remembering my first run of engage and thinking "hey wouldn't it be cool if (favourite VA) was in this since I apparently can't escape him" (he's in like. a lot of the anime I've watched (completely unintentionally too, I just kept finding him)) (should also mention I hadn't seen any of the trailers so I was going in completely blind)

the game starts up. alear opens his eyes. before me stand the shocked faces of the two sweetest and most hardworking kids you ever did meet.

and then I hear it. the green one opens his mouth and I hear it. and I have to do a double take because surely not but also. I know that voice.

and sure enough...

Everywhere I go. I hear his voice.

poppy ✦ do you have lore surrounding your s/i, or is your s/i more or less just there to project on with your f/o(s)?

it depends on the s/i or oc, since i have several, but i'll give you a brief description of each of the main ones under the cut.

mana: makoto amagi was born with a sixth sense. she's always had the ability to see small glimpses of the future, tell when someone is lying, and hear... not exactly ghosts, but fragments of people's souls that they leave behind when they die. due to this, she was always treated as gifted by the adults in her life, though this also meant she found it difficult to relate to her peers. however, her connection to the realm beyond proved to be a curse, slowly eroding her physical body and leaving her bedridden by age 10, forcing her parents to pull her out of school. she died by the age of 13, but that same curse tethered her consciousness to the mortal realm and prevented her from fully passing on, forcing her to become a ghost (or, more specifically, a yūrei) and adopt the name mana.

around that time, she met masaru fuzaki, a powerful sorcerer of the esteemed fuzaki bloodline who chose to forsake his family name and live a humble life as an apothecary in the forest. masaru took pity on the young ghost and decided to make her his familiar, allowing her to take residence in his attic and vowing to find a way to bring her back to life, all the while selling potions and enchantments and occasionally taking commissions to slay monsters in order to support them both. mana spends the majority of her time eating, sleeping, playing video games, and watching anime and youtube videos because it takes her a significant amount of energy just to maintain a corporeal form, let alone do much else, but she does make herself useful to masaru from time to time by foraging for ingredients for his elixirs or using her gift of foresight to aid him in combat.

mana is a tsundere, making a point of insisting that she's scary, not cute, and getting flustered and pouty at the slightest hint of physical or verbal affection, but she's also rather cheeky and mischievous, often playing pranks or attempting to scare masaru, though no matter how hard she tries, he remains largely unfazed.

i use mana as a vtubersona and a hololive and nijisanji self-insert. i do ship her romantically with masaru, but when it comes to the ships between her and other vtubers (namely gawr gura, pomu rainpuff, ike eveland, elira pendora, and a few others), i may disregard or alter parts of her lore in order to be more in line with theirs or even scrap it altogether in favor of saying, “she's a ghost and they work for the same company. that's all you need to know.”

please keep in mind that when i talk about my vtuber f/os, i'm referring to the characters and not the people behind the screen.

rimi: rimi sonozaki is a responsible, yet rebellious 16-year-old girl who likes skateboarding, singing, playing the guitar, and punk, emo, and street fashion. her mom is the typical strict single asian parent who disapproves of her daughter's interests and has unreasonably high expectations for her. compared to mana, her lore isn't particularly deep.

i use rimi as a sk8 the infinity, persona 5 (+ strikers), skip to loafer, and naka no hito genome self-insert and ship her romantically with reki kyan, langa hasegawa, miya chinen, akira kurusu, ryuuji sakamoto, ann takamaki, narumi kanechika, anya kudou, and yuzu roromori. she's also friends with makoto niijima, yuusuke kitagawa, haru okumura, sophia, mitsumi iwakura, yuzuki murashige, mika egashira, makoto kurume, akatsuki iride, and himiko inaba, and has a crush on sousuke shima. in addition, she sees hiromi higa, sojiro sakura, zenkichi hasegawa, and nao iwakura as familial/guardian-like figures.

in persona 5, rimi is a persona user of the temperance arcana. her code name is vandal and her phantom thief attire resembles a graffiti artist with a gas mask. she wields a hunting knife as a melee weapon and dual smgs as a ranged weapon. she can also throw colorful smoke bombs or firecrackers to create a diversion. however, i haven't decided on an actual persona for her yet.

in skip to loafer, rimi is a member of the drama club.

in naka no hito genome, rimi is a streamer who specializes in gacha games.

