TIL these racoons that are kept in the zoo because their genetic difference would make them vulnerable to predators in the wild Literally too cute to live.
[ID: four pics of two unbelievably cute racoons with light gray and white coloring. 1) both, looking off camera in different directions. With their paws together. One has its tongue out. 2) A close up of the soulful baby eyes of one. 3) A portrait with one of them looking past the camera. It looks like it's smiling. 4) both in a hammock looking over the edge at camera.

Alright time to talk about the thing that is my entire life.
African painted dogs! These gorgeous canids are unique in so many ways, but my favorite useless fact is that they don’t have dewclaws!
Here are some of my pictures of painted dogs I’ve seen in person at zoos. Someday I hope to see them in the wild.

These are all from the Denver Zoo. That last picture is of Nigel, the three legged painted dog! His rear right leg had to be amputated for health reasons and his tail was damaged as a pup and ended up partially falling off. He’s doing super well now and is such an amazing individual. I was lucky enough to interview one of his keepers for a project in college!

These guys are from Animal Kingdom. Hate on Disney all you want but animal kingdom is an AZA accredited facility that participates in conservation efforts so don’t shit talk it on my post.

This beauty is obviously deceased, but I’m including them regardless! They are part of the collection and displays at the Chicago Field Museum!

I volunteer/study at the zoo and I try to get at least one sketch done before I leave, and the boys are right by the entrance/exit so they're one of my most common subjects, also I love them.

that video of the small orangutan playing with the big one's cheek pouches got me thinking, do orangutans bexome more gregarious in scenarios where they have to be close together, like zoos? do mothers stay involved with their children for longer/do males get involved with children at all? or do they continue 'life as normal but theres a lot of us'?
They do! While orangutans act how they do in the wild, they are quite adaptable and can be quite surprising. Captive raised orangutans tend to be bolder and more risk taking than wild raised counterparts, and captive behaviours can be quite surprising. Orangutans have wide dispersal in the wild, so in captivity there is far more interaction, which can lead to interesting situations. A great example of this is the charming story of Denver Zoo’s Berani and Cerah!
Tumblr media
Though in the wild orangutan fathers are absentees, when Cerah’s mother passed away Berani decided to take up the task of raising his daughter in her stead. Though this wasn’t expected, zookeepers have said that he has been tending to her every need and has been the gentle giant Cerah leans on. This is super interesting (not to mention adorable) as their social flexibility indicates that orangutan nature may be more of a case of circumstance and disposition rather than a rigid role.

Accredited zoos are absolutely essential to global conservation efforts. And also to the antivenom distribution network.

The Results Are In - Maury Povich?!!!
Maury Povich recently helped out the Denver Zoo to help ID the father of a rather cute baby orangutan Siska the orangutan is four months old, but it was unclear if her father was 30-year-old Berani or 16-year-old Jaya, the zoo said on X.  On Monday, the zoo revealed they were settling the paternity debate. “The DNA results are in, and we’re delighted to share that we now know who Siska’s father…
