✤ Crime Fics ✤
A series of posts with the top five fics of each category by kudos plus five more hidden gems from that category! Remember to leave kudos and a comment on the fics you enjoyed to show your appreciation! You can find our other recs here.
- Top 5 H/L Fics -
1️⃣ my heart, in deadly rhythm by orphan_account (M, 42k)
There exists somewhere a very, very small list containing the names of people who don’t want Louis Tomlinson dead. Harry Styles may or may not be one of those people.
(or a Spies!AU in which Liam is the Wade to Louis' Kim Possible, Zayn seduces people for intel, Niall is an expert at blowing things up, and Harry is more than a bit famous in his particular field... or infamous, actually. And Louis? Well, Louis just wishes people would quit trying so bloody hard to kill him all the time.)
2️⃣ A Rose, By Any Other Name by iwillpaintasongforlou / @canonlarry (E, 10k)
“I don’t understand, Mr. Tomlinson,” Harry says quietly.
“You don’t have to understand, sweetheart.” Louis reaches over and runs his thumb across Harry’s cheekbone, watching the boy’s breathing pause as he dares not move beneath the touch of this strange, imposing man. “All you need to know is that you work for me now, and that I’m going to keep you safe from all the bad people in this city, you hear?”
Louis Tomlinson is the head of New York City's mafia, and Harry is the beautiful boy from Texas who falls in with the wrong crowd (which turns out to be the right crowd).
3️⃣ Little Cub by aace1234 (NR, 68k)
Harry is head of the underground, he's ruthless, possessive, feared and powerful.
Louis is a student, his dad works for Harry but Louis has no idea about the underground world.
What happens when Louis Dad causes trouble and Harry kidnaps Louis for revenge.
4️⃣ we've got the world in our hands by sarcasticfluentry (E, 54k)
A mutants/superpowers AU. Louis and his friends attend the Cowell Institute for General Education and Mutant Training in London; when Louis meets Harry, the newest student at the Cowell Institute, he immediately recruits Harry to help play matchmaker for his friend Zayn. Harry and Louis are so caught up in meddling in Zayn's love life, though, that they don't notice that their own friendship is progressing into something more. Meanwhile, an ominous threat up north grows slowly until suddenly, no mutant - or human - is safe.
5️⃣ Watch Him As He Goes by LoadedGunn (M, 14k)
It's why Harry loves assignments with Louis; they're thrilling in a way. It's like he never rests. He's this animated, gorgeous guy who's all over the place and Harry actually has to work hard just to catch up to him.
It kind of reminds him of trying to stalk a predator stalking its prey, with his old 70-300 mm lens. Only the predator is a cheeky arsehole. "Come along Harold, I know you usually wait for your zebras to pose for you but here you've got to think on your feet," Louis yelled one time, before disappearing to interview Detective Payne. Never mind the fact Harry was slow in the first place because of Louis' tight jeans.
Or, the AU where Louis' the best police reporter in the country, Harry's the new photographer who is more used to penguins than human subjects, and also there are superheroes.
HIDDEN GEMS:
💎 this charade (was never going to last) by @scrunchyharry (E, 68k)
On the surface, CitizenX, an international caritative nonprofit, looked like any other nonprofit, funding humanitarian missions worldwide and striving to make the world a better place, one donation at a time.
At least, that was what Harry thought, until he was hired as a computer specialist for a spinoff agency called carish, whose true purpose was to reveal CitizenX’s tangled web of lies.
As if the whole ‘industrial spy’ business was not stressful enough, Harry found himself in a hatred-at-first-sight relationship with one of his new coworkers, Louis, a man intent on detesting Harry.
When the worst happened and Harry and Louis found themselves thrown together in hiding, with only each other to rely on, Harry never could have predicted the turn their relationship would take.
Nor could he anticipate that it would all be taken away from him and he would have to decide how far he was willing to go to get Louis back.
💎 All My Roads Lead to You by @dandelionfairies (M, 41k)
Harry’s stuck in a life he didn’t choose after leaving home at eighteen. Bartending and running drugs were never on his list. Louis is an undercover cop sent in to figure out exactly what’s going on inside of the bar. Neither could have known they’d be drawn to each other.
It’s obvious to Louis that Harry isn’t aware of everything that happens in the backroom. It’s obvious that Nick [Grimshaw] has used Harry’s vulnerability, insecurities, and naivety to keep the man exactly where he wants him.
