episodic show, no continuity and all that, but as long as we're talking headcanons about past trauma, what about s02e04 "for the good of the outfit" a general delivers a thinly veiled threat to hawkeye and trapper that if they keep poking sleeping military dogs, they could find themselves stationed permanently at an aid station along the front. in the same breath he threatens their civilian lives, telling them that though they will return to their practices when the war is over, the us army has long arms. hawkeye's letters to his father are surveilled. henry tells hawkeye not to leave the base or he could be arrested.

so i think hawkeye has a pretty good reason to be mistrustful, even hateful towards the army specifically, not just the war. his livelihood and prospects post-war have been threatened, his family dragged into it - that has nothing to do with any foreign entity. the subsequent trauma from such an experience has nothing to do with how good or moral a person hawkeye is, what his emotional or mental state in general might be. there's an abusive system leveraging its structural power to ruin a person's life, and the lives of the people they care about. its defeat is a fluke, and only possible because frank and margaret who are on the side of the system engage in the similar tactics - lying in order to take credit and collect rewards for an achievement they had no part in. even general clayton says that even he is looking down the barrel of the gun of his superiors.

the whole system works together to ensure the santized image of the united states and doesn't hesitate to crush its own citizens if they stand up against it, let alone the citizens of other countries. very serious, heavy, traumatic stuff.

To be honest, musical science projects sounds delightful. 

This was...kinda weird? The crime/leverage plot got pretty lost behind the whole kid thing, and then Nate keeps telling Sophie not to get so invested in the kid thing even though she’s not jeopardising the con in any way, and it’s trying to do character-development things but it all seems kinda off-base. The pieces were fine, but as a whole it didn’t fit together right. Sigh. Though I’m sure there’ll be a couple of months or so between me writing this up and it being published on my blog, right now it’s November 9th and y’all just elected a Biological Mistake in a shitty toupee as President, so I’m a bit shaken to be honest and I’m not focusing as well as I should. I’m gonna go take a breather.
