wouldn’t keep doing it, for brands that actually aren’t just dipping their toe in it. Haus, whose co-founders I interviewed, is a perfect example. They figured out the influencer model and they’re 10x sales right now on platforms. A brand like that who is doing it has figured it out and also knows who to go to. If the influencer has a very loyal following. That’s going to be the issue: How many people are actually following the person? You’re right, I don’t think an influencer that has 3,000 followers is moving something for anyone. But I think certain influencers with very loyal communities absolutely do move products. Look, I’m the first person to pooh-pooh influencers. I’d think, “Oh, why are we paying attention to all these different influencers?” But at the end of the day, a lot of them who are good and who have really engaging content and who are shouting out this one product over and over and over again, especially when it’s not really clear that it’s being paid for, do move products. They just do. And, again, you can argue it all you want for some of the small people, but there would not be a lot of these brands who do it over and over and over again if it didn’t work. These marketing people are paid way too much money to get it wrong.

E: Yeah, I agree with that. I think that if you look at the brands right now that are on Instagram spending a lot of money for influencer marketing, those are the brands that are soon going to be transitioning over to TikTok. Those are the ones that have realized if these campaigns are working for them, and I know a lot of these campaigns do work, that TikTok is going to be the next platform, and they’re probably already experimenting.

A: I think the problem why we don’t have a really clear answer is because a lot of the brands that are big, like the Hendricks of the world or anything owned by, let’s say, the Pernos, the Camparia, the Diageos, they’re not going to take the risk because they are very, very, very, very, very strict about having to make sure that at least 70 percent viewability, 90 percent of any platform — whether it’s Instagram, our site, whatever — is 21-plus. And TikTok can’t guarantee that yet. Whereas a company like Empress Gin, I don’t know who owns them, may not care yet. So you’re going to have some of these smaller craft brands take the risks and they’re going to play much more than someone else would because they’re not as worried. Aviation was the same way. There’s a lot of ads that they got away with because they were a smaller brand, even though they were owned by Ryan Reynolds, to some extent that a Diageo never would have done. Now that Diageos bought them, Ryan will not be allowed to do an ad making fun of Peloton and encouraging you to drink after an exercise. But at the time, they could get away with it because they were smaller, and it’s all self-policing anyways. So that I think it’s going to be really interesting to see. But as a whole, I think the platform is really interesting. I think that people who play with it and figure it out are going to be pretty successful. Again, I don’t know if that’s going to translate to success in other things, but I think you might see some bartenders build profiles, get book deals, whatever off of TikTok, for sure.

Z: I think the one point you made, which I think is the best one, is that a platform, especially a relatively new one, at least to American audiences, always affords opportunities for new people to make a name for themselves. It was true on Instagram. It’s true on Twitch, not so much for our industry but for lots of other ones, and so I agree. You know, if you are able to create a presence, if you’re able to be engaging in the forum TikTok promotes, then yeah, you can have real success and you can have lots of views. And we know that in our culture views translate into influence and influence translates into product moved, according to Adam, and so I think there’s the possibility there. I was a little late to Instagram. I’m cool with that, too, but I look forward to seeing what comes out of it. I think you’re right, there’s some really interesting ways to convey drinks to people and convey drinks culture, and I look forward to my life two years from now.

A: I think what makes the platform so interesting — I realize I’ve talked on a large majority of this podcast — I’ve never made a single TikTok. I just like going on and seeing what’s going on. And there’s different platforms for different people. We talked about this before we jumped on to record: Erica is back on Twitter tweeting a lot more. Zach, you’re on Twitter a lot. I’m not the biggest Twitter fan, and I don’t really go on ever. I don’t even go on to view. Twitter is not my platform. And that was an older platform. I’m into commerce and pushing things, I’ve never seen anything get pushed through Twitter. I’ve seen massive people tweet out stories, and no one clicks. That’s not what Twitter is. Twitter is all about the feed. Earlier on, when I was really interested in building VinePair, we weren’t interested in people just knowing about the article. I’m interested in people actually reading them. And so we were finding much more success on platforms like Pinterest and Facebook, so I was drawn to them. And now really Instagram. What I think is cool about TikTok, in terms of cocktails, too, is I think Instagram has really rewarded a different kind of cocktail maker. It’s someone who’s really good at making cocktails and also photographing them, and TikTok actually rewards, a little bit, the opposite. It rewards someone with a really good personality. There’s a lot of drinkstagramers who I think could never translate to TikTok, and probably vice versa. There’s a lot of people who are becoming really big in the drink space on TikTok that probably don’t take the best photo. Or don’t take as good a photo as some of the other people. And it would take them a very long time to build that same audience, but they are really engaging, and they seem like a really fun person that you’d love to grab a drink with, and they seem super accessible when they make the cocktail and they tell you a story. And so they grow pretty quickly. I think that’s what makes each interesting for different people, and why everyone has to play around with whatever platforms they’re on to figure out what they like.

E: My takeaway from it is there are now social platforms for all personality types. Some of them are more monetizable than others. Brands will wait to see which ones are going to end up being the most monetizable. They’re changing all the time. But then again, you’ve got to watch the Social Dilemma, if you haven’t watched already, and you’re going to delete them all.

Summary: Jaebum meets the woman who started it all and is given an important task.

Jaebum is slowly beginning to think he was going insane. As if his still constant headache wasn’t enough he’s been starting to hallucinate. He catches glimpses of people, in places he’d only dreamed of seeing. Once he even found himself inside of a car driving, faster than must have been legal, through a range of mountains he’d never seen before. He’d look out the window to see rain pattering against the pane only to blink and have the sun shining in his eyes. More than anything he just wanted an answer as to why this was happening to him.

Stress. That’s what the doctors he’s gone to had told him. Too much stress. He needed a vacation. He needed to rest and relax. It was easy for them to say that when they didn’t have a world of responsibilities on their shoulders. The thought of a vacation is a pipe dream, something unattainable and distant. No matter how much he wants it he knows it’ll be a long time before he has a chance to rest.

Jaebum can certainly feel the weight of his troubles when he walks through the front door of his home. His hand rubs the back of his neck, trying to soothe the constant pounding that has taken up residence there. The lights are off but given the time of day, he knows that his younger sisters are in their bedroom doing school work.

It doesn’t take long for his eyes to find the form of his mother. Her permanent place is on the couch, in front of the television. Empty food containers and bottles were strewn about on the carpet form a barrier around her. Jaebum tries his best to keep it clean, but no matter how hard he tries the clutter remains, an ever constant presence that follows her like a shadow.

