I just watched the ballad of songbirds and snakes movie and I'm feeling very emotional y'all.... The book was the reason I got back on tumblr and started enjoying drawing again so it means a lot to me ;w;
#i really enjoyed the movie and the actors' performance#i have some criticism of course#like the weird filming style#the fact they reused the same soundtrack from previous films#and sometimes the lack of subtlety#other than that i really loved it <3#tbosas#mathilde speaks#(it's been a while)

Genuinely my main thing with the Watcher thing (I watch their stuff but I’d never consider myself a die hard fan) is that I really want to see the back end projections and business plans that went into this. Show me how their math mathed to the point that this seemed not just viable, but an improvement upon YouTube at this moment in time.
I’ve been watching it unfold all day and seeing the comparisons to Dropout, the unfortunate optics of reinstating the “let’s go eat stupidly expensive stuff” show as your first big new thing for the platform while also saying you don’t have money to do the “TV-quality” things you want, all that’s fine and dandy and not incorrect. But I just can’t see how this is financially going to win out.
I wish the boys the best, hope it works out for their sakes, and I hope regardless that one day we get an idea of what the decision making process was. Not the vague “ad revenue ain’t what it used to be” type comments they made in their very not-reading-the-room announcement video, but actual numbers. I’m super interested.
#I love Dropout’s style but I’m also not subbed to them#I am chronically unable to keep up with things that aren’t on YouTube since I spend all day there#no matter how much I love them#i also think they’re trying to both-sides making content where they clearly wanna upgrade into tv level stuff#but also only want to make their Buzzfeed content that drew the eyeballs and brought in the money#but those Buzzfeed series worked because they were simple and the focus was on the guys and not the production value#mystery files lost a ton of momentum when they started talking to each other from across the room instead of next to each other at a table#ghost files doesn’t work when there’s twelve other people filming and ruining the isolated vibes#and I actually liked their watcher original stuff the best#puppet history and weird wonderful world were my favorites#I even liked Steven’s shows which is APPARENTLY a hot take now#but they all cancelled after one season#so I’m good#watcher#watcher entertainment#steven lim#ryan bergara#shane madej

So, this discourse is the main character moment of twitter right now...
And I have thoughts. First of all, the rise of anti-sex discourse in media is firmly based in white supremacist puritanical bullshit. The Hays Code was all about enforcing heteronormative lily-white "wholesome". LGBTQ folk and people of color, and women's pleasure(!) ALWAYS were disproportionately struck with harsher ratings. Second, film/tv/streaming has actually trended towards less sexuality recently? To the detriment of the quality of media that does center it, IMO (or why 50 Shades & 365 were oddly popular, despite being trash)....
Third, and thankfully, even more recently, I'm seeing the turn back towards sexuality in narratives but handled more thoughtfully than in the days of white male directors putting their kinks and fetishes on film (or why Bridgerton and it's spin-off is popular). Thanks to Intimacy coordinators and a broader gaze steering the proceedings. I really think a revolution is coming and all it will take is one big mainstream hit that is thoroughly sexy and undeniably good to critics and audiences. Preferrably *not* with het white leads.
#I have other thoughts#and I'll likely reblog with them later#so much money is being left on the table because we're in a weird purity culture times when it comes to sexuality on film#I'd be throwing money at popular romance writers who are of color and/or queer#to adapt their stuff#I 100% think a taken seriously Castlevania style adaption of the Ice Planet series would make bank#blah blah#meta#I'm demi and love romance and sexuality in books and film precisely because I don't feel that unless emotions are attached

If X Files was a mockumentary, Scully would obviously still not see whatever supernatural thing they are investigating but their camera crew would and Mulder would be like, "Scully just look at the footage" but of course something would happen where the footage was erased or some secret government agent would steal the footage or it would spontaneously combust.
#everything should be filmed mockumentary style now bc its so hilarious#i need xf ghe mockumentary like stat!#random text post#im weird i know lol#the x files

Am I wrong for not liking baz luhrmann. What am I missing
#yayyy famous popular successful director of really famous popular movies#said movies happen to make me really uncomfortable and not in a cool artistic way just in an I don’t like this way#I know I’m not getting it but how do I get it#especially with things like Romeo & Juliet and the great gatsby#like how are you going to take these beautiful works of poetic smooth flowery writing and turn it into this choppy weird over saturated film#it feels like in insult to Shakespeare and Fitzgerald’s writing styles#need some pretentious movie person to come yell at me because I want to get it

Saw a movie review that said the director was too self indulgent in filming his scenes, what does that even mean, or the writer was too self indulgent in their writing, like yeah, they're doing this for themselves, to do it how they want, it's really not for you, so of course it's going to be a little self indulgent? I mean, you can not like how a director or writer or artist or whatever did/does something, sure, I dislike plenty of movies and books and styles, and many things just aren't my personal taste, but saying it's too self indulgent? Huh? Wha? Like for some things I get it in a way if it messes with the coherency of a narrative, maybe, but in these other cases? Self indulgence is the point. They're sharing it with you, you get to experience it, but... it's not tailor made for everyone in the audience, it's made for them, the ones making it, and a lot of people don't accept that with any grace anymore. (And this is coming from someone who's one of the toughest critics on media ever lately, like I will hate things quite liberally, I will love things quite liberally, it's okay to not like things and notice flaws or have unaligned tastes or desires for a story, but some criticisms are just bizarre to me.)
#not writing necessarily#like the director put his director style in his directing?#movies#to be clear this is not referring to like a director overly focusing on like feet or something weird it was just style shots#but to be fair actually now as i type this i will say one director who was too self indulgent was guy who made oceans 11/12#i'm blanking on his name but that looks like it was filmed on a flip phone camera and deep fried and he loves it so much it kills me#it looks sooo bad he's so proud he may be a little self indulgent in his stylizing and directing okay just a little but ignore this!#it's personal taste#i'm sorry guy who may be named steven? stephen? i'm not googling it. i still like 11#that's not the movie i'm referring to in the reviews anyway#my point still stands#books#sorry i don't know how to be concise

