2. Work you are most proud of (and why):

I always really struggle with my Big Bang, and this year was no different. There was a lot of math involved, and a lot of schedules to make sure that the time travel all worked and the dates were accurate. I am really proud of how it turned out though, and the art (by the wonderful @monpetithl) is absolutely stunning.

3. Work you are least proud of (and why):

I suppose by default I'm 'least proud' of some fics, since I'm more proud of others, but in general, I'm very proud of everything I published this year.

4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:

This is from (now I realize that the world outside) it's bigger than me

His throat feels dry and his face looks flushed, and there’s a moment where he contemplates dunking his head under the tap, but he doesn’t want to keep the fans waiting, even if he knows that his band is excellent at keeping the crowd entertained.

Or at least, they usually are. But right now, heading through the hallway back to the stage, all he can hear is silence.

Louis feels his heartbeat kick up a notch, and even though he knows that it’s ridiculous and highly implausible, there’s a brief moment where he wonders if everyone has just up and left. Maybe they’ve had enough. Maybe they only came here to see if he was willing to confirm the rumours, and now that he hasn’t, they’re leaving.

His palms are sweating, making him wipe them on his jeans, and it’s only when the band starts playing the intro to Bigger Than Me that they had come up with for the tour that Louis has the courage to step back onto the stage.

He has just opened his mouth for the first line – when somebody told me I would change – when it sinks in what he’s looking at.

Where the crowd is usually colourful, little rainbow flags showing up throughout the songs, or being held up en masse during a fan project for Only the Brave, it’s almost muted now, blacks and whites and greys.

And purple.

It is a sea of flags. A sea of ace flags.

Louis is vaguely aware that the band has started the intro for the third time. He can hear the cheers, the chants, can see the banners that are being held up by people on the balcony. We love you Louis, they read. We need you and you’ve got us.

His blood is rushing through his ears and he’s pretty sure he’s about two seconds from crying, and there is no way in hell that he’s going to be able to sing this song right now. It’s not even because it’s one of the harder songs in his set and he can feel his throat closing up. But he feels like he needs to acknowledge this. Because while he might not acknowledge it in the press, might play coy, these are his fans. These are the people that get him. The people that understand and support and love him, and they’re right. He’s got them. No matter what else, he’s got these people in his corner.

5. Share or describe a favorite review you received:

So my favourite review wasn't actually written. It was a friend of mine, at the concert in Paris, locking eyes with me during Bigger Than Me, and the two of us sharing a moment because we knew.

6. A time when writing was really, really hard:

Honestly, a lot of the year. I've written on something every month, but I've had months where I barely made 5K, if that. I've also had periods where my health was just utterly shit, and periods where I was too busy (like in November, which I mostly spent hanging out with the amazing @chaotic-bells)

7. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you:

Well, it is written but not published, but something happened in my Big Bang for 2024 where I was like "really?? this is what you're going with??" and I guess you'll have to find that moment in my fic when it posts.

8. How did you grow as a writer this year:

I'm honestly not sure I did, though I feel like I wrote a lot more short fics this year, so I suppose in that regard I grew by being able to write shorter things.

9. How do you hope to grow next year:

I mostly just hope to continue being able to write, continue loving writing, because for a while this year I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue being a writer in this fandom. But I got lovingly told that there was no way I wasn't doing the Big Bang next year, and then I got matched up with an amazing artist (hiii @whatagreatproblemtohave!) so that definitely helped in getting my mojo back.

10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):

I had wonderful guidance in the form of @londonfoginacup who told me a) you are not dropping out of the big bang and b) how about you rewrite the fic in Zayn's perspective, which has helped A LOT. I've also had an absolutely wonderful friend in @beardyboyzx who has read through a lot of my fics, has offered advice, a sounding board, and anything I could ask for. My beta, as always, is the wonderful @foullovehideout who is just the best person I could ask for. I had such a wonderful time seeing them again this year too.

And then there's the people that I've written with! Most notably, @jacaranda-bloom who is my standard writing buddy, though we've not been able to write together as often as last year, she's still helped me stay committed to my writing and I wouldn't have been able to publish as many fics if it weren't for our sprints.

Lastly, there's the beautiful people from the @1dcreatorclubhouse who have been just wonderful and a great source of joy and comfort.

11. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year:

Honestly it always does. Mostly this year in the aro/ace characters, because they are me and I am them.

12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers:

I don't think it's new, really, but a) write what you want to write and b) don't forget that writing is a muscle, it needs to be trained just like anything else. You can't expect the same ease that you felt while writing daily when you end up not having been able to write for a while. Give yourself grace, and above all, believe in yourself and the stories you want to tell. They'll be loved by so many people!

13. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year:

Definitely my Big Bang for 2024. It's a struggle and really outside of my wheelhouse, but I'm excited to see where it ends up going. I am also super intrigued by the possible 1daroacefest that @red-pandaaa was running a poll for (you can vote here) so depending on when it runs I definitely want to participate. And I'm thinking I might dabble in some F1 fic next year!

If you were to rename some canon kwamis, how would you name them??