Harry has never admitted to anyone who he is. They wouldn’t accept him. In fact, he has no doubt that if anyone found out he’s gay, he’d be dead. He doesn’t want to let that wall down for Louis. Because no one can know. But that’s easier said than done. Louis is everything Harry could have ever pictured.
💎 Cowboy Like Me by Rearviewdreamer / @all-these-larrythings (M, 29k)
Going legit and starting over in a small town was supposed to solve all of Harry’s problems. That was until a string of robberies in wealthy towns brings him face-to-face with his rouge ex-partner and their dicey, unresolved past.
💎 Tonight's the Night by @jaerie (E, 24k)
Tonight’s the night. The night Harry has been waiting for. Everything has been carefully planned, nothing left to chance, the scene set and waiting for their arrival. It’s time.
Harry lives a double life. During the day he's Harry- trusty blood spatter analyst, at night his darkness comes out to play. So far he's been able to act his way through a normal life without drawing attention. What happens when that is no longer the case?
Or a Dexter AU where Harry is Dexter, Liam is Doakes, Niall is Masuka and Gemma is Deb.
💎 Harry, That Kills People by LadyLondonderry / @londonfoginacup (T, 2k)
If there’s one thing that Harry hates, it’s getting his clothes dirty.
If there’s one other thing that Harry hates, it’s murder.
Unfortunately, right here and right now, Harry’s clothes are dirty, and he’s murdered someone. So. It’s not a great day.
“Ugh,” says Harry. “Yeargh. Bleh.”

Proof of Life (8/8)
Click. The sound like a dream remembered.
She wakes slowly, comfortable, weighed down, impossibly warm. She cracks an eye and sees the round black lens of the ancient Nikon slowly lower, replaced by Mulder’s gentle smile.
“The light is perfect,” he husks quietly, his look tender but rumpled. He’s standing off to the side of the bed in a ratty tee shirt and faded flannel pants, his hair askew, a few days worth of growth on his chin.
Scully tilts her head toward the other side of her pillow. In a tangle of sheets and bedding, Emily’s hair is an apricot tumble of frayed rope on the pillowcase, her face shoved into the mattress, blissful in slumber. Tucked under Scully’s arm, William breathes snuffily, his damp hand wrapped around Moo’s careworn leg. His still-diapered tush is rounded into Scully’s side, bubble gum toes pressed to her thigh. He smells like sawdust and sweetness.
“I can’t believe you let them watch Return to Oz,” she murmurs. “We won’t have the bed to ourselves for a week.”
Mulder approaches softly, bends to push a pliant kiss to her lips. Then another.
“They loved the first one,” he whispers. “It was a parental miscalculation.”
She’s not certain that’s entirely true. Mulder loves having the whole family in the same bed, even if you can’t roll over without someone’s elbow jamming into your spleen. She suspects it’s a psychic holdover from past traumatic experiences.
She gives him an eyebrow, preparing to let it go with grace, but he grins at her. He knew what he was doing. Oh, she thinks. The things she could do to that mouth. Not all of them pleasant.
“You want coffee?” he whispers.
Scully hums an affirmative. The promise of caffeine and all is forgiven.
He pads out of the room with his camera still around his neck. Scully’s eyes drift from his backside to the furniture near their bedroom door.
On the dresser is a cluster of framed pictures that Mulder took; Scully, in her Doctors Without Borders years, clutching a cup of coffee under the flap of a dew-damp tent; Langly and Asuka in front of a pink spray of cherry blossoms; Margaret Scully and Matthew with their toes in the Chesapeake. Mulder’s first National Geographic cover stands sentry behind them—a sun-wreathed lioness with a sleepy spotted cub in her tender mouth. And above them all, on the wall in a double-matted frame, is a black and white picture of Scully peering out the window of 1055, a narrow arrow of light across her eyes, her nude shoulder in shadow. Next to the picture is the Pulitzer certificate that the photograph won.
Mulder comes back into the room pulling the smell of freshly brewed coffee with him. He sets her mug on her bedside table, crouching beside it.
“You want me to move ‘em?” He tilts his chin toward his children, the crows feet next to his eyes crinkled with paternal affection.
Scully shakes her head, giving him a soft wedge of a smile. Her sister is taking all the kids to the National Zoo later to see the pandas and she’d like to let them sleep.
Mulder, his chocolate hair still a mess, beams at her and raises his camera.
