Plots with lots of details, twists, and turns can be fun, but I love something simple and really, really clever. For that reason, author-illustrator Kate Read's "One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller" (2019) may be my new favourite counting book for young kids. With lushly colourful painted illustrations and just a handful of well-chosen words (and numbers), Read takes her audience on a rollercoaster adventure, as a fox tries to sneak into the local henhouse and gets the surprise of his life! I received a copy of this book from the publisher for consideration for our book club's #FindMeStories_2019 Best Picture Books list, and as I said, it was definitely one of my favourites. I'm a firm believer that there's a perfect book for every occasion. And I have to say, while there are lots of books about toilet training, Janee Trasler's "Pottytime for Chickies" (2014) may well be my favourite. This little board book is less a primer on using the potty (though that does get covered) than a gleefully silly "what not to do" romp about chicks who just want to have a good time, but are eventually persuaded to "do their business". Ah, siblings... If you've got kids of multiple ages, you may have encountered that "I want to do everything they do" mentality that comes along with having a big brother or sister. "Charlie and Mouse" (2017) by Laurel Snyder, with fantastic illustrations by Emily Hughes, is not only a wonderful book about siblings, it addresses that issue by packing four sweet, fun stories in a picture book, chapter-style, making little ones feel like they, too, have a "big kid book". Plus, it doesn't hurt to have four short stories at hand for quick storytimes, either! Hughes illustrations are playful and charming, and really evoke the emotions of each situation, and Snyder's stories are wonderfully relatable.
