the batfam tags are a nightmare almost across the board, thanks to the combination of the characters being incredibly popular and also having a disproportionate amount of “fans” who straight up refuse to engage with the source material. i think the last time i went through dick’s tag a solid half the posts were dickbabs vs dickkory ship drama, which as someone who likes both ships, is pretty much the last thing i want to see.

the funny thing is that i’ve been in and out of the DC fandom for around a decade or so and until recently i was always more of a batfam fan and while the batfam fandom has always had a little bit of a problem with shallow readings of the character, this recent trend of “fans” who proudly admit that they don’t read the comics outside of maybe WFA while claiming to be fans of the comic iteration of the character is…strange.

Listen I'm not going to lie, the TV series pickings are SLIM and the shows that does is gay look pretty dire (Watch Spec Ops: Lioness, a bw/bw love story that's mostly about the women's work as gritty brave dark tortured heroic US spies who are also The Troops, now streaming on Paramount+).

But film! Queer cinema!!!! There is so much good gay art! Some of it isn't even from the imperial core, that's how marginalized the queer voices you'll be hearing from are!

A/N: Wow, the first post went far better than I ever expected, especially considering I have no idea what I'm doing ᕕ(✿ᐛ )ᕗ It was a lot of fun though, so I'm back for round 2!

Buggy

✿ Naturally there is never a dull moment with a man as flashy and bombastic as Buggy, but that doesn't mean there are no calm moments. The start of your day is relatively mellow compared to the rest of it. Bugs will cling to you for as long as he can get away with before you both have to get up. During your morning routine you are practically on top of each other, but it is so natural and well coordinated, that you never collide or get in each others way. All the while, he'll be cracking jokes, and putting his hands on your "assets," followed by a cheeky wink, and infectious giggles. He loves when you match his shenanigans, and will overact his reactions, as if he wasn't just doing the exact same thing to you; "Well, I never-" - "You literally just grabbed my-" - "Never," to which you'll laugh and gently slap his arm while he sticks his tongue out at you.

✿ He's a materialistic guy, so he gives you lots of gifts, from the extravagant to the sentimental. It's the easiest way for him to show you how much you mean to him. Giving him gifts in return makes him melt; he isn't just buying your love, you are speaking his love language! As a pirate it's always been him taking what he wants, so to be freely given those things speaks volumes. Even more valuable than the things he wants are the things you have made for him. To know you have put time, energy, and love into making something special and unique means so much to him! He will cry because he is so moved, just hold him and stroke his hair while he has his moment.

✿ To be with Buggy means you have willingly lowered every single one of your barriers; you are an open book, completely honest about what you think and how you feel. He is insecure, so he needs to see that you trust him implicitly in order to return that trust. As a part of this openness, your personal bubble no longer exists, you have a couple bubble now. That doesn't mean you can't have space though! On the contrary, the mutual trust you've cultivated means you can say, "Hey, I just need some time to myself," and he knows that you aren't angry, or upset with him, because you would have told him as much. When you come back he welcomes you with a cheesy pickup line or wise crack as he pulls you right back into that shared bubble. It took a lot of faith at the start, which wasn't easy for him, and it takes consistent hard work to maintain this level of trust and honesty, and it is so worth it.

Shanks

✿ This man cannot keep his hand to himself! When you're walking together he'll have his hand on the small of your back, or his arm around your shoulder. More often than not he is holding your hand, fingers laced together, with him brushing your thumb with the rough, calloused skin of his own. In his mind, the closer you are to him, the safer you are. He's one of the strongest men in all the seas, so being in the same space means no one can touch you, just as they can't touch him, but you'd never know it. To you, he's just like a big puppy, needing to be in your presence, smothering you in affection. He likes to lean his head on top of yours, similar to how a dog will lean their head on your lap, all while wrapping his arm around your waist so you can't wander off. He can be a little possessive, honestly, but he means well.

✿ He will listen to you talk his ear off for hours on end about literally anything. From philosophical musings, to colour theory, to the many uses of vinegar - it doesn't matter the subject, he just loves to hear your voice, and to see how passionate you are. Shanks won't just smile and nod, giving the odd confirming "uh huh," while not really listening either; he gets really invested! Your passion is contagious, and you make even the most mundane things interesting. It's also good to know what interests you, as it makes gift ideas easier. Whenever he sees something related to a topic you've talked to him about he will get it for you. The main thing with all of this is the quality time he gets to spend with you; outside of drinking and merriment, it's one of his favourite ways to relax.

✿ Shanks loves playing little pranks on you. He never goes too far though, as it's important that you are laughing alongside him and the crew. It makes him so happy when you start pulling your own pranks on him. It is very hard to surprise him, but easy to confuse him. You know those pranks where people hide numerous things everywhere? Lets just say he is still finding little gnomes around the Red Force. The rest of the crew is in on it, pretending not to see them, and will deny any knowledge of them, and the longer it goes on, the funnier he finds it when he spots another - you hid them in the such obscure places! He's kept every single one of them, and they have a designated chest, but he'll keep his favourites on his desk.

Mihawk

✿ Everything about Mihawk is subtle, and purposeful, and that extends to relationships. To outside observers he appears cold and distant, like he is barely tolerating your presence at his side, but you are so familiar with his subtleties that you can see just how much he adores you. Each ghost of a touch and fraction of a smile are a declaration of love that only you can understand. He is much more open with his affections when you are alone, where you are safest - not to say you are unsafe out with him, nothing could be further from the truth, he just won't do anything that puts a potential target on your back, exposing you as his achilles heel.

✿ He is a classic romantic! Mihawk is courting you, not dating you. At the start of the courtship he will wine and dine you, lead you with an arm behind you that never makes contact, and the only time he will touch you is to leave a faint kiss on your hand after escorting you home. There will also be large periods of time between meetings where he will send many unsigned love letters until he can return to you. You know exactly who they are from, Mihawk just wants to avoid you being linked to him, especially when he isn't there to protect you.

✿ Once you are fully committed to one another, he moves you to his home where you are safe, and when he is there, he is so domestic that you often forget you are with a (former) warlord. You will tend to the garden together, harvest what you need, and cook together, though he'd prefer to do all the cooking for you. In all honesty, as long as you are there to keep him company, he'd be happy to do everything for you, but he won't fight it if you insist on doing things for him, or ideally together instead; "We'll get things done quicker together, and then we can relax with a bottle of wine and a good book." - "Very well." There is nothing he loves more than sitting with you on the settee with a comfy blanket after a long day of training and daily chores.

Scott pilgrim is a modern retelling of Dante’s Inferno, and I want to talk about it

Hi . Brought this up very briefly a while ago but i rewatched spto with friends last night and got my gears turning. I don’t usually make posts like this but It’s been on my mind and I want to share. Here we goooo. Under read more becwuse I wish not to disturb my beloved friends with a long post

First off, let’s start with theeeee obvious.

Say hello to our Dante and Beatrice.

I don’t think I need to go into this first one much, but Scott and Dante are of course the heroes(term used lightly. Scott is not a good person and honestly neither was fuckinh Dante of all people) of their respective tales, going through hell and back to win over this ethereal, “too good to be true” heavenly dream girl. Scott even dies to get her in the end, like Dante venturing down into the depths of hell, dying and then ascending to get to Beatrice. If I wanted to really stretch it I could say the dreamscape is a sort of purgatory but I don’t think there’s enough evidence for that one.