From a glance, he can tell that she’s asleep, huddled in on herself, under the blanket that he covered her with the night before, one that once upon a time was used for picnics. When he sees it a memory comes to mind unbidden, one of their entire family, together and whole. His father and mother sitting together on a hillside atop the same blanket while he and his sisters are playing further down. It’s enough to bring tears to his eyes but he pushes them back, willing his mind to go blank, throwing up walls to keep the memories back before they have a chance to come rushing forward. It still amazes him how so much changed in a manner of years, but those are thoughts for another time.

Jaebum settles on the edge of the couch, the cushions shifting with his weight. He reaches out brushing the hair back from her face. “Mom,” he whispers, leaning forward slightly to see if she responds.

She groans softly, a scowl contorting her features. It takes her a minute but she finally opens her eyes. They are glazed over, she smiles when they focus on him but a second later she’s doubled over. Jaebum moves practiced quickness and ease and is soon rubbing his mother’s back in soothing circles while she vomits into a waste bin. When she’s finished she falls back onto the couch, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand weakly.

“I’m sorry,” her voice is small, and she looks so fragile but he can’t help the flare of irritation that arises in him. He smothers it, just as he smothered the memory before.

“Don’t apologize. It’s okay.” Do apologize. It’s not okay! He wants to scream it at her, but he doesn’t instead he gives her a wan smile. “You get some more rest okay? I’ll bring you some water.”

He rises from the couch to get a glass of water and by the time he’s come back she’s already asleep. He can’t bring himself to see his sisters, not after what he just went through with their mother. They’d be able to tell what happened and he wants to spare them that. Instead, he heads to his bedroom shutting the door behind him.

His bedroom looks just like it had when he left. Every last surface is clean, not a speck of dust present. This is the only environment around him that he’s able to control. Maintaining that is important to him, in a lot of ways it’s the only thing that’s still keeping him sane. Jaebum slips off his jacket, hanging it on the hook on the back of the door before collapsing onto his bed, shielding his eyes with his arm. Finally, maybe he can get some sleep.

“Jaebum.” The voice comes out of nowhere, so quiet and soft that he’s not even sure he heard it but he moves his arm anyway. Standing right above him is a woman. The very same woman he saw in the garage a month ago.

He sits up quickly heart pounding. “Who are you?”

“Hello Jaebum,” Her gentle smile somehow instantly soothes him. “It’s nice to finally meet you.”

He repeats his question. “Who are you?”

“My name is Jude. I’m your mother.” She says it with such finality that for a moment he believes her.

“Yeah right. My mother is passed out on the couch. You are not my mother.”

She laughs, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “I didn’t mean it in a biological sense. More in the...universal sense.”

“None of this is making any sense.”

She reaches out to touch his arm but he jerks away before she can. For a split second hurt flashes in her eyes but she hides it quickly sighing and shaking her head with a wry smile. “Somehow I knew you were going to be difficult to convince. Where to begin though….”

“How about you start with what you’re doing in my house?”

“I’m not in your house. You’re in mine.” Jaebum blinks and suddenly he’s sitting in a kitchen at a breakfast bar while children run around him. The woman smiles from over a breakfast bar, watching him process. “Are you ready to listen now?’

He nods slowly, completely speechless and when he blinks again they’re back in in his bedroom thousands of miles away from where they were before. “Where were we just now?”

“Oregon, in the states but that’s not important. What is important is that you get in touch with the others as soon as possible.”

“Yes. There are seven of you. You’re all connected through your minds. Think of it’s like a Professor X telepathic kind of thing.”

“So you did something to me? I’m a mutant?”

“Oh no, no. You’re sensate.”

He raises a brow at her. That sounded like a vague way of calling him a mutant. “Right…”

“I’m really bad at explaining things so stick with me. You were born with a genetic enhancement, a little bit like a web and that web connects you with others. Six other people who share this ability with you. You can tap into their memories and their skills and you can be where they are should you so choose. Your mind widens allowing you to let them in. It’s wonderful and scary and exhilarating all at the same time!”

She falls silent waiting for him to have some sort of reaction. “I’m not following.”

“You’ve been seeing stuff lately right? Rain when it’s not there, you’ve been in places you’ve never been before?” He nods slowly in answer. “Those are what the others are experiencing, you slip into their minds at during those moments, catching glimpses of their lives.”

“Why are you telling me all this?”

“Because Jaebum, if you don’t connect with the others and if you don’t help each other then...you’re all going to die.”

Post 22- 7 day countdown, infections, biopsies, PTSD, and CHAD IS OUT

Warning: lots of cursing because I was annoyed with half of what went down this past week so I think you’ll be able to tell which parts hehe

It’s been a while since I’ve posted an actual update that wasn’t written while I was all up in my feels.

The date of my last chemo infusion is August 9th, with me getting fluids for the last time on August 10th. I’ve been counting down the days since I hit 60. Right now it’s 7 days til the 9th. To say I’m ECSTATIC is to say the least. This past Tuesday was my 11th chemotherapy session, so the first part of my 6th cycle. 6 seems like such a small number but when I think about it but then I think how those 6 cycles translated to 6 months of treatment and I’m kind of left in awe at how far I’ve come. It’s both shocking and heartening.

It’s funny because my oncologist had said in the beginning that after the second or third treatment Hodgkin’s Lymphoma patients typically feel better, or that the chemotherapy side effects tend to bottom out instead of getting worse. She, as well as other specialists, had said that the port would be super easy to have, I wouldn’t even notice it and that it’d make getting treatment a lot easier. Seems like I hit the jackpot on experiencing all the unlikely scenarios when it came to my port and to chemo. So let me give you a rundown on life in general and how treatment is going.

I can’t remember whether I mentioned it or not but last month I started an internship at a non-profit immigration legal services organization. I’ve been LOVING IT. The woman I’m interning for is WONDERFUL (Hi T) and is as excited to teach me as I am to learn. It feels really good to be getting out of the house more often and doing something that isn’t just productive but actually meaningful and helping others. Plus, they’re so flexible with my treatment schedule and take into consideration my needs especially considering my health.

I also enrolled at Cascadia for the fall quarter to finish up my AA since I didn’t get to last year. Tuition is a little stressful considering financial aid sucks and I haven’t really been working much but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there. I’m just excited to have some sort of routine and normalcy back in my life. Before my diagnosis I felt burned out and kind of rudderless. Now, as clichéd as it is, I’m feeling more motivated to finish school, to figure out what I want for myself and what I want my life to look like.

