organizing ur schools

alright so now u know what you want in a school and have some schools on ur list time to organize them !

the super prepared way this was uhh not at all me but if you are some one who likes to be organized here are some things you can do !

spreadsheets - this is the most common way i’ve seen! using excel or google docs allows you to have all ur schools in one place and it allows you to compare the different factors that youve identified as most or least important. additionally, it is useful to easily see which schools are closer to you stat-wise through the various methods of color coding that excel has

@science-is-golden has a college application checklist that’s super clean and organized - a good resource for organizing the important info for your applications (such as deadlines, acceptance rate, and other requirements) (original post) 

good ol’ notebooks - super easy way to store key info about colleges and that way u can basically pick any kind of layout that fits your needs. get a new notebook and make a section for each school you’ve considered with all the key factors (dont forget to include deadlines !) also a good resource to make more of a timeline rather than just info

printables - similar to using a notebook, but layouts are already designed for you 

organizer from us news - also includes other sheets for campus tours and a general checklist

plain and simple printable from popdox on esty - includes information that might be overlooked (like what ap credits schools with accept)

less detailed organizer from seekingthesouth blog so it’s good if u just want to get to the point

@studenting has printables that include a sheet for organizing info, checklists, and writing supplements

the lazy student way if ur like me and didnt care enough to make fancy spreadsheets like the rest of your friends have no fear you can still be on top of everything! the number one thing to do is enter every college ur considering into ur common app (even if youre still not sure about a school and might delete it later). the common app dashboard will easily display the application deadlines, if supplements are required, how many letters of rec, etc. for all the schools. additionally, you can save schools on collegeboard which will allow for easy access of a school’s statistics. this is p much all i did and i didnt have problems keeping deadlines or other requirements straight

ranking your schools

now that you have your schools and you’ve gathered all the information about them, it’s time to make a list ranking your schools. this where you decide what schools could be right for you and what schools you should take off your list. while i didnt do this, i have seen many people rank the various factors for each school on a scale of one to ten and add up the points (make sure to include costs in this !!) you’ll want to view your schools critically and determine if you really want to attend a school or if you’re just applying due to external pressures (such as prestige or because your parents want you to). another factor that can help determine if you should apply to a school is a campus tour. on paper, a school might sound like it could be your dream school however you might completely hate it once you visit. the vibe a school gives off can be something that’s hard to describe but it is an important influence in deciding what is right for you - i will cover campus tours more in-depth in my next post

determining safety/match/reach schools

a super important step in ur college application journey !!! you need to make sure that you have a balance of schools (or hope that u dont fall in love with any reach schools lol) to ensure that you’ll end up at a school that you will be happy and successful in

safety - these are schools that you have confidence in and are almost certain that you will get into. your safety schools should have acceptance rates >60% and generally your stats (gpa/test scores) should be better than than the average stats of accepted students. your safety school should also include price !! if you cant afford it then its not a safety school since u might get into a reach school and then realize you cant attend to due cost. this is also super important but make sure you actually like your safety school. i cannot stress this enough too many times have i seen people apply to schools that they dont care about just so they have a safety school. while it doesnt need to be your number one choice, you never know what will happen in the admissions process and it /could/ end up as your only choice so make it a good one !!

match - these are schools that fall right in the middle. match schools have acceptance rates between 40%-60% and your stats should fall in line with the average stats, but they still could be slightly less.

reach - these are the schools w/ crapshoot admissions. doesn’t matter what your stats are, it’s always going to be up in the air if you have a chance a getting in or not. these schools have acceptance rates >40% and they could have stats where u match with the average stats or the average stats could be higher than yours. this category also includes schools that are out of your price range

lots of people wonder what the right number of schools to have is and tbh there is no real answer to this? you should definitely have at least one safety though !! and in general, you really shouldn’t have 10+ schools. i know i cant stop you or tell you what to do but if you have that many, then you probably haven’t put a lot of research into your schools and have found the ones that will be the best fit for you (i personally applied to 5 schools). additionally, application costs can be $70 and several schools have extra essays so that’s a lot of extra effort and money that you do not need to spend.

I just happen to stumbled upon ur account and saw that you'll be quitting med school. I have a dilemma that I want to share with someone. Im a newly enrolled first yr med student and classes just started a week before. But I'm starting to form some doubts whether I really want to be a doctor or not. Its not that I cant handle the academics its just that do i really see myself being a doctor in the future and actually feel happy about it.

