I Promise
Requested by @la-vide Pairing: Alexei x Reader Rating: T+ Warnings: Many a cliche, overused tropes but I don’t care, tooth rotting fluff, wee bit of angst if you squint Words: 4,157 Summary: You were sick. It wasn’t anything new to you, really. You had known for a long time. But there was someone who always stuck by your side, no matter what. And you were falling hard.  Masterlist
You were sick. It wasn’t anything new to you, really. You had known for a long time. You knew there was something wrong, but you never knew what. Sure, you had done some research to try and piece together the symptoms, but you hadn’t come to a definite conclusion. Most people thought it was all in your head, including the majority of the doctors.
Being tired isn’t an illness, Y/N. It’s all in your head. Forget about it, and it’ll go away.
Their disbelief had almost drove you to insanity, making you question if they were right. It was a possibility, wasn’t it? You could just be imagining it all. Besides, everyone gets tired…right?
But through all their cynicism, there was one person that stood with you through it all.
Alexei.
He was your best friend, your rock, your confidante, and your first love.
At first, you were surprised to have his support. And you questioned him about it.
He sat across from you in your apartment, his brown curls looking a little windblown from the walk over. His glasses set on the bridge of his nose and he pushed them up slightly, cocking his head and looking at your curiously.
“What did the doctors say?” His English had greatly improved over the few years he spent in the US, learning from everywhere he could, including you.
You laughed mirthlessly, shaking your head. “The same thing they always do. That there’s nothing wrong with me.”
He frowned at you; his concern evident. “What do you think?”
A hand ran through your hair and you let out a huff. “Honestly, Alexei? I don’t know anymore. Maybe they’re right…maybe it is all just in my head. That would be so much easier to explain to people.
Alexei shook his head, moving from his place on the chair to the ground in front of you, kneeling at your feet and grabbing your hands in his. “No, lyubit’. It’s not in your head. If you think something is wrong, then something is wrong. They just haven’t found it yet.”
Your e/c eyes widened in surprise. You thought you translated the word properly, but the translation wasn’t what surprised you. Though him calling you love was an interesting turn of events. “You actually believe me?” you asked incredulously.
He gave you a pointed look, his grip on your hands tightening slightly. “Of course I do, Y/N,”
It too you a second to get over the intensity that he said your name, the Russian accent of his voice sending a chill down your spine. Then you refocused on what he was saying.
“-for a reason. And if it means putting my research on hold to find it, I promise you I’ll find the reason.”
“Alexei-”
His features hardened. “No. No arguments.” he said with a shake of his head. “If no one else will help you, then I will.”
You almost broke down then. Seeing the intensity of his determination to help you sent your heart soaring. He believed you. He was the first person who didn’t try to tell you that you were crazy. Instead, he did the exact opposite, telling you that he knew there was something wrong. And that he was going to help you figure it out.
The corner of his mouth quirked up in a smile, seeing how happy that made you.
And then you lost it.
You grabbed his shoulder and pulled him into a tight hug, your emotions spilling over. Tears made trails down your cheeks and fell onto his shirt as you clung to him, squeezing your eyes shut. “Thank you,” you said quietly, burying your face in the crook of his neck. As soon as you had pulled him into the embrace, his arms had instinctively went around you, holding you close to his strong chest.
Relief flooded your system. Someone believed you. Someone was going to help you. You weren’t crazy.
After a few moments, you managed to collect yourself, pulling back and wiping the stray tears from under your eyes. Alexei grinned at you, using his thumb to wipe away the remaining wetness. “I promise, Lyubit’. I’ll do everything I can to help you.”
You smiled at him, feeling exhaustion creep into your bones once again. You almost groaned. Not again, you thought. Especially not now…
He noticed the sudden change and gave you a concerned look. “Y/N?” he asked.
“I’m fine…” you muttered, closing your eyes and waiting for it to pass. When you realized it wouldn’t, you had to struggle to open your eyes.
“No, you’re not.” he insisted.
You almost laughed at him. “I know.” you settled for instead.
