The whole Brittany is a math genius thing makes me so! mad! Because it plays into all the most wrong perceptions about my beloved mathematics. Even after the "genius twist", the narrative makes it pretty clear Birtt had never taken an interest in maths or studied it but tries to play it like she magically knew it. Mathematics cannot be mastered at any level without incredible dedication, and it builds on itself more than maybe any other subject. You can't just magically figure out stuff! And they have her get into MIT because she wrote down random numbers and it was a palindromic prime or something if I recall correctly. That's ridiculous! First of all, that's not impressive. That's the kind of stuff we write a program for and leave it running so we find a new example every few years. People prove theorems, computers do boring calculations. Maths has a lot less to do with numbers than people think frankly, and without justification results are not accepted. Let us look at the mathematician considered the most naturally gifted, Ramanujan. He grew up poor in India with little access to mathematical resources and due to this most of his work was rediscovery and he never really learned the mathematical rigour necessary to formalize proofs. He dedicated his life to mathematics and wrote letters filled with results he'd send to mathematicians trying to interest them in his work. For years he was dismissed as a crank because he was an unknown and lacked mathematical rigour, until GH Hardy took an interest in him and had him brought to Cambridge. Even if Britt had secretly dedicated her entire life to maths and had written a counterexample to the Riemann hypothesis (the most important problem in mathematics), she likely would have been dismissed. Though if they had written this at least it would fit in with the normal unbelievability of the show. They couldn't have called up 1 random mathematician and asked them what would be impressive? I know this is dumb and glee has plenty of worst stuff but this is still the one that makes me the most irrationally upset. I feel like Ryan Murphy personally took a dump on my life's work.

Hehe hi Anon so I know it's been nearly two months and tbh I'm not sure why I put off answering this for so long. Not like I have a ton to say because while I understand and appreciate your perspective, I also think... it's not that deep? And woah, I know that's very very rich coming from me when I monopolize the freaking Glee shovel but the genius storyline is largely a joke.

I personally like it because imo it adds much needed agency and dimension to Brittany's character and story, and that's a convo for another day, but it is a joke. The writers truly didn't think anything of it, much less really considered the actual reality of mathematics. Like, yes, it is ridiculous! It's played for laughs like much of Brittany's ch is. One of those instances of Glee being very aware of the nonsense and leaning into it.

But I also happen to personally believe that that doesn't matter. What matters is validating Brittany's unique point of view and her way of seeing the world, saying that hey, there are ways in which she's actually much smarter than most. Is it in any way plausible, no. But even I, notorious Glee too-seriously-taker, would advise you not to take Glee's disregard of how maths actually works personally. This is a big rant for something that doesn't matter too much, dramatically, in the series. The show leans into the ridiculousness of it all enough while also focusing on Britt's character more than the actual science of it all. And I can personally get behind that. I think the 4x22 scene with her and the MIT professors is hilarious. But I also left maths behind when I graduated high school so what do I know.

A definitive ranking of DWTS Season 29′s celebrities thus far

So I'm obsessed with Dancing with the Stars as much as the next guy. I’ve seen every season since number 11, when I was like 9 years old. But I dropped off a few seasons ago, disappointed that they really had the nerve to put the legend Lindsey Stirling on the same season as the other legend Jordan Fisher. That was not fair to anyone, because Lindsey would have wiped the floor in literally any other season. 

But Season 29′s cast was released and I got excited again. About 80% of these names I was not only familiar with, but were people I enjoyed for some reason or another. Skai Jackson, Nelly, Johnny Weir, AJ McLean, Nev Schulman, Carole Baskin, Justina Machado, Monica Aldama, and the list just goes on. They really said “we need to get young people back into the show.” And they did. I was hooked. And though Len is gone and Carrie Ann is going some sort of which way with her votes (we don’t talk about it), I’ve watched every episode with bright eyes and so much excitement. We have some good dancers this season. And some bad ones. But mostly good. So here’s my definitive ranking of this season’s stars (and, by extension, pros). And if you don’t agree, that’s fine. I am simply a nineteen-year-old girl who likes to watch ballroom dancing. 

NUMBER 15: CAROLE MF BASKIN AND PASHA PASHKOV

Besides the moral obligations to not allow a murderer to appear on the show, I think DWTS did a good job trying to rope people in by bringing her on. When the cast list was released, my jaw dropped because I knew she was going home first and I wanted to be there to see it. 