We'll miss you, Matpat! I've only been around for 6-7 years, but thank you for being a part of that time in my childhood. Thanks for the theories and the videos. You truly are the greatest theorist <3
#thank you matpat#goodbye matpat#matpat#stephanie patrick#ash#game theory#film theory#style theory#food theory#i already posted this to the subreddit but i just wanted it here too... i like how this turned out#that's one chapter of my life over... i started off as a 10-11 y/o and now I'm one year away from finishing college#as corny as it sounds i'm glad that i had the theorist channels in my life during that time#i don't know what kinda person i'd be without them. i know i wouldn't be doing what i'm doing without them tho#and for that i'm really grateful#enjoy retirement mat you've earned it. and thank you#also if this looks weird i started this as practice and made it the final product off the fly#it's messy and i had no idea what the hell i was drawing.. but i like it. it encapsulates the theorist spirit i guess

The complete lack of self awareness when women make youtube videos and tiktoks trying out and laughing about past styles of clothing/hair/makeup and commenting on how wacky or wild or strange or ugly they were - and then they put their regular clothing and hair and makeup back on and think it looks perfectly natural and normal and sexy.
#watching a video where a woman tries eyebrows of celebrities and film stars from the 1920s - 1950s#and talking about how crazy they all look#and meanwhile she aggresively fills in her brows all the time#she even commented on other styles of eyebrows shes done in the past#including the 2000s era one-hair-wide brows and the more recent super-bulky-with-no-arch#and obviously now thinks they look wack#but like girl you thought you liked them at the time!#do you not see the pattern?#in 20 years youll think what youre doing now is weird and wonder why anyone let you walk around looking like that

"man discovers concept of friends" they straight up DESTROYED him lmao
#jordan chat strikes again#man those mtv cribs were crazy I would totally have friends just live with me#tbh mtv had almost certainly something weird going on so I get how they came off as weird#it's also likely everything filmed there was extremely fake so..#also not shaming jardon here!#just silly jokes :3#on second thought I would have to find people I REALLY get along to have them in my house for an extended period of time#the REAL embarassing thing for jordan is to like modern style houses#when he said id prefer to have a nice smaller house to a gigantic one that's weirdly decorated💀#my boy modern architecture doesn't look nice it looks sterile and anonymous as heck#ye ye to each their own#but it's legitimately THE thing I'm completely baffled about jordan#it counts as a red flag in my book lol#jordan maron#captainsparklez#edit: tags got all jumbled upon mobile not sure why#myminestuff

Actually prefer when the film quality is worse in horror movies
#Horror movies#Jigsaw#Saw franchise#im watching jigsaw and the film quality is better than in the rest of the movies and honestly? im a hater#i had the same issue with final destination 5#i dont know if its just the film quality or the change in cinematic style over time but i dont like it#i dont knoe enough about films to explain or pinpoint what it is that i dont like but its not fun#like the jigsaw videos are clearer? and i hate that. there was a weird colour filter previously and now thats gone and the vibes different#put the grit (poor camera quality) back in horror movies

feels kind of weird to see people take geloy concepcion's work with things you wanted to say but never did which usually includes people's very personal confessions and erase said confessions to slap their own vents over it and not credit the original creator at all when they post it
#...? i mean all the photos are from his film archive but it feels kinda shitty to steal it and not credit any part of it#like i connect w the style of his work + a lot of the confessions that come in myself but . why steal his stuff...#does he even allow edits of his work . it just seems kind of scummy idk#ive been seeing it a lot w vent accounts on here its weirding me out 🧍#nea.txt

i have started the woman called fujiko mine and am liking it. and i understand like why the change was made and think it suits the tone but this characterization of zenigata is. upsetting
#p#it's like hey you know how he's a cop? here he is doing these violent and chauvinistic things theyre known for/are built into the concept#and i'm like well this isn't the wile e coyote gijinka in a trenchcoat that i've come to know and like. wuh huh?#lupin iii#I PAUSED to pee right before his deputy in this talked directly to her i think she should kill them both#(<-aware it is a prequel and as thus she can kill at most one of them)#also (sorry i always tack on tags instead of commenting on my own posts) the fact that its a prequel makes the zeni thing more difficult#bc differing tone aside him getting more Weird maybe less violent w time would make sense but not less exploitative#idk maybe the rest of the series will prove me wrong on that but im doubtful!#he works in the context of this and what i think it's trying to do but that doesn't make it less jarring#that aside having seen that his characterization in this is closer to in the manga thats solidified my not wanting to touch it lol#i'm somewhat less reluctant abt the koike films bc the more serious/gritty tone is fine but if it's not focused on fujiko idrc 🤷#like the primary draw here was a story that takes her seriously/gives her interiority. secondary is the visual style

The name of the rose movie is one of the best compendiums of homely faces we really need to make more media with unconventionally unattractive ppl nowadays
#the name of the rose#like obviously there are attractive ppl like william adso the girl venantius or adelmo#and regular looking ppl like the abbott or severinus#but the the really weird looking ppl in the film really add something to the film#even the attractive ppl to us look odd bc they are styled in such a way that looks unappealing to the modern viewer#what with the ratty habits (esp of the franciscans) and the tonsures as well as the grimy aspect of the peasants#but it adds so much to the story and ambient!#they look like they belong there with the romanesque and gothic buildings