Next,

Our Virgil. What’s up, Wallace.

In the comics Wallace acts as a sort of guide to Scott. We end up seeing him less as the comic progresses, which I find lines up with Virgil having to part ways with Dante before he enters heaven. Not much to say otherwise admittedly. Love you though buddy

Now for the symbolism of hell. Since there are nine circles of hell, it obviously can’t match up one to one with the exes unless we add some of scott’s relationships to the mix, which both doesn’t make sense, causes this analysis to get stupider than it already is, and leaves some characters left over that already don’t fit in to these parallels.

Luckily, however, there are The Seven Deadly Sins. Going to be going in sin order rather than ex order here

Firstly,

MATTHEW PATEL - PRIDE

- the first boyfriend and the first sin very conveniently line up, which threw me off track because I thought the exes would go in the order of the sins. Enyways

- in the movies, comics, and shows, he is insanely flashy with how he presents himself. It’s the entrance, the dances, the expressive clothing (“that guy’s dressed as a pirate” “pirates are in this year!”, modifying Gideon’s suit to fit his color palette, the outfit he wore while kicking gideon’s ass). The theatre kid in him essentially

- taking the lead in the musical Knives and Stephen presented him with— they knew how to cater to him, because he views himself as the coolest bitch on the planet. Which honestly he kind of is but don’t tell him this

- so headstrong in his pride that he fucks up. Repeatedly. First to get killed, too cocky, spends all of gideons money “I’ve lost billions!”

- believes he’s entitled to Ramona as soon as he wins the fight against Scott

GIDEON- GREED

- I don’t feel like I have to explain this one but I will because I enjoy him greatly

- CEO, billionaire. Money money money mr rich

- literally “owns” or tries to excersize ownership Ramona in the comics and movie as if she belongs to him— with the glow, or with the chip implanted into her neck with his logo on it.

- has all of his past girlfriends cryogenically frozen. All for him none for anyone else. They should only love meeeeee.

- wants everything for himself in excess. Women, fame, money. Almost considered pride for him also but greed is more fitting

KEN AND KYLE- ENVY AND LUST

- holy shit this image has five pixels so sorry about that I’m on my phone and Google images sucks

- anyways of course they’re sharing sins

- not much to say here as they don’t show up much, and it’s easy to make the argument of envy or lust for ANY of the seven exes. These two were the hardest to figure out. Not as sure on Envy, but can definetly advocate for lust— playing around with women, thinking they were playing around with Ramona.

TODD- GLUTTONY

- this one was the easiest one for me. Like come on

- breaks vegan edge in the comics, movie, (vegan police), and show (Wallace breakup event 2 dead 5 injured)

- his whole persona revolves around food. Of course gluttony doesn’t always mean food but here it most definetly equates. Even when he’s vegan he always makes it a talking point of how superior he is to others because of this fact, only for it to blow up in his face when his enjoyment of non vegan food catches up to him.

ROXY- WRATH

- a very angry girl to be sure. Takes her emotions out using violence, attacking Ramona the first time she sees her, even though she is going out of the order of the league and supposed to be attacking Scott (although I guess that point is moot because they all think he’s dead at that point)

- “I’m bi-furious” line from the movie deserves a shout out here I think

- (completely justified) Unending rage against Ramona in the show, and scott in the comics and movies. She is PISSED.

Lastly,

LUCAS LEE- SLOTH

- also one of the easiest ones. Could have made an argument for pride (tries to prove he can land a sick ollie so hard that he dies) or greed (movie star who lives in huge mansion), but sloth ultimately fit the bill the best.

- even before we get into his reoccurring theme of “whatever” in the show, it’s pretty evident in the comics and movie that he doesn’t care enough to extend effort. He tells Scott he’ll leave him alone and say his ass got kicked if Scott gave him a twenty dollar bill, sends his stunt doubles to fight Scott in his stead.

- onto the show, he lets his stardom slip out of his fingers with his attitude, not even caring to read or memorize the script anymore (“is that why half the lines in your last film were ���Let’s Party’?” “I uhh, read the title.” Etc). Just spends all his time messing around and skateboarding. The title of his episode is literally “Whatever”. He doesn’t give enough of a shit to care. Which. Respect I guess

Extra; the exes ARE referred to as “the seven deadly chumps” in the show.

In conclusion;

Something about Y/N is a bounty hunter and she has been hired to catch Buggy. She infiltrates his crew to gain access to him. At first she thinks he's crazy and ridiculous duda with all his shows and bravado, but eventually she realises that she has feelings for him?

Well i liked this prompt so... I made something angst because yeah.

SAD EYES, BROKEN SMILE (Buggy x f!Reader)

A/N: i'm not really happy about the result but english isn't my first language and it's been a while since i used to write in this language. Sorry for the typos.

Warnings: just angst, swearing and the reader falling for a sad clown.

Wondering how you could have got in that situation was redundant. You knew perfectly well why you were there. It was part of your job, if hunting pirates could be considered as such. Well, it fed you, and for a person who cared little or nothing about anything but staying alive, how you got things was secondary. So when you received the assignment to hunt down Buggy the Clown for almost double his bounty you didn't have to think too hard about it. With an amount like that you could rest for several months without worrying about the money. You didn't know or care about who was after this guy or what they wanted to do with him, all you could see was the string of zeros in the offer. At the time that was enough for you. 

But that thought only lasted for a short period of time. The Clown was not just another regular pirate, he was a big shot. The guy had been nominated as a candidate to be a Warlord, which meant he was no ordinary pirate, and his special skills - which you had researched - made him someone not to be underestimated. 

Whoever was interested in getting him had to have good reasons, something you were not interested in at all, but as you got to know your target better you blamed yourself for not having demanded a higher price. Especially since catching Buggy was no easy task, he had a reputation for always moving around guarded by his crew, which made him slightly inaccessible prey. However, when you finally caught up with him and his crew, all the imaginings you had built up in your head disappeared in one fell swoop. 

Buggy the Clown was, as his name said, a clown. A real fucking clown who spent his days bragging about his fucking antics and didn't know what it meant to shut the fuck up because he was always in dire need of being heard and being the centre of attention.He wasn't a fearsome pirate, he was a narcissist with an excessive need for attention who told far-fetched stories about great feats that no one in their right mind would believe him capable of. He was ridiculous, and the worst thing was that his comrades adored him, they had almost a special veneration for him. You couldn't understand him, he became hysterical at the drop of a hat, he was hypersensitive to any comment that wasn't literally an offering to his self-proclaimed divine power and would go from over-excitement to melodrama in a millisecond. The only thing that was clear to you was that feigning adoration for this jerk to fit in with his band of morons made you sick.

Joining his crew wasn't too difficult - ego-hungry men are the easiest to cajole-. All you had to do was pretend to be a poor, helpless little girl without much talent who had wanted to be a pirate for years and had heard amazing stories about this genius jester who had not only terrorized the East Blue, but had become one of the most feared pirates on the Great Line.Buggy didn't even pay much attention to you, you was too ordinary to interest him, something that suited you. 

"Of course you've heard of me," he told you that first time you met him, when you managed to catch him in a tavern after following him for days. "Hey guys, our little friend says she's heard about the great Buggy!"