And somehow, she did not... go home first? She made it another episode? While I’m sure it was a ploy to keep people interested in the show so they didn’t watch the premiere and drop off, Carole Baskin is sure to go down in DWTS history as one of the worst competitors. Her highest score was a 16, sure, but her lowest was an 11. We’re treading Master P territory. And I had a full traumatic episode watching her in a lion-esque unitard. Fuck, I needed to bleach every orifice on my body. (Overall Rating: 1 dead husband/10)

NUMBER 14: CHARLES OAKLEY & EMMA SLATER

You cannot tell me this man isn’t having the most fun he’s had in a minute. He was another easy-to-spot early elimination, but I actually enjoyed watching him to some degree. Emma danced circles around him, but you could really tell he was trying his damnedest and I appreciate it. And his performances didn’t strike cold, dead fear into my heart like other people.

He also got the same average score as Carole over the first two episodes, but one of those was NOT an 11. Slightly better, imo, just a little less improvement than Carole---which is why Derek booted him in the first place. (Overall rating: 1.5 left feet/10)

NUMBER 13: JESSE METCALFE AND SHARNA BURGESS

Did they---did they ever dance? I literally don’t remember anything other than that Newsies dance, which I have to say I particularly enjoyed. It might be because I like Newsies. It might be because Sharna’s hair is gorgeous this season. I don’t know, but it probably wasn’t because of Jesse’s dancing. 

That’s literally all I have to say. (Overall rating: 2 confused braincells/10)

NUMBER 12: CHRISHELL STAUSE AND GLEB SAVCHENKO 

WOAH, she’s coming in with the hot takes! Chrishell hasn’t even been eliminated yet! And look, it’s not even Chrishell’s fault that she’s so low on the list. It really isn’t. She’s been performing, well, okay thus far. Not great, considering her highest score was a 26 on a Paso double where she literally did not even dance (look, I’m not a judge, but I would’ve given it a 21 MAYBE). She’s trying, and she seems to be really enjoying it; I absolutely adore her energy. But most of the issue here is attributed to her partner, Gleb.

His choreography is just... I don’t know... lazy. He throws himself around like a god among men and Chrishell is just there. I don’t really appreciate the pros who prefer to dance over their partners instead of with them. I don’t understand why he thinks this method will get him a mirrorball, but it’s just not gonna happen. (Overall rating: 2 measures of actual dancing/10)

NUMBER 11: ANNE HECHE AND KEO MOTSEPE

Look how happy they look! No, but seriously, they didn’t do that bad. They just had a bad week. Week 2, they had a higher average score than SIX other couples on the show, and they left with a score of 21. I legitimately think that their Disney night dance was underscored. Sure, it wasn’t wonderful, but it didn’t deserve a fifteen.

I know they had no chance to win the mirrorball, but Keo has a history of being stuck with less-than-stellar partners. Anne was not a bad match; they just had bad luck and better competition. I did love watching them, though. And Keo is beautiful, but need I say more? (Overall rating: 3.5 early elims/10)

NUMBER 10: VERNON DAVIS AND PETA MURGATROYD CHMERKOVSKIY

I honestly haven’t enjoyed Peta’s choreography since Season 22, when she and Nyle DiMarco ate up the dance floor and left not a single crumb. She and Peta were another pair where I was like, “Wait, who got eliminated? They’re still here?” The judges were right in saying Vernon had a lot of energy on stage, and look at him here. He’s big cheesin’.

They kind of existed for me is all I have to say. The only reason they’re ranked higher than Anne and Keo is because their average score was just overall better. They never scored extremely well, with their highest score being a 22, but they never did too horribly either. They were meh. (Overall rating: 4 touchdowns/10)

NUMBER 9: NELLY AND DANIELLA KARAGACH

Another hot take? Yes. I can never tell whether or not Nelly enjoys being here until he actually dances. During rehearsal, confessionals, critiques, he always looks a little embarrassed or nervous? I’m not sure. But just like Vernon and Peta, all of their dances have been kind of meh. 

