Hello! Yes 😂 I have been a Fall Out Boy fan for a very long time and was inconsolable when they went on their hiatus and was insufferable when they came back with Save Rock and Roll - I'll never forget being in history class and sneaking out into the hallway to listen to My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark as soon as it was released. Pete Wentz is also one of the writers I look up to the most even though he does primarily write lyrics these days. There is something about how he puts words together that just makes my brain go !!!

To answer your question: I read a LOT of bandom RPF (and if I'm being honest I still do 💀) and I did dabble with writing some of my own in my youth, however I never actually posted any of it (which is for the best it was very much not good lol) I also used to really like All Time Low when I was younger - but honestly feel really weird about them now because of all the scandal stuff and kind of just avoid them now. They are no longer the vibe in my opinion. However the Merry Christmas Kiss My Ass thing was too perfect not to use after I wrote that one shot and was trying to come up with a title lol

Favorite colors - Definitely changes. Lately I've been loving sort of desaturated midtones--sage green, mustard, rust, etc. I'd say my long-running favorite is purple, but right now I'm favoring, you guessed it, a desaturated midtone purple. I think of it as "Kate Bishop purple," lmfao.

Currently watching - The Stanley Cup Final series! In terms of like, narrative stuff, I keep meaning to start s2 of Heroes. Uhhh, and technically I'm in the middle of a rewatch of s1 of The X-Files as well, though I haven't watched any in like a couple months at this point.

Spicy/savory/sweet - Sweet for sureeeee. I am a big sweet/salty combo person, though. I am unfortunately the tiniest whitest baby w/r/t spicy food, which is like the one trait I would actually change about myself in a heartbeat if I had access to some sort of Create A Sim function IRL.

Relationship status - I have one romantic partner at the moment and, eh, 2-3 (occasional/not regular) sexual partners, as well as a couple of platonic play partners on the kink side. I'd classify all of those as pretty casual relationships, though. (I swear it's not as wild as it sounds? Or maybe I'm just blinded to the insanity of poly relationship diagrams at this point, IDK.)

Current obsessions - Well, definitely FOB's new festival set, but also, I've been on a Taking Back Sunday kick lately. And in the past couple of weeks, I've been reading hockey RPF for the first time in literal years, with a whole smorgasbord of ships that didn't even exist last time I was in hrpf space (Lars/Dunn, Hischier/Hughes, Tkachuk/Draisaitl... of course I go back to my ol' reliable Benn/Seguin too because I am a simple man with predictable tastes).

Understand that proshippers are the only reason RPF is still allowed anywhere. After all the harm RPF shippers have done to the subjects of their ships( 1D fandom was a nightmare) , places would absolutely have banned RPF if there weren't content - neutral policies blocking that. Policies fought for by proshippers who saw queer content getting banned at a frightening rate by the big sites. No one's saying you have to ship things you don't like. But proship is a political stance that people should be allowed to ship what they want. If proship ever loses power, RPF will be the first thing to go, not the last

so not only do i not ship RPF i think you are. quite simply wrong. but lets start with the most important:

i support the right for Everything to be created. i do not think there should be any platform- namely Ao3- that should prevent the creation of ANY content, unless it is genuinely endangering the lives of people. that being said i do NOT have to interact with people who create content revolving around incestuous or pedophilic content.

I can recognize the importance of allowing that content to exist while also not wanting to surround myself with or support people who make such content. i do not personally believe in the "it's just fiction" argument, as either way, you're still viewing children in that manner, you're still viewing sibling relationships in that matter, and so on.

and i also do not believe the RPF argument. i DO agree that RPF fandoms have created a lot of problems for a lot of people. fuck i was a fan of two people who pretended to be cousins for like FIVE YEARS. because shippers wouldn't leave them alone. (ironically enough being cousins didn't stop it.) however i do NOT THINK ITS PROSHIP KEEPING IT ALIVE?? especially not on tumblr or twitter or ao3 like what the fuck.

if you think those mfers writing hockey rpf or the people making rpf nascar edits or dan and phil. are thanking people who write about brothers fucking then you're wrong ?