Two of my best friends moved to different states. One from California to Colorado, and I’m super excited to see her thrive in her new place since she’s been talking about it non-stop. She drove up from California and I met her in Oregon and we saw her favorite band the Avett Brothers in Bend, Oregon which was amazing. That small town in kind of in the middle of nowhere and on the edge of the Willamette national forest and the stars there are ridiculous. It’s funny we always half-way plan these spontaneous little trips so we didn’t really thinking about where we were gonna spend the night so we ended up sleeping in her car in the national forest at some random campground. The view of the sky was worth the slightly uncomfortable sleeping arrangement. My other best friend moved to New Mexico. I’m also super excited to see her grow where she’s at now.

So last week Tuesday was my 11th chemo session. And it was an eventful one. In the days leading up to my last infusion my port had swelled up and actually blistered. At this point my port acting up isn’t anything new so I didn’t bother to go the clinic about it since I was going to soon anyway. Whatever, I’m a bad patient. Morning of the infusion comes and I tell my nurse that my port looks funny and that it’s hurting a bit more than usual. She peels back the sticky paper stuff (can you tell chemo brain is taking its toll on my vocab?) and wipes off the numbing cream.

“Oh kittens.”

Did I mention how much Chad (my port) sucks?

As endearing as her exclamation was, it was also kind of concerning since she’d never seemed really thrown by how messed up my port looked. Apparently my port was so concerning she went to get one of the other oncologists I was meant to see today (my oncologist was out of town) and see whether they should access it or not. He came in, looked at my port and then proceeded to look just as confused and alarmed as my nurse. He then went outside to talk to another oncologist who came to see my port and they decided to go ahead and access my port (which fucking hurt despite the stupid numbing cream). My nurse accessed my port but it was decided that I needed to go down to Radia Diagnostic Imaging where they put my port in because while they successfully accessed my port they weren’t sure if it was leaking (ew) and that’s what was causing so many issues.

At this point a 15 minute appointment before treatment turned into an hour long one that was making me late for chemo. I went down to RDI where they injected dye into my port and then used an x-ray to see if it was working properly. Which it was. I will say that the whole team in RDI seemed perplexed by Chad too. One of them even said, “In my ten years of doing ports I’ve never seen this.” Thank you for that reassuring comment dude. They deemed Chad well enough to get treatment so they sent me to infusion with instructions to come back once I was done so a specialist could look at it. Infusion was infusion, nothing new except I had an awesome visitor. Hi Shauna! :D

Once infusion was done, I went back down to RDI. The specialist looked at it, again seeming very confused by Chad and said the dreaded B word. Biopsy. I swear I didn’t used to have an issue with needles until I got cancer. THANK YOU BECKY. So they brought me into a different room and had me take off my shirt and lay down under a blanket while they set up their torture tools (Again, I NEVER had issue with needles and getting blood drawn or anything until that first awful biopsy. Shit’s traumatizing.) Luckily at that point my mom got to the hospital and was able to be in the room with me while the biopsy was done. They got me all cleaned up. 1, 2, 3, a “quick pinch, quick pinch,” from the specialist and a huge fucking sting later, I was numb and they were digging out tissue and whatever fluid was in that blister. A few minutes later they had me cleaned up and on my way home, with a reminder that they’d let me know if anything suspect popped up in the culture and a prescription for major antibiotics just in case.

The next day I went back to infusion for fluids. Honestly, I was feeling pretty good. Having one more down just one more infusion to go, in addition to the fact that I hadn’t started to feel awful, I felt like I was sprinting towards the finish line.

Then Thursday came. If I was sprinting towards the finish line, feeling good Tuesday and Wednesday, I ate it hard on Thursday. (Insert appropriate meme here.) I woke up and my body was in total rebellion to the things I was putting it through. I woke up and my teeth hurt, my muscles were cramping, my bones felt like they were on fire and everything hurt. I couldn’t even really name the pain. To top it off, Friday morning I woke up with an awful rash that burned and stung, in addition to Chad being his usual pain in the ass self. I figured I should call the clinic and they had me come in immediately. Usually I’m pretty lowkey at my appointments, I’m not really demanding and I’m pretty patient during mix ups and stuff. But at this point, I’m annoyed that they’ve insisted I keep Chad even though he’s been more trouble than he’s worth, a lot of my issues that have come with treatment have stemmed from Chad, and three NO ONE LISTENS WHEN I SAY I DON’T WANT THE PORT. I’m pissy, I feel terrible and I’m done being an easygoing patient.

So after my RN took my vitals and went to consult with another oncologist, two nurses came in to do blood cultures from BOTH my arms. They had already done 2 blood cultures that both gave negative results to an infection, so I with, some attitude I’ll admit, asked why they were doing another blood culture when they’d recently done two others. One of the nurses had been the same one to do the blood cultures the last two times. And apparently, nurses don’t really get to do them too often so they hit the jackpot with me and she got to teach two other nurses how to do it with me as their guinea pig. Apparently, I was to be the guinea pig again. Right then, I was super frustrated and wanting to cry because one, everything hurts and two, I actually wanted to rip that damn port out myself if they weren’t going to do it. Whatever, the nurse explained to me that this time they were just gonna focus on blood infections on both sides of my body rather than whatever else it was that they were testing last time (I guess the blood cultures last time weren’t to test… for… blood… infections?). They did the blood cultures (I think at this point I can do them myself considering I know the procedure now ha) and my RN came back. She told me to get some type of cream for the rash and that if develop a fever to call back and that they’d let me know about the blood infection. Also, side note, that biopsy they did Tuesday also yielded negative results so no infection. Which is good but WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH MY PORT THEN???? She also tried to give me a bit of a pep talk, saying that they only had to use the port one more time for one more chemo session. To which my response was, hell no. You are taking this thing out of me. The next time someone touches my port it’s to take the damn thing out. So I insisted on her writing up the order so that when my oncologist got back Monday, she could just sign it, send it to RDI and get me scheduled to have Chad taken out that week. So she did and now here we are. The rest of the weekend was physically painful in ways I can’t really describe but still pretty enjoyable. I went to my sister’s best friend’s wedding which was sweet. Although I went sporting that awful rash (that I still have today- Wednesday.) And then Sunday was spent with the family celebrating my uncle’s birthday and yesterday we celebrated my cousin’s birthday too.

But let’s talk about today (8/1). CHAD HAS VACATED MY BODY THANK YOU GOD. But let me also just say that removing him was a terrible process that I was awake for and do not recommend that AT ALL. Seriously. Maybe because my port and the area around it is just generally super tender and painful and that made the process of removing it more painful than usual but whatever- point is the port removal was just as bad and traumatizing- if not more- than my first biopsy. My first biopsy which I start crying about when asked to talk about it.