That’s not to put Daniella down in any sense. It’s her first season as a pro, and her abilities definitely shine through in her performance. But like I said about Gleb earlier, she has a tendency to dance over Nelly at times (see: the Freddy Krueger dance from last week). I don’t see Nelly living up to the standards the judges say he’s lived up to thus far, but that might just be my personal opinion. (Overall rating: 5 heeled sneakers/10)

NUMBER 8: MONICA ALDAMA AND VALENTIN CHMERKOVSKIY

Another surprisingly hot take. I actually really enjoyed each of Monica’s dances this season, especially since she’s someone with essentially zero dance experience. I’m still very pissy that the Ratched dance sent her home---it was one of my favorite dances of the night, and I have no clue why she only got a 22 for it (especially when Chrishell and Gleb got a 26). 

Val has always been someone on the show who can take a non-dancer and genuinely make them better. This is the case with Monica. We saw so much improvement with her over the weeks. We’re getting to the part of the list where I love all of the dancers. Still, Monica and Jeannie should not have been the bottom 2 last week, but in the case between the two, it’s right that Monica was eliminated. Still, I would have loved to see her next week. (Overall rating: 6 cheer pyramids/10)

NUMBER 7: SKAI JACKSON AND ALAN BERSTEN

Sure, she got the first 10 of the season. Sure, the Chucky dance was kind of spectacular. But she’s also had the lowest score for two out of seven weeks so far. She has yet to be in the bottom, but I’m sure that’s the fans working for her. I can’t deny her talent on the dance floor, but I would argue that objectively, Skai has made the most mistakes out of everyone this season.

She’s been remarkably inconsistent over the course of the season, but when she’s good, she’s really, really good. She was my pick to win when the cast was released, but now I don’t see that happening unless the fans really come to vote on her, which I think they will. But there is no excuse for an 18 on Week 6. She can do better. I know she can. But until then, she stays in the middle of my list. (Overall rating: 6 Ms. Kiplings/10)

NUMBER 6: JEANNIE MAI AND BRANDON ARMSTRONG

To be completely honest, I had Jeannie Mai pegged as an early elimination from Week 1. But she and Brandon continue to astound me as a team. I love every single one of their dances, sad that they’ve been consistently underscored. That Hannibal Lecter paso was stunning, and the Up dance on Disney night made me tear up a little. 

They’re not higher for the sole reason that others are just better. Not because I don’t love what they put out on the stage every week, but Jeannie just isn’t the strongest technically. Until they get eliminated, though, I’ll be watching with bated breath. (Overall rating: 7 hole-in-ones/10)

NUMBER 5: KAITLYN BRISTOWE AND ARTEM CHIGVENTSEV

Do I just not see what everyone else is seeing when they’re obsessing over Kaitlyn Bristowe? I mean, everything she’s done so far has been wonderful, but she’s not my favorite. Technically, it’s on point 85% of the time. and she has the second-highest point total so far in the competition, but she has yet to do a dance where I step back and think, “Wow.” That’s what puts her behind the top four.

I did not like the Cruella DeVille paso doble at all last week, but I think that was attributed to the song choice more than anything else. I have yet to be taken aback by Kaitlyn and Artem, but their work is undeniably, objectively some of the best on the show. (Overall rating: 7 roses/10)

NUMBER 4: AJ MCLEAN AND CHERYL BURKE

Now we’re at the spot on the list where if any of these guys win the mirrorball, I will be satisfied. Something about AJ is simply magnetic. He has such a kind disposition and wonderful talent on the dance floor, it’s so hard not to love him. His samba is one of my favorite dances on this season so far, and I’m genuinely concerned that he’s been underscored this whole time. 

Cheryl is a mf VETERAN at this, too. She knows how to teach this man to destroy a dance floor. The energy he brings, the life he brings, the nasty footwork that he DEMOLISHES. I did not expect to love AJ as much as I do. In my opinion, the most improvement we’ve seen in a star this season. (Overall: 8.5 backstreets/10)

NUMBER 3: JUSTINA MACHADO AND SASHA FARBER

Justina is living proof that you don’t have to be as big around as my pinky finger to do ballroom dancing well. She’s easily the best female star this season, and Sasha has accentuated her talents on the dance floor without overpowering her, which I enjoy. On top of that, she looks so happy to be here, which translates heavily into her dancing. 

