Okay actually, here are the only Bleach romance dynamics that matter

Urahara/Yoruichi except it’s strictly a friends with benefits situation while Yoruichi and Soi Fon are Divorced(TM) and Yoruichi and Soi Fon would go back to each other in a heartbeat if they actually Discussed Feelings

Grimmichi + Ichihime but specifically in a “Ah yes, me, my husband, and my husband’s six foot tall Hollow archenemy” type of way

Queerplatonic Ichiruki and queerplatonic Renruki. Rukia has two hands but neither of them are for romance, they’re for holding onto Ichigo and Renji’s backpack leashes

Yumichika/Ikkaku but specifically Yumichika is a homophobic gay and Ikkaku is convinced they’re just “guys being dudes”

Harribel/Nel but Harribel’s lesbian harem (Mila Rose, Sung Sung, and Appachi) are deeply in love with Harribel and pine after her in increasingly wet and pathetic ways

Aizen/Urahara but Aizen is just pissed he’s in love with Urahara and Urahara is completely oblivious while Yoruichi is eating popcorn

Renji/Uryu wherein they started making out when they were left alone one time and have no idea why and will never tell anyone

Orihime/Tatsuki wherein they were together the whole series and everything was resolved much quicker with Tatsuki around because she actually has a brain

Gin/Rangiku and everything is exactly the same as in canon except Rangiku was given the opportunity to punch him at least once

Basically romance in Bleach only works if it, and everyone involved, is supremely stupid

little things about hitsuhina and ginran I love (design-wise)

how kubo really designed them to be complementary

in the manga, rangiku’s hair is golden while gin’s hair is silver. even when they changed their hair color to strawberry blonde in the anime, they also changed her eyes from blue to silver-grey

even when gin defects, you have his white arrancar outfit with the aqua-blue sash, which complements rangiku’s black shihakusho and blush-pink scarf. it’s quite striking in the colored manga.  

the snake and virgin motif between the two of them, and even hades and persephone, I mean the both of them are also virgos (seriously the fact that they have the same birthday, and they count it on the day they met, they’re such soulmates)

the association of autumn and winter with the both of them (their favorite foods are dried persimmons, and rangiku most often remembers gin with snow)

you wouldn’t normally think that they have thematic links with their zanpakuto unlike say hitsugaya and hinamori with their ice and fire elements, but the fact that gin is also associated with foxes, and haineko’s hilt looks a bit like a fox is very cute to me (EDIT: Apparently, they do have a connection with their zanpakuto! Upon the reread, it seems that Shinsou’s bankai isn’t about how long or fast it contracts, rather it turns to dust for an instant, the moment it expands and contracts. Dust and Ash, wow. I don’t know if Kubo really planned all these out, but idc, I still love these bits and pieces.)

hitsugaya and hinamori are pretty obvious - smol to her tol, cold white snow to her earthy brown, ice and fire

despite hitsugaya’s element, I often associate them with spring and summer, especially since summer is when hinamori would visit home and they’d eat watermelon together

although both hitsugaya and rukia have ice as their element, their thematic connections with their respective childhood friends differ enough.

this is best reflected in hitsugaya’s and renji’s duet about their childhood friends. renji associates himself with dirt and being a stray, while he associates rukia with purity and the cleanness of snow. he’s a howling dog who longs for the moon, and one of rukia’s most famous attacks is tsukishiro or white moon. red and white are their colors.

hitsugaya meanwhile personifies the coldness of ice, while he considers hinamori’s smile and laughter to have been a “spring breeze” which warmed him

color-names and flower-names: there’s also slight symmetry as to their names. both gin’s and hitsugaya’s (or nick)names can refer to their hair colors (silver, white) while rangiku and momo’s names refer to flowers. rangiku or chrysanthemums are supposed to represent truth, and well we all know what gin is like. meanwhile, peach blossoms are spring flowers, while toshiro has the character for ‘winter’ in his first name. plum blossoms (or the ‘ume’ in tobiume), meanwhile, also bloom in late winter and early spring

They're long buried in the asks I never touch but I've had a few people ask me about if i ship anyone in bleach and for the most part I never answer because i don't, or the ones I do I do only very tepidly, and theyre all canon anyway so thats boring. But also the reason I don't is that I have a sort of broad distain for shipping as a practice --not as like some deranged antishipper horseshit(fuck those people) but just because I don't feel the impulse, and the impulse I do see in others always tends to seem predicated on grievous misreadings of the characters-- but that's a snooty beef to have with people so I don't voice my disagreements with specific/individual ships. That'd be rude.