Generally, I'd like to write that I wanted to thank those Lando fans who adopted Oscar from the very beginning and who now cannot imagine another McLaren line-up for the coming years. <3

I wish that McLaren will provide them with a car that will help this team get back to the top, because I know that with this line-up it's possible.

we are so spoiled <3 esp since Lando has said before that he can see even more of a future for himself with McLaren after the upgrades this past season.

so many promising things are coming McLaren's way for 2024 and genuinely y'know seeing how Oscar and Lando have weathered what pre-Silverstone 2023 was I'm not going to feel on tenterhooks if there are bumps in the road. every time someone talks about/links to fic (ANY fic, not just RPF!) in non-fandom spaces, I think about TardisIsTheOnlyWayToTravel, who deleted all 380 of their fics on AO3 because people won't stop linking to them from GoodReads. despite many entreaties over the years to not do so! but people still did it! and it makes me so mad because it's so easy to NOT post about fic and discuss fic on GoodReads, but NO, they HAD to use that platform and not, say, Tumblr or discord, or whatever. some people really don't know, or care to know, why it's a good idea to not discuss fic outside of fannish spaces actually 😤

eons ago I found some deleted pens fics recced on goodreads, with download links even though the author had clearly wanted to wipe their fics off the face of the earth. it's disheartening, and also ... strange ... to put fics on goodreads, of all places.

(I blame wattpad [I always blame wattpad] because it appears wattpad readers call fics "books," which is confusing to me! apparently some of the works on wattpad are original fiction, but nonetheless: a fic is not a book, and goodreads is for books, not fics)

my issue w/ the tiktoks abt HRPF is that it's exposing our #niche #fandom #interest to people outside of said niche fandom interest and blurs way too many lines.

we already have romance novel readers commenting "😍 BOOKTOK NEEDS TO FIND THIS!" under videos on the kraken's official account, where they're literally begging in public TO the organization that they want fictionalized smut about these players (as face-grabs or stand-ins for romance novel characters), which is (imo) crass !!

we do not need Everyday Random People (some of which are hockey fans, as the algorithm is feeding them content they like, and this nominally counts as hockey content) being introduced to HRPF, especially by a person who—while familiar with fandom—is not familiar with HRPF's struggles with the fourth wall over the years [READ THE FANLORE ARTICLE ON IT].

and man... we aren't a big fandom. we seriously aren't. like yes, we're the largest sports fandom [even though men's football RPF is coming in CLOSE with 30,061 fics and F1 is gaining on us with 22,504 fics] but look at us compared to actually big fandoms on ao3:

star wars: 230,985 fics sherlock: 147,728 fics marvel: 628,295 fics kpop: 584,096 fics spn: 277,618 fics minecraft: 106, 521 fics

in hockey we have a humble 32,180 fics.

we're not even cracking six digits! we're not even HALFWAY to six digits! I feel we punch above our weight when it comes to fic quality by-and-large, but we are not a big fandom. when we get 26,300+ people seeing a tiktok about it... it's weird. it feels exposing! I sure as fuck don't want my fics plastered over the roulette of the internet.

my initial take would be that all these people scare me so much I don't want to get into it but also people keep messaging me to be like did you know people ship carlando" off the back of it and yes. I did know that.

my understanding of what's happened on booktok, which I absorb any information about only twice a year during whatever version of this is blowing up at the time, is pretty limited. partly because I'm not on tiktok and partly because I can't read. but the crux of it seems to have come down to people writing disgustingly thirsty comments on a hockey player and his wife's posts, regardless of what they were about, somehow feeling empowered to be horny not just on main but in someone's face because of booktok.

