I meant to post this within the holiday timeframes, but unfortunately it was a crazy couple of weeks. So, belated, here is the progression of my most recent chalkboard.

The sound of running water entices you. You go east. After about thirty feet, you see…a stream? What?

Sure enough, a stream cuts across the corridor as if that was a perfectly normal thing to find in the middle of a concrete maze. It flows from a grate in the north wall, through a meandering sunken channel, then into a grate in the south wall about ten feet farther along. It’s full of rounded river rocks and makes a pleasant gurgling sound. There’s even moss on the banks.

For some reason this annoys you a little. This place is artificial! Why does it have a stream in the middle of a corridor? They didn’t even make a dedicated room for it, which would make as much sense as anything else in this place, it’s just there! For no reason!

…Right. Deep breaths. Maybe there’s a reason and you haven’t found it. Maybe this place is just as random as it looks. Why not have a stream in the middle of a passageway?

There’s a chalkmark on the wall, a squiggly line clearly meant to represent water, and under that, marks that look like OXO. Potable water? Or warning that the water is deadly poison? (You suppose you could go get a frog and test it out, but if it IS deadly, you’d feel awful.)

About ten feet past the stream, the corridor dead-ends with a rusty ladder going down.

Do you have any recommendations for hand embroidery patterns? I'm wanting to make an Edwardian dip waist belt to go with my wedding dress, but I'd really love to embroider it with the Evenstar from LOTR and some scrolling vines/floral motifs to go with it along the sides. I'm just having a hard time finding non-machine patterns.

That sounds super cool! The nice thing about hand embroidery is that you can turn any nice drawing into embroidery.

Searching for soutache patterns will probably give you nice scrollwork that will look great with the evenstar.

For florals, I do have this archive of some nice historical embroidery patterns:

I feel the issue with hand embroidery is not so much the design, but how to get the design on the fabric you want to embroider. Chalk markers, frixxion pens, pin and powder, dissolving or tear-away, none of them have worked perfectly for me. For a belt at least, you can probably draw on the inside without any problem. I tend to just print a design on paper and cut it out so I can chalkmark around the edges.

Today we learned how to sew stripes onto blouse coat sleeves, it's a lot more difficult than it seems.

Main steps:

- open up sleeve at cuff, separating lining

- chalk 3½ inches from sleeve end, sew stripe ABOVE that chalk mark

- separate sleeve on the seam up to your chalkmarks you made

- sew both sides of stripe, keeping close to chalkline

- once finished line up stripe ends on both sides and sew a temporary stitch to make sure they line up

- use pinking shears to make sure the ends of the stripes don't fray

- sew rest of sleeve back together, but also slightly taper the end of the sleeve (the factory sucks at making it right)

- open up the lining now (use a razor or seam ripper, either works)

- feed the sleeve and lining carefully through that new hole to be able to sew the lining onto the cuff (so that when you flip it back out you have a hidden seam)

- once that's done, sew a quick stitch up where the cuff sits against the inner seam (where the excess is pressed open) so that the cuff doesn't fall open when wearing

- then add buttons if you have to now with a dowel or you're gonna be mad at yourself later

- finally do a neat top stitch to hide that you ever went into the sleeve liner at all!

There's a lot of steaming in the process to keep things straight and even, if these instructions aren't clear enough it's ok to ask how to do things or pin things right. Don't be afraid to redo the stripe, it'll be ok. You don't have to backstitch the stripe down. Leave at least 3 inches excess when measuring out how much stripe you need, have more rather than less to work with.