Halfway across the world, an engineer flips a switch, triggering a remote detonator. An old hotel, stripped bare, implodes, each floor collapsing in on itself until it is reduced to a city block’s worth of rubble. In the dusty air where it used to stand, about ten floors up, there still exists a square of space where two strangers were thrust together. Where they became, to each other: proof of life.

Rewatching Pom Poko hits too hard now, from the lens of it potentially being an allegory for activism.
The movie depicts various stages and intensity of people who try to incite change. You see people who meticulously plan and dedicate their time to a peaceful and beurocratic fashion. You see the opposite extreme of people who only want to take direct action until the perceived opposition is completely wiped out, no matter the cost or consequences. You see young hearts who only want what's best acting with naivete or carelessness.
You see Shokichi consider which path is correct, and weigh which option is best for everyone. Do humans deserve to be wiped out just because they're destroying everything the tanuki need to live? They've coexisted with humans before no problem, so why can't they just get back to that?
You see how when people perceive even a moticum of success, the celebrate and play like their work is finished, even though they've only made a pebble's worth of difference. You see how people can't stop their lives even for the greater good--we still need to have cubs, we still need to find ways to feed ourselves. Sometimes your activism needs to be put on hold for the winter; you're just too busy keeping your kids fed.
There are cautionary tales of the direct action group losing their lives in protest. The imagery of that loss is constant. You see the tanuki radically change their way of living seemingly overnight to adapt to the real world, because despite their best efforts and all the work they put in, they were never going to get their forest back, and their temple was going to be taken down.
And in the end with half the raccoons turning into people and upholding the status quo, it almost feels like they lost. They never got their hills back. They never could regain the world they lost. Yet at the same time, it showed the truth of the change activism incites: very tiny, incremental changes that sometimes occur too late for those who fought for it to take advantage. It's not enough, but it is BETTER than what you would've had without action.
Rewatching Pom Poko justs hits too hard as an allegory for activism.

Still the beginning of the Icebrood Saga was so rife with potential for me. I don’t personally see it as a tale of uniquely shitty parenthood, per se. rather it opens the gate for a potentially poignant exploration of familial structures or lineage in Norn and Charr culture and the ways those structures are built can result in sorrow for all parties involved. Icebrood Saga is a tragedy at the end of the day. Most people understand this about Rytlock having to kill his own son. The Norn emphasis on creating a legend and the carrying on of your parents’ legacy more directly in your surname - Braham, son of Eir, is Braham Eirsson. Charr don’t have surnames inherited from their parents. Their culture is much less dependent on nuclear family - charr parents are more hands off, and give their children up to the warband structure instead, where they are raised in groups with their peers by unrelated mentor figures instead. Charr have a broader community mindedness that Crecia is a reflection of, whereas Rytlock funnily enough reflects more the human values of individual attachment > community. In the story section where you are chasing Ryland with his parents through the storm and are intercepted by a huge ice elemental heading toward the valley, and Rytlock wants to just ignore it and blaze ahead out of concern for his adult son, and Crecia is adamant that it’s your responsibility to stop and take it down before it can proceed to harm everyone else’s cubs, even if it means risking her personal chase. Crecia’s last words to Ryland are incredibly harsh, but it isn’t like she’s unprovoked saying this to an innocent adult minor - this is coming off the back of him selfishly aligning with “charr are the one pure race” extremists & contributing to the deaths of an untold number of innocents. Charr also just kind of…talk like that, which doesn’t make it less violent, but also doesn’t make it as proportionally jarring a statement as it would if like humans were saying that stuff to each other. In her mind she should’ve killed him to prevent the loss of all those lives. But yes, also, young charr are taken from their parents and raised for war. I don’t see the issue as being they lack nuclear family – you see in Steel Warband how loving these familial structures can be. But this also leads to potentially abusive upbringings in the name of toughening kids up, which Ryland was a part of. I don’t even really care for the execution of all of this as is in game past a certain early stage of it, for the record. But you have Rytlock’s Sohothin, and you have Ryland’s flamesaw, a “Charr-made Sohothin”, which you can see both as an attempt to emulate and / or through the lens that he FORGED this himself with his own hands as he did with his name rather than having a relic of human power handed to him, something he’d disdain. And then you have Eir’s bow, which Braham inherited from his mom, as Braham with his name…and which Ryland steals from Braham after an evening of lowering his guard by relating to him. I really would’ve liked to see more about Braham’s dynamic with Ryland, considering they end up grappling each other for fifteen minutes on a field while 50 or so players bombard them with turtles at some crucial point of the story. But I digress. That’s not even touching on Norn and t

He pulls his trusty instant camera from his chest pocket and checks it over for any scratches on the lens or lingering dust before sighing and emotionally preparing himself for the most annoying part of his job. Not because he hates it, he’s actually quite the fan of photography, but because if he misses an important angle now he might not have important information later, which is perfect fuel for being mad at himself. He works on autopilot, hard won muscle memory from almost a decade of work, and tries his very best to ignore Cub’s stare burning into his back. Hypno tunes back into what xB is doing just in time to hear metal slam against wood as he attempts to open an apparently locked drawer.

