Thinking about RP groups. Skip to the bottom if you want my current thoughts and not how it's rehashed.

I have to start with a shout out to Pokémon Echo, which is my one successful rp group. It is a labor of love and there's only four players right now but it's so good. The image links, if you're interested in seeing the blog and pinned post.

There were two others I tried to put up, both of which did ultimately fail.

CRYSTAL LEGENDS

Crystal Legends was my first experiment, actually, and several friends humored me -- I think they liked it, even, but ultimately there just wasn't... enough. Enough interest, enough setup. Enough. It failed.

MIRROR MIRROR

There was actually decent interest in Mirror Mirror, and I think it had more to it by far in the sense of potential plotline. It was open to all Final Fantasy Games, and you would play a canon character or an OC (either way, well developed) and they would be from an AU of their original canon. Everyone would be, meaning that if it echoed ye olde RPC and there were like ten Sephiroth's, ten Clouds, an any number of others, you could still play your character without having to fight for the role. In fact, it made it better because you could more easily work together in-character to figure out what was going on.

Despite the interest no one actually bit. The premise was too story heavy, perhaps? Too confusing? I don't know. I was sad not to get to play in that sandbox. Maybe I'll turn it into a fic... [tagging my writing blog, @ladykf-writes for later!]

HONORABLE MENTIONS

ZRPG

It's not around anymore, but there was a brilliant forum based rp group (that's such a small word when they were so many) set around the games -- by the end, it was situated post Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You played OCs, with OC level starting powers, and you grew with a consistent, forum-wide story line. I cannot do it justice but it was amazing.

PELAGO ISLANDS

PI was my first Tumblr RP group; I played two characters and had an amazing time. It was farm sim based, where you took the characters from a farm sim and dumped them all into a different but similar world... not unlike Mirror Mirror, actually...

Anyway both of those left an imprint on my thoughts.

A FINAL NOTE

My dream is to find a way to unite the RPC in a way that Tumblr really... doesn't? And have a real sense of community and belonging. (Raise your hand if you were there for the SOLDIER Olympics x-years ago) It would be amazing. Final Fantasy is my home, but there's other fandoms I adore too. I'd lean into a generic fantasy, shaped by whoever is interested. Or broaden Mirror Mirror's setting.

But I don't really know that the climate of the RPC is right for this right now. I think it'd be easiest in the long run to keep straight on a forum, but I don't know that most people remember -- if they ever knew -- how to function in a forum. Hey, it's been a long time for me too.

But I don't really know. Does anyone run, participate in, have participated in, or are curious about RP groups? Is there even an audience for this kind of play? I wish I knew. Mirror Mirror's blog turned 2 today and I've been feeling a way about it. I'll reblog this to get other fic writers opinions, some that aren't currently in the RPC, maybe some that couldn't get traction.

If you're interested in any of this, I would greatly appreciate a reblog with comments / tags OR just a comment on here. Likes ❤️ are great for telling me I've been heard, but it tells me nothing about if you liked it or not. 13. Graphics

I'll put it shortly, I don't care much for graphics except the usual "please trim reblogs". I'm here for content. I can enjoy a pretty graphic, but in the end, all I care about is the writing. In fact, I have seen instances where grapphics got in the way of writing at all -- odd formatting, unreadable colors etc. Some people are even 'graphic' about the writing, which ticks my OCD tendencies because no, you cannot use commas as three full stops because it looks pretty, a comma is a comma goddamnit-- I mean, it just makes it unnecessary complex.

If I follow a blog, it's because I care about its content. And it could be written in a pretty character, or just on the most basic theme tumblr has to offer, and even be iconless, I wouldn't care. If it's good writing, I'm here for it.

4. What is your zodiac sign?

I've been told my birth sign is Virgo, but my rising sign is Scorpio. And I can see it; I have a volatile mix of the both of them. If you're looking for Chinese zodiac though, it's the Rat.

7. What drew you to writing your current character(s)?

The Sidhe were originally made for a forum community back in 2009, run by the same team who made the forum for Zone United, and the origin for the mainblog here as well [ @schwarzwaldcr ]. The admin team enjoyed my worldbuilding for the Schwarzwald Visitation Zone enough that they basically asked me to make a character/set of characters for a Legend of Zelda community they wanted to work on, featuring a different dynamic for Ocarina of Time. Originally, Fariah wasn't named Fariah, and she was only in company of about eight other NPCs at the time. That was the original Imperial Landfall set, but as the story progressed and people began expressing interest in what the Sidhe were for what little they saw of them, I was asked to start weaving their entire world together in the hopes new players and old would want to make Sidhe-based characters as well; since Hyrule is under Sidhe control in IL, it made sense more of the race would be seen around. Unfortunately, an internal fight with the admin team saw the full forum deletion of both Zone United and Imperial Landfall, but with pushing from friends I'd kept in contact with in IL, I did finish the Sidhe worldbuilding and lore to completion back then. They weren't reworked for Tumblr consumption until 2015/2016, when another dear friend of mine enabled me into making the first blog and though I've been in and out of the RPC since then, and recently remade the blog as a sideblog from the original. I just can't keep away from these tall seafaring assholes for long, they live rent free in my heart of hearts, though I thank a number of friends for pushing me to keep them alive. They'll stay alive until the end of time. I love them too much to drop them for too long.