that's, clearly, not remotely acceptable. if there are communities of people out there that thirst about me I don't know about them (although the cold tendrils of horror about the Wikifeet page have just gripped me and no, oh god, that isn't the phrase I should've used at all get me out of here) but there are loads of people who fucking hate my guts. that's like, fine, it's their own business; if they keep it on discord or whatever and away from me it doesn't do me any harm. lord knows, I have committed the act of hating and indeed being horny, sometimes simultaneously, when I was at a safe enough distance for none of the subjects to ever know.

this is a thing about fandom. if you post "Max Verstappen looks breedable" on here then he's extraordinarily unlikely to ever see it or probably know what it means. if you comment that on Kelly's instagram posts, even if you don't like her and even if that's for valid reasons, that's very different.

as I gather it, the booktok thing has exploded into RPF in general. which, I gotta say, RPF and sexually harassing a dude and his family are in fact very different things. one has a rich history, both as actual ways of telling history (Anthony and Cleopatra: RPF, Chernobyl: RPF, the god damn Gran Turismo movie is RPF about an uncomfortably large number of people I know IRL and to be fair it looks like it slaps I'm gonna see it) and as a longstanding artform. RPF's history of horny is even extremely longstanding, with obscene RPF being used by both the French and Russian revolutionaries to undermine the concept of royal divinity.

RPF is political because it involves an interpretation of real events and people. and the perspective from which that's written will always be political. RPF can, certainly, be feminist; there's quite a lot of retellings of classical stories that fit this. RPF can, also, be fucking weird horny shit. or terrible man takes. or incredible, tender, queer retellings; Kaz Rowe's graphic novel about real-life surrealist Claude Cahun is an obvious example of the latter. Pride, the film about the miners' strikes and the AIDS crisis, is another.

so yeah, it is a legitimate and recognised form of literature and art and also uhhhh. well. I mean the omegaverse is definitely recognised, legally, in court because of that one case but I don't know that even its fiercest enthusiasts would really be all that keen on describing it. not as like, literature or anything just I think most people would rather literally never have an IRL conversation about that. ever.

I'm not 1000% clear on how carlando got into this but clearly that's broken containment a long time ago anyway. when you had Sky doing love heart interviews 15 races into them being teammates or whatever, there was an obvious amount of gay chicken being played by the producers that frankly, as a queer person in motorsport, I'm a lot more comfortable with the fan version of.

no, obviously, I do not think they are dating - or want to think that tbh - but frequently-queer fans projecting the wish fulfilment of seeing a kinder and more representative world for their desires, in places hidden from the subjects, is a lot less weird than leering, laughed-at dating questions and milk baths. in an ideal world it wouldn't have to be a secret, yearned-for alternative because things would be safe and open enough for there to be real queer stories everywhere but that, unfortunately, is not the one we currently live in.

wish fulfilment and telling stories are not the same things, necessarily. sometimes you tell the stories to remind yourself it's ok to have wishes or to work out what those even are. I don't think there's anything necessarily harmful about what names the characters have in those, provided the line between reality and any real people's privacy is kept.

clearly, with the booktok thing, that's where things went extremely wrong. generally tiktok as a whole seems to have a very odd perception about other people's agency, whether it's pranking videos or like the girl who filmed people peeing at Spa. if you regard everyday people as content opportunities (spoiler: the law does not think this and particularly in the EU you cannot film people without their consent) then I guess it's easy to slide over to seeing an athlete as a target for what I suspect very few of the people doing it recognised as very unpleasant and invasive harassment.

there's nothing wrong with fancying athletes. there's nothing even wrong with sexualising them, provided you respect some boundaries and provided it's not part of the conditions of their working contracts. there's a lot of difference between there being a discord where, idk, people say Mitch Evans is hot (he is, although somewhat implausibly he genuinely does not know this) and sponsors for female tennis players wanting them to wear revealing outfits and stay skinny or teenage girls being encouraged into provocative photoshoots by people who promise them roles, etc. teenage male athletes being pressured into doing things they don't want to yet or maybe at all to prove they're men, queer athletes being forced to hide who they are or repress it entirely.

would it be a little bit odd to find RPF of yourself? yes. I won't lie, I would judge the characterisation. I already do judge that on the frankly very weird things people write about me. you have never seen RPF as strange as the narratives people will make up about you in the comments of an article about hydrogen and frankly those scare me a lot more than whether someone thinks I'd be assigned beta or whatever.

stumbling across something, rather than having explicit sexual fantasies forced into your face, especially on what's your own social media pages where people you know in real life can see them, is very different though. some people who engage with RPF cross lines, whether that's weird conspiracy stuff about girlfriends being faked or stalking people's friends accounts etc.

