In need of some serious escapism with everything that's been going on lately? I have just the thing for you! William Joyce's "Dinosaur Bob and His Adventures With the Family Lazardo" (1988) is the ultimate over-the-top, 'round-the-world family adventure story. Originally written in 1988, and expanded with 16 extra pages in 1995, it tells the tale of a globe-trotting family and the pet dinosaur they pick up on their travels. And while I'll admit to having been a bit uncomfortable about the vaguely racist "exotically-named manservant from far away" trope (though it is never wielded in a derogatory manner, and indeed, the character hardly appears at all), overall the story has aged well, and the retro-style illustrations are a good jumping-off point for discussions with kids about what point in time they think this clearly fictional story was meant to be set in ... Another one that goes straight to the top of my list of fast, silly read-alouds that are just plain fun! 🐔🐔🐔 "Chicken Story Time" (2016) by Sandy Asher and Mark Fearing, is absurdly fabulous on the face of it. The unlikely combination of curious chickens and library storytime is ridiculous and hilarious in a way that every preschooler will enjoy (though you might have to deal with some clucking pretend play afterwards), with a sneaky little message about the joys of reading aloud slipped in there to boot. Sleeeep! Most parents desperately want it, and toddlers will do anything to avoid it. And a great bedtime story can be of benefit to both! As I've mentioned previously, I'm not generally a huge fan of cumulative stories, which can feel overly repetitive and get boring fast. With "It Is Not Time For Sleeping" (2016), however, author Lisa Graff and Illustrator Lauren Castillo have struck an ideal balance. As they follow a little boy through his evening routine, from dinner to bedtime, there is just enough reiteration to lull unsuspecting little listeners into sleepiness with the gentle rhythms of repetition, without repeating EVERY SINGLE THING ad nauseum. Ah, siblings... If you've got kids of multiple ages, you may have encountered that "I want to do everything they do" mentality that comes along with having a big brother or sister. "Charlie and Mouse" (2017) by Laurel Snyder, with fantastic illustrations by Emily Hughes, is not only a wonderful book about siblings, it addresses that issue by packing four sweet, fun stories in a picture book, chapter-style, making little ones feel like they, too, have a "big kid book". Plus, it doesn't hurt to have four short stories at hand for quick storytimes, either! Hughes illustrations are playful and charming, and really evoke the emotions of each situation, and Snyder's stories are wonderfully relatable. There's a time for stories with depth and meaning, and a time for sheer silliness. And occasionally, with the best stories, a little meaningful moment sneaks into the lovely and hilarious. That's the case with Travis Foster's adorable "Give Me Back My Book!"