I guess what doesn’t kill you make you stronger. Or it just gives you really unhealthy coping mechanisms, a morbid sense of humor and some PTSD. I really think the biopsies and the port removal and being awake for those procedures really fucked me up in the head. Someone will ask about those procedures and I kid you not I have to try not to cry or get emotional when I do. Even writing this now I’m tearing up which sucks because again things like needles and surgeries didn’t bother me before. Now I’m THAT patient. The one that although doesn’t flail and make your job harder as the person performing the procedure, they do panic and quietly cry and loudly curse a lot and probably make your job slightly entertaining but at the same time you want to roll your eyes at because you think they’re being dramatic.

Yeah, that’s now me.

First I had to check in at clinic and get my blood drawn by my nurse. After confirming that my white blood cell count was well enough to go on with the procedure I went down to RDI and waited an hour for to be called back. A nurse came to get me and led me to the room where they were gonna perform the procedure, the specialist saw my port and said, “Oh yeah, that needs to come out.” THAT’S WHAT I’VE BEEN TRYING TO TELL YOU FOR 6 MONTHS. So I walked into this procedure thinking it’ll be as easy as when they put the port in. They’d knock me out and I’d wake up sans Chad.

Nope.

They explained the procedure to me and right before I signed the consent forms they mentioned that I’d be awake during this and that they’d be using local anesthetic. Keep in mind, the memory of the last biopsy from last week and the anesthetic is still fresh in my mind, so my first thought was WTF. Rude. I went ahead and signed the forms because I was getting this thing out of me one way or another and I was trying not to panic about that and not be a baby about the whole thing.

They got me all set up on the same x-ray table they had used on me last week. They covered my whole body with this tent-type thing that gives them access to the area but covers the rest of my body. I started to panic a little bit more because it was weird that I wouldn’t be able to see what they’re doing. There were two nurses helping the specialist during this procedure.

The whole experience was not fun. The anesthetic hurt. A lot. I think they injected me a total of 8 times. The last 3 being because when they started cutting me open I felt something sharp rather than the pressure and pulling/tugging you’re supposed to feel when you’ve been numbed for a procedure. So apparently, I didn’t take to well to the anesthetic and honestly I could still feel sharp sensations during the procedure even after the 8 shots of anesthetic. But at that point I figured just suck it up because I didn’t want to get unnecessarily poked if the anesthetic wasn’t gonna work anyway. Either way I was going to feel pain. Pretty sure I was having a panic attack during the whole thing. I just was laying there silently crying out of pain and frustration and just being overwhelmed by everything I’m putting my body through in the name of regaining my health and wellbeing. It was like that first biopsy and feeling overwhelmed and so foreign in my own body all over again. During this procedure they took some skin samples and blood samples to see if they could figure out what kind of infection caused me to have so many issues with Chad.

After that whole ordeal, they stitched and glued me up. Trying to make myself feel better I sarcastically said, “Well that was pleasant.” To which one of the nurses responded saying, “See, it’s not so bad! Most patients end up saying it wasn’t too bad.” To which I thought, BITCH WHERE???

So then they sent me off with another batch of major antibiotics to take for the next five days, three times a day.

So here I am, the next day FREE OF CHAD.

Next week Tuesday I’m going in for another procedure to get a PICC line put it. A PICC line is like a really long IV that stays in your arm and is threaded into one of the major veins there. Since Chad got the boot they need another way for me to receive my last chemo which they’re going to administer using the PICC line. I hear they use local anesthetic to place it too. So we’ll see how that goes. Thanks for keeping up with me everyone, I really appreciate it. 7 MORE DAYS :D

[TH] Burning

The room was bare and cold. The air smelled of old sweet, fear and coffee. The small metal table and the three chairs had seen better times and the overhead lamp, which was the only source of light in the room, barely chased the shadows away.

The young girl was sitting on one side of the table, opposite of the large mirror that nearly covered the complete wall. She had a worn-out look on her otherwise beautiful, alabaster white face and her long fingers were playing unconsciously with the handcuffs, which she had worn not too long ago. The only door opened with a squeak, but she did not even look up.

Two men entered the room. The younger one was wearing the brown uniform of the local Sheriff’s department, the older a clean, black suit. He was carrying in one hand a laptop and in the other, a yet unopened can of coke. Both men approached the desk, pulled back the chairs and sat down. The older placed the coke in front of the Girl. Without looking, she reached for it, opened it and took a long sip. Then she placed it carefully on the desk, raised her head and looked at her captors.

“Thank you”, she said with a pleasant, slightly girlish voice.

“Don’t mention it”, was the rumbling answer of the older. “Can we continue now with the interview?” he asked.

She sighed, looked down on her hands for a moment and collected herself.

“OK”, she said.

The man in the black suit opened his laptop, took the small microphone and placed it in the middle of the table.

“Interview continues at 5:37pm. Present are: the accused Miss Forester, Deputy Sherriff Felix Tallis and FBI Agents Mikel Shoehorn. The accused has waved the right of an attorney and has agreed to a preliminary interview without her legal guardians. Is this correct, Miss Forester?”

“Yes, yes, yes”, the young girl answered impatient. “I am innocent, so why should I need a lawyer and my parents… they would be of no help anyway, even if you could find them.”

“Miss Forester, in our last interview we covered the time that led up to Monday’s events. You have told us, that you and your brother were forced to run away from your abusive parents and that your plan was to seek shelter and help from your aunt who lives in Eugene. You also told your brother convinced you to take a shortcut through Wilmerton forest and that, due to the dawning night, you got lost in the woods. Is that an accurate summary of your statement so far?”

She nodded.

“The accused has confirmed this by nodding”, the FBI agent stated for the records. “Pease continue with what happened next…”

“I don’t like it”, Hank whispered to his younger sister Grace.

“Don’t be such a baby”, she scolded him.

He was tall and had broad shoulders for his 16 years. He looked more like an adult, than like a teen and he was strong. She knew only too well how strong he was and she had made good use of his strength in the past but when it came to decisiveness, then she was the one who took the lead. That has always been the case even when they had been little kids and especially now that they were on their own.

She had been the one to convince him to leave their home. To run away from their mediocre parents who lived their mediocre lives. She had been the one to suggest “to use” her Lolita charm and blooming body to lure older man into her honey-trap only for them to discover just how strong Hank could be.

She remembered the first time they did it. She had caught the eye of a middle age man in a shopping center and it had turned out to be very easy to lure him away. She had played her role with perfection. Projected the right mix of unaware sexuality and innocence.

