Leigh Brackett - The Long Tomorrow (1955) One of the great joys of reading things more or less at random is the amazing discoveries you end up making. I've been reading Hugo nominees, so that it isn't totally random as there's a previous selection and keeping it within genre fiction, and in the 1956 nominees I reach this. I knew Leigh Brackett both from some short stories and as one of the few women writers in the golden age of Science Fiction, but I had never read one of her novels. This is an amazing book that grabs your attention right from the start and never lets up. It's an early example of post-apocalyptic American Pastoral writing, in a nearish future, after a nuclear holocaust America has become a country of spread out rural communities, deeply technophobic and religious. Our protagonist is brought up in a New Mennonite community hearing fairy tales about the past from his very aged grandmother. As he realizes that there might still be hidden communities keeping the forbidden knowledge of the past, he gets a severe case of wanderlust. It's a beautifully written work, a kind of Mark Twainish setting in a post-apocalyptic world with the mysteries of the past being always present. This was a truly surprising work, I had not heard of it before and it immediately jumped into my top 10 of SF novels. Brackett, probably catering to her public, doesn't really explore any issues about women here, this is a men led story, but what we get is, in comparison to other works of the time, a much more socially centred SF, not concerned with nuts and bolts, but with human nature. Ideas about knowledge, nature vs civilization, the bliss of ignorance and the sacrifices that you make from simply knowing things are beautifully explored in stellar prose writing. Amazing discovery.
