23 years ago tonight, I saw “Sleepy Hollow” as the second part of a double feature. It probably remains my most anticipated movie ever considering I was obsessed with the story and the Disney cartoon all throughout childhood. Just an absolute, front-to-back masterpiece. #sleepyhollow #johnnydepp #christinaricci #mirandarichardson #michaelgambon #caspervandien #jeffreyjones #richardgriffiths #ianmcdiarmid #michaelgough #christopherwalken #marcpickering #christopherlee #lisamarie #timburton #andrewkevinwalker #tomstoppard #emmanuellubezki #dannyelfman #ichabodcrane #theheadlesshorseman #bluray (at Eastpointe Apartments) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClK5F4Sgb1i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Tumblr media
Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace is not good but I can’t muster the enthusiasm required to hate it. I remember the hype when the original release date was approaching. People were going nuts. Perhaps it's nostalgia or the knowledge that better films came later that prevent me from savaging the most famously anticipated and disappointing prequel film ever made.
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away Jedi knights Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) are sent to settle a trade dispute, only to discover an army of droids invading the planet Naboo. Fleeing with Queen Amidala (Keira Knightley) and her handmaidens (which include Natalie Portman), the Jedi are accompanied by a peculiar creature named Jar-Jar Binks (completely animated, voiced by Ahmed Best). While searching for a way to inform the rest of the galaxy of the invasion, the group meet droids R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), C-3P0 (voiced by Anthony Daniels), as well as a young slave named Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd).
The Phantom Menace embodies everything that’s terrible about prequels. It’s unnecessary. Who cares what Annakin was like as a kid? All it does is take away the mystique of the character. It also pointlessly reminds you of the reasons why you came to see the movie. C-3P0 is here and he doesn’t do anything noteworthy. You take him out and you’ve got a better movie because his origin makes no sense (why would a boy on Tattoine build a protocol droid?) and because he appears to be there only because he could be.
The more you scrutinize the film, the less it feels like it belongs in the Star Wars universe. The attitude people have towards droids seems inconsistent. About 45 minutes in, we're introduced to a species that's immune to Jedi mind tricks. Not just one individual whose years of training has strengthened their mental resolve, but an entire species? I was under the assumption that the Force was something present in all creatures but this random merchant (of a species that could never exist in real life) is unaffected. Feels less like an organic choice and more like a plot decision and it's not the only one.
The acting? it’s bad. I don’t blame the performers though. When one performer can't deliver their lines right, it's on them. Two? they must've been feeding off each other. When EVERYONE is bad? It’s the director’s fault. Ultimately, it's George Lucas who deserves the blame. The creatures whose design doesn’t make sense, the muddled mythology, the contrived plot, the overreliance on CGI, all come down to him. Lucas wrote and directed with no one standing over his shoulder to question the decisions.
Was it doomed from inception? No. The famous pod race is exciting. It’s completely different from what we've gotten before in the series. Even when the familiar lightsabers are unsheathed, it feels new. The choreography is excellent. The blades fly so fast it succeeds in telling you about this different version of the Jedi we never knew: these superpowerful galactic guardians that no normal adversary could hope to go up against. There are plenty of cool visuals throughout. Queen Amidala’s costumes are gorgeous, and the music/sound effects are terrific. The computer effects are dated but were the best they could be at the time. The blaster noises, the clicks and clanks of the droids, the alien grunts are awesome. Great foley work. Despite everything that’s wrong, there’s enough cool stuff to keep you wondering if perhaps, this time, you'll see something that'll change your mind about the film.
I can’t recommend Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace to anyone except those who have already seen it. The story adds nothing to the mythology. If you’ve seen it before, you know whether you can sit through it once more. If you can't it's because those burns still hurt all those years later. At least it’ll get better from here, you can take comfort in that. (On DVD, November 27, 2015)

Review : Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Tumblr media
Of all film sagas and intellectual properties, few can hold a candle to the cultural impact connected to the mighty Star Wars franchise.  After extremely meager, shoestring beginnings, the vision and foresight of George Lucas not only turned his creation into a true phenomenon, it inherently changed the commercial nature of films forever.  After forty-plus years, spin-off stories and endless speculation, the original trilogy of trilogies comes to a close in 2019 as the world readies itself for Star Wars : The Rise of Skywalker.
Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) has appeared seemingly from nowhere, posing a threat to the power that Supreme Leader Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) has amassed in the wake of the death of Snoke.  With the help of a Sith Wayfinder, one of two in the galaxy, Ren is able to track down Palpatine, who attempts to persuade Ren to the Dark Side by revealing that he created Snoke.  Palpatine also offers Ren a vast armada of Star Destroyers before charging him with a quest to seek out and kill Rey (Daisy Ridley), the last of the remaining active Jedi.  As Rey continues her Jedi training under the supervision of General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Chewbaca seek out information from a spy within the ranks of the First Order.  To the horror of the resistance, they discover that Palpatine is alive and actively seeking to strike down all threats to his power.  With the fate of the galaxy in their hands, the group of Resistance fighters and friends band together, seek out resources throughout the galaxy and ultimately attempt to make a stand once and for all against Palpatine in a journey involving much education, pain and sacrifice.
Sacrifice really and truly is the name of the game in this film.  Power, friends, pride, dark desires and souls are all put on the sacrificial table throughout the course of The Rise of Skywalker, with multiple characters feeling the pain that comes in the wake of said sacrifices.  Ren and Rey are given paralleling journeys of familial discovery, Finn is given new ways to confront where he stands in regards to his current involvement in the Resistance versus his former involvement as a Storm Trooper, Poe is given new dimension and new responsibility in rapid succession, and Leia makes a grand gesture in hopes of teaching her son that he is still redeemable in spite of his quest for dark power.  Even Hux is allowed to complete his unique character arc that has existed in the modern Star Wars trilogy involving the First Order that fits in with the sacrificial theme.
For all of the complaining that the Star Wars fandom is capable of, J.J. Abrams did manage to take ideas presented by Rian Johnson in the previous film and not only integrate them back into the storytelling, but expand on them in extremely fascinating ways.  In particular, the psychic connection between Ren and Rey is back, but the way that the two are able to not only interact with one another, but the environments around them as well, makes for truly captivating cinema.  The pattern of numerous planet jumping that seems to have invaded the modern run of Star Wars movies is present, but luckily it is not as disorienting as it was in films like Rogue One.  Some would call the wide range of cast members that make appearances, both current and present, done in the vein of fan service, but in my opinion, it is mostly done tastefully, and not at the expense of the spirit of the story.
The balance of current characters versus legacy characters is sound, with nobody presenting themselves in a way that feels forced or out of place, or jarring to the point of disrupting the viewing experience.  The growing energy between Ren and Rey is really allowed to shine front and center for The Rise of Skywalker, with their chemistry doing much of the heavy lifting in regards to the tension present in the film.  As with the tradition of each preceding film, the scale continues to rise, with the sheer quantity of ships in this film reaching mind-blowing limits, and the menagerie of creatures on Pasaana mirroring that of a real-life Burning Man festival.  The hand to hand battles are some of the stronger presented in the series, and though it may have been a bit of overkill in the final battle, it was impressive to see the number of ships that showed up.  The continual use of familiar locations as grounds for new exploration is also effective, both in terms of the present narrative and the nostalgic echoes they provide.
Daisy Ridley manages to find a delicate balance between confidence and uncertainty, which plays well against the rage-filled determination of Adam Driver.  John Boyega and Oscar Isaac keep the bromance going with plenty of comedic banter and inspirational support during the battles.  Carrie Fisher’s performance is bittersweet in light of her passing during The Last Jedi, and to be completely honest, I cannot tell how much was shot previously and how much is CGI, which is a testament to the CGI work if it was used.  The familiar folks do what they’ve been doing for years, with Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels and Billy Dee Williams all falling right back into stride for their famous characters.  Damhnall Gleeson is given less to do than the previous two films, but in light of Richard E. Grant and Ian McDiarmid putting in villainous performances of their own, the balance of bad guys works out.  Keri Russell, Kelly Marie Tran, and Joonas Suotamo pop up as familiar faces as well.  The sheer volume of talented people that lend their voice talents is massive, with the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, James Earl Jones, Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Ewan McGregor, Sir Alec Guiness, Frank Oz, Liam Neeson and many more making vocal cameos.  At the risk of going into true spoiler territory, I will refrain from mentioning more names, but rest assured that you will not be disappointed by those lending their presence to this epic wrap-up.
For what it’s worth, it’s certainly something to think about now that we’ve reached the end of the main Star Wars road.  The franchise shows no signs of slowing down in terms of side stories, but the main narrative and its iconic characters have ingrained themselves deeply into the hearts of many, so seeing the story come to a close carries weight.  It will be fun, however, to try and watch all nine films (and maybe even Rogue One thrown in for posterity) in a long weekend once The Rise of Skywalker finds it’s way to home release.  Don’t wait, however, for home release on this one... definitely go check it out in theater.