He had swallowed hook line and sinkers and had followed her without suspecting anything into the dark alley next to the shopping center. Hank had already waited there for them. The Man had no chance - he never saw it coming - but Hank had been too eager, too nervous and hit him a tiny bit too hard. She was sure that he was still alive when she left him lying in the mud and rubbish in the old, dark alley. Robbed of everything slightly valuable he had on him. She was sure he was still alive then, but to be honest, she did not really care. All she cared for was the feeling she had when she saw that creep lying at her feet in the dirt, where he belonged. That feeling of superiority, of power – like she had never felt in her life before and she loved it.

Since that first time, they had done it repeatedly. Sometimes with, sometimes without success but always able to at least get away. But here in the rural area of Oregon, their luck has run out. The small communities were to close. Everyone knew everyone else and so it turned out impossible to spot any new marks for their scheme. And so they ended up here, in this forest, at this night, looking at the lonely mansion in the middle of the clearing with hungry eyes.

“I still don’t like it”, Hank repeated. “What if someone is at home? We should walk to the next city and do our usual thing there… or stop a car and take their stuff.”

“No”, her voice sounded decisive. “Look at it”, she continued. “The owners must be rich. I bet they have all sort of things that we can take and sell in the next city. Good money. And I am sure they have food and warm cloth. Don’t you want that?”

His eyes started to gleam at the thought of warm cloth and good food, while he starred at the mansion. Totally missing the little satisfied smile on his sister’s face. She knew how to handle him.

“And I am sure no one is at home”, she said using her best enticing voice.

“Hmm?” he asked. “Why do you think that?”

“Look at it, Dummy. It is getting dark, but no lights have been lit. So either the owner is a night owl or a Bat of some kind, or no one is home. What do you think is more likely?”

“So, Miss Forester, in essence you are telling us that you and your brother lost your way in the woods, stumbled by good luck on the mansion of Mrs. Bianchi and decided to ask for help?”, the agent asked

“Yes that is correct”, the girl answered, looked directly in his eyes and smiled her best innocent smile. “We only wanted to ask for some directions and maybe some food or shelter, nothing more.”

“So what happened next?”

“The old lady…”

“Mrs. Bianchi, the owner of the house and the Chocolate-Witch company”, provided the agent.

“Yes, thank you…Mrs. Bianchi opened the door and after listening to our story invited us in. She was such a nice Lady.” Grace looked as if lost in memory for a moment, before she continued: “She gave us some food and a place to sleep. The next morning we woke up but she was not around. We did not want to disturb her and decided to move on. I first heard what had happened from the officer how arrested us today. I was shocked, I tell you. She was such a nice person. Who could do something like this to her?”

The tears were rolling down her perfect cheeks now and she reached for the hankie the deputy handed her thanking him with a quick sweet smile and taking notice of the slight coloration of his cheeks.

“Where is your money hidden, you old witch”, Grace snarled at the old woman before her who was tied to a large kitchen chair. The eyes red from unshed tears and her face covered with bruises from her brothers merciless hits.

“I have no more money”, she whispered without any hope in her voice. “Please, please believe me. I gave you everything I have in the house. Everything else is on my Bank account.”

Grace looked her in the Face, and then nodded to her brother.

He hit her again, this time so hard, that she went flying with the chair to the ground hitting it hard. Hank reached down and pulled her and the chair effortless upright again. She was unconscious. Blood running from her nose.

“Fuck it” Grace cursed.

“Maybe she is telling the truth?” Hand suggested quietly, looking at the beaten woman in front of him.

He did not like it. He had told Grace that he did not like it but she had insisted and finally convinced him to break into this lonely mansion. And the chance of finding something valuable, maybe some good food and not having to spend another night in the dark and wet forest had won him over.

At the start, everything went well … even perfect. No alarm system of any kind, hell even the main door was unlocked. The house was quiet and dark when they entered it. For a moment, they stood silently in the dark entrance hall, listening to the noises of the house. Nothing … oh of course there were some sounds: the squeaking sound of old wood compressing in the cold, the wind howling around the corners of the building and the light sound of their own breathing but nothing else. It seemed they were alone.

Carefully they explored the ground floor. The furniture was exquisite and obviously very expensive. Real paintings covered the walls. The old books in the living room were bound in real leather and the glasses in the drinks cabinet were made out of real crystal.

And then they found the well-stocked kitchen and suddenly all carefulness went out of the window. It looked like a child’s wonderland: Chocolate, cookies, cakes, pastries everywhere. Hanks eyes went wide – he was a real sweet tooth and he knew it. He grabbed a chocolate chip cookie and took a bite – it tasted heavenly.

Grace resisted a moment longer and then reached for a slice of Chocolate and Maple Syrup Cheesecake. She was also the one who spotted the whine cabinet and grabbed a bottle. The etiquette said that it was a “1961 Haut-Brion” from a country called “France” but she did neither care nor knew anything about France other than it was a country in Europe.

She looked for a bottle opener but could not find one, so she smashed the bottleneck against the large wooden kitchen island. She poured some wine into a cup that was standing around and took a big gulp only to directly spit it out on the floor. The wine was extremely dry.

“What a shitty stuff”, she complained to her brother. “I cannot understand why people drink this”, and with this words she threw the bottle into the sink where it shattered with a laud clank.

“What the hell is going on here?” an angry female voice demanded to know from the door. “Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my home?”

Grace whirled around and faced an old, grey-haired woman dressed in a black, expensive looking cocktail dress. It seemed the owner of the house had come home.

“I will call the police…” she said now and reached for her purse.

Hank, who has stood slightly behind her and whom she had not spotted so far due to the open kitchen door blocking her direct view, sprang into action when he heard her words. Smashing his huge fists into her neck from behind and so knocking her out with one blow. She did not even groan or screamed while she fell to the ground where she lay unconscious.

Panic was the first thing Grace felt and she could see the same feeling in the wide open eyes of her brother.

“Let’s get out of here”, he nearly screamed.

By pure force of will, she pulled herself together and pushed the panic away.

“No”, she said with an ice-cold voice. “We cannot go. Not now. She has seen us and she will tell the police.”

“But… but what shall we do” her brother asked anxiously.

“Pick her up and put her on this chair,” she instructed him, and while he did as she commanded, she ripped of the strings from the curtains.

“Bind her” she told him and handed him the strings.

Again, he followed her command and while doing so asked without looking: “What is your plan?”

“We need to get far away from here,” she explained “and to do so, we need money. So we will force her to tell us where she has hidden all her money.”