But all that aside Bleach in particular does have one added layer to things... I think Bleach's narrative is kind of antithetical to shipping.

All of Bleach's canon relationships have this tragic and/or one-sided component that gives this really consistent tone that to love to to lose and to hurt. And honestly, given my personal opinion of Kubo's writing talent, I do think that's mostly incidental BUT I don't think there isn't some really interesting theming to take away from all that.

I've prattled on before about the Sun imagery in Bleach and how it seems to align with a lot of classically archetypal sun and light symbolism, as well as a few of its own unique symbolic uses: the sun gives light and warmth, its an icon of enlightenment, its the center of the galaxy around which other celestial bodies orbit, it's thus a power of attraction and order, and it's the brightest star in the sky. All of these aspects are either embodied or directly contrasted with major villains like Aizen and YHWCH as well as in Ichigo himself, and to much lesser degrees his mother, Masaki, and Shiba Kaien.

Masaki's death motivates Ichigo.

Rukia and Ichigo have a specifically platonic relationship built on mutually changing each other's lives

All throughout the body of the actual story, Orihime's feelings for Ichigo are one sided.

Uryuu's obvious unspoken feelings toward Orihime are likewise.

Renji likewise and even more explicit.

Rukia's with Kaien doubly so, with the added drama of him already having a wife AND her having to put him down herself.

Tousen's unspoken one sided love for his unnamed dead friend.

In a way Komamura's kind of sadly underdeveloped feelings about the whole Tousen betrayal.

Hinamori's tragically misguided adoration of Aizen.

Hitsugaya's one-sided puppy love crush on Hinamori.

Rangiku and Gin's fascinating, somehow mutually one-sided(?) romance.

Sui-Feng's beautiful "why didn't you take me with you?" tragedy with Yoruichi.

Ulquiorra's fixation on Orihime.

Riruka's extremely straight forward weaponized toxic love.

Even Ginjo and Tsukishima's lightly touched upon history together suggests a mix of overzealous devotion and deliberate grooming.

Aizen's forced obedience and abuse of his power over the Arrancar as a false Sun icon, generally more abstract but most literally manifested in Loly's jealous fangirl shtick.

And YHWCH's sinister manipulative exploitation of his followers devotion as an extension of the Sun symbol being its own kind of love, in the rather on the nose christofaciat/cultist sense.

Heck even Bazz-B and Juugram's melodramatic but kind of inconsequential relationship fits this.

Kanae and Ryuuken too I guess, but that's such a nothing romance b-plot inside of a nothing flashback, inside of nothing training arc anyway...

Like, the primary defining feature of all those relationships is the ways they don't work. The moment you make any of them reciprocal they lose the only point of interest they have. And consequently the whole of Bleach is fueled by the attractive force of one sided, unresolved, and otherwise doomed relationships.

And like I said, I don't actually give Kubo credit for that, but I think it creates a very apparent trajectory of a boy(Ichigo) forever changed by the loss of a loved one, his mother, the center of his universe trying to find a power that will allow him to hold onto those closest to him so he won't ever feel that loss again. And the power he's given is Rukia's, a power not just to fight and protect, but a power to influence and inspire. It's the power that bleeds out into Orihime and Chad, and even Tatsuki and Keigo, and Karin. It's the power that attracts them to him, and holds them in orbit as he unknowingly becomes that missing Sun, the center of a new universe all his own. And that creation of a new system of the divine around his solar self is the ascension toward godhood, both in that pseudo spiritual symbolism sense as well as literally in the story(at least until it abruptly and without explanation/clarification just isn't).

Point being, Bleach's only sensible reciprocal ship that I see is that of Ichigo as an ascended god shining a universal light of love and protection on all living things and their returning love for their God experienced/achieved in the flickering moment of my own headcanon climax of the series right before his friends all yank him back off the god throne and some deus ex machina(Urahara) solves the cosmic puzzle for them. That and Ikkaku×Yumichika.

I think Gin is definitely a snake. I mean for obvious reasons, but he's sneaky like a snake and moves in silence.

Byakuya's a wolf. He likes to be alone and fierce, but he needs his family to survive.

Yumichika is a peacock. Cocky and he knows he's beautiful.

Ikkaku is a bull. He loves to fight and isn't afraid to show it.

Shunsui is a bear. Big and cuddly, but very strong and deadly.

I feel like Jushiro is an otter. Let me explain myself 😭 Otters are really cute and spend most of their time sleeping, just like my man.