The Lion King (1994)
Tumblr media
The Lion King is an animated Disney film released in 1994, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. It tells the epic coming-of-age story of Simba, a young lion cub destined to become king of the Pride Lands, a vast African savanna. The film is set against the backdrop of a lush and vibrant landscape, rich with African-inspired imagery and culture.
In what ways does the film’s score situate the story with its narrative context?
Hans Zimmer's score for The Lion King plays a crucial role in situating the story within its narrative context. The use of African-inspired instrumentation, such as drums, flutes, and vocal chants, evokes the landscapes and cultures of the African savanna, where the story is set. This musical backdrop helps immerse the audience in the world of the film, enhancing the emotional impact of key moments and reinforcing the themes of family, identity, and the circle of life.
The presence of African languages, particularly Swahili and Zulu, plays a significant role in situating the context of the film within the African setting. Swahili, a widely spoken language in East Africa, including countries like Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, serves as a linguistic element that enhances the authenticity and cultural richness of the narrative. Zulu, a South Africna language, is present in the beginning of the classic song, "Circle of Life," provided by Lebo M., a South African composer.
youtube
2. How do songs use character performance to push cultural authenticity in the film's diegisis?
The songs in The Lion King not only advance the plot but also serve to deepen the film's cultural authenticity through character performance. For example, the character of Rafiki, voiced by Robert Guillaume, performs the song "Circle of Life" in a manner that draws from African musical traditions. Rafiki's energetic and spiritual rendition of the song reflects his role as a wise and mystical shaman within the Pride Lands, adding layers of cultural richness to the film's diegesis.
Tumblr media
It's important to recognize the potential for misrepresentation, appropriation, and perpetuation of stereotypes. Robin Armstrong's exploration of musical colonization and appropriation in films like "Moana" provides a framework for understanding how colonialist perspectives can manifest in the portrayal of culture and identity in cinema.
One of the primary concerns with the colonialist lens is the tendency to exoticize or essentialize cultures that are depicted in film. In the case of The Lion King, while the film draws inspiration from African landscapes and cultures, there is a risk of reducing these diverse and complex traditions into simplistic or stereotypical portrayals. This can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and reinforce Western perspectives of Africa as a monolithic entity, rather than recognizing its diversity and richness.
Moreover, the colonialist lens may lead to the appropriation of cultural elements without proper understanding or respect for their significance. While the film's score and visual aesthetics draw from African musical traditions and imagery, there is a danger of these elements being co-opted for the purpose of entertainment without meaningful engagement with the cultures from which they originate.
3. In what ways does the film use musical “framing” to structure the score within familiarized styles?
The Lion King utilizes musical framing to structure its score within familiarized styles while incorporating African influences, creating a blend of familiarity and exoticism that appeals to a broad audience. This approach allows the film to maintain accessibility while still immersing viewers in the African setting and cultural context. Robin Armstrong's exploration of musical colonization and appropriation in films like "Moana" provides a lens through which to analyze how this framing functions within The Lion King.
One way in which the film employs musical framing is through the use of Broadway-inspired arrangements and melodies. Many of the songs in The Lion King, such as "I Just Can't Wait to Be King" and "Be Prepared," feature catchy tunes, dynamic orchestrations, and theatrical vocal performances characteristic of Broadway musicals. This familiarized style helps to engage viewers and draw them into the narrative, creating a sense of excitement and emotional resonance.

Part 1 (you are here!) | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4
“He’s been really into… rare grasses. Recently,” Scar sighed fondly, “I don’t know what’s gotten him into it, but he’s been trying to find this specific kind of grass for the last few months. Some kind of– I think– like, tall grass,”
Pearl looked at him, perplexed. “Tall… grass.”