vivi: vivi is a 14-year-old gym leader from aurea (my fanmade pokémon region based on italy) who specializes in ghost types. both of their parents died one right after the other when vivi was very young, and as a result, a lot of nasty rumors began to spread throughout their hometown that they were somehow responsible due to how scary and offputting they appeared on the surface, leading them to become a shut-in and turn to video games as a form of escapism. they met their first pokémon, a shiny mimikyu, at the cemetery whilst visiting their parents' graves. eventually, they grew tired of hiding from the world and applied for an international scholarship to uva academy in paldea.

i use vivi as a pokémon violet self-insert and ship them romantically with arven and queerplatonically with nemona, penny, and giacomo. in addition, they see director clavell and mr. hassel as fatherly figures of sorts and eri as an older sister figure.

penny: penelope "penny" st. ives is a laid-back, tomboyish, and slightly reckless steampunk inventor/engineer/mechanic who uses guns and explosives in lieu of magic. her lore is pretty much nonexistent beyond that.

i use penny as a devil may cry 5 and tensei shitara slime datta ken oc and and ship her romantically with dante, vergil, and veldora tempest and queerplatonically with nero, rimuru tempest, and milim nava.

in devil may cry 5, penny replaces nico goldstein as the person who drives the van and makes nero's devil breakers.

sam: sam warner, a.k.a. sam the hunter, is a transmasc vigilante of sorts who kills bigots and politicians, but i haven't quite figured out his full lore yet.

i use sam as a creepypasta (slender mansion au) oc and ship him romantically with ticci toby and queerplatonically with nina the killer. additionally, he sees masky as an older brother figure and sally williams as a little sister figure and is also friends with ben drowned, homicidal liu, and kate the chaser, but doesn't get along with jeff the killer.

skye: skylar "skye" mitchell is a very optimistic, albeit naïve girl fresh out of high school who landed her first job as a daytime security guard at the mega pizzaplex and wants nothing more than to be besties with all of her coworkers. she's extremely strong, having done both gymnastics and jiu-jitsu when she was younger, but despite this, she dreams of going into the beauty industry one day, and thus, takes great care of her appearance, tying her hair up in all manner of intricate ways and painting her nails all manner of fun colors and patterns. she's pretty good with kids due to having experience babysitting her younger cousins and second cousins, but she has no desire to have any biological kids of her own. she also has a very tiktok sense of humor and uses a lot of gen z slang, which makes vanessa feel extremely out of touch.

i use skye as a five nights at freddy's: security breach (human performer au) oc and ship her queerplatonically with both of the daycare attendants. she's also friends with glamrock chica and dj music man, has a small crush on glamrock freddy, and looks up to vanessa in spite of the fact that vanessa finds her annoying.

while mana has the most complex lore by far, i'd say she's the character whose experiences and personality most closely mirror mine (gifted kid burnout, feeling depressed/isolated after having to be pulled out of school, etc.), but most, if not all of my ocs share certain traits (being autistic, biromantic, trans or nonbinary, having a sweet tooth, and liking video games, anime, music, plushies, and/or alt fashion).

i also use futaba sakura, lumine, hu tao, millie parfait, and a few other canon characters as self-inserts because i kin them.

this is a difficult question to answer because again, i have several s/is and ocs across several different sources, i don't have all the details of all of their stories worked out yet, and most of what i write takes place after the relationship has already been established.

My anime recommendations for this month, Part 2!

• Bubble

In a Tokyo where gravity has broken, a boy and a girl are drawn to each other... The story is set in Tokyo, after bubbles that broke the laws of gravity rained down upon the world. Cut off from the outside world, Tokyo has become a playground for a group of young people who have lost their families, acting as a battlefield for parkour team battles as they leap from building to building. • Nakanohito Genome [Jikkyouchuu] / The Ones Within

Iride Akatsuki has unlocked hidden content in the game he's playing, 'Nakanohito Genome,' and it turns out that this content is a real-life game! He soon wakes up to find that he has been kidnapped and taken to a strange place, along with a number of other teammates. Each of them specializes in a certain sort of game, like cultivation games, fighting games, puzzle games, etc. A llama-headed 'teacher' gathers them after level 1 is cleared to explain how the game will proceed. Will this group of gamers succeed, and make it back to their real lives?

—This ask is so cute..? Thank you so much for the request..! I never thought I’d ever do some parents hcs, but hey, I was never going to deny them..! I’ve decided to write this as them being single dads. If you wanted some cute family hcs, I’m sorry and feel free to request again..!

Kakuzu’s side ended up being a little longer, and I am so sorry, I wrote him a little redemption arc in this.

