Still Life - Studio Workshop

These are my final 9 images from the still life studio workshop today, 19th November.

This workshop was an exploration of the properties of light, design elements, composition, camera techniques and the effects on the representation of the object. I explored 5 different lighting techniques and have produced 9 different examples of these:

Front light

Side light (left and right)

45 degree light (left and right)

Rim light ( 45 degrees both sides and directly behind)

Top light

Camera Settings: 1/125 / F8 / ISO100

The type of light used for this series of photographs was soft light. We can tell soft light is being used because there are no harsh and sharp shadow lines. I used a large softbox which diffused the hard studio light and created soft lighting for these still life shots.

I chose a light background because I thought it would compliment the dark brown of the wood and leaves a lot better than a dark black background or colour/pattern. 

These photographs are high key. We know this because there is a lot of bright white and highlights in the image. This was confirmed as the histogram for these images all spiked in the highlights and dipped low in the shadows.

Lighting Techniques

Tuesday the 3rd of September, 2019

During Tuesdays double studio class, we were starting lighting techniques using a harsh studio light. There were four to be set-up and photographed: Rembrandt, loop, paramount and side. I was grouped with Shaun, Tina and Leo. We struggled during this task as our set-up was experiencing problems such as light meters not performing correctly.  These are a series of images using harsh light.

Side Lighting

This technique is very straightforward. A model is positioned with a harsh light to either side, for this image, I chose the light to be on my right - her left-  which allowed a pose such as this to be dramatic compared to a simple stance. The darkness that formed in the inner corner of her eye gives a mysterious shadow straight through her pupil.

Rembrandt

For Rembrandt lighting, the light is positioned at an angle to allow a triangle to form under the models eye - which can be seen from this image. This was a struggle to complete however, loop was even worse. As the eye is darkened, I’m not too sure if that is considered Rembrandt but that was the best I could achieve with the set-up we had; which sadly kept falling apart.

Paramount

Paramount - also known as beauty - is used to take straight up portraits of models. The most commonly used. Harsh and powerful is the aim of this lighting technique which can be seen from the harsh light on the models forehead. If this was a soft box, the forehead puddle of light would be almost invisible. Despite the model wearing glasses and shadows being seen on the face, I find it interesting. It’s different.

Loop

Loop was the hardest lighting technique to re-create. Similar to Rembrandt however, this entailed a shadow to connect the nose and the edge of the mouth together instead of a triangle. Due to the similar light positions, I really struggled to try and get the perfect ‘loop’.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll try to revisit my teens and some of its key moments through a Euphoria’s inspired prism. Although the show depicts a different generation in the singular (compared to the French one I grew in) American way, I certainly relate on lots of aspects. The one thing I can regret about the show is that, so far, no character pictures the struggle, to deal as a teen, with illness (other than mental) nor physical disability or such (though cancers and others major conditions did unfortunately progressed + US painkillers issues are a key point in Rue’s addiction story). the above images are of 4 different lighting techniques

image 1 - is 45 degree angle also known as Rembrandt, on the left side of the face between eye and nose is the shape of a triangle, this occurs as a result of where the soft box is situated in relation to the subject; the soft box is to the side and at an angle of 45 degrees.

image 2 - is rim lighting effect.  this occurs by placing the light directly behind the object.  this creates an eclipse effect.

image 3 - this is frontal light technique, as the name suggests, the light is in front of the object, in the particular image the light was slightly above the object.

image 4 - this is side lighting, depending on the colour of the background this can create a moody look.  the object is coming out from the shadows.

Post Production - Contact Sheet

Historical Context of the Contact Sheet

A contact sheet is a grid of thumbnails and it is used to view a series of images at a glance. The contact sheet was originally a roll of negatives from film photography. But now when a contact sheet is used in digital photography, it is often used in the editing process and helps to identify which photographs will be used or discarded.

My Studio Contact Sheets

I used Adobe Bridge to create these contact sheets, using the folder of images I already had saved to my computer. Once I created the contact sheets I exported them as a PDF and used the tools on Microsoft Edge to markup the selected images. I then saved it and took screenshots to upload here.