I dont even know if being a doctor is my dream anymore or just my parent’s.

Ok so. Med school. Tricky stuff. I’ll tell you a little bit about my background and what I’m up to right now to give you a Good Feel about how things are going after the decision I’ve taken and whatnot.

I got into med school about 4 and a half years ago, and like any student who worked their asses off for their desired universities’ entrance exams, I was beyond ecstatic when I found out that I had gotten in. I started attending lectures, group discussions, student projects, and for the first few years, I felt like hey, I think I can actually do this! The exams were pretty tough, I can’t say I liked pharmacology and neurology, but I passed just fine and so I thought that things were going to be fine.

[Narrator voice] things were, in fact, not fine.

I started having doubts around..3rd year, I think? Everything just started to become so dull no matter how much free time I was using to do my hobbies (drawing and doing art in general) and I think that was when my depression started to really rear its ugly head. I started to miss classes, isolate myself from my friends, stay in bed all day, and the only people that had kept me sane were my family and a few close friends of mine telling me to take care of myself when I was too depressed to do so. I tried thinking about whether I’ll be happy being a doctor in the future, and then I noticed that I couldn’t even imagine myself in a white coat, working in a clinic and talking to a patient.

This is when I finally realized that all this time, my wanting to go to med school wasn’t even because it was my dream. It was my parents’.

I struggled a lot to get through some of the days, but I managed to keep up the facade in front of my uni friends until I finished 4th year and received a “degree”. (In Indonesia, finishing 4th year of med school grants you a “bachelor of medicine” though you can’t really use it for anything yet until you’ve finished 2 more years of clerkship and get a “dr” in front of your name).

Clerkship happened after 4th year. If I had to use one word to describe clerkship, it would be hellish. I don’t know if this is how it works in every country, but in Indonesia, clerkship demands med students to attend hospital shifts with inhuman amount of working hours. We had to do 36 hour shifts every twice a week, and 9 hour shifts every other day. This might sound pretty light to some people, but it was super tough for me what with the amount of additional assignments and exams that we still had to do during our rotations. 

After 2 months of clerkship, my depression grew so much worse to the point where my best friend (bless her heart) had to call me almost everyday to help me sleep at night because the thoughts in my head wouldn’t leave me alone. Finally, I called my sister who lives in a different city to fly to where I was living in to take me to see a psychiatrist. It didn’t help because my doctor was super shitty about my condition (“all med students experience depression at one point because med school is just that hard, don’t worry, I’ve been there”) but I did take the meds. And I was planning to carry on with clerkship, until one day the meds gave me orthostatic hypotension (it was one of the side effects of the drug that I was taking) and I fainted in the middle of a surgery. When my mom (who lives in another city) found out about this, she was livid. She flew to my place right on that exact same day to take care of me, though she hadn’t known about my depression yet at the time.

The next day, I told her everything. Like, everything. About how med school had truly been stressing me out, about how I didn’t feel like med school was the right place for me anymore, about how clerkship had been making me feel like I was a worthless piece of shit because the doctors kept yelling at me, about how clerkship had also been making me realize that I wasn’t good with patients and that their lives are literally in my hands and that a single mistake could lead to their death and how I could never live with that much guilt in my life, about how I was so tired of being too sleep-deprived to properly function everyday, let alone to stitch a patient’s cut-up hand back together.

I told her that I wanted to quit. And so I did.

And you know what? It feels amazing.

I’ve been sleeping regularly for the past few months. I get to draw everyday now, and still make money out of doing commissions. I interact with my family a lot more and I don’t check up on them only when I need them to transfer me some money to buy food. I eat three meals a day like a normal human being and it feels so, so good. I applied for a scholarship so I could earn a Master’s degree in biomedicine abroad (it’s not art school, which is where I actually want to go to, but it’s not med school either so I’ll take it), I passed the first stage and now I’m just trying to do my best to pass the next two stages so I could get a full-ride. 

Things are okay. Things are good.

Things haven’t always been good, of course. People tell me that I was “so close to reaching my dreams!”, that my parents “must be so shattered to hear that you wanted to quit!”, that I am just “wasting away my potential.” My grandparents called me a disappointment a few weeks ago while telling me that I should just give up on my scholarship application and go back to med school. My dad told me that he wished I could “go back to the way I was and be happy again.” My mom cried multiple times. It hasn’t been easy on my mental health, but honestly? Fuck it. Fuck every single guilt-trip that my parents have had to put me through. Fuck everyone at uni who’s been spreading false rumors about how I quit med school because “I got cancer” or “I got knocked up.”

