I'm not intimidating. You might feel intimidated, but that's your insecurity speaking. Know the difference. 🖤 Don’t deny your insecurities, embrace them and talk about it.
If you are feeling intimidated, deal with it, but don’t try to make other people feel bad about themselves because you have issues. Being insecure is one thing, and we can talk about it and might help each other. Being an asshole, that’s it for me. I don’t befriend assholes.

My brutally honest review of...
Tumblr media
CBCS comic grading
I’ve used other comic book grading services like CGC in the past so I’m quite familiar with the ins and outs of comic book grading. When I went to Megacon this year, Rob Liefeld was one of the guests. Since I’ve had both New Mutants 87 and 98 for quite a while, I figured it would be a good chance to get at least one of them graded. I planned on getting them both signed and then graded but when I saw what Rob Liefeld charges for signatures, I had to limit it to just one book ($100 for one signature!) Since I’m not overly fond of throwing money away, I decided to go with New Mutants 98 since Deadpool is so insanely popular right now and that book was in better shape. I’ve had good experience with CGC and they are by far the most trusted, best known graders in the field of comic collecting so I figured I’d go back to them for my comic grading needs.
I thought wrong.
I was immediately informed that Rob Liefeld has an exclusive contract or agreement with CBCS. Meaning, if you want to get any book signed by Rob Liefeld and then graded, you will have to get it graded by CBCS. I hadn’t used them before but I had heard that they were cheaper than CGC and in many ways just as good. I will agree that they are much cheaper than CGC. Both of the books I got graded were only like $70 total. Two books graded by CGC were around $120 (although one was a silver age book) so CBCS does have the clear advantage at least in terms of the cost. CBCS seems to be a much better bargain for your money. I heard good things from other collectors in line so I figured they’d be just as good as CGC.
When filling out the forms and paperwork, I was told by CBCS staff that it would take around 4-8 weeks to get my graded books back. That seemed surprisingly fast considering I was seeing people drop off 25-50 books at one time. I figured since they are smaller than CGC, they’d have fewer submissions and they’d have a much faster turnaround. That was not the case. I dropped my books of on May 25th (2018) and I just got them back this Thursday (November 8th)... It took them almost six months to get my books back to me.
SIX FREAKING MONTHS!
I could understand if I had dropped off like 20 golden age books or I was getting something pressed or restored. But I only had two books that were each signed. That’s it. If they had told me it would take 4-6 months to get the books back to me, I would have known what to expect. I do not appreciate the fact they greatly exaggerated the speed of their grading. I think what they mean to say is it will take 4-8 weeks* (books will be received/placed in their vault in 4-8 weeks). Emphasis on the asterisk. They should really change their verbiage to reflect the actual time before you have your books in hand and just be honest about the fact it will be a while. I am not an impatient person, I understand services like this take time and must be graded by hand in the order they‘re received. But to tell me something will take eight weeks when it will really take six months is ridiculous and a tad dishonest.
During my long wait, I checked some forums to see if that was a common practice and from what other collectors have experienced, I got off easy. Other people said CBCS had their books for most of the year. When collectors contacted them asking for a status update, they were given short, often rude replies telling them to “be patient” or “it takes as long as it takes.” If you tell me it takes 4-8 weeks, I expect it will take 4-8 weeks plus or minus a few weeks. If it is actually going to take half a year, just tell me that so I know what to expect! During the entire process I got two updates; one in July telling me that the books had been received and were now in their vault, then another a week ago saying they were done and ready to ship. Two updates in six months isn’t great but I guess at least I got some kind of status report.
The other problem I encountered was their estimation of the books’ “fair market value.” When I got my books back from CGC in the past, all the books had a different, very specific fair market value assigned and they really seemed to take multiple factors into consideration. To my surprise, CBCS gave both of these recent books the exact same value. Surely an 8.0 copy of New Mutants 98 signed by Rob Liefeld is worth a different amount than Y The Last Man 1 signed by José Marzan Jr. They might not be much different, but I have to think they are both worth a different amount (FYI CBCS put the fair market value of both books at $250). Too many people think their comics are worth WAY more than they actually are. My problem isn’t that they were undervalued, they probably weren’t.
My problem is they seem to assign the same fair market value to books that have completely different values. Deadpool is about as popular as it gets right now with the movies and endless merch. So to state in writing that the first appearance of Deadpool has an identical value to a book that is virtually unknown outside the comic collector world seems inaccurate to me. I think they have a baseline FMV for certain books, from certain years in certain condition and aren’t considering other contributing factors. There are obviously going to be more graded copies of New Mutants 98 floating around than Y the Last Man so I would think the Y the Last Man should have a higher FMV since there are fewer of them that have been graded and it had a smaller print run. Their assigned fair market value seems like a rough ballpark that is somewhat arbitrarily determined. Now that Deadpool has blown up, his first appearance should be worth more and be more desirable than it would have been in 1991 when he debuted. FMV isn’t a rock bottom value, it’s a suggestion. Fair market value and an appraisal are not the same. A comic is worth what someone is willing to pay, the fair market value is often fair but not realistic. I’ve seen absurd fair market values suggested for mass-produced books like Spawn #1 as high as $80! 9.8 or not, that is a five-for-a-dollar-bin book and even grading shouldn’t increase it’s value by that much.
Tumblr media
I’ve also heard from collectors who are reselling their CBCS graded books that CBCS books don’t have as high a resell value as CGC books. I’ll be honest, when I’m in the market for a graded book, I usually won’t consider buying it if it has been graded by CBCS (even less for PGX). In my case, I literally had no choice as all New Mutants 98 signed by Rob Liefeld have to be graded by CBCS. I don’t like not having a choice as to which company grades my books. I understand that Rob Liefeld is exclusively partnered with CBCS, but that hurts collectors like myself who might sell the books in the future. CBCS isn’t nearly as desirable as CGC to collectors looking to buy a graded book. Not to mention their slabs seem a lot cheaper than those used by CGC. Their slab seems like flimsier plastic or like if you handled it wrong it might accidentally crack open.
On a positive note, the people working the CBCS submission booth at Megacon were very friendly and helpful. They seemed more knowledgeable and more helpful than anyone that assisted me at CGC. I’m not saying CBCS is by any means a bad company or anything like that. There wasn’t a line at their booth and they quickly got me checked out and set me up with a witness for my other book (Y The Last Man #1 signed by José Marzan Jr.) They got me checked out quickly and were really friendly people.
Tumblr media
Like anything, this is subjective and open to interpretation but from my experience, their expected return time is crazy unrealistic. If a mechanic tells me my car will be ready in two days and it ends up taking two months, that’s a problem and I will tend to think the mechanic either doesn’t know what he’s doing or doesn’t manage his time properly. I’m not irritated that it took six months, I’m irritated it took six months when they told me it’s take two. Just be honest. I would rather they over-estimate the time it will take, that way you know what to expect.
I guess at the end of the day, I did get my books back safely and CBCS is a lot cheaper than CGC. It just doesn’t seem like it should take half a year to grade two books, no matter how busy they are or how many other submissions they had. Two books signed and dropped off at the con should be finished about as soon as any. I understand these kinds of services take time; I just want to know what to expect, I think customers deserve that much.
If you use CBCS to grade your books, expect to wait much longer than the estimated 4-8 weeks. If you want your books back as fast as possible and want the highest possible resale value, I’d stick to CGC.
Just sayin.
