Steph figures out she has a crush on Sam by her stutter.

It’s especially strange considering Steph doesn’t usually have a stutter. She never even had one when she was very little and just learning how to speak. You were always eloquent, her mother says. Your words were as smooth as your brushstrokes. That, of course, was saying a lot: Even Steph’s earliest paintings, which look more like Jackson Pollock than anybody else, were done with a steady, expert hand. She never had a bump in her paint, and she never had a stutter in her sentences.

That was before the end of seventh grade.

And in all honesty and fairness, Steph had always liked Sam. She thought he was a nice guy. Funny. A little weird, but nothing you couldn’t forgive, namely if you’re a little on the weird side yourself. As a twelve-year-old girl with a picture of Andy Warhol in her locker next to a picture of Leif Garrett, Steph knows she’s more than a little on the weird side. It’s just that her blonde hair has managed to fool the popular kids for a long, long time.

But more and more often, she doesn’t care about what the popular kids think. In fact, she kind of wishes they would leave her alone – that they’d stop assuming she’s one of them. Steph has never wanted to be popular. She just wants to be herself, which is more than she can say for most kids in the seventh grade. But then, there’s Sam and his friends. They’re exactly who they need to be, and they’re not sorry for it, either. Sam seems to be the truest individual of them all. Every time Steph sees him, he’s laughing and dancing and singing like an old proverb with incredible lungs. She can’t help but want to join him. She can’t help but want to love him for real, like all of his friends do.

It doesn’t hurt that he has perfect hair and the prettiest brown eyes Steph has ever seen, outside of Kristy McNichol.

But it all comes to a head on field day in the last week of seventh grade. After a few hours of jumping rope, obstacle courses, and relay races, the seventh graders hang out in the school parking lot, cooling down with water balloons and Popsicles. Robby Blair just beamed Kim Campbell in the face with a water balloon, and she squeals and pouts like she didn’t drop hints about wanting him to do it all morning and into the afternoon. Kim begs for Steph to help her get “revenge” on Robby, but Steph doesn’t budge. She just wants to enjoy her Popsicle in her favorite flavor: orange.

Everything starts off just fine. The Popsicle is cool and delicious. But after a minute or two, things get testy. The strange thing about Catholic schools is that on casual days, you almost never get to wear what you want. Rather, you have to subscribe to their strange theme rules. On field day, every class is supposed to wear their class color, which the faculty arbitrarily decides each year without giving any of the students a vote. This year (like so many years before it), the seventh graders are supposed to wear white. No one really knows why, but Lucy Callaghan likes to go around and tell people that it’s to shame students when their bodies are at “their most vulnerable and pubescent.” The teachers get really quiet when she says this, which leads Steph to believe that Lucy must be onto something. All of this, of course, is to say that Steph is wearing a white t-shirt in the parking lot today. And all of that is to say that her orange Popsicle is melting and staining her shirt in the middle of the water balloon fight.

She doesn’t say anything at first. Just moves toward the teacher to ask if she can go to the bathroom. But she never gets that far. Instead, Sam Doyle runs up to her and smashes a water balloon right on top of the orange stain. She looks at him with a knitted brow.

“There!” Sam says, very proud of himself. “I think that’ll get the orange out.”

“W-were you watching me?” Steph asks.

Sam shrugs.

“Would you be mad if I said yes?”

“I d-don’t know. M-maybe not.”

Sam laughs a little, and for a second, Steph isn’t really sure about why. But then she hears herself speak. It’s like she can’t even remember sounds. It’s like she’s too nervous. Too flustered.

She looks Sam in the eye again, and she thinks she understands.

Oh, she thinks. Oh, great.

It’s the beginning of a strange two decades.

What Do Aye-Ayes Eat?

The aye-aye, Daubentonia Madagascariensis, is an endangered primate located on the island of Madagascar. Originally thought to be insectivorous because of its small size and large foraging range, the aye-aye is actually an omnivore (Randimbiharinirina et. al). In the wild, they can consume many different fruits, vegetables, and protein sources. The aye-aye can eat anything from coconut flesh and milk, to the seeds of the Canarium tree, to the nectar and flowers of the Ravenala Madagascariensis tree, to Terminalia tree nuts (Randimbiharinirina et. al). They are also able to eat the fibrous bark of Afzelia trees and introduced, non-native bamboo shoots found on the island (Pollock et. al.).

Anyone familiar with the aye-aye knows they have a special skinny, long middle finger. This finger serves a special purpose for the aye-aye: it helps it get a large portion of necessary protein. The aye-aye can tap its long finger on a tree and listen for insect larvae moving inside the tree (natgeo). When it hears movement, it can use that same finger to reach inside and scoop out the larvae to eat it (Natgeo).