One part of me says I wouldn't change anything because I have grown to love the canon kwamis and couldn't imagine them as anything else.

The other part of me says I WOULD CHANGE SASS' NAME TO HISS BECAUSE HE'S NOT SASSY AT ALL AND HISS WOULD FOLLOW THE OTHER NAMING THEMES LIKE BARKK AND ORIKKO AND ROAAR!

But yes, I'd probably change Sass to Hiss. I don't think there's many others I'd change though. Maybe Fluff's, honestly just for tagging purposes. I don't know what I would change it to though, maybe something related to time? Tikk? Tokk? xD Or maybe Cotton? Bunn? I dunno.

Um... The only other change I could think of is changing the spelling of Liiri's name to Lirri. I always do a double "r" every time I swear. Other spellings I would change would be how Ziggy and Roaar's spellings were retcon to Ziggi and Roarr (at least in the new kwami book), so I would make sure they stay as Ziggy and Roaar because those are the superior spellings. Maybe spell Nooroo like Nuuru (from a fic I read), but I don't mind it as Nooroo either.

Oh! I remember a long time ago I read a fic that had Trixx named Vixx and Duusu named Juuno (I believe it was written before their name names were revealed?), and while I wouldn't necessarily change Trixx and Duusu's names, those fan names were pretty good as well. I believe there was also one with Pollen named Honee as well if I remember correctly, which was also a fitting fan name.

hi this may be a random ask but I’m not too familiar with rare pairs so thought I’d ask. With rare pairs, a lot I’ve come across seem to be rated teen and up or not really include smut and tend to be on the shorter side word length wise. Is that a common thing with rare pairs that aren’t say Larry/Ziam? Not as common pairings so they don’t tend to be the most smuttiest/longest fics? I’m sure there are some of course. Or maybe it’s just random that all rare pair fics I seem to come across are that rating. Not complaining, just curious

So off the top of my head, I wondered if this was a more recent thing because I can think of a lot of smutty rare pair fics lol, but most of them that I can think of off the top of my head are more than a few years old. SO I decided to dive right into the numbers because I love shit like this.

I'm going to narrow this down to talking about ratings (and likely smut due to the rating). And I'm going to give you the numbers on the most popular 1D pairings. We're going to assume that the Explicit and Mature rated fics contain smut of some sort. I know that won't be completely accurate, but it's what we've got to work with and what you happened to mention.

(The wrench that's thrown into this is the Not Rated rating. Some of those fics have smut and some don't. There isn't really an easy way to determine those numbers.)

But anyway, let's start with the most popular pairing...

Louis/Harry

There are 11,410 fics rated E or M which is 43% of the total Larry fics that likely contain smut.

Zayn/Liam

There are 1239 fics rated E or M which is 38% of the total Ziam fics that likely contain smut.

Surprisingly, these pairings are not the pairings with the highest percentage that contain smut.

Louis/Liam

There are 478 fics rated E or M which is 45% of the total Lilo fics that contain smut.

(You're probably getting the picture here...so I'll continue with just percentages.)

Liam/Harry is also at 45%

But there are two more pairings that have a higher percentage:

Zayn/Harry is at 51%

And the highest is:

Harry/Nick Grimshaw at 54%

Other pairings and their percentages of smut:

Louis/Zayn at 41%

Louis/Nick Grimshaw at 40%

Louis/Niall at 36%

Niall/Zayn at 33%

Niall/Liam at 33%

So it turns out the numbers tell a bit of a different story than what you mentioned. However, I wanted to delve into more recent numbers to see if there was a marked difference. I decided on using the last two years so Sept 2020-Sept 2022.

I'll give you the stats all in order this time along with the difference of the last two years compared to the overall numbers:

Liam/Harry 62% (+17)

Louis/Harry 50% (+7)

Zayn/Harry 46% (+5)

Zayn/Liam 46% (+8)

Niall/Harry 43% (+14)

Louis/Liam 37% (-8)

Harry/Nick Grimshaw 36% (-18)

Niall/Zayn 35% (+2)

Louis/Zayn 30% (-11)

Louis/Nick Grimshaw 29% (-11)

Niall/Liam 16% (-17)

Louis/Niall 0% (-36)

I also want to point out that the number of rare pairs written in the last two years is quite low. So like 62% of Lirry fics have smut, but there were only 13 Lirry fics total in the last two years. So 8 of those 13 fics had smut, but it was pretty unlikely you came across many of them.

Compare that to Larry, which had 5234 fics written in the last two years and 2615 of them with smut...you're a lot more likely to come across them, you know?

Even the more popular rare pairs just do not have even close to these numbers...Narry was the most popular rare pair written in the last two years and there's only 90 of them. Of those, 39 have smut to make that 43%.

Welcome to my July 2022 fic rec list!

Hands up, I’ve had a bit of a nightmare this month. Two trips away and then a full week where it was too hot to boot up my laptop, which means snatched minutes on my phone, which makes it harder to keep a log. And on top of that, my computer crashed so hard - twice - it deleted every version of this list I did manage to put together. So this is definitely not an exhaustive list of the fics I enjoyed this month, and if I read your fic and lost my note of it, I’m very sorry.