I will say, not every dance from her has been my favorite, but there hasn’t been a single dance out of her that I haven’t liked. Her presence is so powerful and destructive that everyone needs to watch their backs. Remember, this is a sitcom mom, not a professional dancer. (Overall rating: 8.5 days at a time/10)

NUMBER 2: JOHNNY WEIR AND BRITT STEWART

I am a firm believer that Johnny and Britt should have gotten a perfect 30 on their contemporary back in Week 5. I am also a firm believer that they should have gotten a perfect 30 on their Viennese waltz last week. I am consistently blown away by Britt’s choreography every single week, and their chemistry as a pair is unlike anyone I’ve seen in the show’s history. 

What I like about them so much is how much of a team they are. That really makes so much difference out on the dance floor. Their grace and style is completely unmatched, and as a first season pro, Britt is destroying some of the pros who have been here for years... Gleb. I can’t wait to see their performances every single week, and I hope they continue to dance together somehow even after the show is over. (Overall rating: 9.9 triple axels/10)

NUMBER 1: NEV SCHULMAN AND JENNA JOHNSON CHMERKOVSKIY

Hey, quick question: did you expect this? Because I definitely didn’t. Catfish has always been my guilty pleasure show to watch when I’m bored and lonely, and Nev has always been this super dorky guy, so when they announced the cast list, I was like “Oh, this is gonna be funny as hell.” Because it could only go one of two ways: 1) Nev fumbles around like a dork and goes home pretty early, or 2) he wins the mirrorball. 

APPARENTLY it’s the latter. Nev surprised me, and I think everyone, with his natural talent, and Jenna is heavily playing off that in her choreography. She’s been giving him very difficult, technical work and he’s has continued to astound. With the first 30 of the season rightfully deserved, Nev is a force to be reckoned with. Like I’ve said earlier, some of the pros like to dance over their partners to hide their weaknesses. I would go so far as to argue Jenna lets him dance over her. Together, they’re an absolute wildfire, and if they continue at this pace, consider the competition already won. (Overall rating: 10 chest hairs/10)

DWTS SEASON 27 DISNEY NIGHT TRASH THOUGHTS

I go back and forth on Disney night, but I loved this one! So let’s get to it!

Opening Number: THE BEST!! I loved this so much. With all the little Easter eggs! The little, chmergess, valenna, Artem with the “glass slipper”, bobby flossing with goofy, the dinglehopper, Emma rushing on stage lol, the pro dancing, freaking EVERYTHING was so extra and I loved it! I just whew it was so good!!!! Omg val with Jason on his shoulders.

She is fake!” oop! Blehhhhh. Okay this dance was really pretty. By far my favorite of hers. She’s like a real life brunette barbie. Isn’t that Theresa? Sorry got off track. Her constant blank smile worked in this dance so that is probably why I liked it most. Child of mine said the only part he liked was the rainbow lolololol. I think it was pretty overscored IMO but hey they don’t pay me to judge for some bullshit reason. JP & Cheryl: I loved his Gaston. I loved his little obsession with Disney though, that was adorable. And he is an amazing drawer. That ugly ass rattail though. Whew. Probably my favorite of his rehearsal packages. I still don’t know why he was second last night. OKAy so this dance was entertaining as all hell but like ¼ VW and ¾ jazz lol But he embodied Gaston. I think he needed a different part to play than that sexy latin lover she is making him be. I have been really disappointed with Cheryl this season. My memaw was like….wait…..i thought this was a VW? Or did they have a jazz? LOL oooop.  I’d have only given it one 10….

Demarcus & Linds: I liked their package a lot. It was really cute and really sweet. I can’t imagine having to do those lifts with a bad finger. Okay I have a LOT of thoughts on this one again. Those lifts saved his ass because those feet were ROUGH. Stompy and clunky. But he seems to be having a blast and that’s the best thing to see. And he’s really pretty. Like woah. And god linds with that hair?! Whew she’s a gorgeous burgundy! LMAO she’s turning into a satellite. I die. Evanna & Keo: I am about to be a messy bitch, but I cannot stand Evanna’s eye makeup. Hate it. Stoic Keo is the best lol I don’t have a ton to say about this dance though….it was good, she was a bit underscored but it didn’t really wow me….she got off time a few times I did see that. Also did anyone else notice how much she looked like nastia this week?? Like so much.