That whole gang of freaks started laughing non-stop, as if what you had just said was the most ridiculous thing in the world. Buggy turned to you again. 

"Okay, honey, what can you do for me?"

"Anything I can be useful for."

Trying not to sound too intense - so as not to sound suspicious - you insisted that you wanted the chance to learn on such a famed crew, to please give you the opportunity. The same night you were given a bucket, a mop and welcomed as an unimportant cabin girl. Just as you wanted. 

The idea was to lay low until you had been cleaning up vomit and serving drunks long enough to have access to the captain. You knew there was no point in trying to cut him because of his powers, and if you tried to tie him up he would escape, so the only way to make sure you could catch him was to drug him. 

The plan was a slam dunk. Wait until the key moment to attack and that's it, even if the waiting included having to put up with the bunch of weirdos that made up the crew and the attention whore of their captain, who seemed to have an allergy to normality. 

Yes, it was a piece of cake, or at least that's what you thought until that day when everything began to take a turn for the worse that you could never have imagined. 

"Oh, excuse me captain"

It was a night like so many others. The crew had managed to embezzle from a rich family and had pocketed a handful of gold. In the face of such success they had not missed the opportunity to celebratre: litres and litres of beer, sake, rum and all kinds of alcohol. Food to rave about. The crew circus that Buggy was leading that night was a complete madness. You, on the other hand, remained sober, in the shadows. You picked up jugs, replenished them, swept up some of the mess... Everything you'd expect from a rookie being used as a maid.

At such moments Buggy loved to strut his stuff more than ever. He used to stand in the centre of the deck, surrounded by his entire fan club, get on a box or powder keg and start his show. He would talk about how wonderful he was, how powerful and rich they would all become by being with him, and he would emphasise considerably all that he had done to achieve the goal. So it was strange enough for you not to have seen him bragging around for the last hour, but stranger still to find him down in the cellars with his back against a row of beer barrels and his gaze lost in infinity. 

Buggy was drunk. Very drunk. At that moment you thought maybe the time had come, when would you have a better chance? He was totally idioticated by alcohol, perfect for noqueating it. And his crew all drunk, no one would notice what was going on. 

You came out of your role of useless servant, your senses sharpened, your muscles in tension. The time had come before even your personal deadline was fulfilled, you thought it was your lucky night, but at that moment Buggy noticed your presence, looking at you with glassy eyes and lost because of the drunkenness, and there was something in that look that made you feel a slight sneezing in the stomach that you had never experienced before. 

"Oh, it's you, uh... uh..." he scratched his fingers, trying to remember something. 

"Y/N, Captain," you answered with a fist. The bastard didn't even remember your name. 

“Yeah, exactly…" he said to himself. His head crumbled a little. 

He didn't wear the hat, nor the coat. Her makeup was a little rushed because of the hours he had already been at the party, and his eyes were still lost somewhere you didn't know, but for some reason it caused you so much curiosity that anything else slipped out of your head. 

"Can I help you with something?" You asked, with your most innocent voice. 

Buggy stayed looking at his jar for a few moments and then turned to you again. 

"Do you think I need help, baby?" His mocking tone seemed to indicate no, but his desolate expression said the opposite. "Do you think a pirate like me needs help?"

"I didn't want to offend you, sir..."

When he saw how you apologized, he laughed, a loud sound, but lacking fun in the tone. In fact, his laughter sounded cold to you. Then you realized that Buggy was not laughing anymore, but was breathing a huge sigh. 

"It's better not to need help nor need anyone.  At the end you're always alone"

His voice suddenly darkened and, for the first time since you were on that boat, you felt real curiosity for the man you had in front of you. There was something dark in his gaze, a face of lost innocence that seemed irremediably familiar to you. Without realizing it, you had lowered the guard, and that was only the beginning of your great end. 

"You're not alone, Captain." You told him, trying stupidly to keep your role. "Everyone  in this crew is with you, and everyone adores you."

"Of course they love me" He answered, slightly offended, and then became blue again. It was then that he looked directly at you, and it was that look that suddenly passed through you. There was fury in his eyes, but also another very different feeling, you could see in them something sad and broken, so sad and so broken that you had terrible desires to reassemble it immediately. "Don't you believe it, Y/N?"

The question makes you uninterested, or too distracted. 

“What...? that they adore you, sir?"

"No, shit" he cried, shaking at the drunkard. “that we are always alone."

“So…” You was shocked, it’s possible that you didn’t know what to answer? It wasn't even a complicated or out of place question, what the fuck had you been thinking about? Fuck, what happened to you? "Well... I..." You had to react, you were shivering, you didn't shiver. You took air, trying to get back to your boats, and then you turned to him again. "Didn't we all be born alone?" 

"What?"

"We are born alone and we die alone," you said. "And we live together in the meantime. But we are born alone and we die alone." 

He kept watching you. You didn't know if he was trying to process your words because due to the state of drunkenness in which he was probably not processing half of what was happening around him, or if he really was trying to analyze you. It was somewhat difficult to discern when someone was drunk, the line between curiosity and ethyl coma was complicated. 

It was probably the first time Buggy really noticed you since you got on the boat. Because you didn't want to be noticed, he didn’t notice you, you were good at hiding. But now he had all his attention on you and something shrunk inside you, like you missed the air. You suddenly found yourself thinking that maybe he wasn't as stupid as you thought he was. Maybe that whole facade of bravado and arrogance was just a way to make up all his insecurities,. Maybe at the end he just was a broken man behind so much show. In that moment, as his gaze clawed into yours, you realized that he even seemed attractive to you. And that moment you had to look away, horrified by everything that was going on in your head, but what the hell?

"It's an interesting answer," he murmured. 

"I have to... I have to go re-set the barrels" you finally said, you had to get out of there, the atmosphere had suddenly darkened "I'm sorry, captain."

And as you went out sparkled back to the deck, you noticed something that made you absolutely horrified: you were totally noisy. 

From that night on, Buggy decided that you weren't going to be an anonymous person to him. It's not that he left everything he was doing to talk to you, but when you crossed each other, he always greeted you. And you discovered that, in some way that you were unable to understand, you were beginning to have a very strong crush for a guy who uses make up to painted his face like a clown and was a little bit older for you. 

The more interactions you had with him - very little really, nothing even remotely similar to that night - the more you realized that your contempt for all that circus roll and the freaks making shows had clouded your ability to analyze. Buggy wasn't an idiot. Well, he was, but he also turned out to be a very smart man, was good at planning and a real genius at tricks. Furthermore, despite being always talking about himself and being quite despotic, he really cared about the crew and had respect for them. At the end, you thought that he was simply growing up child  with anger problems, and that was really charming to you. 

So there you are now, you have a fucking crush on the guy you had to kidnap, not knowing what the hell to do because it's the first time in your life that something like this happens to you and feeling ridiculous at the same time because you look like a super stupid fifteen-year-old bitch. You've killed more people than you can count, you've broken bones, cut necks, ripped teeth off, but suddenly you meet that idiot clown and everything, absolutely everything you have worked on so far goes to shit. And the worst part is that you don't even care because you're too worried looking at him from a distance like stupid fool. 

"Hey, Y/N" 

It's Cabaji's voice that gets you out of your mind. Since you had that meeting with Buggy in the cellars you're no longer dedicated to cleaning and serving, now you clean and fix things. It's kind of an promotion, but really no. 

"What's going on?"