I absolutely hated how the doctors did anything back in the hospital. The rich patients got immediate treatment, and the poor got dismissed. The mentally ill were mocked behind closed doors, and med students were treated like trash. Rooted seniority where the senior doctors hazed junior doctors were still a thing (in Indonesia, at least). Literally everyone in the hospital had a superiority complex and I fucking hated it. Neither my parents nor my grandparents will have to be the ones to experience this on a daily basis for years though, so fuck outta here with your negative comments about my decision.

I quit med school because I did it for me, and only me.

This is by no means supposed to scare you away from med school just so you could jump into my bandwagon, heck no. I’m telling you this because nobody told me that this could be a possibility. Everybody I knew kept telling me that the only thing you’ll need to succeed med school is firm determination and hard work, and while that may be true for some people, I required a lot more than that, like a stable mental health, a good support system, etc. I failed to meet these requirements, and so everything turned into a shipwreck for me. My other friends, however, who were well-prepared with all of these, are managing to continue med school just fine.

That being said, this answer is definitely supposed to make you think about your decision more thoroughly. One of the most often things that people tell me post-med school is that “you should’ve quit earlier if you hadn’t liked it; it would’ve saved you a lot of time.” I hate the fact that I agree with this. If I had quit years ago, I would’ve still had time to search for a school that was more relevant to my interests and start over from a blank slate. If I had quit years ago, I would’ve been able to graduate from a new school and earn an actual proper job by now so I could help my parents out with our finance. Of course, my parents would’ve been way more harsh on me if I had told them that I wanted to quit so early on, but if you own the privilege of having parents that would genuinely and willingly listen to you, please talk about it with them. I had a friend who quit med school around a few months before 1st year ended; he’s in business school now and from what I’ve heard, he’s pretty happy with where he is right now.

Eczema - one of those super annoying skin conditions, diseases maybe, that can pretty much torment you. Its also one of those things that we put to the side since it’s considered merely ‘dry skin’. 

well, i suffer from eczema a skin condition medicalnewstoday describes as, “patches of skin [that] become inflamed, itchy, red, cracked, and rough. blisters may sometimes occur”. also happen to appear out of no where on your arms, legs, hands - kinda like everywhere in extreme situations. They leave you with itch sensations and wounded-like skin. Not nice. 

nevertheless, i suspect i’ve had eczema since i was young. i’d show my parents these weird blister-like patches on my wrists and hands. they’d disappear but i never really thought anything of them to the point where my sister would even tease me and say i have fungi haha - that’s another story. 

but since I’ve become older obviously aware of my body - how it is and how it functions, it certainly became something i grew ‘weary’ and conscious of. The patches weren’t just random patches anymore - they were something caused by something. 

caused by what? well i’m not sure. i’ve attempted various changes in my diet ie: diary & nuts but haha that’s not easy especially being at uni nor am i really aware of what my allergies are except, i have sinusitis. which is probably a factor. i’ve also changed my bodycare products more than ten times so that’s a challenge for sure.

i’m in my third year of uni now and more bothered than ever. as expected.

its winter in ZA and can you imagine all this dry skin. although i think my ears this time around have suffered more than any other part- so itchy, flaky pretty unattractive. not that i care much about what other people say about me but more of, i care about myself and the way i look. i also find, in my case at least, that my scalp is drier than normal. 

so, as you can tell living with eczema is not simple. it’s a constant tuggle of choices. there was a point where i thought i can deal with this but it’s become increasingly irritating. my ears, arms and shoulders are not dzealing! (winter can end now!). 

living with this skin issue confronts you with a lot of choices like what you put onto your skin as to remedy. in my case that’s; super luscious and moisturizing body butter for dry skin (with vitamin e and any essential oil) mixed with glycerin. i also use a mixture of avocado or coconut oil if i really feel like being glazzed. for really dry areas like my ears rn, glycerin is really useful. oh and tons of water especially since that keeps my facial skin moisturized and clear. I also cant apply fragrance in close proximity to skin so i usually spritz on my jacket before putting it on.  i’ve found that deo works better too its less harsh imo. i use perfume every now and then. 

& that is how i deal with my eczema. oh btw there’s no cure for it. just a whole bunch of ointments that exasperate the situation and create an unnecessary dependency. 

it is what it is. i’ve learnt to deal with it even though i dream of the days where it will kind of dissapear in the meantime, life goes on. 

& that is my story.