KISAME

Kisame is put off by the idea of a baby. Sure, he did have the usual silly dreams of raising a family, but now that he was a part of the Akatsuki and a wanted man? Dragging a baby into all of it didn’t sit right with him.

And then, he actually saw his new baby girl and he was all over her. He wouldn’t let anyone hold her, much less even touch her. Not even Itachi, the one person Kisame trusted more than himself, was allowed to hold his new baby.

He would want nothing else than to settle down in a house and raise his new girl properly but his job and his wanted status leaves that as a mere pipe dream.

But it doesn’t stop him from caring for his baby girl. He picked up a baby carrier and while on travels, he carries her on his chest. But he also likes having his cloak zipped up. He adjusted the carrier to hoist her higher up on his chest so he can close his cloak. It leaves him looking goofy with his cloak zipped up two-thirds way up with his baby girl’s babbling face peering out from inside the cloak.

Now that he and Itachi were travelling with a child no older than 12 months, Kisame insisted they stop every night to let his baby get some proper sleep. Itachi doesn’t oppose this, he understands that Kisame needs to properly care for her. Besides, it lets Itachi get some proper rest.

He’s a very doting father, actually. During the evening stops, he rests his baby girl on his legs and showers her in attention; blowing raspberries into her stomach, cooing at her, snuggling his forehead against hers— anything to get her to giggle and coo.

Kisame is also a very emotional father. The first time he heard her laugh, he cried tears of joy. When she babbled out “Dada” for the first time, it was the highlight of his life. Her first step? Kisame was swinging his baby girl in the air like the proud papa he was.

When on missions, he drops off his baby girl at a daycare or at least hides her away when he has to fight, not the safest of ideas but when your job calls for out-of-the-blue fights, Kisame would rather her be hiding behind a tree playing with a toy rather than strapped to his chest.

KAKUZU

When his s/o spoke those two words, “I’m pregnant”, Kakuzu stood up and dropped her a stack of money before leaving. He didn’t want to be bothered with how expensive a child actually is, especially when a kid gave him nothing to gain.

Karma caught up to him a year later when he and Hidan spotted someone chasing after them. Just before Hidan killed their pursuer, she pointed to the blanket-covered basket behind her. It was for Kakuzu.

It turned out to be a baby carrier with a 6-month-old baby sleeping peacefully. A note was tucked to the side with his name angrily scribbled across the top.

Through his ex’s messy and angry scribbles she called “handwriting”, he managed to discern that she had enough of motherhood and no one wanted the baby girl. So instead of letting the thing die, she decided it was best to give the baby to him. Because that clearly was just the much more better option.

Kakuzu would pick up his baby under her chubby arms, and it was beyond obvious she was his. Genetics and appearance-wise, she was a daddy’s girl. Black hair, dark-skinned, and when she opened her eyes, she had his eyes, green irides and red sclerae. She was practically a replica of him.

He wouldn’t be a good father at first. He wasn’t a loving parent, he’d see his kid as a bother, something that got in his way. But he wasn’t neglectful or abusive. He’d keep his baby fed, changed and on a proper sleep schedule. The bare minimum of being a parent, that’s all he does, outside the whole loving thing.

The Akatsuki found out he was a father when extracting a Tailed Beast, when she had started crying out of hunger. Her cries were heard through his hologram which left everybody questioning why the fuck the Zombie Combo had a baby. Kakuzu was eventually forced to leave the sealing process to tend to your needs every once and a while. Those three days, now extended to four days, felt like three months because of how much he had to stop.

Pain had insisted that Kakuzu give up his baby, but for some reason, Kakuzu couldn’t just let go. Which was odd. His baby girl got in the way of his work, he had nothing to gain from her, she didn’t make him any sort of money. So why couldn’t he just let go?

His prayers for answers were answered when he was recounting his money. She had nabbed some cash off the table and just as he was about to pry it out of her chubby little hands, he watched as she aimlessly flipped through the money, imitating him whenever he counted his stacks of money. She, only being 8 months, probably didn’t understand what the hell she was doing but as she played with his cash, it pulled at Kakuzu’s heartstrings.

And that became their way of bonding. Everytime he and Hidan completed a bounty, Kakuzu would sit down, plant his baby girl in his lap and let her play with counted stacks of money while he did the actual counting.