But what about under human care? Surely it would be hard to replicate the exact same diet of the aye-ayes roaming Madagascar in zoos throughout the U.S. and other countries, right? The job of zookeepers, zoo commissaries, zoo nutritionists, and veterinarians is to mimic an animal’s wild diet as best as possible through the nutrients it receives. Based on caloric needs and macronutrients, a diet can be designed. At Duke Lemur Center in Durham, North Carolina, resident aye-ayes eat a diet that consists of eggs, mealworms and waxworms, tamarinds, apples, carrots, various other fruits and vegetables, and gruel. Gruel is crushed Mazuri Leaf-eater and/or old-world-primate biscuits mixed with a wetter food, like peanut butter, unsweetened applesauce, and various nut milks, to create a paste. At the Denver Zoo, aye-ayes are fed a similar diet: gruel, one starch a day (like sweet potatoes or corn), waxworms, nuts, eggs, and various fruits and vegetables.

Under human care, aye-ayes can also use their long finger to find food, similar to how they would when finding insect larvae inside a tree. The aye-ayes are given special enrichment items with small holes in them, where food is placed, so they can use that long finger to dig it out! They also can receive enrichment with food inside paper scraps, and they have to use their finger to dig through and find their diet.

As with other animals, there are foods that are considered unsafe for aye-ayes. Because aye-ayes are an uncommonly kept species, only recently has research shown that avocados are unsafe for aye-ayes to consume. Avocados contain a toxin called persin, the plant’s natural antifungal, that causes damage to the aye-ayes’ hearts (Bates). Many other species of lemur can eat avocados, and the toxin persin is safe for humans, but other animals such as domestic hoofstock and various bird species also cannot consume the fruit safely (Bates).

Aye-ayes are able to eat a variable diet that includes fruits, vegetables, insects, eggs, and roughage such as tree bark or monkey biscuits. Aye-ayes’ long middle fingers and large ears show their resourcefulness while in use to find insect larvae. Whether in the wild or under human care, their omnivorous diet shows their foraging skills and ability to adapt, increasing our appreciation and need for conservation of the species.

Recherche théorique 2: Cur3es/Kieron Cropper

Kieron Cropper est un artiste basé à Brighton qui utilise le collage de divers magazines, livres et photographies pour créer ses œuvres. Ces collages surréalistes représentent des mondes imaginaires cosmiques inspirés des pochettes d’albums qui ont marqué son enfance. Il a aussi travaillé pour des défilés de mode, des illustrations éditoriales de magazines en ligne et à créer des publicités pour, entre autres, Urban Outfitters. Il dit s’inspirer de plusieurs artistes: «J'aime beaucoup les artistes: Storm Thorgerson, Jackson Pollock, Zach Collins, Leif Podhajsky, Gérard Stricher, David Delruelle, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Damien Tran, Eugenia Loli, Bryan Olson et les studios de design comme We Are Monsters, iWANT, Dowse Design., etc.».

Je voudrais retrouver dans mon oeuvre l’idée d’utiliser des éléments banaux pour créer un univers surréaliste. Les éléments du quotidien représente les traces de l’homme sur la Terre telle que les édifices, les automobiles, les humains, etc. Le fait d’utiliser des images de magazines et des photographies est un aspect que je voudrais aborder, puisque les images sont plus réalistes cela apporterait un rappel à la réalité. Les objets créés par l’homme seraient représentés par des images photographiques pour inciter le spectateur à assimiler que ces objets, créés par l’homme, persiste à travers le temps malgré l’évolution, donc ils sont une trace d’une certaine humanité passée ou présente.