I feel like Toshiro is either an ice dragon, duh, or a porcupine. Porcupine's are small and cute, but will stab you if you try to pet him.

Soifon is definitely a black cat. Mysterious, but has claws if you know what I mean 🤷🏼‍♀️

Kenpachi is a lion. Strong and loves to fight.

Mayuri is something else from a whole other planet...

Rukia is snow leopard, not only because of her powers, but because she's fierce.

Renji is a dog because he's super loyal.

Rangiku is probably also a peacock because of her beauty.

Aizen is a black panther for obvious reasons.

Unohana is some sort of bear. She looks nice and cuddly, but could kill you.

Shinji is a monkey because he's silly all the time.

Sajin is a dog/wolf...for obvious reasons again.

Isane is a cute bunny!!

Rojuro is a cat.

Kensei is a bulldog.

Nanao is a beaver. She looks innocent, but is incredibly dangerous.

I have so much to say about the Bleach romances. I love how softly they’re told and how thematically satisfying they can be. But I also really like how the female character is allowed to be important to the male character.

Like Orihime pulls Ichigo forward - she’s the one who convinces him to save Rukia, her being hurt is what convinces him to reach out to the Vizards for help. Like half of Renji’s character is just trying to catch up to Rukia and stand alongside her, while Rukia is able to be a badass leader in her community. Gin’s entire life is dedicated to protecting Rangiku. Hitsugaya’s desire to protect Momo is the driving cause of a lot of his character moments.

This is anecdotal but I feel like a lot of times in shonen, the women aren’t really as important to the men as the men are to the women. And I get that these are series written for boys but as a girl it feels really nice to watch something where the women are important to the people around them.

I’m rewatching and rereading bleach and I have a lot of thoughts about the tybw arc.

My thoughts about this arc can be summarised as: “Bleach is a tragedy that forgot it is a tragedy”

To explain, the story of bleach is built upon tragedy. The death of Masaki Kurosaki is the start of Ichigo’s journey. Everything since then, every relationship (with maybe a few exceptions ) ends in tragedy.

@littleeyesofpallas made post that listed some tragic relationships in bleach (link)

Even outside of relationships, every (major) action in the series results in tragedy too. These are the ones I can remember on the top of my head:

Rukia giving her powers to Ichigo leads to her execution

Aizen betrayal leaving the Soul Society in shambles

Orihime going to Hueco Mundo willingly leads to her being branded as a traitor

Ichigo trying to rescue Orihime leads to him dying and losing his humanity

Gin trying to take back what Aizen stole from Rangiku leads to his death. And he wasn’t even able to give her back that piece of her soul or keep his promise to never make her cry

In fact Gin’s actions made Aizen essentially immortal and almost undefeatable. Ichigo has to give up all his power and leave behind all his newfound friends and allies in order to seal Aizen away

This theming of tragedy even continues in the Lost Agent arc. I have my issues with this arc, but I think the way it handles Ichigo losing his powers is great. He’s depressed, desperately tries to regain them and ends up playing right into Ginjo’s hands

In the tybw things take a turn. Not everything ends in tragedy anymore. And the things that do, feel downplayed to an extent that it make me wonder if there was supposed to be any impact from those moments.

I’ll list a few things that should’ve changed or given more of an impact in my opinion:

Byakuya should’ve died.

It would’ve continued this cycle of tragic relationships in bleach. He finally built up a bond with Renji and Rukia and now he’s leaving them behind.

It also could’ve served as a good way to end Renji’s character arc if he was the one to defeat As Nodt

The death of the soul king should have more impact.

We are talking about Ywach killing his father here. Why does it feel so glossed over? Whether you think these characters are blood related or if it’s more metaphorical, it still should have more impact.

In line with that. What’s up with Ukitake’s death?

I have nothing against him dying, but it happened way too quickly and it feels like almost everyone forgets about it a few pages after it happens.

Especially Kyoraku should have more feelings about this. He just lost his father/mentor figure. He had to take on the burden of leading the entire gotei 13. Now he loses his best friend. And what? Nothing?

Ichigo should’ve become the new soul king

He already is basically. He has the powers for it. People already look up to him almost like a god. They already had it completely planned out until it suddenly isn’t necessary anymore? Where did that come from?

This list isn’t complete, but these are the main things that this arc got wrong. Bleach is a tragedy and ending it on a peaceful and hopeful note almost feels like a betrayal of the story itself. Give me that angst Kubo. Give me that agonising feeling of injustice in a way only a true tragedy could.

I guess having the ending completely contradict the story also gives me that agonising feeling a betrayal, but not in the good way.