He released you and stood up, holding out his hand for you to take. You did, trying to use every ounce of strength you had to pull yourself up. But you couldn’t do it. “I can’t, Alexei.” you said quietly, darkness flooding the corners of your vision.
Your eyes were beginning to close as you felt his arms encircle you once again. You let out a quiet hum of contentment and put your arms around his neck before allowing the darkness to take over.
He stood there, looking at you as he cradled you in his arm, holding you bridal style. A small smile took over his face and he shook his head, walking back to your bedroom. He gently laid you on the mattress, covering your body with the light blanket you used during the summer. He leaned down, pressing his lips against your head.
“I promise I won’t give up on you, Y/N.”
So naturally, he was the one that had discovered the cause of your symptoms. True to his word, he had abandoned his research to help you. His bosses weren’t all that pleased, but Alexei knew they couldn’t do without him, so they let him take some time off. He had done so much studying on your symptoms until he came across a few possible solutions.
And he was the one that had arranged this little visit.
You sat in the doctor’s office, three states away from your hometown, your hand tightly clasping his. Doctors had always made you nervous, and this wasn’t any different. He grinned at you, allowing you to hold his hand as tightly as you wanted.
“It will be okay, Lyubit’.” he said. Your leg stopped bouncing nervously at the sound of his voice and you took a deep breath.
“Okay…” you said.
“Miss Y/L/N?”
You looked up at your name being called, taking another breath before grabbing your purse and pulling Alexei along. He followed willingly, knowing you needed support for this. Your parents were even further away, across the country in New York. So you had asked him to be there with you. And there was no way he could tell you no.
Once led to the exam room, your vitals were taken, and you were told the doctor would be in soon. The nurse wrote down a basic list of your symptoms and nodded along. Soon after she left though, there was a knock on the door.
You leaned into Alexei a bit as the doctor walked in, white lab coat and all. “Hi, Y/N. I’m Doctor Leonard.”
“Nice to meet you,” you said softly.
He smiled. “The pleasure is mine. So what are you here for today?”
You took another deep breath before answering. “I’m tired…” you said. That was the simplest way to explain it. “All the time. I fall asleep whenever and wherever my body wants to. Walking up the stairs to my apartment, talking to my mom on the phone, five minute car rides, things like that. If I laugh, I can’t walk. If I cry, I can’t stand. If something scares me, I can’t lift my arms.”
He began writing things down, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he listened to you.
“I can’t always sleep at night, which is weird. I have night terrors, and I’ll wake up screaming.”
Alexei’s grip on your hand tightened slightly and he looked over at you in surprise. Oops. You forgot to tell him that.
Doctor Leonard paused, looking up at you. “How long has this been happening?”
You sighed, running a hand through your h/c hair. “Almost two years? I think…”
He raised an eyebrow. “Have you seen any other doctors about this?”
“Several. But everyone thinks I’m crazy, that my symptoms are all in my head.”
He sighed. “Sadly, that’s the way a lot of disorders are viewed. Do you know what Narcolepsy is, Y/N?”
You nodded slowly. “Alexei told me a bit about it. He said it’s a sleep disorder that fits a lot of my symptoms.”
Doctor Leonard nodded. “He would be right. In fact, it fits most of them. I would like to have you do a sleep study, if you don’t mind. That way we know for sure what the problem is.”
“What is that?”
“We’ll keep you here overnight. You’ll be on a monitor so that we can see what your brain does while you sleep. You can have your own clothes, pillow, blanket, whatever you need.”
You chewed on your lip, glancing over at Alexei. It sounded like you had come to the right place. Slowly, you nodded. “Okay. When?”
“Since you’ve been dealing with this for quite a while, we’d like to do it as soon as possible. Can you come in tomorrow night?”
After he explained in detail what the test was going to involve, you felt much better. Alexei was grinning ear to ear as you walked out of the clinic, your hand in his as you walked to his car. “Well, someone’s happy.” you commented.
He looked over to you with one of the biggest smiles you had ever seen him wear. “I told you, Lyubit’. It wasn’t all in your head.”
