Inaugurated on 9 August 1960, it was one of several projects nationwide that were intended to mark the Comemorações Henriquinas (the celebrations marking the anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator). Yet it was not completely finished until 10 October 1960, being transferred to the responsibility of the Administração Geral do Porto de Lisboa (General Administration of the Port of Lisbon).

Although in 1962, an accord was signed with the Câmara Municipal of Lisbon to transfer its title, between 1960 and 1979 nothing was done with the monument. A document (Despacho No.57/P/79) published in the municipal journal (No. 13260, 5 November 1979) advanced the city's intention to produce a permanent exhibition, but it was only in 1985 that public works completed the cultural centre (Portuguese: Centro Cultural das Descobertas) which inaugurated public access to the top of the structure, in addition to creating spaces for an observation deck, auditorium and hall for exhibitions.

In April 2003, the management of the Padrão dos Descobrimentos was placed in the custody of the public company Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural (EGEAC, E.E.M.).

Já estão disponíveis no site Sympla os ingressos gratuitos para o evento comemorativo do Bicentenário da Imigração Alemã no Brasil (1824 – 2024) que a Fundação Catarinense de Cultura (FCC), por meio da Comissão do Programa de Comemoração do Bicentenário da Imigração Alemã, promove no dia 23 de julho, às 19h30, no Teatro Ademir Rosa, em Florianópolis. Na ocasião, com a participação de autoridades e convidados, haverá as apresentações de grupos tradicionais da cultura germânica: banda Treml, de São Bento do Sul, Grupo Folclórico Alpino Germânico, de Pomerode, e Sünnros Volkstanzgruppe, de Jaraguá do Sul. 200 anos de Imigração Em 2024, celebram-se dois séculos da chegada da primeira leva representativa de imigrantes alemães em terras brasileiras. Ainda que a presença desse povo no Brasil seja registrada desde o século 16, somente em 1824 ocorreu a chegada do primeiro grupo representativo de alemães, onde hoje está situada a cidade de São Leopoldo, no Rio Grande do Sul. Nos anos seguintes, a história registra outras sucessivas vindas de imigrantes alemães ao país. Em 1828, quatro anos depois do primeiro desembarque em terras gaúchas, chegaram os primeiros imigrantes destinados diretamente ao solo catarinense. Eles se estabeleceram no ano seguinte, 1829, na região da atual cidade de São Pedro de Alcântara, na Grande Florianópolis. Até o século seguinte, no entanto, essa presença cresceu e ocupou outras regiões de Santa Catarina. Seus costumes, língua e cultura integram, hoje, a identidade catarinense, ao lado de outras etnias que ajudaram a povoar nosso estado. “Por isso, a fim de marcar a data, em maio de 2024 foi instituída uma Comissão que engloba diversas entidades, entre elas a FCC. No repertório da Treml estão canções tradicionais alemãs. Grupo Folclórico Alpino Germânico (foto) O Grupo Folclórico Alpino Germânico, da cidade de Pomerode, surgiu em 1968 e, ao longo das últimas décadas, vem inspirando o surgimento de diversas iniciativas folclóricas na região do Vale do Itajaí. Já realizou apresentações em diversos lugares do Brasil e do mundo, entre elas a Oktoberfest em Munique, na Alemanha, considerada a maior festa de chope do mundo. Sünnros Volkstanzgruppe O Grupo Folclórico Sünnros Volkstanzgruppe foi fundado em 1987 em Jaraguá do Sul. É composto em média por 80 dançarinos, divididos em quatro categorias: mirim (4 a 6 anos), infantil (7 a 9 anos), infantojuvenil (10 a 14 anos) e adulto (acima de 14 anos). Por meio da dança, o grupo, sujo nome significa “Flor do Sol (girassol)”, cultura a tradição germânica de seus membros. Coral Deutscher Chor Com o intuito de cultivar e perpetuar estas tradições, que em 17 de janeiro de 2018 alguns amigos descendentes se reuniram em Florianópolis e decidiram criar o Deutscher Chor Florianópolis, aspiração de longa data entre os fundadores que finalmente se materializou. O propósito é relembrar e reproduzir principalmente aquelas músicas folclóricas, populares, que ouvíamos dos nossos antepassados. Para dirigir o coral foi convidado o regente André da Silveira de Almeida e acompanhamento instrumental, o tecladista Diego Borges. A partir de 2020 passou a ser dirigido pelo regente Cristian Gonçalves. Em 2023, de março a maio foi dirigido pelo regente Fabiano Zoldan, e a partir de junho, pelo regente Luiz Eduardo Silva. The action in the Florianopolis Challenger singles quarterfinals continued with qualifier Daniel Cukierman, who advanced by defeating his fellow qualifier Mateo Barreiros Reyes 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in a rematch of their Sao Leopoldo Challenger first qualifying round encounter, and Gianluca Mager, who advanced after Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida retired at 6-4, 1-5 in the second round. The first set turned out to be competitive between both players, where those who remained stable and maintained their range (and maximized their chances) ended up to prevail in this match.