RPF doesn't inherently cross lines, even when it's public; there's a very interesting interview here with Jann Mardenborough and the guy who plays him in the Gran Turismo movie about, among other things, portraying a fatal crash he was involved in. clearly, Jann is not only aware of but is the executive producer of what's ultimately fiction about himself and there's an ownership there, of course. but some parts of the movie are made up, for sure.

obviously I'm like, the not-very-secret infiltrator here because clearly I am On Tumblr and know what AO3 is. I follow a bunch of people who write fanfic because they also make nice gifs of my favourite blorbos and I like to think we can all make peace with our own boundaries about that kinda thing. also I read every single Shane/Ryan fic in like 5 weeks and honestly, not going to apologise except to myself for persisting with a few that didn't pay off.

but like: you do not have to make RPF or any fandom activity unethical. the way you conduct yourself does that and some people step way out of line.

nobody knows. i'm not even joking!!!! maybe it was just a mix of the sabres vibes and being lonely alongside both being ontario guys and rookies together that brought them closer. but they're so tenderly in love that it is palpable to everyone, and they just click. one day, it all just happened.

sadly there is very minimal interaction between these two anymore, but they came into the NHL as rookies in 2017 and immediately became BEST friends playing together on the worst team in the league. they lived together and did everything together until tyson was traded away from colorado in 2022. jt has also now been traded away just recently.

6. erik johnson and gabe landeskog, hockey rpf

it’s 2011 and the youngest captain in nhl history gets drafted onto a team with a former number 1 prospect who has just been traded away from his initial team after injuring himself badly, and the two become tight instantly. LOTS of twitter banter occurs, and they play together for 11 years before winning a cup together! sadly, gabe has been out for a year after badly injuring himself during the 2022 playoffs, and ej just got traded away to buffalo, MEANING that the last game they ever played together was the game they won the cup….. sooo damn tragic and poetic

5. darius garland and donovan mitchell (spidaland), basketball rpf

they’ve only had one season together on the cavs, and sadly fell short in the playoffs, but they’re one of the best guard pairings in the nba for a reason, because they literally have soooooo much chemistry. also they’re ALWAYS touching each other????? like my camera roll is so full of pictures of them hugging

4. sebastian vettel and kimi räikkönen (simi), f1 rpf

they invented grumpy/sunshine. you can’t drive for ferrari and not get shipped with ur teammate i’m sorry it’s the rules! especially when you have a reputation for being as cold as ice but whenever you’re around him you start smiling… kimi ur not slick!

3. alain prost and ayrton senna (prosenna), f1 rpf

these two were INSANE. i’m a sucker for a tragic rivalry and they are nothing if not that. the chemistry, the tension, the way alain still talks about ayrton to this day, it all kills me. there’s so much about them we will never know and it drives me up the wall

2. nikola jokic and jamal murray, basketball rpf

these two oh my goddddd. might mansplain a bit here bc this is not a popular pairing at all — they were drafted to the denver nuggets in 2014 and 2016 respectively, nikola being a nobody from serbia who didn’t get picked until the second round, and jamal being a top 10 pick with all eyes on him. these two built this team on their backs, going from one of the worst teams in the league to finally winning the championship together in 2023 after facing a major setback when jamal tore his acl in 2021. the way they have so much trust in each other and have built a chemistry that has made them the best duo in the league is so dear to me :’) the dynamic is also spectacular - massive cynical european of little words and friendly but bratty short canadian who loves to have a laugh. i think the fact that i got to watch them grow together and that there’s like 5 other people in the world that ship them just make them sooo dear to me

1. lewis hamilton and nico rosberg (brocedes), f1 rpf

i literally have no words for these two 😭 i feel like i don’t need to explain that much either, because their story is so tragic and so out of a book that everyone already knows it. the intricacies of the way they destroyed each other will haunt me forever.