10. What is your favorite fictional character (in or out of the current fandom)?

That's a hard one, actually. But I have a number of comfort characters I keep and do roleplay-ish for friends; they have their own sideblog as a multimuse as obscure as they are. Personally, I adhere a lot to Killy/Kyrrie from BLAME!, as well as to Guideau from The Witch and the Beast. Killy is kind of my fictional soulmate, and I mean that in a purely platonic way. He's ancient, his memory's falling apart, he's seen the world over and over in different forms and structures and likely sighs a little when new kids just Don't Get It. He forgets himself but never his objective. I hope he gets the rest he deserves, he needs it more than anything. Guideau fills my niche of Angry For Seemingly No Reason. Not a good person, but not a terrible creature either. She's emotionally stunted and adaptable and openly violent, and I'm here for that. A very different personage from Killy, for sure, but a comfort character nonetheless. I feel catharsis watching her beat the shit out of things. I have others, definitely, and I feel a kinship with many more in this day and age, but these two dictate how I see the world and its cynicist violence.

🎮 — favorite video game(s)?

Dragon Age 2 is one of my favorites though I do love the rest of the franchise. The next game comes out next month after ten years and I'm chewing on the walls in anticipation. I'm also a fan of the Legend of Zelda series and recently I've gotten into Borderlands and am having fun with that.

I have a golden retriever named Kuma, my big fat baby and a bearded dragon named Zeus who seems to think it's time to hibernate so he's been sleepy ( i wish that were me ).

so i've been in the rpc for like... 15 years, at least?? (i dont wanna talk about it) and aside from the wonderful people I've been able to meet I think I really love how much passion everyone has for whatever source material they interact with or their characters (canon or oc) they play as. As a (fake) writer, I think seeing people create fan content is like the biggest compliment you can get. And I love seeing people expand on things and share their own thoughts and interpretations. Like there's a certain excitement in the community that I really love.

🎮 — favorite video game(s)? When it comes to MMO's, it's 14 hands down. I came from WoW and I just love everything about XIV more. For single player games....well nothing I've owned has gotten replayed as many times as Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, so I guess it's that one, though I have been known to play Assassins Creed: Origins for hours, so that one is also up there.

😁 — what’s your favorite part about being part of the rpc? Making new friends through it. While not all of my friends were made through RPing, most of them were. I just find it an easy way to break the ice, since we already know we have something in common we can use to broach into other topics.

A fandom that you feel is open and accepting?

I think the HH/HB is generally okay, but to be real with you I think the most open fandom I’ve ever been a part of was the Adventure Time and Legend of Zelda RPCs back in like 2013. I had a weird fandom less OC, and in a time period where private RPCs and closed off cliques were more common and my writing was way, way worse, I made some friends I still talk to to this day more than a decade later.

At the beginning of a cycle thousands of years ago, a human child's beloved mother fell gravely ill. The island's doctors were at a loss for her condition, and the medicine to cure it could only be obtained in ports far away with money the child didn't have but desperately needed. Frantic to save their mother, the child remembered a legend from their bedtime stories and clad themselves in feathered cloaks, boots, a fist full of small, valuable objects---the child, no more than 10, sought the lair of the guardian dragon of the island to procure the great power they felt was needed to save their mother.

The dragon, Zargincerinth the Lord of the Ice and Tundra, woke to the ringing, incessant pleading of a child at the end of his nose, no larger than a single claw. They offered him their gold. They offered him their service. They offered themselves, if only he would grant them power. "Anything," the child said, "I will do anything if you will make me powerful."

The dragon, risen from his slumber, was not a kind one. Anything would they give, and so everything he would take. Zargincerinth peeled back a scale and exposed a raw open wound. It bled into a silver bowl the size of a small cow he fished from his hoard, and he raised his head and looked down at the small, insignificant child and slid the blood-filled bowl to them.

The child, unable to lift the bowl, was forced to swallow handfuls of the blood at a time to complete the task, and with each swallow was wrought with terrible pains all through their body. Through tears, through begging and weeping, through screams of pain they persisted as the dragon watched on. And when the bowl when they could consume no more, their hands and clothes and mouth stained red, they collapsed against the side of the bowl.