I don’t really know how to end this. I’ve just been rambling about this. I probably could’ve made a better, more comprehensive post if I wanted to, but I’m tired. Also sorry if this is awkwardly formatted, I typed this on mobile

Here is a list of my favorite bleach ships from most favorite to least favorite ( I have less ships in bleach than bsd despite bleach having a bigger cast go figure)

1. Ikkayumi ( Ikkaku Madarame x Yumichika Ayasegawa)

This a literal surprise to no one. I post about these bastards all the time so it’s obvious they are my favorite ship in the show. These two have an incredible bond that I truly feel like is overlooked by many. I’m a sucker for people who have been by each other’s side for years and Ikkaku and Yumichika have been together and have grown together throughout the many years they’ve been together. They do have their problems and I believe that they solve many of them before the start of the last arc, but despite that there is a clear love and devotion for each other. I personally believe this ship is one of those “basically canon” ships because of so many reasons I can’t list because this is not a ikkayumi post lol but the biggest one being how in sync they are and how they seem to know what the other is thinking without it being said. I just love these two assholes and I will never shut up about it

2. Ichihime ( Orihime Inoue x Ichigo Kurosaki)

Man I remember when it was controversial to like this ship. Which to me is a bit ridiculous since they’re so cute. Orihime and Ichigo is one of my few soft asf ships with so much love and care. Ichigo always has a scowl on his face but when he looks at Orihime he softens and there’s clear love in his eyes. Orihime understands Ichigo more than anyone and takes time to try and get his perspective. She just wants him to be happy and when he’s not it hurts her deeply. These two are meant to be and always make me so happy and I will not apologize for loving them.

3. Rukia Kuchiki x Renji Abarai

These two are just special little jibblet heads. As I said I love childhood friends to lovers and they are what made me love it. These two have been through hell and back together with an overwhelming amount of trust and care. Renji is the definition of a male wife for his bad ass girlfriend Rukia. I mean he’s already adorable but when you add how protective and attentive he is for Rukia it just doubles by a thousand. Rukia loves Renji and trusts him just as much as he trusts her. These idiots are so happy together and good for them

4. GinRan ( Gin Ichimaru x Rangiku Matsumoto)

Man these two…it’s tragic honestly. They could have been happy together but fate had other plans. I love these two and I love how unlikely of a pair it is. I mean Rangiku being beautiful and lively in love with a man like Gin. It’s completely unexpected but it works. I love the history these two have together and the deep love. Gin wants a world where Rangiku will no longer cry and Rangiku just wants Gin. She doesn’t care about how he looks or how others see him because she knows he’s the man who saved her and cared for her. He’s her Gin and nothing will ever change that. Despite these two not having a happy ending I will continue to obsess over what could have been.

5. ByaKen ( Byakuya Kuchiki x Kenpachi Zaraki)

Guys this started off as a joke but slowly mutated into some sick obsession. You know the meme of “I don’t think it’s a joke anymore” well that’s how I feel about these two. What can I say about them? That they have an interesting dynamic and their banter is highly entertaining? That they are both eccentric but the exact opposites of the extreme? Well yeah. They’re interesting and I enjoy their dynamic a lot. I never get tired of their interactions and at the very least they have a cool friendship…and in fanon maybe more lol

IF SOMEONE COULD have saved me from this ache, I would have taken any opportunity to do so a long time ago. The realization I learned over the past year was that no matter how good you could be to somebody, no matter how much you love them, they could never be yours.

“There are so many things for babies nowadays,” I remark as I sift through the aisles with Grimmjow.

“I can’t believe you dragged me here.” He scoffs as I put down a teddy bear into the cart along with some bibs and hats. “I can’t believe she’s pregnant and with that snake too.”

I turn to him. “It’s clear you haven’t been in love before.”

“Yeah, because you’re hogging onto it for dear life. Let the rest of us try to have some, but then again, your love life is shit right now.” He jokes, “You can keep it.” Grimmjow takes out my phone and looks at the gift registry, then puts a bassinet into the cart.

He might be mean at times but he’s learning to be more affectionate since he never had any love in his life. He’s becoming a better man.

He pays for our stuff and gets it wrapped one time for Rangiku’s baby shower today. It was late but with the unpacking for my apartment, it slipped my mind.

Grimmjow’s statement earlier had me thinking about whether I would truly get over Byakuya. The answer is indefinite because I could never see myself without him in my life. He could be just a friend or even an acquaintance and I wouldn’t mind it. But then my mind slowly replays our moments and no matter how much I try to push them away, he always comes back.