Its something I’ve always had within me, it’s kind of just who I am.

Sometimes I don’t even realise the effect it has on my daily life, I’m completely blind to it.

My name is Sam and I have anxiety.

Anxiety to me, is my secret. I don’t let many people know what I’m feeling, a classic bottler. My parents don’t even realise the full extent my ‘worrying’ has on my life. You know what that’s my pet hate, when someone tells me to stop worrying over stupid things. I can’t help but dread that my friends all hate me or that if I don’t hand in an assessment 2 weeks before its due that my life will come crashing down, I have no control over the way my mind works, it’s just me.

Most people say “I wish I was like you, so organised, smart and know exactly what you want out of life”, well that’s a massive lie. Little do they know the reason im organised is because I cant sleep at night knowing that I have unfinished tasks, that I feel like I’m drowning, that dwelling on simple things takes up my entire life to the point where I can’t physically function if my life is not completely planned out. I have always had a specific plan in my life and ill tell you a secret its been the same since I was about 12 years old. I was going to finish high-school with perfect grades and attendance, receive early entry into a university 2 hours from my home town- no cities because that is too far out of my comfort zone to even comprehend, I would get to uni, apply for scholarships, meet the man of my dreams, get married, travel, have kids then grow old. That was my plan and if I’s still being completely honest it still is. I need to plan, I have achieved every goal that ive set for myself, what an achievement. But am I doing these things because I want to or because it a part of my plan and its just what I need to do.

My biggest fear is that my anxiety will ruin my life, that it will ruin my chances of success. I already see it happening. It impacts my social life, my friends want to go on a weekend away and I never go, the thought of being in a strange place out of my comfort zone where I have nowhere to go to just be by myself terrifies me. I spend my entire day pretending that I have my life together that nothing gets to me, I need to retreat to my room, my own space where nothing can hurt me. I always need a safe zone, for me that’s my bedroom, honestly if I could I would spend all day everyday in my room, alone, but that’s not how I want to live my life. I love my friends and family and I know that hiding away will not only hurt them but it would hurt me. I both hate and love being alone. When youre with other people its easy to distract yourself from the constant inner turmoil that occurs in your brain, on the other hand when im having a really bad day, its exhausting to socialise, I just need to go home and sit by myself.

You never realise how much your body craves safety till you have anxiety, I recently moved away from my parents to go to university and I was so excited for my new adventure. I have what some people may say, very strict parents, they have rules and expectations that they want me to uphold, which I have always done, they often smothered me and quite frankly still do. So saying goodbye to my parents to do whatever I wanted, when I wanted for as long as I wanted made me feel alive. Of course being a first year student we had O-week and oh boy wasn’t it a blast, but i could never fully loose control because my body would completely panic, i was out of my comfort zone.

This may all seem a bit grim, but i needed to express my feelings. I need to make more people aware of anxiety and the damage it can do to someone. please don’t brush off mental health issues, just because you cant see the illness doesn’t mean its not there.

I haven't been able to get health insurance in the past couple years due to constantly changing jobs, and not being able to stay on my feet as much as I would like to in my career. I have diabetes, which is causing more serious issues with my limbs and eyes that I can't wait to take care of. I am in my low 30's, single, and a resident of Illinois. I know the affordable health care is suppose to start accepting applications in October, and care beginning in 2014, but I just can't wait that long. I tried any other state and federally funded option, but they have suspended their applications due to the new programs coming out later this year. I am 17 years old and am looking to buy my first car. I have found a 2002 Buick Rendezvous CX that I am very interested in. The only problem now is insurance...With my car insurance company, Liberty Mutual, it will be close to $800 every 6 months! That is A LOT of a teenager or for anyone to be paying. That is also being under my parents policy which has the best coverage. What can I possibly do to finagle a lower price? I know that the car should be registered as pleasure driving, I have good grades, took Drivers education...what else can I do to try and lower my payment every 6 months? Car depreciation/insurance question?

Let's say for the sake of argument that my car is valued at 2000.00 at the beginning of this year and my full coverage insurance on this vehicle is 500.00 a year. Now at the end of this year my car has depreciated to 1500.00. Shouldn't my full coverage insurance rate be adjusted to reflect the book value of the car and lowered appropriately and be dropped to say 400.00 a year? It's a hypothetical question and I understand that insurance companies won't automatically cut you a break if they don't have to. It makes me wonder if one needs to manually re-adjust their insurance rate every year to stay accurate and not pay more than necessary.