"Have you seen the two who came yesterday? You know... those who talked about joining the crew."

"No idea"

Cabaji sits carelessly, your voice has not shaken a single moment. You remember them, of course, a couple of friends wanting to become pirates. And of course you will not tell Cabaji that you had no choice but to open their heads and leave them on the other end of the island when you heard one of the two commenting something about the captain being very attractive and. That information don¡t fit well with your image of a worthless rookie, and it would also be like assuming you have more childish jealousy starts than teenagers and therefore accepting that you're reaching very worrying levels of encapsulation. 

Actually, since you found out how much you like Buggy, there are a lot of things you can't say. For example that you were the one who left that bitch without legs when he dared to make a comment about Buggy’s nose on the last island you passed. Neither can you tell the guys who hired you to hunt him that you don't plan on doing your job and that you've long abandoned that idea. I just watched MelonTeee's video on Ace and Worth and man the internal debate I have with myself on whether I agree with the choice or not...

Her video explains the fandom's love for the character so well, as well as why the tragedy hit so hard. For me personally I have not been that affected by a character death in a LONG time.

And I understand it from a certain narrative perspective – mainly how Ace's past continues to feature in the story a decade later, and Whitebeard's line that someone would carry Ace's flame, because that clearly describing Luffy. He goes after the mera mera no mi and finishes what Ace started in Wano.

But there are two major narrative reasons given for Ace's death that I disagree with. And are largely why I think it shouldn't have happened, and also why the death has hit me so hard.

This is going to get long, but I would really love to hear everyone's thoughts on it if you choose to read!

To give Luffy the push he needed to be stronger: I am pretty confident this is Oda's stated reason (in addition to Oda wanting to prove he could kill characters which I guess he said at one point and which is bleh given the level of injury a character sustains seems to have nothing to do with whether they die or not lol it's just what the author wants to happen). Anyway. That push already happened on Sabaody when Luffy lost everyone to Duma. He was HELPLESS. More helpless than he was through most of marineford. And when Rayleigh convinces Luffy to do the 2 years training, Rayleigh only brings up their epic defeat on Sabaody. He does not bring up marineford or Ace's death as a reason Luffy needs to get stronger. Because Luffy did not need that reason. The only argument I can think of is that maybe once he landed on Amazon Lily, and he realized the strawhats were likely alive, the terror he felt on Sabaody abated slightly. And therefore maybe he needed a reminder of what "loss" truly is to re-motivate him. However, I don't think that is really fitting with his character or the story.

Ace's dream was fulfilled: Oda has talked about the reason he doesn't kill villains is because not having your dream fulfilled is a worse fate than death. I think part of the tragedy of Ace's death was that his dream wasn't fulfilled. Even for those who accept his last words - that he had only one regret which was not seeing Luffy accomplish his dream - the amount of time he got to live with that dream was literally the last moments of his life. But I don't think just because you die with no regrets, does not mean your dream is fulfilled. Especially when Ace never truly internalized what his dream was. His final choice to turn around showed HOW MUCH he still was that lonely, scared little kid he was at 10 despite his warm smile and his growing family. The most heartbreaking part of the flashback was not Sabo's death. It was watching Ace asking the question "do I deserve to exist?" and giving all his devotion to those who said yes. It was him making the exact same decision he would make 10 years later, to refuse to run, because he felt like if he ran he would lose everything and Luffy was standing behind him. Ace's final words do more than state he has no regrets. He also gives the answer to the question he'd asked Garp, and that Garp had said only his actions could decide. Ace died thanking Luffy and his family for loving him despite the "worthless" or "good for nothing" person he was. Ace was moved to tears to hear his family emphatically saying "YES. You do deserve to live! We want you to live!" But Ace never actually believed it. His last words were a reflection of gratitude for the love he was given that he didn't feel he deserved. And thus his final answer to the question "Do I deserve to exist?" was no.

That he was too "good" This is kind of the most upsetting one I've heard (thankfully not a lot) and also the one easiest to dismiss. Ace, being the actual son of the pirate king, being super powerful, growing in strength and reputation faster than Luffy (debatable), put him narratively in competition with Luffy. What I mean by that is it positions him as too much the golden character, the mary sue, the typical protagonist, when One Piece is about Luffy's story, not Ace's. I disagree with the premise of seeing Ace's character that way. But also even he was "that" character, it's pretty clear Ace's dream would have taken him to becoming Whitebeard's heir - whose dream it was to build a family - while Luffy is Gol D Roger's heir. So Ace's journey would have supported the main story of One Piece and also be narratively satisfying.

What Was Ace's Dream?

The dreams Ace stated out loud were more reflections of his actual, deeper dream. "I want to be the king of the pirates" - because he wanted to prove his existence and his worth to the world. Which switched to "I want to make whitebeard the king of the pirates" - because Whitebeard loved him despite his blood, and so even if that wasn't what Whitebeard wanted, it was how Ace understood he could repay Whitebeard.

Both of those stated dreams get back to this question he'd been asking his whole life - that of worth. Worth and Love, which, for Ace's character, are inseparable.

For Ace's dream to truly be fulfilled, it's not enough for him to accept he was loved – which he did on the scaffolds, crying from happiness – he had to believe he was worth that love. He had to love himself.

Ace died with that dream tragically unfulfilled.

The Purpose of One Piece

Of course the decision to kill Ace makes the story more realistic and of course it is heartbreaking, tragic, moving, and obviously inspires deeper discussion.

However, what rankled me from when I first learned about his death, which was way before I was even introduced to the character in Alabasta, was that he is the only character of the younger generation (outside of flashbacks) to die.

Honestly when I first heard Ace was one of the only characters to die, I was just worried it would make him seem weaker or stupider than every other character, which is a personal pet peeve of mine. Luckily for most fans, it didn't do that.

Instead, what wound up upsetting me was how it seemed to contradict the purpose of the story that is One Piece (at least what I think the purpose is). In doing so, it opposes the meaning that many fans find in this absurd, ridiculous, inspiring, heartfelt, heroic tale about a boy made of rubber.

One Piece is an escapist story about a boy named Luffy who inspires every good guy he meets to pursue and achieve their dream. It's also about Luffy beating up every bad guy who punishments are that they cannot fulfill their morally reprehensible dreams.

Because of Ace's premature death, he is the only good guy character in the main timeline who does not get to pursue his dream. And what's extra tragic is that he is also one of the most deserving of seeing his dream fulfilled.

KOBY SFW ALPHABET

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

He's not one for public displays of affection, especially because he wants to keep you safe. To him, letting the world know you're together is basically like painting a target on your back for every pirate out there, you know? And he obviously doesn’t want that. But when he's away from the prying eyes of pirates, things are different. Unless he's at Marine Headquarters, you’re more than welcome to lock arms with him or hold his hand.

However, he does have his limits. Anything too overly affectionate might make him shy and a bit embarrassed—not because of you, but because of the setting. I mean, you're literally surrounded by his comrades, subordinates, and superiors. Imagine the looks you'd get. Just picture a stern-faced admiral trying to keep a straight face while you're smothering him with affection. Not exactly the time or place, right?

So while he's all for the occasional arm lock or a quick, reassuring touch, he prefers to keep the more intimate moments for when you're alone. He’ll give you a smile or a gentle squeeze of your hand in public, but the real tenderness is saved for when you both have a bit of privacy.