Buckle up anon. I thought about one line answering this but I enjoy the phrase 'lore drop' so much I think you deserve the deep dive. It'll take a while to get to the pens but you asked for lore so...

I have been sportsthoughts on tumblr since 2015 ish - maybe slightly earlier - and this has always been a sportsblr/sports rpf-y type blog in various iterations.

This blog was originally used for liveblogging UK Premier League and La Liga football matches. I have always been a huge football fan (my childhood team is Arsenal - north London forever ❤️ etc etc) and when I moved away to university at 18 none of my new friends were into sports and I really missed watching games with my family.

Finding other likeminded fans online who were also watching games and liveblogging them was such a beautiful experience and I have amazing memories of 2015-2018ish when I was a very active football blog, spent a lot of the time in the Arsenal/FC Barcelona communities here and had some beautiful trips to Barca.

I do have a sideblog where I still dabble in that space but in truth I very rarely liveblog football anymore because nowadays it's returned to being something I watch with friends and family so I'm not on my phone during games.

Here's where the pens come in - sort of. I've scrolled back through my AO3 bookmarks and can see in 2015 I also got into sports RPF for the first time. There are some incredible football RPF fics out there (let me know if you'd like some recs!). Somehow - probably through raiding people's bookmarks - in early 2015 I ended up reading a Sid/Geno fic called And Never Been Kissed and I was absolutely hooked. At the time of reading this I had:

1. Never watched a game of hockey in my life (side note, I don't think I can understate how little hockey coverage there is in the UK. Even the most ardent sports fan would probably not be able to name a single NHL player or team. Not even Sid! Not even Gretzky!)

2. I had no idea, nor any desire to look up who these people actually were. It was just like reading really well written original fiction.

For the next 7 years I thoroughly enjoyed hockey RPF and created (in my mind) entire personalities and appearances for Sid and Geno, along with all the other 'characters I came across regularly in hockey fic. Sid, I got pretty close to the mark. Geno, not so much. One day I will try and find some reference pictures for what I thought they looked like because it’s quite hilarious. When I re-read fics I love from during that time I laugh because I remember my Sid and Geno and how different they were from reality.

So, hockey was sort of in my life from 2015 but exclusively in the form of fics. I would scroll through the actual hockey bits of works because I didn’t understand the rules and why every single fic was an AU where professional sports people were allowed to fight each other mid game.

At this point I’d left university, and because I no longer liveblogged football games, I found I really missed sports fandom. Another sport I grew up watching and loving was Formula 1 so when lockdown hit in March 2020 I started liveblogging F1 races to pass the time (and still do sometimes - now over on @vroomlive). I loved/still love F1blr, but it didn't quite fill my fandom itch because:

1. We joke about it, but F1 is a deeply unserious sport run by a dire organisation (Liberty Media). They change the rules every week and it's managed badly to the point of being comical. There have been a few major cock ups over the years (including the 2021 championship literally being taken away from the rightful winner and given to someone else. To put this in hockey terms: imagine a completely valid goal being overruled in the last 5 minutes of the Stanley Cup final and then the ref deciding to give the other team a 5 on 3 powerplay Just Because) all of this is quite disheartening for long term fans - and has resulted in quite a fractured and angsty fandom.

2. There are only about 20 F1 races a year - so it's just not a sport that's on regularly. I love sports, and I want to watch sports all the time - so a sport that only gave me content every third weekend or so just wasn't really enough for me.

