Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Tumblr media
By Dustin Cabeal
As a lifelong fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, most people expect me to be tired of the franchise or, worse yet, hate every new iteration of the franchise. And while I have been that person for other franchises, I have found it to be a waste of energy and passion. There is, in fact, only one iteration of the TMNT that I have not enjoyed or consumed, and that was the terrible Michael Bay live-action films. There was no greater joy for me than the sequel succeeding in ending the live-action reboot. The one lasting effect that the Bay live-action films have had is the infusion of hip-hop into the franchise, or rather, a more mainstream approach to hip-hop/rap, having moved away from songs about the Turtles or Ninjas… for the most part.
To get it out of the way, I just love the Ninja Turtles. I love seeing what they’ll do with them, how they’ll tweak them and change them, and for some reason, it doesn't corrupt my childhood memories of the animated series and pretending to be Donatello with my three friends making out the rest of the Turtles. It was an amazing feeling to watch this new version with my sons and see them enjoy what’s already their second Ninja Turtle franchise.
There are a lot of comparisons to this film being at least visually inspired by the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse series of movies, which really misses the mark since nearly the same team behind those did The Mitchells vs The Machines, and that is directed by the same person as this movie, Jeff Rowe. Rowe’s style here is much closer to what Mitchells looked like and continues to evolve and change for each project he works on.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Writer Tom Waltz Looks Back on The Last Ronin
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Writer Tom Waltz Looks Back on The Last Ronin
I, a lifelong TMNT fan (see proof below) recently had the chance to chat with Ninja Turtles writer Tom Waltz to look back on his run on the recent dystopian miniseries The Last Ronin, and ahead to the upcoming Armageddon Game storyline at IDW. This was a very exciting opportunity for me and I was thrilled with how it turned out. Read the interview on CBR here. A little Urbane Turtle

What The F*** Is Kojima On?
Hideo Kojima is more than a bit of an enigmatic figure.  At first glance, he seems like your everyday nerd- he grew up in the arcade scene, is a major fan of classic 80’s films, and loves modern day games. It’s not until we analyze his work that we finally come to realize that Kojima is on something wild, and we here at Mesquel fucking want some.
Now let’s just take a moment to unpack what exactly we mean. When we say Kojima is on something, we don’t necessarily mean drugs but come on. It’s pretty unlikely that the flying-fire-whale guy has never taken anything psychedelic, but we certainly don’t want to rush to a conclusion that could be damaging to someone’s character. No, we just want to pop or smoke whatever the hell drove someone to implement a cardboard box as a valid tactical option in a challenging stealth game.
If whatever Kojima is taking is enough to make a relatively mundane nerd put Norman Reedus in a game with a baby in his stomach, imagine what we could do on that shit. We could probably get Liam Neeson to do something with the Teletubbies. Even if the stuff has horrible, lifelong side effects, it doesn’t really matter. A Teletubby x Taken crossover would be well worth any potential brain deterioration.
The real question is how we convince Kojima to give up the goods. Up until now, our investigative team hasn’t been able to confirm where Kojima is sourcing his stuff from, but we’ve got a feeling it’s coming from Bethesda’s Todd Howard, who made cat people fight dragons.
We’re putting out a challenge. Whoever can get us a bottle of that Grade A shit Kojima is getting will get 10,000 Wacky Bucks from our editorial staff. Wacky bucks can be redeemed once in a blue moon for fabulous prizes, like The Heart of Gor’Desh, Eater of Realms, or a few packs of smarties. We didn’t want to give up the heart, but last week it spewed bile that melted an intern, so now it’s got to go.
If you want to send us some of that Kojima Koochie, hit us up on Twitter @MesquelGames.
Cameron Corliss is the founder of Mesquel. He spends all of his time reading, talking about, or playing Video Games. He also enjoys Netflix and a good slice of 1980's New York Style TMNT pizza. You can follow him on Twitter @CountCameron

Am I a true fan if I never read the comics? Am I a fake fan. Mostly I just really want to read the last ronin so much. Have you read it. It reminds of this fan series called midnight. You ever heard of the fan tmnt comic midnight?
OF COURSE YOU ARE. Lots of people in the fandom haven't read the comics. You definitely don't need to be knee deep in the franchise, there's literally a dozen versions. Don't worry, you're definitely not a fake fan.
I don't like call anyone a fake fan, because this particular franchise has been literally everywhere for 39 years and unless someone is literally pretending to like the turtles for strange reasons, I'm not sure you can have a fake TMNT fan.
I do know about Midnight! It's fairly well known.
PS, the website Read Comic Online will give you the issues for free. Warning for pop ups and ads, obviously.