In private, he’s a lot more affectionate. He cuddles you more, hugs you more, and does much more.

When it comes to showing affection, Koby pulls out all the stops. He’s got it all: words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, and physical touch. It’s like he read the book on love languages and decided to master each one just for you.

Koby absolutely loves hyping you up whenever you accomplish something, no matter how big or small. You aced a work presentation? He’s there with a proud smile and a heartfelt, “You’re amazing!” He secretly thinks you’re incredibly cool but keeps it to himself sometimes because he’s a bit nervous that you’ll think he’s just a big nerd.

Spoiler alert: He totally is, but in the best way possible.

Acts of service are his specialty. He’s the type to take care of the laundry, whip up your favorite meals, or help fix that annoying leaky faucet. These little gestures might seem small, but they’re his way of showing he cares. And when it comes to bigger tasks, he’s all in. Need help moving furniture or organizing a room? He’s got you covered. Honestly, he’d go to great lengths for you—there’s practically nothing he wouldn’t do.

And despite the demanding nature of his Marine duties, Koby always makes sure there’s quality time for the two of you. He feels guilty when he’s away for too long, engrossed in Marine missions, and compensates by writing you long, heartfelt letters. These letters are filled with sweet words about how much he misses you and hopes you’re doing well. And when he’s finally back, he makes up for lost time with an abundance of cuddles and hugs!

Physical touch is another big way Koby shows his love. Whether it’s a gentle squeeze of your hand to reassure you, a warm hug to comfort you, or simply holding your hand as you walk together, he’s all about those little touches that make you feel secure and loved.

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)

Starting a friendship with Koby is literally the easiest thing in the world. This is the guy who’s best buddies with Luffy, who’s a pirate. If Koby can forge a bond with the Straw Hat Captain, then whether you’re a pirate, a Marine, a civilian, or even a squid or an ant, you’ve got a very good chance of striking up a friendship with him. The possibilities are as vast as the ocean itself.

Koby’s open-hearted nature makes it easy for friendships to blossom in countless ways. Maybe you’re a pirate who crossed paths with him during a mission, and instead of clashing, you found common ground. Perhaps you’re a fellow Marine bonding over shared duties and late-night shifts. Or you might be a civilian who stumbled into his life, needing help with something mundane like a lost pet. Koby’s the kind of guy who’d stop and lend a hand, no questions asked.

So however you envision it, the beginning of a friendship with Koby can take many forms. What I’m trying to say is that there isn’t really a specific type of way you can start a friendship with Koby; the numerous ways you can become friends with him are endless, so I’ll leave it up to you as to how you think the friendship starts.

As a best friend, Koby is the kind of person who instantly inspires you—his optimism and kindness are infectious. There’s not a hint of evilness in him—he’s genuinely good to the core. Having Koby as your best friend means having someone who’s always got your back, no matter what. He supports you in everything you do, from your smallest goals to your biggest dreams.

Whenever self-doubt creeps in, Koby’s right there to dispel it with his unwavering belief in you. His encouraging words and sincere compliments make you feel like you can conquer anything. And if you ever face fears or obstacles, Koby is there to help you overcome them, just like Luffy helped him conquer his fear of Alvida. His method might be different, but the result is the same: you emerge stronger and more confident.

Koby’s optimism is like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. Even if you’re not naturally optimistic, his positive outlook on life rubs off on you. He’s always looking on the bright side, finding silver linings even in the toughest situations.

He absolutely loves cuddling! There's something incredibly comforting about being wrapped up in your arms or having his arms around you. When he's holding you close, it's like he's basking in the warmth and softness of fluffy clouds. It’s one of his favorite ways to unwind after a long day of Marine duties. He often jokes that your hugs are better than any bed or pillow, and honestly, he means it. So if you ever want to make his day, just pull him into a cuddle, and he’ll melt into you.

He’s more than happy to cuddle in whatever way you prefer. Whether you like spooning, lying on his chest, or simply being close, he’s always ready to accommodate. But if he had to choose, there’s a special place in his heart for those cuddling positions where you’re both just wrapped up in each other’s arms. The closer you are, the more at ease he feels. It’s like a tangible reminder that you’re right there with him, and it fills him with a deep sense of peace and contentment.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

Honestly, yeah, he does want to settle down, but he's thinking more about doing that later in the future. Right now, he's focused on his Marine duties and personal growth, but the idea of settling down with someone special is definitely in his mind.

Now, when it comes to household skills, Koby's got some solid credentials. He’s a whiz at cleaning, thanks to his early days as a chore boy in the Marines. So rest assured, with Koby around, your place will always be spotless.

As for cooking, Koby's no gourmet chef, but he’s decent in the kitchen. He can whip up a variety of meals that are tasty and satisfying. His cooking might not win any awards, but it’s made with care and a touch of love. So, while there might not be much to say about his culinary skills, you can always count on him for a hearty, home-cooked meal. <3

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)

If Koby ever had to break up with you, he would handle it with the utmost care and respect. He’s deeply considerate of your feelings and wants to ensure that the conversation is as peaceful and problem-free as possible. The last thing he wants is for you to be hurt or to have a sudden emotional breakdown. And if you do start having an emotional breakdown, you better believe he’s going to do his best to comfort you. 

During the breakup, Koby is very gentle and patient. He reassures you that it’s simply for the best, explaining his reasons in a way that shows he’s thought it through and that it’s not a decision he’s taken lightly. His primary goal is to avoid causing you any unnecessary pain and to make sure you understand that this isn't a reflection of your worth or his feelings towards you as a person.

After explaining his decision, he’ll ask if you’d like to stay in touch. He understands if you’d prefer some distance and is completely fine with that. But if you want to maintain a friendship, he’s open to it as well. Koby genuinely wants to be there for you if you need it, even after the romantic relationship has ended.

He makes it clear that just because you’re breaking up, it doesn’t mean he hates you or thinks any less of you. In fact, he’ll emphasize that he still cares deeply about you and respects you. F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Very great dumb question! How does Koby feel about commitment? Well, Koby is a narcissistic man who does not care about you or your feelings!

Just kidding. He’s obviously not like that, which should already be clear.

Koby is very serious about commitment. He values a healthy, fulfilling, and loving relationship and works tirelessly to ensure that’s what you both have. He’s not just in it for the short term, casual flings, or any of that stuff—he's in it for the long haul.

Koby understands that commitment means being there through thick and thin, supporting you in your dreams and challenges, and building a life together based on trust and mutual respect. He strives to be the best partner he can be, always putting in the effort to make you feel valued and loved. He’s all about creating a strong, lasting bond with you and making sure your relationship is as amazing as it can be.

Honestly, despite how young Koby is—just 18—he definitely has thoughts about getting married someday. However, he envisions this happening later on in the future, perhaps around his late 20s or so.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

Both physically and emotionally, Koby is the most gentle man you could ever have. He’s never rough with you in any way. His touch is always tender, whether he’s holding your hand, giving you a hug, or simply being close. Emotionally, he’s just as gentle, always considering your feelings and ensuring that his words and actions never cause you harm.

It’s hard to say more because there’s really not much to add—gentleness is simply a part of who he is. It’s not just you who experience his kindness and care; Koby extends this gentleness to almost everything and everyone around him. His nature is to approach life with a soft, compassionate heart, making him a truly special person to be with.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)

He absolutely loves hugs. As I mentioned in the cuddles part, the closer you are, the more at ease he feels—and that goes for hugs as well! Hugs are one of his favorite ways to connect with you, offering both comfort and warmth.

