Happy 61st birthday to The Proclaimers Charlie And Craig Reid born on 5th March 1962.

Growing up in Edinburgh, Cornwall, and the Fife town Auchtermuchty, they listened to early rock & roll and country, gravitating toward artists like Jerry Lee Lewis and Hank Williams. After playing in various punk bands during their school years, they formed The Proclaimers in 1983 and quickly developed a regional fan base with a particularly devoted following in Inverness. As an acoustic duo singing -style harmonies in the mid-‘80s.
After touring with the Housemartins the Scottish duo were signed by Chrysalis records, they were immediately compared to the Everly Brothers. Considering their energetic, melodic folk-rock, the comparison made some sense, even though the Proclaimers didn’t really sound like the Everlys. Instead, the band was a post-punk pop band, aggressively displaying their thick accents on sweet, infectiously melodic songs about love, politics, and life in Scotland. After two albums in the late '80s,This Is the Story and Sunshine on Leith, the second featured one of my fave songs by the twins, My Old Friend The Blues, a Steve Earle song about depression.
The band disappeared for several years, suffering from personal problems and severe writer’s block. When their 1988 song “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” was used in the 1993 film Benny & Joon, the duo began to receive massive radio airplay in America, sending them into the Top Ten in the U.S., as well as the rest of the world; it was their first taste of worldwide success.
Luckily, the band was close to completing their third album at the time, Hit the Highway, leaving them in a position to capitalise on their success. The single Let’s Get Married received little attention, and the band pretty much disappeared in the eyes of the general public, but diehard fans like myself knew they were special and still had loads to offer.
They made various contributions to several movie soundtracks – Dumb & Dumber and Bottle Rocket – during the latter part of the decade, but family priorities took full scale.
The new millennium gave us a much more fresh sounding Proclaimers. They inked a new U.S. deal with Nettwerk, and Persevere marked Craig and Charlie Reid’s fourth album, and my favourite. It was a return to form; singing about the grim and glory of their native Scotland, but also a sign of the prime of life, my pick of the album being Scotland’s Story which drew parallels between historical migrations to Scotland and arrivals of more recent immigrants. The song list included the beautifully crafted My Act of Remembrance, which paid tribute to their late father, if you haven’t listened to it please do on the YouTube video I have posted.
Arms of steel, hair of gold Royal blue eyes, with a rebel soul You scared me, you still do But I loved you More than you ever knew….
The band’s fifth effort, Born Innocent, appeared on their own imprint Persevere in February 2004, produced by fellow Scot Edwyn Collins, Restless Soul followed a year later, the song When Love Struck You Down is another strong song by the brothers. Life with You in 2007 gave us the song of the same name which is a karaoke favourite in Scotland. I sing the older songs from the 80’s myself.
The Proclaimers have given us 12 studio albums and they tour worldwide, my favourite wee anecdote from the Reid's is regards their song Throw the R away. The record companies who were keen to sign them told them unless they ditched the Scottish accents they would not be successful, the song tells us
You say that if I want to get ahead The language I use should he left for dead It doesn’t please your ears.
In an interview a couple of years ago Charlei commented “it was a conscious thing, because we were singing about where we live, our experiences and it just felt stupid to sing in an English or American accent.” Quite right too.
In 2020 Craig and Charlie are amongst fellow Scots Bill Paterson, Rebus writer Ian Rankin, and bizarrely Irish-American actress Saoirse Ronan, who have lent their voices to a new audio guide for Edinburgh Castle. I have never used the guides myself, but may do so on my next visit to see how they sound.
The boys have now released their 12th studio album, Dentures Out featuring 13 songs clocking in at a lean, tight, focused 34 minutes.
Charlie and Craig are in the middle of a world tour just now, having played North America they are now in Australia, then onto New Zealand before heading home for dates in Wales and England, then gigs in Kelso, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
The song I have chosen, I hope reflects the Scottish attitude that we welcome all immigrants into our country with open arms.

Okay so I don’t really post any theories often but I just have to say that I strongly believe the the real identity of Augustus is Jurgen Leitner and I two reasons for that l:
The voice of Jurgen Leither and the voice of Augustus are similar enough to the point they could have the same VA
It would mean that a jmj. Error would be an anagram of the the three voice:
J — Jonathan sims
M — Martin Blackwood
J — Jurgen Leitner