You nodded, rolling your eyes as you knocked your shoulder into his. “Yeah, I know.”
He chuckled and opened the passenger door for you before walking around to the driver’s side. “What do you want for dinner?” he asked. “The hotel isn’t far from the market.”
You shrugged your shoulders as you leaned against the door, feeling the familiar exhaustion setting in again. “You pick.” you mumbled.
He paused after starting the vehicle, looking over at you fondly. “Okay.” he said softly.
His soft reply was the last thing you heard before being suddenly jolted awake by the slam of a door and a string of angry Russian. Your eyes snapped open and you looked over to Alexei, wondering what was going on. His normally soft features were set into a scowl as he muttered to himself in his mother tongue, most of which were curses.
“Wassa matter?” you slurred, still not fully awake.
Alexei turned his attention to you, the frustration and anger immediately melting from his face. “Nothing important, Y/N.” he said quietly, brushing a piece of hair out of your face. It had stuck to your forehead while you had been sleeping. You felt a shiver run down your spine at his touch, but he just smiled softly at you. “Just something the hotel messed up on.”
You rubbed your eyes after a moment, trying to wake yourself back up. “What happened?”
He sighed and just about dropped his forehead onto the steering wheel in front of him. “They only booked one room when I asked for two.”
A halfhearted shrug managed to lift your shoulders slightly. “So? I don’t mind sharing.”
He mumbled something else, something about you being such a decent person, but you weren’t sure you caught it all. Your brain was already muddled as it was, and your second language skills were a bit lacking.
“Do you think you can walk in? Or do you want me to carry you?”
You rolled your eyes, stretching slightly and feeling your back pop from being in the same position for about an hour. “I can walk.”
He nodded and moved the car from under the awning to the open parking spot close to the door. He got out and you followed suit, albeit a little unsteadily. You gripped the car to keep your balance as you felt your muscles begin to weaken. You cursed under your breath as your grip got a little looser, and you almost fell back into the car.
Alexei noticed and gently gripped your arm for support, his eyebrows furrowed and his glasses almost at the tip of his nose. You let out a quiet giggle at his expression, pushing his glasses up for him. Though even lifting your arm was getting to be a challenge.
He chuckled and bent down.
“Alexei, no, don’t you do i- AAH!”
You let out a yelp as he scooped you up, your arms immediately going around his neck. You gave him a glare, though by the playful expression on his face, you knew he wasn’t going to take you seriously. So you settled for a gentle smack to the back of his head, more of affection than anything else. He grinned triumphantly as he walked to the hotel, straight to the elevator.
You briefly wondered how often this had happened without your knowledge, and how he was able to hold you for so long. You knew he was rather buff for a scientist, but you never realized just how strong he was.
He made his way to the room with little to no effort, holding you carefully and without complaint. When he got to the door, you took the key card from the pocket of his shirt, sticking it in the lock. He hummed at you as he opened the door.
“Okay, you can put me down now, sir.” you teased.
Alexei chuckled and obliged, setting you on your feet and making sure you were steady enough to stand on your own. When he was satisfied, he nodded. “I’ll get the bags. Get comfortable, Lyubit’.”
You returned the nod and watched as he left. A quiet sigh escaped your lips and you made your way to the bed, laughing to yourself as you realized it was only one bed. You spread out comfortably on one side, letting out a huff as you did.
Everything that Alexei was doing only proved to fuel your love for the man, seeing his deep care and concern for his friends. He was so determined to help you, so determined to prove to you that you weren’t crazy. And the lengths he had gone to in order to do so were mind boggling. It sent your head spinning just thinking about it.
With a sigh, you drifted back off to sleep.
After dinner, you walked back into the hotel room with Alexei trailing behind you happily. Surprisingly, you hadn’t felt the exhaustion since your nap that afternoon. You were happy because for once, you got to spend time with your best friend without having to worry about him taking care of you.
You turned around, laughing at something he had said. And when your eyes landed on his, you stopped, a frown taking over. “Alexei?” you asked. “What’s wrong.”