Dust Off Your Highest Hopes - pukeandcry - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - T, 13k - American high school AU, drama geek Louis and jock Liam. There’s a reason it’s one of the top kudosed Lilo fics. High school AUs aren't really my thing, so it took me a while to get around to this but it was worth it - I loved the Louis POV and internal monologue.

Stories Stacked Up So Tall - vixalicious - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - T, 23k - movie AU (While You Were Sleeping), ‘sad orphan Liam’ as the tags put it, which weirdly enough is one of my favourite things. I love (fictional!) Liam being down and lonely and then rescued by impish whirlwind Louis. And this version of it, with one-sided/fake Lirry and misunderstandings (lies, if we’re being uncharitable) making everything more complicated? Yes Please.

Laid Bare - biggrstaffbunch - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - M, 4k - canon, Zouis circling Liam like hunting cats. Beautifully written. Really inventive, I stopped multiple times just to think ‘that was so well put’. I can’t get the image of Zouis circling like that out of my head now. 

(We're In) Different Places - MissLii - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] @pandadepanda - M, 11k - AU, age difference, friends to lovers. Another one with the instigating Zouis and pursued Liam :D I really enjoyed it.

tales of a love in parts of a whole - words_unravel - One Direction (Band) [Archive of Our Own] - E, 26k - coffee shop polyamory AU and I think that says all you need to know to click read, but also girl!Harry, Louis and Niall. I… LOVED this. Like, LOVED it. The Liam POV is excellent (so confused, and understandably so, love), the developing relationships which are all so different from each other, and it ends up poly which is just perfect.

Fic writer here...I have never used a beta before, but now I am thinking it might be a wise decision...how did you find yours? Do you know any places where I can find one? (I'm also a hockey RPF writer...)

my current beta was a fandom friend for a while before she offered to beta my first-ever long fic, and i am so extremely fortunate she's been willing to stick with me through several different ships. i operate pretty similarly as a beta... i don't take requests and i only offer to beta for people that i'm already pals with or i want to become pals with.

if you don't have a willing pal, you can always try tossing up a post with some basic details about what you're working on and asking if anyone wants to beta. (5+ years ago meghan posted asking for somebody to beta her lirry werewolf big bang fic and i immediately crashed her inbox and she hasn't gotten rid of me ever since.)

i know there are fic discords out there that have channels for the purpose of connecting fic writers with betas, but i don't have any referrals for you... for a variety of reasons, i mostly stay out of that scene. but keep your eyes open for communities like that, which can be great resources. there are many nice people out there who consider beta work to be their contribution to the fandom ecosystem, and i wish you the best of luck in connecting with someone!

what’s your fave rare pair?

Hi nonnie! I've never thought about it, tbh. If we're talking fanfic-wise, in these couple of years I've been in the fandom I've always just read either larry or ziam fics. Thinking back, I loved the ziall dynamic in Escapade, and I totally get the appeal of zouis and lilo. And lirry or narry too. If we're talking about the dynamic in the group, I'm straight-up a zouis and lilo stan. Honestly, zouiam dynamics have my whole heart, can't help it. Does zouiam count a rare pair? (taking out the meaning of pair, ofc) If yes, well, that's my fave one lol.

If Harry had frozen at the scent of Zayn’s blood. If Harry had screamed, or gasped, or cried. Liam wasn’t there, and he’s determined to make sure he never finds out what Harry does when one of his bodyguards takes a knife to the chest.

Review:

I think we’ve all seen enough in the gossip magazines and entertainment news to know that celebrity isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. This fic is a painful but beautifully poetic portrait of what that looks like for omega pop star Harry. 

Dealing with the building pressures of fame, as well as living with the memory of the life threatening injury his former bodyguard, Zayn, is struggling to survive, Harry tends to reach for the closest thing that will make him feel something other than the pain he buries deep inside himself. Usually, that means sex with the nearest willing partner. And given his popularity there’s always someone willing. The author describes it so aptly and cleverly when they call it Harry’s “descent into fame”.

Told from the POV of Harry’s new head bodyguard, alpha Liam Payne, we get to see both the moments when Harry shines bright and those when darkness threatens to consume him. We also catch soft glimpses of caring moments between Harry and Niall, a member of Harry’s band and the only other person who seems to see when Harry’s hurting and gives him a way to deal with his needs in a less destructive manner. There’s a lingering sense of intimacy between the two that seems to affect Liam, but Niall confirms that the love between them is platonic. 

Liam knows his job. He’s meant to protect, to keep Harry from ending up in another situation like what happened with Zayn. But as time goes on and he sees the depths of Harry’s pain, starts to understand why he does the things he does, he can’t help wanting to be more. Liam tries so hard not to blur the line between what he wants to do and what he should do as a professional. 

If you like angst, especially for the comfort that comes after the hurt, I think this fic is a lovely choice to pick up. There’s such a delicious sense of longing that carries through the entire work. It’s wonderful and I loved every moment of languishing in it.