Something was going on with Renji and I could see from his worried look and on-edge aura. We were at Rangiku’s baby shower, and the shower took over in full swing, I’ve seen faces that I haven’t seen in a long time. I spoke to Yoruichi and Kisuke about their supply business which was successful and even had a chat with Toshiro who is gone with quite handsome and more accomplished. He’s currently a Captain in his station alongside Byakuya.

The shower was beautiful and perfect, thanks to Orihime and the girls.  Rangiku and Gin are having a little boy. As the shower went on after the festivities, we had to snatch a bottle of wine away from Rangiku.

Rukia held it against herself, while I brought apple juice for Rangiku. Yoruichi and Soi-fon were shaking their heads in disapproval.

“You’re a preggo with no morals, Matsumoto.” Soi-fon said as she took the bottle and gave it to Yoruichi.

I then noticed Renji even more on edge, I walked over to him and pulled him outside to the garden which won’t let anyone see us.

“What’s your deal?” I ask, looking him up and down.

I could see he was nervous like he was caught in an act. “Namika, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said nervously chuckling.

“Renji.”

“Okay, we’re close friends but promise not to tell anyone I want to ask the Captain for Rukia’s hand in marriage, but I’m frightened that he will say no.”

I couldn’t help the little chuckle that escaped me.

“He’ll give you his blessing, trust me. That’s one thing about Byakuya, he may seem aloof with love but he’s understanding and besides that, you’re the only one he sees his sister with.” I reassure him, patting his shoulder.

“Well, Namika is correct about that fact.”

Renji and I freeze at Byakuya’s voice from behind us.

“What’s your intention with Rukia?” Byakuya questions, striding over next to me as he looks at Renji who might throw up.

“I want to keep her happy and loved for the rest of our lives and I will do anything in my power for her. She’s my friend who I loved for years, and I want to have a life together. Can I have your blessing to marry your sister?”

Byakuya says, “If I say no?” I elbow him but he pays no mind.

“Then I will continue to prove to you that I’m the one for her.”

I let out a sigh and look at Byakuya, “Stop doing the over-protective dad speech now.” I roll my eyes at him.

He takes the hint. “I give you my blessing, Abarai.”

Renji couldn’t believe it, he bowed to Byakuya and then went off inside, smiling ear to ear. I was about to join him, but Byakuya caught my arm.

“I wanted to speak to you,” he says sensitively. I looked at his attire, his dark green t-shirt and black pants with a white coat and white boots.

“About?” we stand opposite of each other, and the air is tense, just one sentence could break everything right now.

“I need you to do me a favor and I know it’s not exactly something you would want to delve into right now but humor me for a while.” The imaginary spotlight on us dims and I can’t take my eyes off him. “I would like a restart for our friendship, well whatever it is now.”

“I don’t understand. What do you mean by that?” I look at him quizzically.

His gray eyes hold this intensity which makes whatever he wants to say more important. “We fought before you left and after that day everything  has been miserable, and I would like to rectify that.”

“This slope that you want to go on is treacherous,” I remark, looking away from him. “What brought on this sudden insight?”

“I just want you back in my life, because I’ve seen the way you talk to everyone else, happy and carefree but with me, you’re walking on eggshells. We used to be so close, what happened to us?”

“That’s the thing.” I feel my heart breaking. “There was never an us in the first place, to begin with.”  

This is what I wanted to say to him but instead I say, “You and I had different things in mind, and I wasn’t fitting into your life anymore, so I removed myself.”

“Do you hate me that much?”

“No, I care about you too much to even hate you.”

I take a deep breath before I look at him. “There’s a difference between wanting me and needing me back in your life. I’m not a toy for you to keep playing with my heart, Kuchiki.”

“That’s the thing, Namika! I’ve been ignorant of your feelings and I’m trying my fucking hardest to rectify that because I’m ready to do everything in my power to win you over. I know that you have given up on me and that you’re still hurting over Aizen but—”

I stand in front of him and grab onto his coat and bring him down to my eye level. “It was never about Aizen. I don’t care about him, and I haven’t cared about since him I laid my eyes on you the very first night we met.”

I hear him take a deep breath and my hold on him is gone.

“Tell me why I should even spend my time with you now. Why are suddenly feeling this way toward me?”

Was I going to jump into his arms now and get a happily ever after? No, because that’s not right. I’ve waited for this man since I met him and call it madness or so, but I will not give up this story. There was more to this than before everything changed between us.

I can see the frustration on his face, his brows are furrowed, and his hair was moving with ferocity.