He took a step towards you, invading your space. You took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of his cologne. It drove you to madness most of the time, but you weren’t in a complaining mood. Especially with the way he was looking at you.
“Nothing, Lyubit’…” he said, raising his hand to your face. His thumb gently stroked your cheek. “You’re just…so beautiful.”
Your cheeks flushed at what he said. “I think you had a few too many drinks, Alex.” you teased, trying to play it off.
He shook his head. “I haven’t ever had a clearer thought.” His eyes searched your face. “All I think about is you.”
And with that, he leaned down and closed the distance between you, capturing your lips with his in a gentle kiss. You were surprised at first. This was Alexei. Your best friend. The man that had done so much for you, his friend. And here you were, letting him toss that notion out the window.
You dropped your purse, leaving it forgotten on the floor as your hands tangled in his hair, running through the smooth brown curls as his arms wrapped around your waist. The kiss was everything you thought it would be and more. He was gentle while at the same time holding you like his life depended on it. His lips were soft against yours, asking permission and taking all at the same time. And it was amazing.
You gasped when you felt his tongue skim your bottom lip, asking permission to deepen the kiss. You allowed it, opening your mouth for him and angling your head to give him better access. Your tongues melded together, both fighting for dominance and exploring. You let out a quiet moan as his hands began to roam under your t-shirt. His fingertips brushed the skin above the waistband of your pants, and you used the grip on his hair to tug his head back slightly, making him growl quietly.
Alexei pulled back slightly, pressing his lips to the corner of your mouth before making his way to your jaw, kissing all the way up to the hollow under your ear. His hands were lost under your shirt, exploring the skin there. Pulling back to help him, you jerked the shirt up and over your head, going to work on the buttons of his grey one. Your lips met once again, tasting each other as you worked.
He leaned down, grasping your thighs and hoisting you up. Instinctively, your legs wrapped around his waist as you pushed the shirt from his shoulders. Your hands skimmed over his shoulders, memorizing every inch of skin that was exposed to you. He pulled your h/c hair out of the ponytail you wore it in, taking the opportunity to attach his lips to your neck instead. You weren’t ashamed of the moan that escaped as he bit down on your pulse point, eliciting a wave of pleasure to crash over you. He soothed the mark with his tongue, running gentle circles over the rapidly forming bruise.
Your legs tightened around him as he walked you backwards towards the bed. His fingers found the clasp of your bra and managed to pull them apart as he laid you down, crawling on the mattress above you. You raised your hips to meet his, grinding to create friction. Both of you let out a pleasure filled moan at the sensation, and he pulled back to stare down at you.
“My god, I love you…” he muttered. His voice was low and husky, the Russian words making it that much more sensual.
You were about to pull his head down again to mold your lips together when a loud bang cut through the air. You let out a scream and Alexei’s body spasmed above you. Pain took over his expression and he looked down, causing your eyes to follow. Next to the already healed scar of the previous wound was a new, larger, circular hole in his chest. Blood had spattered across your breasts and you let out another terrified scream as blood began leaking from his mouth. You grunted as his weight fell on you, unable to support himself any more.
“Traitors.”
You looked over at the sound of the new voice, seeing the other Russian standing over the bed, a twisted smile on his face as he raised the gun to your head.
You woke with another scream tearing from your throat, sitting bolt upright. Beside you, Alexei jolted and fell out of the bed.
“Y/N?!” he exclaimed, pulling himself back up beside you. Hearing his voice made you stop screaming and look over at him in a panic. Tears were streaming freely down your cheeks as you looked at him. Your eyes landed on the scar on his bare chest, which sent you into more panic. You weakly reached for him as his strong arms encircled you, rocking you back and forth gently. Your breaths came in shallow gasps as you tried to tell yourself that everything was okay.
“Calm down, love. It’s okay. It was just a nightmare.” he said. His Russian words were soothing as he did his best to calm you down. “You’re okay, Lyubit’. I promise. It’s okay.”
You shook your head, words robbed as you opened and closed your mouth, trying to get the words out. His lips met your forehead and you squeezed your eyes shut, holding onto him tighter.