He doesn’t trust Hidan with his kid. And rightfully so. Hidan protested at the idea of dragging a baby around and always glared over at her whenever he could. Kakuzu will let others touch and hold his baby girl, sometimes he’ll excitedly push her into someone else’s arms so he can have a break. But Hidan is the biggest no-no. Something tells him that if given the chance, Hidan would punt his kid into the sun. Kakuzu isn’t losing his baby girl because his dumbass partner chucked her into the sun.

He pulled the mask down from his face, even though it would mean exposing him to the pollen. It was fine though, he had allergy pills at home. "My name is Akatsuki by the way. Akatsuki Iride."

“Akatsuki is a very pretty name, this is so.” Kanata was looking relatively pale, something that would naturally be relatively difficult to tell if you didn’t know him properly. He was dripping wet, but as this was Kanata, that fact wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Rather, he had a bottle of water next to him, and it wasn’t for drinking, but for dousing himself whenever he felt he became too dry... 

“I did not want to be alone but I did not think anyone would actually pick up on that, so... You are very kind, Akatsuki.” Normal people would have called him Iride-kun... “Ah. I am... Kanata...? Shinkai. Yes.” He picked up the water bottle and drizzled a bit of the water down his front. Yes, much better.

“Thoughts... And your mind... They are not your very best of friends sometimes so the company of other minds... Other voices... They brighten gloomy overcast skies that you carry within... You brightened my skies by simply staying here, this is so.”

most of you guys hc him as gay or bi because of the ship with akatsuki iride. then, others acknowledged the fact that he seems to have no sexual attraction to girls. like, in that hot springs episode where all the guys were flustered of thinking about the girls, but he didn’t care at all. some say ‘oh that’s because he’s gay’. while some came up with a new hc of him being asexual. and i respect both fanons, but here’s something i thought of which i haven’t seen around yet.

might be a little bit of a stretch, but he does mention a lot about not having preferences (which, guess what? pansexuality is attraction regardless of gender or no preference). so, it kind of makes sense.

Naka no Hito Genome Theory (building on what’s been said so far)

Akatsuki is Himiko’s brother who was put up for adoption, eventually he ends up in the Iride household and gets involved in the Mimicry Project, through Akito-san (?) (Iride’s father-in-law and Niki’s brother-in-law). Yuzu probably knew him when he was still Akira which is why she calls him Aki. Akira was probably in a romantic relationship with Yuzu’s older sister (the ghost in the first game, kokkuri-san). Yuzu may be attached to him because of this or she was already in love with him even as he was in a relationship with her older sister. The point of collecting the chromosomes is to revive Yuzu’s older sister (who was burned through some accident in the past), basically build a new human being through the Mimicry plants and all of the games thus far were experimental tests. Still on the fence on whether or not Akira really lost his memory or is playing the rest of the 13th Avenue to get what he wants. If that’s the case, it really is a controversial experiment Paca-san and his gang are doing because it involves reviving a dead human or building something like a homunculus. Maybe Paca-san is actually Akito-san in disguise.

The other night I found some family hcs I typed up forever ago so I guess I should post them here, they’re under the cut.

Mika's Parents -His dad's name is Takahiro and his mom's name is Akari. -His parents are very supportive of his dream, which is why they were okay with him going to Yumenosaki and even moving in with Shu so he wouldn’t have to travel so far everyday. He talks to them everyday through texting, though it’s mostly his mom since his dad can barely use his phone. -He was adopted when he was 8 years old. -Akari and Takahiro had tried for many years to have a child until tests confirmed that Akari was infertile. They were both heartbroken but decided to adopt since they really wanted a kid. -It took Mika a while to call them mom and dad instead of Mrs. and Mr. Kagehira. He also seemed unsure of how to act at his new home and would frequently ask if it was really okay for him to stay there.

Rei and Ritsu's Parents -Their mom's name is Miyo and their dad is Naito -They are very wealthy. They live in a huge, old-styled house. -They aren't the best parents but they aren't the worst either, just a tad bit neglectful. They let Rei stay out late and do as he pleases, which is pretty much every teenagers dream. They never gave Ritsu much attention, especially as he got older. -They had Rei as their heir, but they didn't really want Ritsu. Miyo actually wanted a girl and was disappointed that Ritsu was a boy.

Subaru's Parents -His dad's name is Ren and his mom's name is Yukiko. -When his dad was imprisoned, he and his mom were shunned by everyone, to the point they had to move to try and get away from it all. -Yukiko use to love idols just as much as Subaru did. But after Ren's death, she couldn't feel as excited about them anymore. -Yukiko had a hard time finding a job after Ren's death. Right now she works at convience store close to her house.