Me, throwing my decades old queer autistic ADHD Ninja Turtles content at Tumblr and hoping something sticks: Okay but what if I'm really really annoying and just need to shut the fuck up because I talk too much, you know, like that one anti told me after praising my writing after accusing me of enjoying taboo darkfic thus being complicit in moral crimes and then saying it was her job to purge people like me from fandom-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A younger fan, sincerely: OMG hi I love everything you post on TMNT I'm so honored you reblogged me or replied to me, you're an amazing fandom resource, thank you for all the incredible content on your blog, we love you.
Me, literally actually blushing:

If I'm understanding correctly we have: ROTTMNT movie coming out, the new 2023 TMNT movie announcement, Bay allegedly working on another TMNT movie, and the people who made the Batman crossover wanting to make a sequel. The turtles are staying BOOKED
Also! At some point Kevin Eastman talked about a potential Netflix series with the 2012 voice cast, I have not forgotten. Especially now that he's finally writing for Marvel, which inspired TMNT in the first place. Full circle, over here.
I, for one, am absolutely ready to embrace every single one. Fuck the hate, fuck people my own age whining that it won't be as good as we remember*, fuck people half my age whining that it won't be as good as they want. We're a bizarrely divided fandom, we apparently hate our own franchise whenever it gains a version.
*frankly, I prefer Look We're In The Future And It's Pretty rather than Nope I Want My Old Media Back. Like, in order to go to your past favorite, you can watch and read the episodes all you want. Over there. Away from me and the fans who enjoy new things.
Shrug.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11116983/47/Firebird-Scratches-TMNT-100-Themes-Challenge
Hey @firebirdscratches have I mentioned how much I quote this part to myself during fibro flares?
"To the ninja - pain is not a stranger, to be greeted with shock and fear. Pain is a guest, to be treated with respect - a familiar friend, who walks at your side. An ally, who keeps you alert. A teacher, who keeps you humble. A companion in times of loneliness. A reward, for hard work worth doing. Pain shows us an opportunity to grow. It is a challenge, prompting us to face and conquer our fears. An offering, to those we truly love. And a comfort in times of trouble - because it is pain that reminds us we are still alive."

"...The world's not a stage; it's a video game, and not only does Michelangelo have a pocket full of quarters, he also downloaded the walk-through off the internet. And if the walk-through turns out to be wrong, he's the king of button mashers. Mike just tends to be generally happier than his brothers, but he also tends not to look at the world too closely. He avoids upsetting topics, deals with fear and frustration by ignoring it whenever possible and making light of it when it's not. Mike's the only artistic one in the group, often sketching or working on a story when he's supposed to be doing something else. In several continuities, Mike ends up a published writer."

Awwww, a blast from fandom past. How our love began.

Remember, this was written by a TMNT fanfic writer back in 2008. It's one of the most genuine takes on the characters and the fandom, and I based several headcanons on this essay.
-
Most people reflexively reach for Raphael as Leo's opposite. But it's actually Mikey who most fits the bill. Where Leo is uptight, serious, studious, focused, dependable, and more into their Japanese culture, Mikey is relaxed, playful, unfocused, more American-influenced, and unless something life and death is going on, rather unreliable. Mikey is everything Leo is not, with perhaps one exception: an idiot.
A lot of people have taken the "Mikey the noodle brain" concept to heart. Which is something that drives me up the wall more than the St Leo concept, actually. Mikey's got so much life, and so much potential in him that it's a crying shame to see it ignored by so many people. He's also been shown to be incredibly insightful into people's behaviour. While Leo shines in analyzing combat situations, Mikey shines while analyzing group dynamics. If you skipped to this section, scroll up for his insight into Leo's roll in the group. It's Mikey, not Don or Raph, who grasps how hard Leo has to work to keep their group on it's toes, and it's Mikey who calls for compassion because of this..."