Joe & Jenna: My mom hated Jason lol oops. People are assholes. Straight assholes. I get he sucks ass, like I get it. But why be complete dicks to people??? IF THERE IS HATE IN YOUR HEART, LET IT OUTTTTTT. She seemed a lot more patient and encouraging with him this week which I love to see. He tired. He really did. And seemed to be having fun. That’s important to me. He missed a lot but That’s okay. CAI saying he had a ton of content then Len being a dick and saying there was none? I mean…..try to freaking get your shit together.

Bobby & Sharna: Loved the package, loved her wig, loved her outfit. He knows what to say though, he is just happy to be here. I thought this was his best dance yet. Stepped wrong a couple times and was kind of stiff but by far his best dance. Also there was some fish mouth going on at times. The facials were KILLING me. I would be terrified that wig would just come flying. I want to see that once actually. Just fly across the floor like the cane in the Mary Poppins dance with Charlie. I would fucking lose it! Sorry back to topic. He was good this week. “catch of the day” I can’t. There is improvement. I liked the comments from the judges a lot. LMFAO he said thank you when Erin said the hottest Ariel LMAO

Milo & Witney: He was excited as hell to be at Disney! That was cute. The entrance was so reminiscent of the Batman and Robin dance her and alfonso did. I liked it. I liked this dance, BUT it lacked something. I think them not being in real costumes took away from the dance maybe? Idk I just didn’t feel it nearly as much. He messed up on a couple steps too and it was noticeable because her skirt didn’t hide it. There was a lot of gapping too. Loved the minis though, so cute. Loved wit’s hair too! Scored properly imo

Listen, I get you're salty about Dan not uploading, but please remember than Dan has got actual mental health problems that WILL interfere with his plans. He doesn't just have depression when it's "sad" and "inspiring" how far he's come. Depression can hit you like a bitch out of the blue and leave you with no energy to even do a "small" thing, and yes it will affect his productivity, self-esteem (because surprise, it actually takes a lot of courage to upload these personal videos he makes) 1/3

Woah, alright. Look, anon. I get that there’s most likely a damn good reason why he hasn’t uploaded. Maybe he’s having issues with his mental health. Maybe he’s stressed, or he’s too busy, or too lazy, or he just doesn’t want to. There’s any number of plausible reasons why we haven’t seen a non-tour related video in 4 and a half months. Whatever the reason is, it’s fine. He’s a grown up, and he can do what he wants. He doesn’t owe me shit. And at the end of the day, I’m not THAT upset. I’m a little salty, yeah. Because I enjoy his YouTube videos and he’s stopped making them.

I say he’s hyping it because this is an ongoing thing. He’ll say something vague that makes it seem like something big is coming. And his fans blow it the fuck up every time. Which isn’t Dan’s fault per se, but still. It creates hype, whether voluntarily or not.

Basically, I get what you’re saying. There’s a reason Dan hasn’t uploaded. We don’t know what that reason is. Maybe it’s a lame reason like he just doesn’t want to, or maybe it’s a more serious reason like he’s depressed and he can’t. I don’t know. You don’t know. And whatever the reason is, it’s fine. I don’t honestly care that much. I just think a lot of the hype and resulting drama could be avoided if Dan wouldn’t give himself deadlines that he inevitably won’t meet. Like, instead of “I’ll upload in June, after my birthday.” He could have just as easily said “I’m working on a video. I’ll tell you when I’m ready to post it.” That way, he’s not gonna have people salty when mid July comes along and that video he mentioned isn’t up.

Regardless, I do care about Dan’s mental health and I do want him to be okay. (He’s made no indication that he isn’t, but again, I don’t know shit) He’s going to be okay. And in 2021 or whenever, when we finally get “The June Video” I’ll still watch it and enjoy whatever it is. Until then, i don’t think it’s unreasonable for me and others to be missing Dan’s content.

OMG THE SHADES!

Forgive the cliche: it really was a night of firsts at Irving Plaza Wednesday night.

It was the first show of the year for Jared Leto’s perennially maximalist rock outfit 30 Seconds To Mars — you know, the band he maintains between movie contracts. From beneath straggly hair and an unkept beard the singer/actor mentioned his group had been holed up recently, trying to wrap a new album due out later this year. A new single drops Friday, Leto said.