“Because you’re my yellow. I can’t imagine a life without you by my side and it has been agony to live without telling you about my feelings toward you because I’m afraid you’ll leave me just like everyone else has. I lost my family and Hisana—all I have left is Rukia, Renji, and you.

All I ask of you is to please don’t be in love with someone else and let me have the opportunity to fall in love with you unconditionally.”

I’ve heard this thing called ‘The Boyfriend Method’, it’s to prevent yourself from getting into a situation ship and not knowing where you stand with them. If you like the person enough, you give them a month's trial of them being your boyfriend and see whether it works out or not.

And that is what I’m going to do with Byakuya.

After watching episode 7 of the new anime something has been bothering me. In the past you have talked about Ichigo's relationship with Yoruichi and from a realistic stand point she's not even his sensei let alone romantic or familial they're just mere acquaintances from a realistic stand point to which I agree fans over blow their bond. So then what's the deal with soul society then? Ichigo (realistically) has even LESS acquaintance with them then the urahara gang minus renji and rukia yet the man acts like soul society is equal to his family. I never understood this love affair Ichigo has with the shinigami. It's so forced that it has always taken away from the plot and made Ichigo's motivations for fighting in the war hollow it even feels like he declares allegiance to them in the soul kings palace rather then humanity. Technically Ichigo has more of a bond with Urahara or Yoruichi yet treats THEM more like acquaintances then his "friends from soul society." Why do you think that is? Thanks

I think it's three things?

The first thing is that it's made pretty clear early on in Bleach (like the first 50 chapters) that as much as they bicker, Ichigo really vibes with Rukia's ethos on a deeply personal level. They also care for each other a lot, in whatever way one wants to imagine that is manifested, which is why both the live action and the musical heavily focused on their interactions and feelings, as does Kubo's own poetry and art (like the "I will pass through even 100 million blades!" spread).

Rukia is the archetypal Shinigami to Ichigo. He even wields Sode no Shirayuki until Byakuya breaks it. (Yes, his first sword is just an oversized Sode no Shirayuki; he's using Rukia's powers and her zanpakutō.) This is interesting because Rukia's mindset is very atypical for Shinigami as a whole, but Ichigo essentially acts like Rukia vouches for everyone else in the Gotei 13. They're good enough for her, so they're good enough for him.

The second thing is that Ichigo has this whole combat empathy character ability thing going on where he bonds with people through fighting them. He claims to be terrible at remembering names and faces but he easily remembers and acts super familiar with every Shinigami he fights (Renji, Ikkaku, Byakuya, and Kenpachi). He feels sympathy for Aizen at the end on that basis. He acts very casually with Ganju and Kisuke. Perhaps most notably, he identifies with Uryū a lot more than Orihime and Chad, because he only comes into more direct conflict with Uryū.

The exceptions are Yumichika, Rangiku, and Tōshirō, whom he's ostensibly familiar with from the week spent in Soul Society after Aizen flees, as he doesn't interact with them much (or at all for the latter two) during SS arc. The two he only sort of tussles with are Gin and Yoruichi, and unsurprisingly, his attitude is still fairly guarded around both of them.

Basically the result of this seems to be that he feels he gets the Shinigami in a deeper way than his human peers. Ichigo is not really particularly good at identifying with people his own age no matter how much shared experience he has with them (like Tatsuki).

The third thing is, like Karin, he hates feeling like a burden or imposition. That means keeping his human friends in the dark, because they can't do anything. That means not bothering Kisuke, because he's presumably working on big brain answers. That means not bothering Yoruichi, because she just radiates intense adult energy. (See also: Ikumi lecturing him on relying on adults.) This means not bothering Isshin. And so on, and so forth. The various Shinigami, he views as "peers" whom he isn't burdening, because they can more or less keep up, and yet they don't really register as authority figure adults to him. It seems like in his mind, they're his battle bros.

Between these three things, I don't think he does have more of a bond with Yoruichi or Kisuke than the Gotei 13 members he kinda knows. He says stuff like, "I'm not one of you, I am a Shinigami!" to Shinji because he really does feel that way. They're just his people as far as he's concerned. He vibes with them.

the conflict between love and duty

It will always be mildly funny to me that while hitsugaya was ready to murder his vice-captain’s childhood friend, gin refrained from murdering rangiku’s captain’s childhood friend. 