At this point, when I was feeling rather sports fandom bankrupt, the wonderful work of Sid/Geno writers and the influence of the tumblr dashboard converged. I worked this out by scouring my AO3 bookmarks - in April 2021 I read a Sid/Geno fic called Game Plan that I fell head over heels for. I’m still not quite sure what about this fic grasped me so deeply but I started reading a lot more hockey RPF.

Around the same time an F1 blog I followed started posting about Mat Barzal All. The. Time. I had no interest in this man and did not know he was a hockey player but over the course of about a year I became vaguely exposed to hockey content on Tumblr through that blog, and at some point in early 2022, saw Sid on my dash for the first time. I don’t remember the exact post but I remember seeing the name, doing a double take and thinking oh Shit! That’s Sidney Crosby from fanfiction! I was flabbergasted because in my mind Sid was in his early 20s tops, so seeing this early thirties, bearded, fat bottomed man on my dash and realising that that was Sid was such a shock. 

My hockey lurker era lasted from mid 2022 to early 2023 and I spent a lot of time, um, lurking. That sounds so creepy. I suppose I had never thought about actively joining a fandom before because my fandom engagement (one direction > football > f1) had all happened really organically so actually choosing to join a space as an adult was quite an interesting process.

By summer of 2023 my husband’s job changed again meaning he works away from home most weeknights and suddenly my late nights were extremely free because I’d hang out with friends and then go home at 10/11 to an empty house which I hated. I really found myself wanting to make fandom friends and have an at home hobby I could do late at night before going to bed so taking on a sport that happened 12am-2am (timezones!) seemed like a good fit. 

Alongside this on a totally separate track was my longstanding interest in fandom - most of my professional work/research is pretty standard psychotherapy stuff but I’ve done a little bit of work over the last few years looking at sex therapy (not as sexy as it sounds) and I have a real interest in the role that fandom and especially shipping/fic plays in shaping and expressing sexuality. It’s a bit of a back burner research topic for now but I suppose over the years researching fic and expressions of sexuality via fandom and shipping has just made me fall in love with fandom itself a little bit.

Plus having lurked around the edges of hockeyblr for a while I was just like, yeah, I really want in on this, this seems like an awesome community. The reason why I chose the pens was pretty straightforward - I felt like I knew Sid and Geno and after exploring the real life hockey, I, like most of us, was quite struck by who Sid is as a person and was just completely enchanted. Another side note - hilariously, when my husband first saw a picture of Sid last year he immediately said “Oh, he looks like me!” - do with that information what you wish. 

I really eagerly awaited the start of the 2023 season and without sounding too soppy, had already fallen in love with you guys before I ever watched a live hockey game. Every fandom has its difficult corners (pensblr included!) but I can honestly say - especially after the chaos of spending my teenage years knee deep in 1D fandom and my early and mid twenties in various parts of sportsblr - being part of this space has been the most lovely, fun, friendly, lighthearted, positive and beautiful fandom experience I’ve ever had. I feel like it’s the goldilocks zone of all the previous fandoms I’ve been in and I love it.

Would you ever/are you consider(ing) writing non Brock/Brods fics for the Wild (or any other hockeys?) Not a request, I'm just curious if any other little guys are on your mind or if you're more of a one ship at a time kind of writer! And for Brock/Brods, what drew you to them initially, and what made you pick up the pen (open the laptop, ramble into your voice to text notes app, etc) and write some fic about them?

so i've been a wild fan for like... four seasons now, they're my hometown team, but i never was into hrpf (or rpf generally) at all until this year. last season i migrated from mostly doing hockey fandom on reddit to getting involved in the tumblr community and it flipped some kind of horrible switch in my brain and now this is all i can do anymore. but like, last november, before i followed any hrpf people even, i independently came to the conclusion, "huh, isn't it kind of fucked up that brodin's d partner of like ten years just left, and now he has to take on that dude's replacement? i think they should kiss about it." the wording of my first post on this topic was literally "im not going to write this, but someone should."

anyway like three months later my life imploded and i discovered the hrpf side of the community (unrelated events) and i happened upon this post:

to answer your more pressing question no the way my brain works i can kind of only hyperfixate on one ship at a time and if im not fixated i can't write. other ships i like pretty well but not well enough to make content about include but are not limited to: kirill/zuccy, kirill/hootsy, hootsy/ohgren (niche rookie content right there), ekkie/boldy (with or without kirill in the mix) and sid/geno.

