#les misérables 1982

Another day, another adaptation: the 1982 French film, this round. The fact that every adaptation makes at least one lunatic choice really keeps my hyperfixation hyperfixating. Standout points:

This is the dirtiest Les Mis, and I don't mean because there's a nip slip. Streets, clothes, faces, interior walls of buildings: just about everything is dirty at best and caked in filth at worst.

Michel Bouquet's Javert has a parallel with Oyelowo's, which—shockingly—I don't mean as a critique (much): they are depicted as cleaning up their offices with the Paris police, Bouquet very literally (six months into his tenure, he drags his fingers across a painting in his office, streaking through thick dust; eight years later, he repeats the gesture, but this time to remove the barest fleck), and there's a definite career arc subplot for both. In BBC 2018 this is because the narrative thinks Javert is a badass; I'm less clear on what '82 is going for.

Lino Ventura has an interesting, craggy, wrinkly, mobile face, and he utilizes it thoroughly through Valjean's different iterations, from the slack and suffering convict to the dignity of Mayor Madeleine and somewhere in-between as Ultime Fauchelevent.

Award for most bombastic and cheerful Amis ever. The polycule energy is strong. Instead of OFPD, the entire line-up gets the firing squad treatment at once (bewildering and delightful, this sequence includes time pausing for everyone except Grantaire, who grabs a last drink and strolls over to the others, there to take his place for the final shot; someone gimme the fanfic in which he has time-based superpowers, please).

Instead of an intimate moment between her and Marius, Éponine's death includes the Amis standing in a semi-circle around the two of them. Marius proceeds not to grant her dying wish for a kiss. Awkward.

In a change which makes zero sense to me, Valjean survives an additional five years in this adaptation—but this ain't a fix-it fanfic. He severs ties with Cosette utterly the day of her wedding and lives in increasingly filthy solitude (this would not be '82 without filth). For extra pathos, in an irrelevant scene he's depicted collapsing in the street and being robbed. He dies alone, painfully, crying out for Cosette, having suffered a final vision of her and Marius frolicking down a lane (his horrified reaction to this, unlike everything else happening here, is certainly Brick-compliant). Catherine is present and possibly cursed?

Please, the final scene, dwell on it with me. It mirrors the first scene of the film: convicts in chains shuffle bare-footed through mud; one collapses; we see others labor to pull carts full of stone; Javert calls Valjean's name; we see Valjean pulling a cart alone;—in the first scene, Javert then says "You are free", but in the final, "Now you are free". Both are in their old-man wigs and makeup. We have been hit over the head with a point one can certainly derive from the novel, that Valjean's suffering ends only after death (or, in the case of '82, after a little purgatory). But! That it was all Toulon—awful. And that Javert is his final voice of salvation—weird, and AWFUL.

Interesting that '82 is so profoundly grim for Valjean despite clearly, from the Amis, having the capacity for cheerfulness. Not sure what to do with that!

Anyway, my favorite character in this adaptation is Combeferre's beard.

[eta] Forgot: there is the lead-up to the coffin heist and lead-up to Marius lobbing the "les cognes sont là" note into the room during the Gorbeau ambush, but the film does not actually include either of these events—I'd almost wonder if there's a missing scene somewhere for the former, but the latter is simply a dropped thread.

Saw the 1982 French adaptation of Les Misérables today. The parallel between the very first and very last scenes made me choke.

À Toulon ... (In Toulon...)

"Vous êtes libre." (You are free.)

"Maintenant, vous êtes libre." (Now, you are free.)

... dans les limbes. (...in limbo.)

So obviously it inspired me to draw another little something heavily based on that. I however chose to draw the characters the way I envision them (do note that the Valjean design will probably change, as I did not think it through too much yet!) instead of the actors themselves.

And honestly, it had been a while since the last time I was so productive in terms or drawing...!

I realized today when I was looking at some adaptations that there are actors who played both Bishop Myriel and Claude Frollo and this made me like hmmmmmm…

"Cedric Hardwicke" who played the serious Myriel in Les Misérables film (1935)

He later played Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame film (1939)

But the surprise for me was..

this baby girl Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame film (1982) played by "Derek Jacobi"

Is the same actor who played Myriel in Les Misérables BBC series (2018-2019)

Fairytales in French cinema

Pictures from "Elle voit des nains partout!", a 1982 adult comedy parodying fairytales - mainly Snow-White, Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs with a dash of Sleeping Beauty, alongside other pieces of French literature such as Les Misérables.

Number 15. Claire Moore

Claire Moore was cast as the alternate Christine Daaé in the original cast of The Phantom of the Opera. She played three shows each week. When Sarah Brightman left the production after a year, Claire took on the role full-time.

In 1989 she left the role to play Ellen in the original London production of Miss Saigon.

A while later Claire returned to the role of Christine, most famously with Ethan Freeman.

Claire and Ethan were voted "favourite Christine and Phantom" by the Phantom Appreciation Society. This win led to a contract at Jay Records for a highlights album featuring them both.

She was due to return to in September 2013, this time to play Carlotta Guidicelli, but her run was cancelled due to injury.

Claire's early work includes appearing alongside Richard Harris in the 1982 London production of Camelot and playing the lead role of Audrey in the 1983–85 Comedy Theatre production of Little Shop of Horrors.

From 2000 to 2001, Claire played Mrs Anna (as alternate for Elaine Paige) in the London Palladium production of The King and I. She has also starred as Fantine and Madame Thenardier in Les Misérables.

In the 2019 National Theatre production of Follies, she played former Follie girl Hattie Walker and sang one of the shows most popular songs, ‘Broadway Baby’.

What about if you did Live-Action movies? Though probably best not to do any very long or interconnected ones (like the MCU for example).

One of my choices would be Inspector Clouseau (played by Peter Sellers) from the Pink Panther films.

Here we go! (And you have no idea how happy it made me when you picked Sellers!Inspector Clouseau.)

I also don't know if you wanted regular movies or movie musical, both of which I can do. But it's just funny to me how half the cast would watch the musicals and be like, "How you guys breaking out into song and dance like that?! What, did you plan this?"

And the musical cast is like, "No?! I don't even remember doing that!"

(For those not in the know, musical numbers just help to progress the story and or be an entertainment piece for the audience, meaning they are non-diegetic, meaning that have no direct effect on the story world, like the soundtrack you hear during a movie.)

Once again I must face the fact that I apparently watch very little media and/or remember too few details of what I do watch.

David and Patrick (Schitt's Creek).

2. Henry (Red, White & Royal Blue). I like Alex too, but for the sake of the post, I'm making choices, and I choose quiet, sad piano player.

3. Rebecca (Ted Lasso). If she's on screen, I can't take my eyes off of her.

4. Paul (Shrinking). How fun it was to watch Harrison Ford in this.

5. Hmm. . . Barbie? Of Barbie. Honestly, I think driving to a parallel universe while singing "Closer to Fine" might fix me.

6. Annie? I rewatched Annie (1982) this year. Singing! Tap dancing! Such talent and longing! She deserves a big house and a dog. Although Miss Hannigan is relatable too. Tough choice.

7. Matilda, of Matilda (1996). I watched this for the first time a couple of weeks ago? Very cute, magic powers, likes books.

8. This is where I realize both that I can't count and that I have seen nothing else. But I saw Les Misérables on the stage. I love Éponine.

9. Oh wait, I saw The Lake and liked it, that's right. Justin is super cute. And kind of a disaster.