“So, Miss Forester, you said…”

A loud knock at the door interrupted him. For a moment, the old agent did look a bit annoyed by the interruption but then got up and opened the door. On the other side, another person in uniform was standing and the two whispered for a moment. Then he turned around to Grace and said: “I am back in a minute,” and left the room.

For a few seconds she sat there motionless on her chair. Then she looked at the deputy estimating her chances.

“It is very hot here”, she told him while at the same time opening the uppermost bottom of her deep purple dress. She had bought it on purpose one size too small and now she took a deep breath in, so that the velvet cloth stretched dangerously over her growing bosom. “Very hot”, she nearly whispered seductively and reached for another button. “Can I maybe get another cold coke?” she asked the deputy looking direct into his eyes.

She could see how hard it was for him to concentrate on her face. His gaze tend to wander off… wander to the neckline of her dress. To her hands who opened up yet another button, revealing just a little bit more of her alabaster skin and of her beautiful, white bosom.

She smiled. The deputy might be still fighting but she had seen this in too many men already. She knew that she could seduce him in an instant.

The door opened again and the old FBI agent entered the room, carrying in his hand some files. He looked at her, then at the deputy and raised an eyebrow. Instantly his face turned to a deep red. The agent shook his head and sat down at the table again.

“Sorry for the interruption, Miss Forester, but my colleague has just finished interviewing your brother,” he said without mentioning the incident he clearly was aware off.

“And,” Grace asked?

“It might be interesting for you to know that he told us exactly the same story you did,” the agent stated while looking at the papers in one of the files.

“Of course he did,” Grace said, “what did you expect. We are innocent and telling you the truth!”

“You did not understand me correctly, Miss Forester. You see he used nearly exactly the same words, the same phrases, the same description you did… and that is something that in my long experience never happens”

For a while, Grace roamed restless across the room, every occasionally looking at the unconscious woman in the chair. Suddenly she stopped and turned to her brother: “Come,” she said, “we need to find something. Let’s check the rest of the house while the old bitch is out.”

The checked the ground floor again but without success. A set of silver cutlery was all they could find. It was frustrating to see all the expensive high quality furniture, the paintings that –she was sure of it – were worth a fortune and the other valuable objects behind. But she was cleaver enough to know that she would never been able to sell them, less carry them and so they keep on looking.

The first major hit came in the form of a jewelry box in the master bedroom. It was full of golden rings, necklaces and bracelets. They grabbed one of the pillowcases from the bed and filled it with the treasure.

Then Hank pulled out one of the big books from one of the bookshelf’s and groaned, surprised by its weight. When he opened it, his eyes went wide. It was full of gold coins. Jackpot!

They kept on looking for a while longer but could not find anything else, so they returned to the kitchen… and there they discovered it: The old Lady was dead! She must have chocked on her own blood while they were away.

“Fuck – Fuck –Fuck – Fuck – FUCK!” she screamed loud, while Hank sat down on one of the chairs and looked hopelessly at the dead woman in front of him.

“They will catch us,” he said with a sobering voice. “They will catch us, put us in prison or… do they have the death penalty here?” He asked his sister eyes wide open.

“Stop it!” she screamed at him and stomped angrily with her food on the ground – for a moment resembling a little girl with a temper tantrum that she actually was supposed to be.

Hank buried his face in his hands and cried silently. She looked at him with repugnance. Then started walking around in the room like a caged tiger. Every now and then picking something up just to throw it at the nearest wall.

What to do? How to get out of this? She had no idea. That was not what she had wanted and this idiot brother of hers was of no help … no help at all. She wanted to burn all bridges behind her… burn…

Her eyes went to the old big stove at the other side of the kitchen. She had seen one just like this before… some years ago while watching a movie about a family from Italy. They had used it to make their own Pizza.

She rushed over, opened the huge cast-iron doors, and looked inside. Assessing the space in the stove and looking at the dead woman. It would not fit … at least not in one piece.

Another knock interrupted the interview.

Again the agent stood up and went to the door but this time he did not even try to prevent her from hearing what was said: “Did you transfer it to my Laptop?” he asked the other person.

“Yes, Sir”

“Good, thank you,” the agent answered and then closed the door.

He sat down in front of her and for a moment worked concentrated on his computer.

“You know, Miss Forester there is something you might not be aware off,” he said in a nearly casual manner.

“Really,” she answered: “and what might that be?”

“Mrs. Bianchi was not only the owner of her own chocolate manufacture. She was also a sort of celebrity. She had her own YouTube channel, producing well-liked videos on how to make chocolate and pastries. For this, she had her kitchen outfitted with some high-resolution cameras. Would you like to watch one of them?”

She did not react. Did not answer. Instead, she tried hard to show no reaction, but it was obvious that she was not prepared for this.

“Hmm so silent,” the agent said. Then he turned around the Laptop and she could see a still picture of the kitchen in the old house. He pressed a button and the video started…

Deputy Felix Tallis took another sip from the water cup. Rinsed his mouth to get rid of the taste of vomit and spat it into a nearby trashcan.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself”, Agent Shoehorn told him. “It is always hard to see something this cruel being done by someone so young.”

Deputy Felix Tallis nodded: “I still can’t believe it. She looks like my little sister but… what I saw in this video…. How they tortured the old Lady. And then how she cut her into pieces…”

He swallowed hard again, trying to suppress the urge to vomit again.

“Yes”, the agent said with a hard tone in his voice: “Beneath a pretty face sometimes lurks an evil mind.”

Oregon Cannabis: 2019 Legislative Forecast and Report

The Oregon legislature has been grappling with cannabis for five consecutive years. Talking with those in Salem trenches, one senses some fatigue. At this point, over a month into the 2019 session, a preponderance of legislators appear vaguely inclined to “let it ride” and drop the big ideas when it comes to cannabis. This means we are unlikely to see a full-scale merger of the medical and recreational cannabis programs in 2019 (too bad), and that most of the legislation will be maintenance oriented and reactive.

How did we get here? When Oregon representatives first met in 2015 to codify Measure 91, there was tremendous buzz. The Joint Committee on Marijuana Regulation was convened, and for three consecutive sessions (two long ones and a shorty) Oregon passed bill after bill (after bill) to stage and shepherd its cannabis programs. Following the 2017 session, however, the Joint Committee was dissolved, on the inclination that Salem would start treating cannabis more like a standard policy issue. The 2018 short session therefore saw comparatively limited action, consisting principally of a non-emergency gut-and-stuff marijuana bill, and an omnibus hemp bill to build out that program.

