Another one that goes straight to the top of my list of fast, silly read-alouds that are just plain fun! 🐔🐔🐔 "Chicken Story Time" (2016) by Sandy Asher and Mark Fearing, is absurdly fabulous on the face of it. The unlikely combination of curious chickens and library storytime is ridiculous and hilarious in a way that every preschooler will enjoy (though you might have to deal with some clucking pretend play afterwards), with a sneaky little message about the joys of reading aloud slipped in there to boot. One of my favourite stories recently was "Hattie Peck", about an eggless chicken determined to make herself a family. So I was thrilled when I came across Debi Gliori's "Dragon's Extraordinary Egg" (2013) and found an equally beautiful, heartwarming story about found family and how parental love defies mere biology. Another top-to-tail great storytime book! 🐎🐎🐎 "Finnegan and Fox: The Ten-Foot Cop" (2013) by Helen L. Wilbur, has everything you could want in a story. It's the fictionalised tale of a New York City mounted policeman and his trusty police horse, jammed with both fun adventure and interesting facts. John Manders's illustrations are cheerful and engaging, and I loved that the pictures are genuinely representative of a city neighbourhood, with people of all colours and ethnicities. The story follows Finnegan and Officer Fox through a typical day at work--including some excitement. And at the end of the book there's a lovely section about the history of mounted police in NYC and around the world. Ah, siblings... If you've got kids of multiple ages, you may have encountered that "I want to do everything they do" mentality that comes along with having a big brother or sister. "Charlie and Mouse" (2017) by Laurel Snyder, with fantastic illustrations by Emily Hughes, is not only a wonderful book about siblings, it addresses that issue by packing four sweet, fun stories in a picture book, chapter-style, making little ones feel like they, too, have a "big kid book". Plus, it doesn't hurt to have four short stories at hand for quick storytimes, either! Hughes illustrations are playful and charming, and really evoke the emotions of each situation, and Snyder's stories are wonderfully relatable. Alphabet books! They're a cornerstone of any great library for kids, and I recently realized that I've shared very few of them. So today's book is a little known favourite from my own bookshelf: "The Enormous Mister Schmupsle! An ABC Adventure!" (2003) by Joe Murray. This is one flat-out zany story, with a cat that eats everything in sight, from A to Z. And Murray's retro-cool, wacky illustrations make it feel like you're watching a cartoon. Sometimes the best books are also the weirdest ones. I pulled "Vegetable Glue" (2007), published in some countries as "What I Do With Vegetable Glue", off my shelf the other day, and as I flipped through this odd little ode to eating one's vegetables, I was reminded of how much the kids and I had enjoyed it. 📚📙📗 A nonsensical little gem, Susan Chandler's book suggests that we might literally fall apart in pieces if it weren't for the "vegetable glue" cooked up inside us of all our ingested veggies, which holds all of our parts on. Elena Odriozola's lovely images just add to the sense of exaggeration. Switching things up yet again today with a fantastic non-fiction picture book from my own library, suitable for slightly older kids.
