tlh theories: kids (can’t) see ghosts

and BOOM just like that there’s only 39 days left until we finally get to read chain of gold!

to celebrate (read: bc i finished rereading tid and now have no form of distraction to keep myself from obsessing over the newest/second oldest generation of herondales, carstairs, blackthorns, lightwoods, and fairchilds) i’m compiling a list of all of my theories- from the well thought out to the seriously cracked out- for the series, more specifically chain of gold! i’m posting a new theory every friday until cog2′s release!

3. the blackthorns of the la institute are descended from jesse and lucie, even though they can’t see ghosts (jesse and lucie are soulmates and you can’t change my mind)

okay, there has been a lot of talk and a bunch of questions floating around about who the blackthorns in tda are descended from. while many people have believed them to be descended from jesse blackthorn and lucie herondale, there’s been some serious speculation in the past few years. some people say that maybe they’re descended from grace blackthorn, which i’m calling bullshit on. seriously, unless grace marries jesse (gross!) there’s no way. grace is actually a cartwright that was adopted by tatiana, so she doesn’t have the genes for any of the historical blackthorn features. the los angeles blackthorns, except ty, all have the blue eyes that have been associated with the family even before tlh (annabel’s eyes were also blackthorn blue) and ty’s features are basically a straight-up mirror image of jesse’s, minus the gray eyes which are still a blackthorn family trait! besides, as open-minded/forward-thinking/just-plain-fucking-accepting as many of the characters from tlh/tid are, unless grace somehow becomes consul a la charlotte fairchild, there’s no way her kids would have the blackthorn last name. grace lives in a time period where it is understood that she will take on the last name of whichever shadowhunter she marries (if she even makes it to the end of the series). so, that rules out grace as the blackthorn’s ancestor. we know they’re descended from jesse. but what about lucie? well, some people have been saying that she and matthew will end up together. listen, i love matthew fairchild with my whole entire heart. (i just want to wrap the kid up in a million blankets and feed him freshly baked chocolate chip cookies until all of his problems vanish.) BUT i don’t think he’ll end up with lucie. for a few reasons. i know that cassie has said that the family tree was misleading and not totally accurate (which is totally true considering it states that lucie was born in 1891, which would make her five years younger than james instead of one), and i’ve seen a few people saying that one of the marriages is fake, but i don’t think it’s jesse and lucie (who i have affectionately begun to call jucie). firstly, they have a back story, a bit of a shared history. jesse is the boy who saved lucie when she fell into the faerie pit in brocelind. i don’t think that cassie would set that up, and then have lucie be in love with matthew, it’s just too rich and exciting a backstory to ignore. i mean, young girl runs off into the woods in the middle of the night, accidentally gets herself into trouble, is rescued by mysterious teenage boy who won’t tell her his name, and doesn’t see him again until he waltzes back into her life after being raised from the dead? that’s the perfect setup for lucie to be shook when she finallys sees jesse again, and to awaken some feeling inside of her now that she’s older. plus, they’ll actually end up being the same age at this point, instead of when he was a sixteen year old ghost and she was ten. it’s a little too convenient for me to believe it wasn’t done intentionally. the biggest argument i’ve encountered is that the blackthorns can’t see ghosts and that if lucie was their ancestor, they’d have inherited this ability. obviously this could be explained in a number of simple ways, but i have a slightly more out-there theory. the blackthorns can’t see ghosts because whatever magic was done to jesse to bring him back from the dead made it impossible. there’s no shot that bringing someone back from the dead doesn’t have some sort of effect on them. if jesse’s dna has been altered in some way, or if the lingering effects of the dark magic that was used on him can affect his children, then that could be enough to cancel out their angelic ability to see spirits. especially when mixed with the demon blood they would inherit from lucie. if you think about it jamie and cordelia’s kids could have just enough angel blood to keep the gift and pass it on through the generations, while the mix of lucie’s demonic blood and jesse’s dark magic could push that over the edge into cancelling the ability out. even though lucie’s demonic blood would be diluted further and further as the generations went on, as far as we know, the blackthorns didn’t marry any herondales between jesse’s kids and the tda blackthorns, so they probably wouldn’t have been able to tip the scales back in their favor and inherit the trait.