Koby hugs you pretty often, especially in private, where he feels free to show his affection without any reservations. But that doesn’t mean he deprives you of hugs in public. In fact, he makes sure to give you a warm embrace, particularly when he’s about to leave for a dangerous mission. Those public hugs might be a bit more reserved, but they still carry all the love and reassurance he wants to give you.

His hugs are always soft and gentle, never firm, rough, or harsh in any way. When he wraps his arms around you, it feels like being enveloped in a cocoon of safety and affection. Each hug is a quiet promise of his care and devotion, a way for him to silently communicate how much you mean to him. I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)

This can go either way. Koby doesn’t say “I love you” immediately in the first few weeks of the relationship, but he doesn’t wait too long to say it either. It really depends on how things unfold between you two. Either you say it first, or he gathers the courage to do so first.

Koby tends to overthink this a lot. He’s torn between wanting to make sure the timing is just right and not wanting you to feel bad by waiting too long to hear those special words. He’s deeply considerate and wants to ensure that when he does say “I love you,” it feels genuine and heartfelt.

The anticipation makes him a bit nervous. He doesn’t want to rush things and make you uncomfortable, but he also wants you to know how much you mean to him. It’s a delicate balance for him, and he’s constantly thinking about the best way to express his feelings without overwhelming you. So while he waits for the appropriate moment, he’s a bundle of nerves, hoping that when he finally does say it, it’s perfect.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

He surprisingly never gets jealous. Even if someone is outright hitting on you right in front of his very own eyes, he still won’t show any signs of jealousy. Koby trusts you deeply and believes in the strength of your relationship.

However, in those very rare moments when he does feel a twinge of jealousy, he keeps it to himself at first. He thinks it's better to avoid such feelings and not let them affect your relationship. He doesn't want to burden you with his insecurities.

If he feels his jealousy increasing and it becomes something he can’t just shake off, he’ll approach you about it very nicely. No arguments, no conflicts, no accusations—just a calm, respectful conversation. Koby values open communication and wants to make sure you both are on the same page. He’ll explain his feelings honestly, but always with the intent to understand and resolve any issues peacefully.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

His kisses are soft and gentle, just like the rest of his affections.

Koby’s favorite spots to kiss are your cheeks and your lips, keeping them sweet and innocent.

When it comes to being kissed, Koby is happy with any part of his face. Whether it’s a quick peck on the forehead, a soft kiss on the nose, or a lingering kiss on the lips!

L = Little ones (How are they around children?)

There are multiple clips of Koby with children, and in all of them, he’s literally so sweet and angelic. He interacts with them with such kindness and patience that it’s impossible not to see how good he is with kids. Even with the more troublesome children, he remains calm and understanding.

There’s really not much more to say here because it’s pretty obvious: Koby is amazing with children.

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)

Marine duties call at the crack of dawn, meaning Koby has to be up at the earliest of the earliest hours. But before he leaves, he always makes sure to give you a gentle peck on the cheek. Every morning, he’s torn between wanting to wake you up to let you know he’s leaving and not having the heart to disturb your beauty sleep.

This has become a part of his daily routine: he spaces out while looking at your peaceful, sleeping face, silently debating whether to wake you or not. Sometimes, you wake up while he’s in the middle of this internal struggle and find him just staring at you with a soft expression. Concerned, you ask him why he’s just standing there, and he blushes, clearly embarrassed. With a sheepish smile, he tells you he’s leaving and then leans down to give you a sweet kiss.

Those moments, though brief, are filled with tenderness and love. He then quietly slips out, hoping you’ll drift back to sleep, knowing how much he cares.

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)

Nights with Koby are very peaceful and calm! He doesn’t go to sleep until he’s sure you’re comfortable and have everything you need. His priority is your comfort and well-being, and he takes it seriously, ensuring you’re settled in before he even thinks about closing his eyes.

Need a drink before heading to sleep? He’s already there at your side with the drink you wanted before you can even finish your sentence. You can’t sleep unless there’s some sort of noise in the background? Don’t worry, Koby’s already pulling up a playlist!

And here’s a bonus, random thing: if you have a nighttime skincare routine, Koby will definitely take part in it too—only if you want him to, of course. You don’t even have to beg him—he’s already eager to join you in your routine!

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)

He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if an enemy ever managed to harm you in any way, so he tries very hard—exceptionally hard—to prevent that from happening. He would literally take bullets for you.

If you’re ever the one protecting Koby, he’ll definitely be grateful for your bravery and strength. However, he’ll still insist that you let him protect you, no matter how capable you are. While he trusts you to defend yourself, he would much rather take the lead to ensure you aren’t hurt in any way.

He puts a good equal amount of effort into dates, anniversaries, gifts, and everyday tasks. You will never catch this man not putting in effort when it comes to your relationship. Whether it’s planning a special date night, remembering your anniversary, picking out the perfect gift, or simply helping with daily chores, Koby is always attentive and dedicated.

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)

The only bad habit I can think of is that his commitment to the Marines can sometimes overshadow his personal life.

That—and at times, he struggles to make quick decisions, especially when it involves something important to your relationship. His desire to make the right choice for both of you can lead to procrastination.

Other than that, he's the world's most perfect man.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Honestly, Koby has never been one to be overly concerned about his looks. He’s always been more focused on his duties and responsibilities. But ever since he entered a relationship with you, things have changed a bit. It’s not that you make him insecure or anything, but sometimes he finds himself wondering if you genuinely think he’s attractive or not, and he ponders a lot over that.

This newfound awareness of his appearance isn’t about vanity; it’s about wanting to be his best self for you. Koby deeply values your opinion and cares about how you see him. He starts paying more attention to his grooming and how he presents himself, hoping to make a good impression on you every day.

Would he feel incomplete without you? Oh, definitely. Koby literally devotes himself to you, doing his absolute best to keep you comfortable and happy. If something happened to you or if you left him for whatever reason (booo boooo!! I’m booing you!!🍅🍅🍅), it would feel like all the work he’s put in was completely discarded.

He would feel an overwhelming sense of loss and heartbreak, questioning if there was something he could have done differently. The thought of all the moments you’ve shared—the laughter, the struggles, and the love—being just memories would be unbearable. It would feel like losing a part of himself.

He has a sweet tooth that he tries to keep under wraps. That’s it. That’s the headcanon.

He definitely can’t stand cruelty or evilness. For Koby, a lack of compassion is a dealbreaker. He values kindness and empathy deeply, so someone who is entirely heartless or indifferent to others would be a poor match for him.

Even if someone is a bit rude but still shows a sense of heart and genuine care, Koby can appreciate that. He understands that people can have flaws and that everyone has their moments. What matters most to him is whether a person has the capacity for compassion and understanding.

But someone who exhibits no sign of compassion or kindness? That’s a whole different story. Koby is driven by a desire to make the world a better place and to support and uplift those around him. Being with someone who lacks any emotional depth or concern for others would clash with his core values and make a meaningful connection nearly impossible.