my secret good eragon ideas p2
ep4. finally we might get some PACE and ACTION in this bitch. arya is captured and being tortured for information on the egg and the varden: saphira is growing restless and just growing, larger and larger, almost enough to be ridden. she’s also trying and failing to learn to produce fire. roran is courting katrina still, but her reluctance to abandon her father’s wishes is putting a strain on them. he sees the ra’zac leaving sloan’s store. so does eragon, waddling back into town with his chafed thighs from attempting to ride saphira. despite not knowing who or what they are, he can tell their presence is a bad sign. he and saphira decide it they’ll have to flee soon, to avoid his family being put in danger. he steals hides for a saddle and is caught by brom, who puts 2 and 2 together and forces his gedwëy ignasia into his vision. angry, terrified, brom saves eragon from the advancing ra’zac (we see their beak-like faces for the first time) and forces him into the forest to show him saphira. the ra’zac retaliate, burning the farm. brom grapples with eragon, secretly using magic to keep him from escaping. back at the farm, roran coordinates men from the town to put out the fire. too late. the crops are lost and garrow is dead. he buries his father and, suspecting this was no mistake, decides to lay low in therinsford where he’s been working at the mill (YES IM TAKING FUCKING LIBERTIES WITH RORAN’S STORYLINE DEAL WITH IT!!!) brom tells eragon they need to flee, who, king bitch that he is, initially refuses and tries to return to carvahall. brom knocks him out and drags him on his way.
ep5. the road trip for revenge begins!!! brom is (sort of secretly) leading eragon to where he knows members of the varden will be, under the guise of leading him to train and catch the ra’zac. they lost track of the ra’zac pretty quickly, but brom insists that the leither oil could only have been shipped through teirm. eragon’s being a little bitch as per. i love him. he dreams of arya, but keeps it a secret. brom begins to train him in history. eragon, being a little bitch, refuses to pay full attention and only wants to learn to fight with a sword - brom carries two, after all. typical reluctant father-son dynamic shit. he watches, confused, as brom lights a fire seemingly out of nowhere - hears him say brisingr without understanding what it means. they get ambushed by urgals just a few days from teirm. brisingrgate happens, duh. brom is livid with him for using magic so foolishly, not realising that eragon had no clue it was a spell, nor that he was able to use magic at all. brom resolves to teach him the basics of magic, too, letting eragon believe (nudged by saphira) that he’s just an old magician. when they arrive in teirm, saphira is forced to stay in the forest nearby the city - she’s too large. brom and eragon are confronted by wanted posters with their faces on them. they arrive at jeod’s
ep6 im SORRY these are so long. knowing now they are wanted and known widely, brom relents and promises to teach eragon to use a sword - so long as eragon swears not to use magic until brom decides he’s ready, and listens to his history lessons. eragon reveals he was never properly taught to read or write, as garrow told him it had brought his mother no good and would bring him none, either. jeod takes it upon himself to tutor eragon in the basics. he sneaks out to explore the city, his hair coloured with soot and walking with a false cane, and stumbles upon angela’s shop where she & solembum deliver their prophecies. shaken, he returns to jeod’s where he overhears brom and jeod whispering about the egg and the elven woman who was tasked with ferrying it. he comes clean about dreaming of arya and asks them what it means. they reveal their allegiance to the varden, and that the rebels had been ferrying the egg for years, waiting for it to choose a rider. after some time, it’s clear the empire must suspect they’re in the area, and are forced to flee. brom gives eragon za’aroc, and when they leave, begins to train him in swordsmanship and magic.
ok this is too long again ill finish later