Previous writer anon here- full disclosure that I write for woso, which I somewhat scales with wbb in terms of popularity but I think has, for whatever reasons, a more old school fandom than wbb. I'm old enough to remember when rpf was exclusively the domain of locked livejournal communities and imo that's the level of lock and key it should still be under, but that mentality seems to have been lost in recent years. I have google alerts for a certain player that I also write fic about, and I cringe every time this website shows up in the results. I personally know for a fact that a very popular women's hockey player had to explain to her father what fic was when it showed up in his google alerts for her. I don't entirely know where I'm going with this but hopefully at least a little reassurance that there are some reasonable, privacy-minded people involved in writing too. I do my best to encourage younger writers to stay away from tumblr, keep their fics locked, etc. I hope there's similar voices in wbb. No one should have to see fic if they don't want to - it SHOULD be something you have to actively look for to find, especially with this level of relatively minor celebrity.

Sorry you're dealing with an outbreak of this stuff in your fandom. :\

I like you, writer anon, and appreciate your insights so much. I followed woso for a bit and knew of it there too but always tried to avoid it, though I will say there was definitely more of a respect level as far as I remember. many of those people just put ao3 links. perhaps it does come with age of fandom, idk. there is FOR SURE an influx of really young fans for wbb all of a sudden so I do think that's contributing to the lack of mindfulness about how easily accessible content like that is when you, well, make it that way. but yikes 😬would definitely suck if these wbb players had to explain that to family members or partners because a lot of the ones being written about suddenly are actually all married/in relationships. definitely what I meant by these people don't realize those posts go right into google search links/alerts. and I do think a lot of them probably think deleting it will get rid of that entirely. but hopefully, if this is what's going to stick around now with the WNBA fandom in particular, more respect minded people end up being the norm. the W has always been a small universe in reality and I do think it's much easier for the possibility of it reaching the subject of the content because of that, whereas I think it can get drowned out easier, like say with tv and movie stars. but you're right, you should have to actively look for it if that's the fandom content you want, rather than it just being out there in the open for literally anyone to be able to see.

thank you again for your insights, and maybe there will be someone who sees it and it all moves in a more respectful way, we'll see. but it's okay! I felt worse for that other anon because clearly they have their reasons why content like that is unsettling, but I'll still be here chugging along providing the content I do lol. come say hi again anytime :) have a good one!

i think the ability to be self-aware about your coworkerisms and find humor in it or even show fondness for it is really sweet... like to me it's meaningful that oscar followed lando's career for so long and clearly rates him and just sincerely objectively LOVES being his teammate and is satisfied with that alone because again "i'll have you in whichever way you'll have me" is lesbianism to some. it's also interesting when they're regarded as a pr bait ship especially considering how much mclaren like... Don't bait them to us that much anymore and how simple and stripped bare the content they post nowadays is? i think there's just a general conflation of [shares hobbies off-track] + [likes each other as people] in that regard...

fandom history is definitely so interesting, i've been in 132402382834 fandoms so i reflect on this a lot !!! i got into hockey like 10 years ago so i think just wrt like, the sporting aspect of f1 then i view it through that lens primarily (and hockey is a sport that's a lot just like... less Sympathetic to individual athletes because it's very explicitly about systems which i think is why i'm less like. parasocially invested in flop careers halsdfh), but when it comes to the celebrity consumption and sheer global influence of f1 then there are genuinely a lot of parallels to k-pop, which adds an interesting dimension. the thing about many other sports/esports/etc. fandoms is that not all of them have the same tenuous 4th wall + measure of exclusivity that f1's genz marketability propels itself off, which i think is where this accusation of 1d/k-popification comes from because it's a less familiar space in quite a few sports. but there's a lot of nuance there of course...