Today, we are aware of just two marijuana lobbyists in Salem, down from 25 or so in 2015, and a dozen or more just two years ago. Some of the trade groups have gone quiet or faded away entirely. Fortunately, legislators like Floyd Prozanski, Ken Helm and Julie Fahey remain with their extensive experience on cannabis policy, and Governor Kate Brown is still here to sign all the bills (she has never vetoed a cannabis bill). All in all, though, there is less energy and probably less expertise for this stuff than before.

Still, industry watchers should still expect a few noteworthy developments in the coming months, after committee work is done. Some of these laws will arise out of necessity, such as to accommodate the 2018 Farm Bill. Some may be out of near necessity, such as addressing oversupply in the OLCC system. And anything else would be either housekeeping or progressive new laws, like social consumption framework, or protecting employees for off-work consumption.

Today, there are 22 or so early-session bills on any number of cannabis issues, kicking around committee. It’s probably not worth getting too granular or even excited about the bills before crossover day, which is the date at which bills die if they haven’t moved out of their respective committees of origin to the floor (or to another procedural or joint committee). Legislation that crosses over and passes into law will likely look different—perhaps drastically so—than currently drafted. Crossover day happens in a couple of weeks.

Given the foregoing, this blog post is not going to examine the draft bills in detail (if you’re interested in doing that yourself, they are available here). Instead, I’m going to outline a few topics getting some discussion, and a few others with a shot at clearing committee and becoming actual laws.

Hemp. There’s almost nothing filed on hemp right now. The sole, skinny bill is HB 2740, a placeholder establishing an Oregon Industrial Hemp Commission and not much more. Rest assured, though: there will be more. Oregon must shape its hemp program for certification to the federal Department of Agriculture as per the 2018 Farm Bill, which will take some preparation by the legislature to ensure that Congressional guidelines for hemp economy states are met. Drafting is happening as we speak, and we expect a fuller hemp bill to pass this session.

Limits on Marijuana Production. There is too much marijuana in Oregon, inside and outside of the state-sanctioned systems. This was the finding of the Oregon State Police Report, the HIDTA Report, the recent Secretary of State Audit, the recent OLCC Report to the Legislature and probably anyone who has spent a little time on the back roads of Jackson or Josephine County.

In a recent blog post, I mentioned that Governor Brown recently weighed in on this vexing issue, requesting a pre-session filing of Senate Bill 218, which would allow the OLCC to refuse to issue marijuana production licenses “based on market demand and other relevant factors.” This would give legislative backing to the slow-walk OLCC already has commenced on license curtailment. Will the Governor’s skeletal proposal stick as written? It seems unlikely. The big consideration here is how (and not “if”) the legislature will protect those who have already invested resources into an application. OLCC may also push back on the Governor’s approach, and request that the legislature take care of any moratorium itself, rather than delegate this problematic task. All in all, though, the smart money says a cap on production is coming. The theory is that processors, wholesalers and retailers are already self-sorting in the free market, but production needs guardrails. Cut off the head of the snake.

Interstate Compact and Sales. This relates to oversupply, and kudos to Adam Smith and the Craft Cannabis Alliance for pushing the exchange idea so hard for so long. But are we going to see licensed marijuana export anytime soon? Probably not. The legislature could start down the path, though, by adopting suggestions and language from this issue’s work group, which seems to have traction. If we get legislation, it will likely be a gut and stuff of Prozanski’s pre-session filed SB 582. There are two big questions here. The first is the scope of whom is allowed to export and import, with possible consensus consolidating around “almost everyone”– licensed producers, processors, wholesalers and retailers. Another big question is: what will the “trigger” look like, allowing these sales to commence. For example, will sales be allowed if and when Congress re- or deschedules? Or when we get another federal tolerance memo? Technically, Governor Brown could enter into an interstate compact at any time, but if sales commenced before the federal door opened significantly, Billy Williams has pledged to shut it down. This means that any bill we get on export will be to tee things up and nothing more.

Social Consumption. Every year, we see social consumption bills. Every year they fail. Typically, these bills are overbroad in that they seek to legalize cannabis cafes and indoor smoking lounges, which would require an exemption to the Oregon Clean Indoor Air Act (that law is slowly phasing out a few grandfathered cigar bars and smoke shops). Do Oregonians want to return to the days where employees and others sit in rooms filled with haze and smoke? Although there are compelling arguments to be made in support of populations who live in Section 8 housing, tourists, etc. (some of which were made in yesterday morning’s hearing), we don’t see it happening. This means the two bills on tap, SB 639 and HB 2233, probably need excision of the lounge licensing concept if they are to advance. Permits for temporary (outdoor) events, on the other hand, might have legs as long as alcohol isn’t present. The public tours for cannabis businesses contained in both bills could definitely work. All in all, chances are probably 50-50 that some version of one of these bills passes.

Local Grow Tax. You can find this concept enshrined in HB 2382, which would allow for county taxation on both recreational and medical production, based on canopy size. This bill is a natural extension of the Southern Oregon Marijuana Initiative, a logic model produced by the estimable Rob Bovett at the Association of Oregon Counties. It is probably dead as written: industry will step on this hard. This means that additional tax revenues to counties would need need to come through reallocation, which means that the Joint Committee on Ways and Means must be convinced to move $30 million or so from the General Fund to various localities. Not happening.

Off-Work Use. This should have happened already. Let’s hope Oregon gets it right in 2019, so that cannabis consumers are treated like alcohol consumers, and patients have access to medicine without fear of job loss. The hope is that HB 2655 crosses over and the legislature looks at reasonable carve-outs for safety and employers reliant on federal grants. It needs to get done.

Technically, Governor Brown could enter into an interstate compact at any time, but if sales commence before the federal door opens significantly, Billy Williams has pledged to shut it down. Still, industry watchers should still expect a few noteworthy developments in the coming months, after committee work is done. Some of these laws will arise out of necessity (such as to accommodate the 2018 Farm Bill). Some may be out of near necessity (such as addressing oversupply in the OLCC system). And anything else would be either housekeeping or progressive new laws, like a social consumption framework, or protecting employees for off-work consumption.

Today, there is are 22 or so early-session bills on any number of cannabis issues, kicking around committee. It’s probably not worth getting too granular or even excited about the bills before crossover day, which is the date at which bills die if they haven’t moved out of their respective committees of origin to the floor (or to another procedural or joint committee). Legislation that crosses over and passes into law will likely look different—perhaps drastically so—than currently drafted. Crossover day happens in a couple of weeks.