Minnesota Twins-Chicago Cubs Series Preview
8.5.24-David Festa RHP (1-2) 6.98 ERA Vs. Kyle Hendricks RHP (3-9) 6.86 ERA
8.6.24-Pablo Lopez RHP (10-7) 4.65 ERA Vs. Shoto Imanaga LHP (8-2) 3.09 ERA
8.7.24-Joe Ryan RHP (7-7) 3.59 ERA Vs. Javier Assad RHP (5-3) 3.19 ERA
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins swept the White Sox and went (12-1) against them in 2024. They gained two games on the Indians and are 4.5 games within first place. Byron Buxton left Sunday's game after crashing in the wall while making a catch. He was cleared to play, but the team removed him from the game due to the score. Carlos Correa jogged and did fielding drills at Target Field as he works his way back. I think a realistic timeline is two weeks. Justin Topa pitched on Friday and Sunday, which might have been the last step in being activated. The earliest they would activate him would be on Tuesday given the workload. Christian Vazquez has been hot with a .333 average since the All-Star Break. Matt Wallner is hitting .320 with three homers since the break. Byron Buxton has smacked five homers and knocked in eight since the break. The team released Josh Staumont, who was designated for assignment to make room for Trevor Richards last week.
The Cubs At A Glance- The Cubs have been an average team in 2024. They had a hot start with a (17-10) April, but May and June were not good. The Cubs held their own in July with a (13-12) record and sit six games out of the last National League Wild-Card spot. Chicago had an interesting trade deadline. They traded Chris Morel to the Rays for Isaac Paredes, traded Mark Leither to the Yankees, and traded for Nate Pearson from the Blue Jays. That didn't indicate whether they were buying or selling. Cody Bellinger has been okay as he resigned with the Cubs. He is hitting .274 with just eleven homers. Seiya Suzuki has sixteen homers and fifty-three runs knocked in. Ian Happ has a team-leading sixty-two RBI. Michael Busch has found a home with fifteen homers. The Cubs starters have a 3.84 ERA, which is seventh-best in baseball. Shot Imanaga has been great with a 3.09 ERA over 116 1/3 innings. Justin Steele and Jameson Taillon are having strong years. Jorge Lopez found a new home with the Cubs after getting released by the Cubs. He has allowed just one run over 13 2/3 innings. Hector Neris is the closer with fifteen saves. Tyson Miller has a 1.57 ERA since joining the Cubs. Drew Smyly has been good out of the bullpen as well.
What To Watch For- The Cubs are (21-19) all-time against the Twins. The Twins took two out of three against the Cubs last May at Target Field. The Twins haven't been to Wrigley Field since 2021 when they won a pair of games late in the season. Pablo Lopez is (1-2) with a 2.66 ERA in four games against the Cubs. Dansby Swanson has two homers off Lopez. Kyle Hendricks is (1-2) with a 4.34 ERA in three starts against the Twins. Max Kepler has two career homers off Hendricks. David Festa, Shoto Imanaga, and Javier Assad have never faced their opponent before. Joe Ryan is (2-1) with a 2.81 ERA in three starts against the Cubs. He is one of the last Twins pitchers ever to hit in a game. He went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts on September 22nd of 2021. This should be a fun series for the Twins. I hope fans travel to Wrigley to see that great venue this week.
-Chris Kreibich-

The Scottish naturalist and mineralogist Robert Jameson was born on July 11th 1774 at Leith.
Jameson was educated at Leith Grammar school, where he excelled and went on to became the apprentice of the Leith surgeon John Cheyne, planning on becoming a ships surgeon. He also attended classes at the University of Edinburgh studying botany, chemistry and natural history. By 1793 he had abandoned medicine and the idea of a life at sea, and focused instead on science, particularly geology and mineralogy, his class mates included Joseph Black and Thomas Dick, two future notable members of the Edinburgh Eliterati that were part of The Scottish Enlightenment.
He must have impressed the University hierarchy as that same year he was given charge of the Natural History department, at the age of just 19, the beginning of a long association lasting over 50 years. In 1804 he succeeded Dr Walker as the third Regius Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh University, during this period he became the first eminent exponent in the British Isles of the Wernerian geological system.
Although not always agreeing with him, Jameson worked with the eminent James Hutton who is often referred to as the ‘father’ of modern geology.
As a teacher, Jameson is said to be remarkable for his power of imparting enthusiasm to his students, and from his class-room there radiated an influence which gave a marked impetus to the study of geology, but not by all his pupils, a young student by the name of Charles Darwin apparently found the lectures boring, this may have been to Darwin being only 16 at the time and Jameson much more senior at 52.
Over Jameson’s fifty year tenure, he built up a huge collection of mineralogical and geological specimens for the Museum of Edinburgh University, including fossils, birds and insects. By 1852 there were over 74,000 zoological and geological specimens at the museum, and in Britain the natural history collection was second only to that of the British Museum. Shortly after his death, the University Museum was transferred to the British Crown and became part of the Royal Scottish Museum, now the Royal Museum, in Edinburgh’s Chambers Street. He was also a prolific author of scientific papers and books, including the Mineralogy of the Scottish Isles.
Robert Jameson died in Edinburgh on 19th April 1854. A portrait of Robert Jameson is housed by the Scottish National Portrait Gallery Edinburgh, and a bust of him is in the Old College of the University of Edinburgh.

More tram-spotting than Trainspotting’: the new tram linking Leith to Edinburgh. The tramline to the old port means its Michelin-starred restaurants, seafront and cool venues are now just a few stops away from Edinburgh city centre. ‘Leith is changing. Bars are becoming bistros, and barbers are opening with bars in them,” says walking guide Paul Stewart, founder of Edinburgh Street Tours. He points to the new tram station atop Leith Walk and says, “It feels more tram-spotting than Trainspotting,” a reference to the drug-addled 90s black comedy written by Leith-born Irvine Welsh. Stewart is not complaining as he used to survive on the streets of this old port where, in the 1980s, half the unemployed had been jobless for over a year. It was no accident that Leithers the Proclaimers used Leith as the video backdrop for their damning riposte to Thatcherite Scotland, Letter from America.