so random but i actually had this discussion with someone earlier where i was like my "type" in k-pop is always pathetic gayboys with horrible personalities alsfdkhalksdfh but in sports i like really adjusted normie boring straightguys (my 2 favorite hockey players are also very much Polite Cats who have cute nicknames hehe :3c) so it's interesting how despite certain fandom similarities there are many cultural nuances that influence our investment.

also idk if you're familiar with bbb but i thought i'd share the hockey version my friend made of it :') it's all quite interesting to me because hockey is like, MUCH more accessible as a fandom product just because of how many players major sports leagues have and the fact that it's not as successful in north america as any other league save mls (lol) (actually idk if this is still true with messi we might fr be flops now), so you can spend $20 to go to a game in some markets and see your favorite player up close during warmups whereas that... is not possible in f1. there's just a lot of considerations for how personas are built up & managed and the space f1 occupies in that analysis !!!!!!!! but i don't want to talk your ear off too much aklsdfhldfh thank you so much for your kind words! 🥺💕

as a writer (and a big disclaimer) | i also used rpf (hockey players & racers) as characters to fill up my stories. otherwise, i really like to write about a bunch of teenagers who like to save the world. it saves my addmind a lot of time to imagine a specific character. i sometimes write romance between them as a side-story but i'm more in the adventure/sci-fi/detective genres now. the hockey players in it are just a treat for me as it invokes nostalgia and/or they are literally a nod to my faves as players or racers.

Currently watching: My longstanding guilty pleasure is docs/commentary videos about any and all scams, particularly mlms/pyramid schemes. So it should come as no surprise that my brand new guilty pleasure is debt confessions/financial audits on youtube 🙈 I've been been watching a few by caleb hammer whose gimmick is that he gordon ramsey style shames people who come in with their financial records and he's like hey. why do you have $120,000 in consumer debt? why did you finance an ipad for your literal infant child?? why have you spent 30 dollars multiple times a day every day at dunkin for the last 3 months??? (the last one is an exaggeration but the first two I have seen LOL). His thumbnails are wretched I hate them so, so much, and his advice of living spartan-like for a few years to dig yourself out of the hole is ehhh maybe good in theory but generally not exactly...practical. And I think going cold turkey when you're used to constant impulse buying is basically a recipe for just eventually losing control and going on a bender. But. I'm nosy and love hearing about how people be spending their money so that's the best part of the videos for me lol

Currently reading: haven't picked up something new yet BUT I juuuust finished An Unauthorised Fan Treatise which was SO GOOD I literally slammed it nonstop for two days until I finished it. It's formatted like a rpf conspiracy theory livejournal where a fangirl of a supernatural-drama show compiles evidence that the two lead actors are secretly dating. BUT it's noted that the livejournal has been submitted as evidence into for a murder trial so y'know TWISTS AND TURNS lol. There's just something about the format that really compels me, idk I already love reading primers and conspiracies for hrpf couples that I literally have zero investment in and never will- I just enjoy the way the girlies spin a good narrative. (and also watching video essays about the uhhh less casual to super trainwreck ones like the whole larry fiasco even though I never got into 1D, as well as general fandom fiascos like msscribe and snapewives etc etc IT'S ALL SO FASCINATING TO ME 🍿👀) So it was a really natural fit for me to read in a fictional setting. My AO3 bookmarks have reached a critical mass and I can no longer find what I want when I want it.

So. Spring cleaning.

Since I’m making detailed bookmark notes as I clean shit out, I thought I would inflict them on other people. I’ve done this before and only need to make notes on the last couple of years of bookmarks so it will mostly be hockey rpf with a smattering of other fandoms.

I’m aiming for five fics a week, various pairings. Edit: lmao more like a couple a day until I hit the long ones.

I am also and always taking recs for new fics. I will literally read anything except Kane/Toews. No judgement. I just can’t.