And in their unconsciousness, the dragon rose to stretch its limbs, shaking the entire island. The dragon crawled up the spiraling path from its cave in the depths and emerged, white and opalescent and massive, at the top of the volcano. And the dragon, cruel as it was, who cared not for lived but what they could offer him, devoured the island.

The child spent 10 days in and out of bleary consciousness. They fumbled blindly to find pools of water and drink from them to not die of dehydration, they curled around themselves to not freeze to death in the cold. And when they awoke they felt ragged, sickly and awful, and no stronger than they were before. The cave was empty.

They went home.

Home, and the island, was also empty.

Zargincerinth would return after they had awakened hauling shipwrecked boats closer by one clawed wing, and the child ate from their spoils and rations, their fish catches, the bodies of the slaughtered crews. The dragon, with no concern for the child's safety or health, gave a great flap of his wings and clouded the island over with cold, dark clouds that began to snow. Decisively, he spoke:

"Bring me subjects; bring me gold; bring me tribute and wealth for the power I have given you. Build your island and lives here and worship me, and I will keep the world at bay and grant you strength. Build your world for me, because you have nothing left. You have no choice."

And so the child did.

Stowed away on ships, messages in bottles, desperate pleas with passing merchants. Year by year, decade by decade, the island accumulated its occupants: those seeking power, those seeking refuge, those who were exiled from their own lands. They brought their valuables and offered them; they brought their wares and sold them. They drank the dragon's blood and became resilient against the cold and shaped in the image of serpents: scaled, fanged, clawed. Even the Rito who came to the island became an odd in-between of their Zora ancestors and their avian selves, waterproof feathers and insulation, sharp fangs and sharper claws. For centuries the child grew and watched on, the link between the people and their guardian deity. For centuries, they scorned themselves and their misguided wish.

And after centuries, they demanded it stop.

The child and long since grown into an adult who had grown scales and fangs, and strength to slay beasts with their bare hands and crush rocks in their fists. Fed on dragon blood and strife, the hewn stone around their neck which anchored their strength in them seemed like a chain instead of a guide. "There is only one way to repent for my mistake," the child thought, "I must become a dragon myself and slay the beast."

Face to face with their creator they swallowed the stone, and face to face did they become a beautiful, pale dragon just as his own image. And face to face, above the island they fought. Blood stained the soil, scales loose in the sand, red awash in the waves. For three days did they clash, the sound of their colliding bodies and wings clapping like thunder, shaking the island itself and the water below them. And when three days had passed, the Lord came plummeting down from the sky with his disciple atop him, pinning his corpse to the seabed. From the waters arose a single white dragon, clad in its wounds and vibrant yellow eyes: the human they had been, and the dragon they had become, became indistinguishable from each other in the child's mind. What they were now may as well have been what they always were. Human memories felt such a distant tide now.

Who will protect us now? the island people pleaded. Who will keep us safe?

I will, said the child now a dragon. I will protect you. And when the time comes, I will choose a new disciple among you, and when the time comes they will ascend as I have. And I will descend as the Lord has.

And so the dragon, once a child, dragged its injured body to the depths of the cavern to sit upon its hoard and rest. To receive tribute and distribute boons to its people. And decades after slaying its former, it picks an orphaned child from a sickly family and presents them a bowl of its blood. Drink until you can drink no more, the dragon says, and if you live, power mine I will bestow upon you.

And so the cycle of the Dragon's Sage began.

TRIVIA

The Dragon's Sage is chosen as a child typically from a family that has experienced sudden and severe illness, or who has otherwise been abandoned or is the sole survivor. A child is typically chosen prior to age 11, and may be of any species. Children do not always survive the blood drinking ritual, and so there have been many more sage selections than those who survived to gain power.

Lyric lost their mother and brother to sickness at a young age, and their father abandoned them in his grief. They were chosen for this reason.

Lyric has clawed, scaled hands similar to Rito but more humanoid. Some of this is an effect of the dragon blood and their stone.

The current dragon guardian is Gimmoirer the Hermit.

The cycle of the dragon sage happens typically every few centuries, but has sometimes been shorter. To prevent any one guardian dragon from destroying the island as before, it is considered a necessity that the current Dragon Sage consume the Stone and become a dragon themselves, slaying the former dragon and taking its place.

Over time, the sage turned dragon forgets their past and original shape, and only regards themselves as a Dragon. this is a similar effect as the Secret Stones in TOTK.

BOTW/TOTK: Lyric has stowed away from Dragon Fang on a fishing ship and sailed far off to Hyrule to escape the cycle of the sage. How this affects their environment or if people have heard of them is up to interpretation; the island is desperate to bring them back by any means necessary, as the cycle cannot continue without them, and is intrinsic to the future safety of its inhabitants.