I blame bleach for getting me back to rambling about these two. I’ve always been really intrigued with their dynamics. gin obviously joined the gotei 13 solely for rangiku, and you can infer that rangiku followed him there because they didn’t have any other close relations in their childhood (unlike say hitsugaya and hinamori, or renji and rukia). There’s a slight contrast as to how rangiku was as a kid and how she is now. While she seemed withdrawn and was content to just be by gin’s side as a child, in the gotei 13 she flourished. gin obviously left her intentionally, both the first time as a child and even while in the gotei 13 because while I’m sure he intentionally never formed other close bonds so that he could focus on his revenge for rangiku (mayhaps except for kira, his instructions for kira to distract the tenth squad seemed to me to be his way to ensure rangiku and kira specifically wouldn’t be caught in the mess in central 46, toss up for me if he suspected that hitsugaya would definitely rush back).

Despite devoting his life for revenge for rangiku, I’m sure he thought he wouldn’t be good for her which was why he always left her. rangiku, meanwhile, despite most certainly loving gin and joining the gotei 13 to follow him (say in contrast to momo who already had dreams of becoming a shinigami), stands by soul society in the end (which I’m sure gin also accounted for, he wanted her safe). 

Loyalty is a funny thing in bleach. The gotei 13 is a military organization. The loyalty of the shinigami to soul society are reflected in their loyalties to their superior officers. Which is why I always thought the vice-captains always had it hard. It just so happened that hitsugaya ended up being on the side of “good”, but coming from an organizational standpoint, he was as much a rogue element as say gin at the time, breaking all those rules and what not. So really, both kira and matsumoto were exemplary vice-captains. I mean how are you supposed to judge when your loyalty to your captain is supposed to end, especially when that loyalty is encouraged and even demanded in the gotei 13? 

Most of the conflict in the soul society arc really came from the loyalties of shinigami to soul society being tested against their personal loyalties (like renji with rukia and byakuya). It really was an interesting arc for me because you had captains like kenpachi who had no loyalty to soul society at all, as well as kurotsuchi who obviously committed heinous actions but didn’t really break any of soul society’s rules or orders. 

And this is why I hate it when momo’s actions during this arc are diminished or disregarded. Because what I love most about momo is how she will always try to do the right thing despite personal risk to herself or facing much stronger opponents than her. When she faced hitsugaya, it wasn’t a betrayal or her choosing aizen over him, but rather her fulfilling her shinigami duties. In an alternate world where aizen really was good and hitsugaya was evil, or it had been hitsugaya who died with aizen implicated in the letter, I imagine she would still pursue the same actions, despite the torture her soul was under. 

She was neither wrong or naive in that instance because that letter really was written by aizen, and who would’ve suspected that a dead man would lie. Despite everything, even hitsugaya who had a more objective view could only imagine that the letter had been altered. 

hitsugaya and aizen (at the time) are close to her heart, people she cherished. But in the same way she took a stand against hitsugaya when it seemed like he was a threat against soul society, she also took a stand against aizen for soul society and her squad (it’s the parallels). aizen’s hubris was in thinking that momo couldn’t live without him, that he was her purpose. But momo had a dream to become shinigami and protect and help people long before aizen, and long before even hitsugaya had such notions. It’s not anything anyone can take away from her, and I love that so much about her. 

And yet the dichotomy between momo being the dutiful shinigami and yet still having a soft and pure heart, especially towards the people she loves. From her perspective, she was doing her duty as a vice-captain of the gotei 13 in fighting hitsugaya, but despite that hitsugaya could be evil, she still falls back to her closest address of him, one laden with intimacy and history. This is the same way she ends up slipping and calling aizen, ‘aizen-taicho’ (ah once again with the ironic parallels). 

The fight is full of meaning and I’d love to ramble about it too. I still think her purpose was two-fold, one is of course to fulfill her duty despite knowing that hitsugaya is stronger than her (like the regai arc would show too), but the more tragic one I think is that I think she thought that if hitsugaya really is so far gone as to have killed aizen and put soul society in danger, and if she wasn’t strong enough to beat him, then she might as well be killed by her precious childhood friend. She never unleashes her shikai nor does she use kido. Even after all that, and even facing her captain’s (alleged) murderer named by her dead captain himself, she couldn’t bring herself to go all out, which speaks a lot about how much she really treasures hitsugaya. Maybe she also unconsciously thought that if there was anyone who hitsugaya would refrain from fighting or change his ways for, it would be her (again another parallel with rangiku and gin). 