“I need you to breathe, Y/N. Can you do that for me?”
You nodded rapidly, doing your best to follow his instructions.
“Listen to my heartbeat, Lyubit’. Follow my breathing.”
His words washed over you and you closed your eyes, trying to listen. His heartbeat was strong and steady, as opposed to your rapid and panicked one. But you followed along as he took a deep breath, letting it out slowly.
After a few moments of repeating that, the tears had finally stopped.
“I thought I lost you…” you said quietly, sniffling.
He pushed you back slowly and gently, his eyes searching yours. “I’m not going anywhere, Y/N. Ever.”
You shook your head. “It was…it was the man that shot you before…he…he shot you again…he killed you, Alexei!
“He sighed quietly and returned his hold on you, his lips once again pecking your head. “Does it look like I’m dead?” he joked. You managed a snort, the closest he was going to get to a humored response. “I’m here, Y/N. I always will be.”
You turned your head, burying your face in his chest and inhaling his scent. “Promise?” you choked.
“I promise, Lyubit’.”
You couldn’t resist the urge to press a kiss to the base of his throat, lingering a little longer than you should have. “Good…” You looked up at him, seeing him look down at you with concern. “Wait…what time is it?”
He glanced over at the clock, squinting a bit without the aid of his glasses. “Just after one.”
“…in the morning?”
“Yes.”
You sighed and pulled out of his arms. As soon as you did, you immediately missed the warmth he provided, but you shrugged it off. “Have you eaten?”
He shook his head.
“Why not?” you asked indignantly.
He chuckled. “I knew you would be hungry whenever you woke up. And I didn’t want you to eat alone.”
That sent you for another loop. He was always looking out for you, even in the smallest of ways. And at the moment, you couldn’t control what came out of your mouth. “I love you so much, Alexei. You know that?” As soon as the words were out, you resisted the urge to slap a hand over your mouth. Did you really just say that? What was he going to think? What was he going to do? Was he going to leave?
He put all your worries to rest when he chuckled, kissing your forehead again. “I know, Lyubit’. I know.”
You shook your head, now unable to stop the words from flowing. “No, you don’t Alexei.” you said. “I love you. I have for a long time. And I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I love you so much, and I can’t stand the thought of being without you in my life, even if it’s just as a friend. My night terrors? Every single one of them is about you being taken away from me. And I can’t handle it.”
Alexei was quiet for a moment, seeming to process the information. You waited with bated breath, wondering how he was going to react.
“You…love me?” he asked after a stretch of silence.
You nodded, tears in your eyes as you didn’t say anything.
He leaned forward and captured your lips with his gently. It surprised you to no end and it took you a moment to respond, kissing him back. Alexei leaned his forehead against yours when he pulled back, eyes closed and a peaceful expression on his face.
“I didn’t think you would ever feel the same…” he said quietly. Your eyes searched his expression as he continued. “I’ve always been afraid to tell you how I felt. I was worried I would lose you.”
You couldn’t help it. You laughed. And that surprised Alexei. He looked at you, a brief flicker of hurt crossing his face before he realized that you weren’t laughing at him. You were laughing at the situation you both found yourself in.
“So was I.” you said after pulling yourself back together.
He chuckled, wiping a stray tear from your face. “What now?”
You rolled your eyes. “Now we either go back to bed or we get something to eat. Because you were right…I’m starving.”
It was his turn to laugh, kissing you once again. “I love you, Y/N.”

BALLET / 2017-2018
MIXED REPERTOIRE
WORKING REHEARSAL
American Ballet Theatre
Kevin McKenzie, Artistic Director A Working Rehearsal with dances by Alexei Ratmansky, Jerome Robbins, Benjamin Millepied, and Christopher Wheeldon
“ABT isn’t just a company. It’s a collaboration. Dedicated, passionate people who come together to make sure that our commitment to the best in dance and movement is upheld, and available to all who seek it out.” –ABT.org
Since its launch in 1940, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) has aimed to present the best of ballet’s celebrated past (Robbins), to nurture the choreographers of the present (Ratmansky, Millepied, Wheeldon), and to nourish those of the future through its Educational programs (time will tell). At this working rehearsal, you’ll see four examples of ABT’s unwavering commitment to audiences.
