Our Time has Value

Why? Well, if no one told you that before, you have one life with a limited timeframe, and you don’t have to deal with bull***t.

So now I want to share the story that I hate, but you can learn something from that, especially if you’re new and you don’t know what to do, where to start, etc. Disclaimer: I was a teen in my 18s or something like that and naive, ofc. Don’t judge my previous self.

Well, here’s my story. I was a teenage girl, studying graphic design and striving to be the best designer ever (like that’s sooo easy), loving graphic design to the core. I was thrilled to create different projects for school, personal projects and just have the best fun while working on them. And then I heard that one friend has started to work on some contest websites, and started to win prizes on them. I was a student, and I didn’t really explore much, I saw that, and I want to do that too…Seems fun, right? But then, you start looking at these „contests“ and people who are submitting their design work, and you want to outperform them. The first couple of contests went good, I was making some quick stuff, and I won a prize on one or two of them. I was happy like a fool. Let’s do a couple more. 1,2,3…10 and nothing. Hours and hours spent on them. You’re just creating design work and getting nothing in return. Maybe a star or two, and then it hit me. I researched for the first time (don’t ask me why I didn’t do that earlier, I want to punch my previous self in the face for that). And then the breakdown happened. I worked for free, my work has been plagiarized, and the worst of all I was expecting that someone will pick me from the bunch of other designers. Long story short, I kinda went too dramatic and said that I would never work as a graphic designer again, I would aggressively reject everything with that „work for free“ bs they kept sending to me. And I changed my path because I was too furious to deal with it the right way.

And here I am now, making nonsense on IG and Tumblr (this is originally my post for James Lewis's movement on IG so that's why IG is here). 🙌 But that feels good, even though I’m rusty and I don’t make that „OMG WOW THAT’S SO AWESOME“ work. But it feels good to do what I love again, with no pressure or clients that want you to work for free/exposure/other Bulls**t. So yeah, my time has value, and yours too.

✅ Don’t make my mistakes, learn from them, deal with them and don’t run away. I was literally a kid who just wanted to make something, but I was at the wrong place. Don’t do that, fight for yourself and things that you really care for. Because if you don’t think that your time has value, no one else will.

❤ I like where I am now, older and wiser, working on projects and managing stuff, like an adult, but that designer in me never went. She still wants to create.

And now I remembered a random story about a grandpa (or grandma) who went to the store every day to buy groceries and instead of change, the cashier gave him a bubble gum. After a period of time, that grandpa went to that same store to buy groceries, and one day when the cashier asked him to pay for the groceries, he gave her back all of the bubble gums he has collected since then, in the exact amount that was needed. It’s not that relevant to this post, but I felt like sharing it.