Arashi's Family -Arashi's dad is Hiroto, their mom is Tamako and their older brother is Mitsue. -Tamako is way more understanding about Arashi's gender identity than Arashi's father and brother. -Hiroto and Mitsue don't really accept Arashi as genderfluid. But since she accepts he/him pronouns it doesn't bother her too much. -Her mom is a model and the one who got Arashi into the modeling industry. -Tamako is also very supportive of Arashi's idol career and goes to see all of Knights' performances

Mao's Family -His dad's name is Asahi and his mom's name is Hana. His little sister's name is Yui. -His parents don't really care about him, they care more about his sister than him. Mao does his best to not let it bother him. -His little sister is very bratty and always gets what she wants. Despite that, Mao still cares about her, since they are family.

Kaoru's Family -His dad is named Seiichi, Mom is named Chika, brother is named Yukio and his sister is named Hotaru. -Like known in canon, Kaoru's mom is dead and his dad isn't the best. -His dad is a horrible parent to Kaoru. He treats Kaoru much differently than he treats Kaoru's siblings. -He's also very homophobic, which is why Kaoru is so adamant to claim he is straight. -Kaoru has a wonderful relationship with his sister, they get along really well. He and his brother are more on neutral terms.

Akatsuki's Parents -His mom's name is Maki. -Akatsuki (formerly known as Akira) was adopted when he was a young child by the Iride couple after their biological son Akatsuki died due to health complications. -His adoptive dad was supposedly killed in a laboratory accident. The accident left his mom more traumatized and unstable which leads to her sanity breaking down. -Akira's mom becomes unable to distinguish between him and her late son. She even went as far to suggest Akira gets a name change and he surprisingly agreed. -Although his mother is seemingly delusional and mentally unbalanced, Akatsuki loves his mother dearly and does not see her as a nuisance or burden. -Paka is Akatsuki's adoptive father. Akatsuki is unaware of this. (This comes from a theory I found, I really like the idea) *It is also hinted that Akatsuki is Himiko's older brother that was given up for adoption.

Hibiki's Parents -His mom's name is Utano and his dad's is Yuichi -Hibiki's parents were very negligent. They never paid attention to him as a kid and were always away at work. They expected Hibiki to have good grades though, but all the studying caused Hibiki to get bullied. -Daichi's parents were more of parents to him than his actual mom and dad. They would often let Hibiki stay at their house and would even make sure he was eating properly. -Hibiki didn't even care or wonder about his parents during the apocalypse. He was more willing to help Daichi and Io try to get home to see their parents rather than check on his parents.

Anime Spotlight - The Ones Within

I enjoyed this series as it was full of quirky characters and an intriguing premise and mystery. The down side it has a very anime ending and none of the mysteries are solved but I live in hope it means another series.

The plot is a series of strange disappearances have been occurring throughout Japan, and despite the police's efforts, no leads have been found apart from the fact that all of the victims were youths. Akatsuki Iride, a friendly and amicable teenage boy, is a popular uploader of "Let's Play" videos, one of his latest uploads consisting of an F2P game called "The Ones Within - Genome". Although online rumours claim that the game causes anyone who clears it to disappear, Akatsuki is wholly unaware until the rumours prove true -- he is summoned to a completely different world, and meets other teenagers like him: Karin Sarayashiki, Kaikoku Onigasaki, Himiko Inaba, Anya Kudou, Yuzu Roromori, Zakuro Oshigiri and Makino Aikawa. The eight teenagers are welcomed into what is known as the 13th Avenue, headed over by a strange man with an alpaca mask calling himself "Paca", and are informed of their task: to work together in clearing stages of the game and retrieving the "chromosome", a keycard-like token of completion, to subsequently reach 100 million viewers in this livestream where death and injury can all occur. Resistance is not tolerated; those who do are imprisoned in what is known as the "White Room" to wait alone for the rest in the Avenue to complete the game. Henceforth begins their trials in clearing this game, but what lies in wait for them is not only dangerous obstacles, with each member having a hidden past and dark secrets of their own.

So not as harsh as I like and not as game of death as I thought it was but still a like the idea of characters having to get a certain amount of views. It was doing a lot of world building and hunting at the back stories of the characters and things not being as they seem. I like a social commentary anime and though its done better in Classroom of the Elite this still remains a fun series and I really liked the characters and their relationships. I really want to know more about the world, the backstory, who or what is Alpaca.