To learn about ABT’s history, go to their site.
From past to present: Keep reading below to understand the influence Jerome Robbins has had on these younger choreographers.
SERENADE AFTER PLATO’S SYMPOSIUM
Choreography by Alexei Ratmansky (2016) Music by Leonard Bernstein
“This ballet is an abstract exploration of some of the themes that Plato investigated with his ‘Symposium.’ In Plato's original text, a group of men convene and deliver speeches on the topic of love, with each man bringing a unique perspective to the proceedings. They explore how love can help the soul to understand truth in the pursuit of wisdom and beauty.” –ABT.org
Did you know…Jerome Robbins joined ABT as a young dancer the year after the company was formed; Alexei Ratmansky (RAT-man-skee) is currently the company’s Artist-in-Residence.
Here’s a musical sample of Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade After Plato’s Symposium:

Now…about that music…and Leonard Bernstein: On August 8, 1954, the day after completing his score, composer Leonard Bernstein wrote the following description of its origin:
“There is no literal program for this Serenade, despite the fact that it resulted from a re-reading of Plato’s charming dialogue The Symposium. The music, like the dialogue, is a series of related statements in praise of love, and generally follows the Platonic form through the succession of speakers at the banquet. The ‘relatedness’ of the movements does not depend on common thematic material, but rather on a system whereby each movement evolves out of elements in the preceding one.”

OTHER DANCES
Choreography by Jerome Robbins (1976) Music by Frédéric Chopin
“Set to a waltz and four mazurkas by Frédéric Chopin, the plotless classical character pas de deux was created by Jerome Robbins…for a gala to benefit…the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center…on May 9, 1976. The piece was first performed by [ballet greats] Natalia Makarova and Mikhail Baryshnikov and staged for American Ballet Theatre by Isabelle Guérin.” –ABT.org

Time out for a moment to learn some essential facts about Jerome Robbins: The choreographer (1918–1998) created more than 60 ballets and numerous Broadway shows including On the Town, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Gypsy, and The King and I. He became a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1981.
To learn more about Robbins and his six-decade career, go to jeromerobbins.org.
Find out about Robbins’s Centennial Celebration.
And for 8:53 minutes of pure enjoyment…watch this scene set on the streets of New York City as the “Jets” and “Sharks” dance their way through West Side Story with choreography by Robbins and music by (none other than) Leonard Bernstein.

I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE
Choreography by Benjamin Millepied (2017) Music by Philip Glass (Einstein on the Beach: Act III Trial/Prison, Liquid Days: Part I, Changing Opinion) First Movement: “Tremor” Second Movement: “A Vision” Third Movement: “The Work Begins”
The stage is totally bare as unison movements, shapes, patterns, and lines converge in this dance that appears to be a precise and passionate statement about political unrest.
To learn more about Benjamin Millepied (MEEL-pee-yeh), go to his official site.

Admiration for Robbins doesn’t stop here. Hear Christopher Wheeldon reveal his desire to work with Jerome Robbins and how Robbins’s generosity drew great work from dancers.

And speaking of Christopher Wheeldon…up next…Thirteen Diversions.
THIRTEEN DIVERSIONS
Choreography by Christopher Wheeldon (2011) Music by Benjamin Britten (Diversions for Piano [left hand] and Orchestra, Op. 21) Movements include: Theme Variation I, Recitative Variation II, Romance Variation III, March Variation IV, Rubato Variation V, Chorale Variation VI, Nocturne Variation VII, Badinerie Variation VIII, Ritmico Variation IXa, Toccata I Variation IXb, Toccata II Variation X, Adagio Finale. Tarantella
“Geometries shift in refreshing ways to create Christopher Wheeldon's choreographic kaleidoscope of surprising images and spectacular contrasts. With four principal couples and 16 corps de ballet members, this is ballet on a grand scale.” –ABT.org