Wednesday’s performance also kicked off the Citi Sound Vault concert series at the downtown Manhattan venue, which presents major acts — artists far too popular to play the 1,000 capacity spot otherwise — in an intimate setting leading up to the Grammy Awards, to be held Sunday night in Brooklyn. Eminem, Dave Matthews, The National and Childish Gambino will all play the sold-out club this week.

And I’m willing to bet Leto’s mid-week visit marked the first time an Academy Award-winning musician had graced Irving Plaza’s small stage, which is typically reserved for mid-level punk bands and nascent hip-hop stars.

It appears Leto’s focus has temporarily shifted back to his music — he divulged a much larger tour will come later this year, which will include a stop at Madison Square Garden — as he powered through an hour of music with his short-staffed band. Most of night’s arena-sized instrumentals came from guitarist Tomo Milicevic, who played guitar, keys and synth drums on a pad and modified toms — because drummer and Jared’s brother Shannon Leto was sick, there was no drum kit to speak of this night. Bassist Steve Aiello stood off to the side, barely visible as he chipped in for some songs. Otherwise, it was all backing track.

Donning red track pants and what looked like a matching Gucci pajama top, Leto was affable, even a little dispiriting as he mocked how the band is “about 150 years old.” The group’s breakthrough came around 2005 — how do you think Paul McCartney feels, Jared?

It was a bit off-putting, too, how adverse Leto seemed to playing the band’s biggest hit, the emo staple “The Kill”: “Do you really need to hear it one more time?” he asked before dutifully playing two acoustic choruses. He cut it off as soon as he could.

Again, how do you think McCartney feels? You think he wants to keep playing “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” until the end of time? Give the people what they want!

But then there were moments of greatness, that made me wonder as I have before: what if Leto and Co. actually took this band seriously 100 percent of the time? What if this was the only passion in his artistic repertoire? Would 30 Seconds To Mars be as big as all the “woah-oh” choruses it's peddled over the last decade?

The brightest spark came courtesy of a cover this night; Leto warned that things were about to get “a little sexy” as he began Rihanna’s smash ballad “Stay.” Vocally, it was nearly flawless. Leto can really really wail when he wants to, and for the only time Wednesday night truly seemed lost in the song, his arms swaying, his eyes closed.

His “Tribute Song” followed, a medley of hits from recently fallen music bigs: Prince’s “Purple Rain,” Bowie’s “Heroes,” SoundGarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” and Linkin Park’s “Crawling.” It was a well-woven — if not a touch contrived — montage, ruined a bit by the lyrics sheet taped to the floor.

Nevertheless, the devout crowd was hooked; folks from Russia, Venezuela, Denmark and farther had come for the show. And Leto was a fine showman, running laps across the stage, letting fans sing the hooks to “Kings And Queens” and “This Is War.” The band’s latest single “Walk On Water” was oddly stripped down to an acoustic number and took on an almost smoky, southern rock vibe. Why wouldn’t the band play its promotional single as it was recorded? Who knows.

All in all it was a fun show, from a band about which it’s best you don’t think too deeply. There was a confetti finish as a few dozen fans hopped on stage to sing the anthemic oldie “Closer To The Edge” and still, for all of Leto’s wackiness, I was already looking forward to the group’s show at The Garden — where these monster songs belong.

50. Weirdest story idea you’ve ever had.

Woah, that’s a really good question. I feel like a lot of my stories are a bit.... “out there”? I’ve been told that Coax the Cold was weird? I once wrote a romance fic based on the movie the departed.... That was pretty weird. A million years ago, I started a fic based on the King’s Speech where Harry was a queer prince in the 30s with a speech impediment and Louis was a failed actor turned speech therapist hired to help him? That was pretty bizarre and it never really went anywhere... I got a new idea super recently that would allow me to involve Old English and Anglo-Saxon history (two of my big nerdy passion esp. oe) into the story and that’s pretty intense and weird too imo. (But it would be so fun!!!) What else... I don’t think my vampire idea is too weird, but who knows. Oh! I wanted to write a fic based on Charlie Chaplin’s life. With like... Louis as Chaplin, this vaudeville actor who becomes Hollywood’s darling in the early 20s and Harry as like... this builder on set. Gemma would have been another star at the studio who would pretend to date Louis so that her brother and him could be left alone...
