This is of course the first subject I’ve ever wanted to blog about. Most everyone has been through it... being in customer service whether retail or restaurant. It’s a good way to make money; it’s also a painful way to make money.
What makes it horrible? The people paying your bills.... the customers. You’ve got the rusher who demands everything even before the request leaves their mouth. You’ve got the picky one that wants very specific things and will complain if they don’t get it exactly right.... whether it’s a service that you provide or not. You’ve got the hagglers that will find sly ways to get the most discounts/ freebies as possible. And you’ve got the people that just won’t leave even though they’ve been in your store for hours. It’s dealing with the unreasonable and sucking it up because “the customer is always right”.
You can experience so many horror stories working in retail online... yet why do we do it? Yes we serve but we’ve been customers ourselves. You know it’s a double edged sword. I sometimes find myself doing the same things that I’ve complained my customers about. Like....making the server go back and forth getting me things because I won’t ask for everything at once. Or demanding that I get my food right away because I’ve already waited 5 minutes for it. Or coming in minutes before closing.
You get a certain amount of entitlement when you’re the customer. And when you’re a server, though you try to make the customer happy, you’re also human, not a slave. At the end of the day, you gotta do what you gotta do to earn a buck and try to remember that not everyone are jerks. Life can be unfair but just try to stay positive and stay kind.