[Images] [Essay by Julian Kreimer] Philadelphia, PA - Tiger Strikes Asteroid Philadelphia is pleased to present Geometry, an exhibition featuring the work of Nancy Baker, Julia Bland, Lindsey Landfried, Kayla Mattes, Alex Paik, and Caroline Santa. Mathematical geometry is concerned with the size, shape, positions of figures, and qualities of space; geometric forms and their transformations build the substance of architectural design. This exhibition brings together six artists who construct a type of architecture through an individual, steadfast, noble gesture. These geometries transcend their basic unit, whether through the repetition of a form, a mark or fold, or the meditation of the over/under act of weaving. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Nancy Baker builds intricate, universe-like, paper constructions and installations which feel similarly large and small, strong and fragile. Baker finds “solace in the geometry of fundamentals . . . she interweaves mathematical data in her constructions that speak to her need for stasis and a reliable reality.” Nancy Baker earned her BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the US, including ODETTA Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Front Room Gallery in Brooklyn, NY; Mark Moore Gallery, CA; Winkleman Gallery, NYC; Schema Projects, Brooklyn, NY; Marcia Wood Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Greenhill Center, Greensboro, NC; Jancar Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; NC Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC; 1708 Gallery, Richmond VA; Heriard Cimino Gallery in NOLA; and Lump Gallery, Raleigh, NC. Nancy Baker has received numerous awards, including two North Carolina Artists Fellowships, a Tennessee Individual Artist Fellowship, and an NEA Southern Arts Fellowship. Baker was awarded a commission with MTA Arts and Design for two train stations in Brooklyn, which was fabricated in stainless steel and was recently commissioned to create a new work for Karen Brooks Hopkins, the Director of Brooklyn Academy of Music. Julia Bland’s works incorporate painting and weaving, developing the structures and patterns that bind disparate elements into a whole. Through weaving, cutting, sewing, dying, and painting, the surface becomes a visible record of her evolving, multi-faceted process. “Weaving and painting are two kinds of binding: the warp to the weft, the image to the object. Geometry is a kind of grammar; process is a kind of syntax. Logic is pervasive, it fails, and it persists.” Bland’s solo exhibitions include Ways To Cross at Lighthouse Works and Underbelly at Helena Anrather in 2018, Things to Say at Night at 17 Essex in 2017, and If You Want To Be Free at On Stellar Rays in 2015. Reviews of her work have appeared in The New York Times, Art in America, Art Critical, Modern Painters, The New Yorker, The Villager, Artefuse, Hyperalleric, and Sculpture Magazine. She has been an artist in residence at MacDowell, The Shandaken Project: Storm King, The Sharpe- Walentas Space Program, Yaddo, Lighthouse Works, The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and received awards including The Milton and Sally Avery fellowship from Yaddo, the Carol Scholsberg Memorial Prize, The Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust Travel Fellowship, and The Florence Leif Award for Excellence in Painting. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and her MFA from Yale School of Art in 2012. The mark making of Lindsey Landfried’s folded works on paper evokes an ephemeral handwriting like binary code or weaving. “Folds incorporate a patina of space, shifting vantage points or perspectival spaces. The marks, incessant and reverent writing, or obsessive and mechanized weaving, are on once stable, marred, noisy, staccato, and inconsistent.” Lindsey Landfried lives and works in State College, PA. Her work has been exhibited at Momenta Art, Temporary Storage, Tiger Strikes Asteroid NY, SPACE Gallery of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Mississippi State University, and Space 4 Art: San Diego. Landfried was a 2014-15 recipient of a Pollock-Krasner award and a 2013 fellow of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst for artistic practice. She has completed residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and Takt Kunstraum Tapir Berlin. Featured in New American Paintings and winner of the 2015 jurors award at the UNC Asheville Works on Paper Biennial, she is represented by KWADRAT Berlin and Galleri Urbane Dallas Texas. Kayla Mattes’ luscious tapestries explore systems of organization in contemporary life, and the ephemerality of digital culture. “I submit myself to the grid-like structure of the loom, but break down –and occasionally play with – its preconceived assumptions of utility or the decorative. . . Whether I’m simply dismantling the rectangle, or subverting tradition through the contemporary imagery and language that I depict within the weave, I embrace the power of textiles to communicate. In the end, what materializes is a series of layered visual systems—organized yet unruly, witty and absurd.” Kayla Mattes is a visual artist working across disciplines including weaving, sculpture and installation. She archives the ephemeral vernacular of digital culture through the interconnected threads of tapestry. She also works collaboratively in the socially engaged collective, BESTTEST. Recent exhibitions include PØST, (Los Angeles, CA), FISK Gallery (Portland, OR), LVL3 (Chicago, IL), Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland, OR), Border Patrol Gallery (Portland, ME) and Hunter College (NYC). Her work has been featured in Maake Magazine, Vice’s Creators, Rhizome, and Sculpture Magazine and will be included in Weavers: Contemporary Makers on the Loom, an upcoming book written by Katie Tregidden and published by Ludion. She received a BFA in Textiles at Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Alex Paik’s paper based installations are at once effortless and awe-inspiring. Each piece is temporary, and can be reconfigured. Paik’s work has a strong connection to the architectural build up and break down of contrapuntal music. He uses “repetition not so much as a compositional device, but more as a way to explore and develop the possibilities of each unit. Or, to borrow Glenn Gould’s description of Bach’s late fugues, to “give the impression of an infinitely expanding universe.” Alex Paik is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work has been shown at galleries and art fairs nationally and internationally. He is the founder and Director of Tiger Strikes Asteroid, a non-profit network of artist-run spaces; Curator of Satellite Art Show, an alternative art fair in Miami; and Chief Curator at Trestle Gallery, a non- profit arts organization in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Caroline Santa’s works on paper drawings and paintings are incremental installations or interchangeable parts that can be reworked and recontextualized, much like text or language. “Like Schwitters’ Merzbau, I think about my work as existing in its current scale or expanding into larger architectural environments, enveloping a viewer’s personal or mental space.” Based in Philadelphia, Caroline Santa has an M.F.A. from The University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of The Charles Addams Prize. She has exhibited her work throughout the northeast in Philadelphia and New York, as well as in San Antonio, TX at The Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum. Internationally, Caroline was an artist in residence at the Lucy Tejada Center of Culture in Pereira, Colombia, where she had a solo exhibition. Caroline is a founding member of Tiger Strikes Asteroid. Caroline recently collaborated with the Grammy Award winning choir The Crossing and composer Joshua Stamper to create a multimedia installation in The Icebox, Philadelphia’s largest uninterrupted gallery space.