Just out of curiosity, why ninja turtles? Did you choose the tmnt life or did they choose you?
They chose me.
I remember being nine years old in 1988, catching a scene from an episode and it was Leo telling Mikey not to eat the props (Curse of the Evil Eye).
And it must have been the explosion of dopamine from my undiagnosed ADHD and autismz but something powerful drew me in. I literally dove into the shiny bizarre ball pit that was the growing franchise featuring the weirdest characters who changed the face of independent comics and analysis of cartoon team personality types.
The Leader Strategist, the Muscle Brawn, The Genius Brain, The Comic Relief Who Has Hidden Depths That Nobody Understands And Is Actually A Divergent Wild Card But Let's Just Call Him Party Guy.*
*(You see, Michelangelo was one of the first characters to display depths and growths beyond a stereotype in the 80s. And his character was essentially adopted by the fandom before we knew we too were ADHD and Autistic.)
Anyway.
Also, the cartoon was made to sell the toys based on the comic. And then the movie happened and everything exploded.
I remember learning about the original Mirage artists making their own parody comics in the 90s, eventually informing some of the fandom. I remember being part of the push to get 2003 on the air. I remember how Next Mutation broke Eastman and Laird apart and how visually terrible the show was, even with a fantastic premise. (Peter refused to sign off on it, Kevin signed off reluctantly, Peter took full control of Mirage and Kevin went on to be a consultant for future iterations, aka fanfiction that got approved by the creator.)
Also, in college, I had the Ninja Turtles in my head as imaginary friends cheering me on. I wrote a short story with my self insert hanging out with the Ninja Turtles in her mind. This was in the late 90s. It was rare and puzzling. Fanfiction was barely a thing the way it is now, we had to hide everything and people would say it didn't make sense to imagine yourself with nonhuman animal mutants with humanoid psychology, why can't you be around real people, why are you so weird, quit being weird
They totally chose me.
This was a fun ask!

Me, meeting a TMNT fan on a forum, chat server, or blog who is a huge Mikey fan: *happy flapping without realizing*
Me, after learning that New Friend has been reading my blog and fanfics and enjoys my headcanons about Mikey being psychic and autistic: *happy flapping plus flappy feet and leg kicky and those really specific little squeals and gasps from the back of my throat and that actually hit my dopamine button without me realizing, literally triggering ADHD RRE, the flip side of RSD: Recognition Responsive Euphoria*
...I'm pretty easy to please.

Me, chatting with a friend and beginning to discuss the Seth Rogan Ninja Turtles movie in production:
"Yeah, Seth Rogan is producing. He's a mega fan close to my age, so he's watched all the movies and cartoons, read all the comics, is probably secretly in the fandom. So I feel better than most fans about it."
Me, realizing that I defended Seth Rogan while staying emotionally mature like a goddamn adult:
Tumblr media
...anyway.
Seth, if you're reading this, I hope you let your inner fan out and make this movie amazing.

Hahahaha so a few people have messaged me to tell me how they look up to me for my unwavering optimism in the face of so many painful disabilities as well as being harassed, etc etc. Sometimes they tell me how much I really do seem like a version of Michelangelo mixed with Donatello. And as much as I blush and wave it off, I really really need to hear it. Even if my AO3 fics get no comments, I get Asks and messages where people have read all my fics and got inspired and then that in turn inspires me. I've gotten requests that are bubbling in my writerbrain. But literally the only things holding me back are the chronic fatigue and insomnia issues. So, this is my thank you I'm so sorry update. Chapters are totally being outlined and written, at least from my bed! And do keep encouraging me.
Also, please remind me who takes Imagine requests particularly for ADHD Mikey and Reader, who would actually be me, because that totally inspires me.
Also, I am in desperate need of "it's going to be okay" stories.

Hi! I'm new to the TMNT fandom and I was wondering if you could rec me some good, Hurt/Comfort that's Mikey-centric and long (and hopefully complete - but I'm not picky!). Thank you so much!!!!
*looks left* *looks right* *WIDE SMIRK*
Ohhhh FANDOM. We have some fic recently needed, please help this person out.
Anon, you're welcome to start with my fics, they're all Mikey Angst, every one. And I have favorites and bookmarks of Mikey Angst. I'm on AO3 and FF under this name.
https://www.fanfiction.net/~brightlotusmoon
I also write little oneshots around Tumblr and it's usually under tags like Angst Fic or Depressed Mikey.
There are a few exclusively Mikey Angst writers around here. Mikey is so adored he almost has as much angst as Donnie. Almost.
I think the second most type of Mikey fics these days are fics that exaggerate his goofy immaturity. I just finished reading a fic in which he was completely obnoxious the entire time, and it felt painful.
Time to stop doing that, writers. We already know he's a loud friendly goof, we don't need to see it exaggerated.