Cukierman tried to overcome a nervy start through saving 2 break points before his service game hold to 1-1. Several games later, Cukierman had to face another break point thanks to G. Mager's forehand winner, but he found his range in time to hold his serves to 2-2.

However, Cukierman's ability to maintain the bigger moments were tested in the last few games of the first set. While capitalizing on G. The Rossio station opened to the public in 1963, included in the construction of the 2nd phase of the 1st echelon of the network, which took place between 1959 and 1963, in architectural and artistic terms followed the global guidelines applied to this enterprise, the person responsible for the architectural project was Arq. º Falcão e Cunha and the author of the tile coating was the painter Maria Keil.

In artistic terms, the production of the coating passed through the use of the “dry rope” technique. The ancient techniques of azulejo had fallen by the wayside, because during part of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the Art of Azulejo had lost importance. It should be noted that, with this series of compositions for the stations of the Metropolitano, Maria Keil recovered many of these lost traditions, becoming the main driver of the resurgence of this Art. This season's lining is composed of a palette of blue and green tones that form the background where lines that form a base web are inscribed, achieved by increasing the insulating space of the “dry rope”. The web is sometimes interrupted by the inclusion of rosette motifs in groups of four tiles.

The network expansion plan in progress until 1999 includes the extension of the lines between Restauradores and Santa Apolónia and between Rossio and Cais do Sodré, eliminating the Rossio - Restauradores section, creating two independent lines with correspondence at the Baixa / Chiado double station. During the construction work of this station, archaeological finds of great interest for the city's cultural heritage were brought to light. Vestiges of the Roman city, the Moorish city and also of the buildings belonging to the Hospital of Todos-os-Santos, built by D. João II, which collapsed with the 1755 earthquake. This entire archaeological ensemble was duly studied by the Cultural Services of the Chamber Municipal of Lisbon, with the archaeological finds exposed in the Museum of the City. An important page in the History of Lisbon thus came to light thanks to the construction of the Metropolitano de Lisboa.

The refurbishment of the Rossio station was part of this project. The architectural project was designed by Arqº Leopoldo Rosa and the plastic intervention resulted from the joint work of the artists Artur Rosa and Helena Almeida.

The structure is located on the northern bank of the Tagus River, neighboring the Belém Marina, Algés and Dafundo Nautical Centre, and the Museum of Popular Art (Portuguese: Museu de Arte Popular), and demarcated by stone pedestals with armillary spheres. Opposite the large square, and across the Avenida da Índia-Avenida de Brasília motorway, is the Praça do Império (Empire Square) which fronts the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Cultural Center and the green-spaces of the Jardim Vasco da Gama.

The original structure, which Telmo, Barros and Almeida created, was erected in steel and cement, while the 33 statues were produced in a composite of plaster and tow. Ostensibly a 52-metre-high (171 ft) slab standing vertically along the bank of the Tagus, the design takes the form of the prow of a caravel (ship used in the early Portuguese exploration). On either side of the slab are ramps that join at the river's edge, with the figure of Henry the Navigator on its edge. On either side of the Infante, along the ramp, are 16 figures (33 in total) representing figures from the Portuguese Age of Discovery. These great people of the era included monarchs, explorers, cartographers, artists, scientists and missionaries. Each idealized figure is designed to show movement towards the front (the unknown sea), projecting a direct or indirect synthesis of their participation in the events after Henry.

The South African government was responsible for gifting the construction of the square in front of the monument: the 50-metre-diameter (160 ft) Rosa-dos-Ventos (compass rose) was executed using different types of limestone, including lioz, a rare type of beige limestone found only around Lisbon, more specifically in Sintra. Designed by the architect Cristino da Silva, it includes a Mappa mundi that is 14 metres wide, showing the routes of Portuguese carracks and caravels during the Age of Discovery.

On the northern façade flanking the staircase are two inscriptions in metal: on the left, "AO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE E AOS PORTVGVESES QVE DESCOBRIRAM OS CAMINHOS DO MAR" (To Prince Henry and the Portuguese that Discovered the Roads of the Sea) over a metal anchor; and, on the right, the words "NO V CENTENÁRIO DO INFANTE D. HENRIQVE 1460 – 1960" (On the Fifth centenary of Prince Henry 1460–1960), over a crown of laurel. The double staircase ascends one level, before the entranceway to the monument, allowing a perspective on the square and the lateral figures.

The interior consists of three areas: the auditorium with space for 101 people, a stage of 18 square metres (190 sq ft), with film projection booth; a secondary level with two halls for exhibition; and the last level with four rooms. Normally, the auditorium hosts a multimedia exhibition on the history of Lisbon, while the other rooms are used for exhibitions. The top of the monument (reached via a lift or stairs) offers views of the Tagus river, the Belém neighbourhood and its many attractions, including the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, which date from the Age of Discovery.

Helena Almeida (1934) is a Portuguese artist known for her work in photography, performance art, body art, painting and drawing.Almeida was born in Lisbon in 1934. She is the daughter of the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida (1898-1975). She married architect Artur Rosa. Their daughter Joana Rosa became an artist. After spending some years raising her family, in 1964 she obtained a scholarship and moved to Paris.