Based on the way my roommate has been freaking out, One Piece has been pretty cool lately. I'm not in the loop on the plot, but the animation looks insane from what I've seen. Hope you've been having a blast with the funky animated pirates while providing us our own pirate themed entertainment

It's been so good lately, especially in the manga! Literally 20 year (irl) mysteries being solved and in this week's anime episode, they finally caught Anime onlys up to one of the most pivotal event of the story so far

I share the same sentiment that when One Piece nears its end they'll speed up the anime to close the gap so it all concludes at the same time

It's a wonderful series, which for anyone on here that's a lore whore should jump in to One Piece

The manga is the quickest and easiest to digest, the cover stories of each chapter contain fun side stories that are also canon. 2/3 chapters a day, you'll be done in a single year

anyway in respect to content about demo it is my opinion that the bootlegger deserves a lot more screentime in fandom content. not only is the peg leg like fundamentally cool and contributes to the whole pirate aspect of his design a whole lot but just think how it adds to his whole fucked up thing. considering how much his mum equates losing eyes to being good at his work it's not a stretch to believe she thinks that about everything else too... directly tying self-mutilation to his value as a good demoman, the One Thing he was born for and made to strive for literally his entire life... the scars and the joint pain and the missing leg and Everything is how he shows his value to the world in a kind of deeply ingrained fuck up way. becoming less of himself is the (easiest) way to feel like he's living up to the standards that have been shoved down his throat his whole sad fucked up time on the earth. someone has to help him. i'll write a more comprehensible post about this later

Genshin AU - Vision Theory

Infodump about Vision theory below the cut!

"Visions" are gifts bestowed by Celestia and The Seven Archons (the gods of the 7 nations of Teyvat) to people who demonstrate a certain level of ambition. Sometimes it's a near-death experience that will earn a person their Vision; other times, something less drastic. As long as the ambition and willpower are strong enough, a person can receive a Vision.

There are 7 different elements, which correspond with the 7 nations. It's not a one-to-one scale, though; not everyone from Mondstadt receives Anemo, not everyone from Liyue receives Geo, etc. But each Archon (god) has their own domain over an element and over a nation, so certain patterns are noticeable.

That being said, here's my following theory of how Visions are distributed. This is based on both in-game content and personal extrapolation and analysis, so please take it with a grain of salt! I'll also try to avoid hyper-specific Genshin terms where possible, so non-players can understand too!

ALSO, I am not fully caught up in the game. Presently, I am in part 1 of Sumeru, which is the 4th nation. Any developments AFTER this point are not known to me. But 3 nations' worth of lore and characters, plus my rabbithole research neurodivergence and analytical obsession, hopefully are reliable enough. :)

The Visions

Anemo - the element of wind, whose Archon rules over Mondstadt, the City of Freedom. Characters with Anemo tend to be drawn towards freedom in some shape or form, perhaps due to a stifling upbringing or life experience. For instance, Kazuha Kadehara suffered under the oppressive regime of the Raiden Shogun, who closed the nation's borders and began hunting down Vision users. He escaped and takes refuge with pirates. Another example is Wanderer, a puppet who was rejected as a "faulty" creation and subsequently used by others for his skills and cruelty. He's still a rude brat (lol), but he is starting fresh on his own path without that baggage. A more literal example is Jean, the acting head of the Knights in Mondstadt, who uses her Anemo vision to defend the safety and freedom of the citizens. (Notably, several Anemo Vision holders have suffered from the death of a close friend or loved one, including the archon Venti himself.)

Geo - the element of Earth, ruled by the Archon of Liyue, land of contracts. Geo holders tend to be reliable and sturdy like the earth (rocks, stones), if not a bit immovable. The Archon is quite unyielding when it comes to the terms of contracts and possible breaches thereof. For example, Noelle is a knight who works tirelessly to be helpful and become stronger. Gorou is a general who leads much of the resistance army in Inazuma, and he manages many affairs due to his strong battle prowess and his reliable nature. Ningguang is the head of Liyue's government, and her love of money and treasures is fairly justified considering how she poured her life's work into building her skills, her reputation, and her business. (She actually tried selling her Vision at first, but Visions don't work for other people... lol)

Electro - the element of lightning, whose Archon rules over Inazuma, the land of eternity. Electro is simultaneously the easiest and most difficult element to pin down. There is a clear trend towards "beautiful, powerful women," but why? How does that tie to eternity? My acting theory is that "eternity" can also be described as loyalty. A willingness to follow a person, goal, or dream to the ends of the earth is its own form of "eternity." The strict general Sara Kujou will follow the Raiden Shogun, and her loyalty to the Shogun surpasses her loyalty to even her own clan when she found out her clan betrayed the Shogun. Beidou is the pirate captain of The Crux, whose lifelong dream of sailing the high seas and smiting beasts came to fruition when she slew a vicious leviathan; her unwavering pursuit of her dreams and her treasure, and the kindness and loyalty she shows to her crew, was recognized. Then there's Fischl, a chuunibyou whose Electro Vision allows her to create a sentient familiar of pure elemental energy named Oz. Her convictions to her persona and residing in the world she created can be called a form of "eternity" too.

Dendro - the element of plants, whose Archon rules Sumeru, the land of Wisdom. I am least familiar with Dendro, as we didn't get any playable Dendro characters until Sumeru LOL. But I do see a trend of characters who pursue wisdom, whether in the form of academics, a trade, or more worldly knowledge. Take Baizhu, the pharmacist who wants to unlock the secret to immortality. Take Tighnari, a stoic young man who wants to uncover the secret behind the Withering that's harming the forest and its creatures, despite pleas from Akademiya scholars who want his brain back in the city. But also take Collei, a chronically ill girl who just wants to learn how she can be helpful and make others smile as a friendly Forest Ranger. Be warned: relentless pursuit of knowledge can come at a dangerous price to one's "wisdom."

Hydro - the element of water, whose Archon rules Fontaine, the land of Justice. Justice is not always literal, but for many Hydro characters is an embodiment of what THEY believe to be right & wrong. An internal moral compass, if you will. For example, Barbara is a deaconess of the Church and will do whatever she thinks is best for the archon she follows... but she's also an idol. Kokomi is a divine priestess who looks out for her people, but she also leads the resistance army against the Raiden Shogun's oppressive rule. Childe is a literal war criminal as one of the top ranks of the Fatui (which lowkey are like the mafia but also military???), but he always takes time to look out for his family and will cheer up kids whenever he gets the chance. He doesn't even care about the Fatui, but they give him an opportunity to fight a lot and satisfy his bloodlust. Oops.

Pyro - the element of fire, whose Archon rules Natlan, which I believe is a nation of War? A Pyro holder doesn't mean a war-mongering arsonist, though! Pyro often goes to people with burning passion. For example, Xiangling is an incredible cook who travels in pursuit of funky ingredients to make the next hit dish. Xinyan is a musician who wants to ignite hearts with her rock & roll tunes. Bennett is a wannabe adventurer who has the worst luck, but he still keeps his head high. Then we have Diluc, who seems stern and unapproachable as a rich winery owner... but he's passionate about vanquishing evil and avenging his father. He's uh, actually banned from one nation (Snezhnaya) because he went in there and just started slaughtering a bunch of Fatui grunts, so there's that.