“Tall grass.” He glanced over to Grian, who was squatting over a patch of particularly-interesting moss, his round glasses slipping dangerously low towards the tip of his nose. “I don’t really get it, but he’s excited about it so I’m excited too.”
Grian glanced up, sitting back on his heels. He pushed up his glasses, ignoring the single cracked lens from a run-in with a pillager group a few days before. He held up a stone covered in little clovers and a squat patch of moss. “Grass!”
Scar shot him a thumbs-up and a grin, throwing an arm around Pearl, his armor clanking against hers. “Grass! You got it, buddy!”
“What’s this about grass? Has he found it?” Impulse called, returning to their rendezvous point from the nearby village, arms laden bags of bread and other supplies. One hand loosely gripped the reigns of his horse as he spun, coming to a neat stop with a dramatic flick of his hair. His horse mimicked the motion, tossing his head with a smug look in his eyes.
Scar rolled his eyes at the theatrics. “I was just telling our dear friend here about Grian’s valiant mission! He will vanquish his enemies with the powers of– uh – Tall grass! I think!”
“Well, until then, I got us supplies for when we leave. Should be enough to last until we get to Cub’s place to restock.” Scar held a hand up and Impulse slid a couple of the bags onto his free hand.
“Ooh, great!” Pearl eyed Impulse’s horse warily as it stepped closer, examining her hair with a ravenous sniff, “What’s this mission about, anyways? No one’s filled me in yet.”
“Oh, we’re meeting one of Cub’s associates, I think. Something about an old mage and getting a team together? I’m not really sure, you know how Cub is. Or, you’ll meet him at least! He’s an old friend, been around for a few seasons when we’ve needed him. He’ll be excited too, it’s been a while since the Order has gotten any new knights. Right, Scar?”
“Hmm?”
“Cubfan? Your dear friend? The mission?”
“Oh, yes, that! Very important.”
“When I check that bag, are there going to be all of the groceries I put in there earlier?”
“... I don’t like that question.”
“Neither do I, to  be honest– I– ok. Impulse, can you get your horse off me, please?” The horse had his entire snout buried in Pearl’s hair, chasing the smell of her soap while sniffing incredibly loudly.
“Oh! Ed! Get off ‘er!” He tugged on the reigns and Ed reluctantly turned, swiveling back to look at Impulse with pleading eyes. “No! We don’t eat people’s hair, remember? We eat apples. Apples, Ed. You like apples,” Ed did his best imitation of a horse-frown, “Ed. We are not eating Pearl’s hair. Here, Scar! Toss me one of those apples, yeah? Here. Apple.” Ed snuffled again, slowly engulfing Impulse’s entire gauntlet and offered apple in his mouth before retrieving the fruit.
“How much do you think he’s getting from you talking to him?” Pearl unwrapped her hair, brushing her fingers through it.
“Hmm?”
“Like, does he speak English? Or, understand English?”
“I have no idea.” Impulse stared into his horse’s deep brown eyes with a focus that would intimidate anyone but Mr. Ed. Mr. Ed blinked slowly before leaning forward, sniffing at Impulse’s long hair.
“... Ok.”
“Horses aside, how far are we from this place?” Scar interjected.
“2 days, maybe? We’re meeting at the usual spot, the one in the mountains. Goal is to get there before the next blizzard hits, so we have time to plan,”
“... We’re going to need more apples.”

Happy Caturday! The newest #lion Superstar of the safari world has made an appearance at @singita_ Lebombo Lodge in the #krugernationalpark #repost from #wildographer & @singita_ super guide @rudihulshof “Born in the Shishangaan Pride of #lions, the new #whitelion is one of only 4 wild white lions that roam the African soils today. Speculation is rife as to who the fathers may be, but truth be told, this is something that could only be confirmed by DNA. For months the females of the pride have mated with; The two Trichard Males, 3 of the Satara Males, the Maputo Male and possibly even Shish Males. Yes they have been accepted by the 2 Trichard males, but there is no reason any of the remaining males would not do the same, all believing they are, (and having the same chance of being) the Father. 50% of Lion cubs do not reach a year old, and increases to 80% that cannot survive up to two years old. To continue the legacy of: known #white recessive gene carrying lions, we all hope this cub is going to be one of the 20% that could reach adulthood. Quick growth and easy food for the next couple months is a virtual guarantee as we move into Impala lambing season, and the female can provide regular meals to the developing cubs.