Don’t Lose Your Home. Fight Eviction With These 4 Strategies

A few months before the housing market began to implode, 22-year-old Alisa Daly and her boyfriend — now husband — were expecting their first child.

Working at a small trucking company in Arizona, she was close friends with the office manager, and her mother worked for the same firm. So Daly was shocked when her mom called and told Daly she was about to be laid off. Then, a few months after that, the couple’s car broke down and her boyfriend was fired when he didn’t show up for work.

“It made us feel miserable, overwhelmed, depressed and angry,” Daly says. “We couldn't get a job anywhere, doing anything. And no one would hire someone that was pregnant.”

As a renter in 2007, she was able to avoid eviction, unlike the 958,000 tenants who were evicted during the housing crisis. But she was on the precipice of a life-changing, community-altering tragedy, according to recent data compiled by the Eviction Lab, a project spearheaded by Princeton University professor Matthew Desmond with millions of dollars in support from the Gates, JPB and Ford Foundations and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Luckily, Daly, now a homeowner, negotiated a week-to-week payment plan to avoid falling behind in rent — demonstrating what experts say is your best bet if you’re facing eviction. She said dividing the rent into weekly amounts made it easier to budget for.

But when she moved to break her lease after an attempted burglary at her apartment, she also avoided any additional fees by hiring a lawyer and arguing that the landlord had violated the lease by not maintaining the apartment adequately — another option to fight an eviction proceeding.

Even as foreclosures have fallen 67% since the Great Recession, rental evictions declined only 9.6% to 898,479 in 2016, the latest year that statistics are available. And with experts growing concerned about housing affordability, particularly for renters, and wages remaining mostly stagnant, the eviction epidemic is likely to continue.

“If you live in a community that is plagued by eviction, then it is absolutely an epidemic, but it’s an epidemic that’s always been occurring,” said David Dworkin, president and CEO of the National Housing Conference and former housing policy adviser at the U.S. Treasury Department. “And if you don’t live in one of those communities, it’s an epidemic that’s been easy to ignore.”

Here’s Some General Advice on How to Stop an Eviction

Since the Eviction Lab had difficulty compiling all eviction records from some states, including New York and California, the real numbers of people evicted are likely in the millions each year. It could be your neighbor. A family member. It might even be you.

As Alisa Daly’s story shows, you could end up facing eviction through no fault of your own.

Maricopa County, Arizona, Judge Pro Tem Jeremy Rovinsky can see 100 eviction proceedings during a busy day as he does temporary time behind the bench in civil court.

“It’s very difficult for me I have to look people in the eye, people who are struggling, people who are suffering, and tell them they have to leave their home,” he says. “The worst part of my job is having go look them in the eye and say this is the law.”

So how does an eviction work?

First, it’s illegal for landlords to try to evict you by themselves by changing the locks, turning off utilities or through any other method. They must go through the court system.

In most cases, you’ll be served with a notice to vacate, after which you will go before a judge. Be aware that it’s rare for a tenant to win an eviction case for nonpayment. If the judge rules in favor of the landlord, a law enforcement officer will show up and you’ll be forced out of your home.

Although specific eviction laws vary state-by-state, there are some general things you can do if you are facing eviction due to nonpayment of rent. Below, you can see the specific time frames landlords must follow during eviction proceedings, depending on your state.

Negotiate Any Way You Can With Your Landlord or Leasing Company

Usually, it’s in your landlord’s best interest to work out a payment plan so you don’t fall too far behind on rent. For Daly, that meant a week-to-week plan, but it could even be a grace period until you get back on your feet.

But be certain you get whatever agreement you come to in writing.

“[The landlord] neither wants the headache of going to court [n]or that apartment empty,” Rovinsky says.

Documents, Documents, Documents

Depending on your state, or county, there are technicalities that could force your landlord to halt eviction proceedings. These include failure to keep up the property or any sort of retaliation for demanding the landlord follow local tenant laws.

But you’ll need plenty of evidence. Hang on to your lease and read it thoroughly — or if you lost it, pick up a copy from your local Clerk of the Court. Save emails, memos and letters from your landlord and take photos of the property.

“Pictures really are worth 1,000 words in these situations,” said Alan Mills, executive director of the Uptown People’s Law Center in Chicago. “Judges have to figure out who’s telling the truth, and the more documentation, the better chance you have.”

Find a Legal-Aid Service or Church Group Near You

With all of the fine print in each state’s landlord-tenant laws, it was difficult enough just researching this article. If you lose a job, and especially if you have a family to look after, it can be head-spinning to figure out your legal options in an eviction process.

For one, know that a landlord can never lock you out or turn off the utilities — so stay calm and figure out your next move with the help of a local legal-aid office. Most are low-cost or free, and because they focus on working with marginalized folks, they’ll likely have an expert on tenants’ rights.

Rovinsky, the Arizona judge, recently had an eviction case in which a church congregation stepped in with $500 so a tenant could afford to avoid eviction for at least that month. Sometimes it can take just a month for you to get back on your feet.

Have a Backup Plan if You Can’t Fight the Eviction

“Make a contingency plan,” Mills says. “The worst thing that can happen to anyone is having the sheriff come put your stuff out on the street.”

That means using what savings you may have to rent a cheap storage unit for a month. And make sure you have a plan to keep your kids and family in place — whether that be with relatives or a homeless shelter.

Your first step should be to call the nationwide resource assistance hotline 211.

Once you are stabilized, know that an eviction will remain on your record. So before you pay for a background check when you are looking for a new apartment or home to rent, be up front with the landlord. You could spend half a month’s rent on background checks alone if you get denied a few times, Mills said.

But don’t lose hope; nonpayment of rent is the least harmful type of eviction to have on your record.

“If landlords only rented to people who have never been evicted, there would be a lot of open property,” Rovinsky said. “It doesn’t mean you’ll never rent again or that your life is over.”

In Arizona, where Rovinsky hears cases, tenants have five days’ notice ahead of being evicted. But there are three ways to fight an eviction in this state: Pay the rent in full within the five days; pay the rent in full and cover any applicable late fees after five days; or, before a final judgment, pay the rent, late fees and any court costs.

In Arkansas, landlords have two ways to evict you from your rental: a civil lawsuit or a criminal charge. If they pursue the former, they have to give you a three-day written notice that they will be suing you for “unlawful detainer” if you don’t vacate the property. After you receive a court summons, you have five days to object to the eviction.

In the case of a criminal charge, they will give you a 10-day notice of failure to vacate. If you don’t leave in 10 days, you’ll be charged with a misdemeanor and could be fined up to $25 for each additional day you stay.