This conflict between love and duty is also present in rangiku. Despite that she’s been loyal to soul society all this time, at the end of it all, she still chooses to go after gin, instead of say, staying and healing her defeated captain. 

momo and rangiku are in contrast to hitsugaya and gin. gin is obvious. he doesn’t care who he hurts or what gets destroyed as long as his revenge for rangiku is fulfilled. it just so happens that destroying aizen will also ensure soul society’s safety, and therefore rangiku’s safety. hitsugaya is a bit more balanced in that he has other bonds apart from momo (although I’m pretty sure after gin bonded with rangiku, he decided he didn’t need anyone else because he might have been pretty sure by then already that he was going to die for her). 

However, I’m pretty sure in my heart that he will never take any action willingly that could hurt or endanger momo, even if it was to protect soul society or other people. Again, I’m pretty sure that if their roles were switched and momo had been the alleged traitor or that she really had turned evil, he would never raise his sword against her (as the regai arc would show), even if it was for soul society. It’s lucky enough that the person he wants to protect wants to protect soul society and is in soul society. His best friend was killed by soul society but he stays in the gotei 13 for momo. I’m sure he understands the great import of being captain, and this is especially compounded when we later find out that he and rangiku had a great relationship with isshin and his captain later on disappeared. He doesn’t make light of the haori he wears, especially because it’s as if it’s something isshin passed on to him, but again he is willing to discard that weight and responsibility because of momo. He even expressly says it out loud that his purpose in perfecting his bankai is so he can better protect momo. 

In other words, while momo and rangiku act with their loyalty to soul society and protecting others in mind, even when it breaks their heart at times (doing the difficult thing in other words for the greater good), gin, and to an extent, hitsugaya’s personal loyalties are toward rangiku and momo respectively. 

This is say in contrast to ichigo. Both gin and hitsugaya have a greater personal stake against aizen. His speech against ichigo that a blade not full of hatred wouldn’t reach him was wrong. It was precisely because ichigo sought to protect everyone (and also because he’s the hero), that his blade reached aizen, in contrast to gin and hitsugaya. What happened in fake karakura town tells us that vengeance and violence will consume and end up destroying that we love. Despite hitsugaya’s oath of protection towards hinamori, he causes her grievous harm. Despite gin’s vowing to go on this journey so rangiku won’t ever have to cry again, the only time we see rangiku cry in the series is upon gin’s death.

What happened to them is tragic, but you can’t deny the beauty of their devotion and love. While I can’t get over hitsugaya’s and gin’s actions, it’s really momo and rangiku whom I love. While hitsugaya or other people perhaps may wonder how momo could even want to save someone who stabbed her, it’s that incredible capacity for forgiveness that lets her forgive hitsugaya and allows the both of them to move on (arghh, they’re chock full of dramatic ironies). It’s the same for rangiku who can forgive both kira and gin. Despite that gin hurt her deeply, she can say goodbye properly and think of him fondly. Despite that it was the girls who were hurt, it is the guys who can’t get over it. Both momo and rangiku don’t let hatred consume them, and this lets them fare better than their male counterparts. While hitsugaya and gin may be stronger physically, momo and rangiku are definitely stronger emotionally and more wholly. And for all of the gaps and weaknesses in the manga, I love how kubo portrayed these relationships and the lessons they imparted. That’s why I’ll always love these two pairs.

(3) What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?

It's an older Dragon Age Origins fic, all my possessions for a moment of time, which was for a gift exchange. I started it, despite not really liking the main character in canon, because the idea I had for it was the most interesting of the bunch, and came out the other side willing to punch someone on her behalf. It's a really personal one for me for, oh, a dozen reasons, and one of the most difficult things I've ever written. I spent fully a month on it. I cried literal tears of frustration. It's also a story I still often think about over seven years later after posting it and I think it's probably a perma-favorite at this point.

(For Bleach specifically it's probably a tie between two I'm unlikely to post, one Gin/Rangiku and one about Rukia mourning Renji after he dies)

I have writing playlists, but I don't make or use unique playlists for specific fics. I need a very specific type of music in the background for writing so for a long time I stuck to a writing playlist I made for myself. A couple weeks ago the spotify algorithm was like "we see you" and spat out a writing playlist for me that I've actually really been enjoying though!

I had to think really, really hard about this one. I think my sweet spot is 5-10k words, but it really, really depends on the story. The nice thing about 5-10k is I can usually write that in a day, maybe as many as four if it's the middle of a work week, which means I'm much much more likely to actually finish. I don't really have anything over 35k because I've never done a story that needed more words than that and that I was willing to spend more time than that on. I also really enjoy the art of writing drabbles (the traditional strictly-100-words variety). There's something very satisfying about tinkering with a story and coming out with exactly 100 carefully chosen words in order to tell a story within such a narrow scope.