Cryo - the element of ice, whose Archon rules Snezhnaya. We don't yet know the "ideal" of Snezhnaya. What we do know is that the Archon, the Tsaritsa, rules over the Fatui. She has been described as someone who is too kind, and that's why she had to make herself cold to protect herself and her people. Many Cryo characters are undeniably lonely. For instance, Shenhe is a human girl who was raised by mythical beings because she was cursed with insatiable bloodlust; while she now has that MOSTLY under control, her social skills are severely lacking. Ayaka Kamisato was born into a prestigious clan, and after her parents passed, that made her and her brother the effective representatives of the clan. She often laments her inability to go out and enjoy festivals, to speak to people, and to make friends; her every action reflects upon her clan, and many find her unapproachable or treat her overly special because of her status. Then there's Kaeya, who... you know what, you're just gonna have to trust me on Kaeya because that's spoiler city. Let's instead look to Qiqi, a literal zombie child.

Personal space? Never heard of her.

Synopsis:  When Caesar’s bored, he’ll make it known to you. Not that you ever invited him to do so.

Pairing: Caesar Clown x gn!reader

Warnings:  profanity, Caesar has no concept of personal space

Word count: 1454

Notes: quick and simple, I just felt like I needed to FINALLY write some Caesar x reader interaction and this was the easiest way to do so. 

As a pirate, if anyone would’ve ever told your past self that one day, you’d “work” in a lab, you probably would have laughed in their face and told them to fuck off. You never had the qualifications for it anyway; poor education, lengthy criminal record, probably not even smart enough for it, zero patience, and the list goes on. However, seeing how Caesar functions, you’ve been violently proven that no, against all odds, someone who doesn’t have what it takes to be a sciencey person can still be a sciencey person. Or a “mad scientist”, as he likes to call himself. It really goes to show that, well�� you’ve heard of more qualified scientists before. 

However, Doflamingo wasn’t going to spit on the opportunity in front of him. Which is how you and Monet ended up spending most of your time on Punk Hazard, in the freezing fucking cold, while the rest of your crew was enjoying nice, warm, sunny days in Dressrosa. Though you can’t complain; at least the two of you figured out a schedule in which you’d rotate every three weeks so one has to put up with Caesar while the other can get some time off in Dressrosa. It was a pretty good system and you’re glad that Monet thought of it and got it approved, but it also meant that you now had to deal with Caesar on your own. It meant that there was one less person to put up with him. 

It meant that he’d concentrate his eccentricity on you. For three weeks. 

You’ve seen better days. 

And in moments like those, where he apparently felt the great need to come bother you, you wonder how Monet deals with it when you’re not around. Does she simply ignore him? You’ve tried that. It leads to disastrous bitchfits (you like to call them Caesar’s World Famous Bitchfits. Not that you’ve ever told him. A WFB would ensue). Does she entertain him? You’ve also tried that. It’s incredibly hard to keep up with him. 

So, at this point in time, you feel truly lost as to how you’re supposed to get through this. The only thing you haven’t tried (and that you can think of) was to simply… put up with it until it blows over. But it wasn’t exactly the most pleasant solution you’ve ever thought of. 

“What are you up to now?” You barely had the chance to even process that the telltale sound of hissing gas started bouncing off the room’s walls before Caesar was practically looming over your shoulder as you peered at the notes Monet had left you during those three weeks you were away. Considering that most of them were Caesar-related and that it wasn’t exactly praise, you were quick to shut the notebook closed before the man in question could read what was being said about him. Caesar let out a small cackle at your frantic actions. “Are you hiding something from me?” He asked and, seeing as you couldn’t take a look at his face at the moment, you had no idea if he was being serious or if he was joking. 

You would rather be safe than sorry, so you decide to turn your head to look over your shoulder to take a peek at his mood before answering, only to be absolutely jumpscared by the close proximity between the two of you. The way you reacted could probably be compared to how a cat reacts in the face of a cucumber. “Good god!” You exclaim before leaning back to put some distance between you and Caesar’s face, which had been literally looming over your shoulder up until now. How did you not feel his proximity? Was it because of the whole gas-gas fruit situation? Probably. That’s a dangerous fucking ability to have. Why was he that close anyway? 

You silently fumed as he cackled at your reaction. Leave it up to him to feel entertained by your discomfort, if you could call it that. It felt more like a heart attack to you. “Don’t you have shit to do?” You asked rather rudely as he quieted down. At the mention, his face morphed into a more annoyed expression. 

“I have time to kill.” He replied. Ah. That was his version of ‘I have to wait for something that catalysts can’t help with and I don’t want to’. You’re a bit familiar by now. Knowing how he gets in situations like these, you were careful to keep a tight grip on the notebook you were keen on hiding from him. Lest he finds a way to snatch it simply to get a rise out of you. 

“Yeah, well, I don’t.” You snapped back, promptly ignoring him when he leaned his entire upper half on the table, reenacting a deflating balloon in some way. 

“Come on, humor me a little! It’s not like there’s anyone else here that you can interact with.” He pushed. You were tempted to tell him that actually, he’s got plenty of subordinates who would be more than happy to entertain him in whatever way he wanted to be entertained, but you were fully aware that Caesar didn’t consider them anywhere good enough to talk to. Which then makes you wonder why you’d be any different. As far as you’re concerned, you’re just a pirate. Yes, you can read and write, but that’s about as far as it goes. The hell would he want with you? 

“Actually, I do pretty well in solitude.” You quipped with a shrug of your shoulders. Caesar, the ever extroverted bastard he was, wailed quite dramatically and let his head fall on his arms that he had crossed on the table. You’re a bit disappointed that he didn’t accidentally smack his forehead on the table instead. 

“Don’t you at least know how to have a conversation? C’mon, I’m curious. Tell me what’s going on in that noggin of yours.” He raised a gloved hand and attempted to poke at your temple but you leaned back to avoid him. Was he this annoying with Monet? Because she never seems to bring it up in the notes. 

Caesar made another dramatic expression at your aversion to his touch, pouting like a child that had just been scolded. “Even if it’s just the most mundane of thoughts, I promise I won’t laugh. Too much.” He said, eyes scanning your face for just the slightest of cracks in your resolve. “Anything goes! Talk about the damn weather if you want, talk about Monet. Fuck, you could talk about how poor you were as a child and it would be better than nothing!” 

“Bold of you to assume I was poor as a child.” You replied with a raised eyebrow, only to mentally curse at yourself when Caesar smirked in return. Oh, that was a fucking bait. Goddamn it. 

“Are you saying you weren’t?” If he weren’t made of gas, and if you were certain that your hand wouldn’t phase right through him, you might’ve hit him. A part of you wants to question him and why he was being so nosy in the first place, or at least snap some snarky retort back at him, but you know that it would count as ‘conversation’ to him and you’d play right into his hands. He’d win. You know damn well that the smartest option is to simply ignore him and do something else until he goes away. 

“Why does it need to be about me? Can’t you just go on a rant like usual and I can pretend to listen?” But you’re not smart or wise enough to use the smartest option. You half expected him to take you up on that suggestion and go off on some monologue about his research, or how he missed Smiley, or how he was such a genius for synthesizing SAD. Anything to gloat about how he’d “won”, about how you keeled over and decided to entertain him. However, what wasn’t on your bingo card was him rising from his sprawled out spot on the table and staying incredibly quiet for a few moments. It was such an alarming occurrence that you actually turned towards him and asked what was going on. “You good?” As soon as you looked at him, he averted his eyes to avoid direct eye contact. Even you knew something wasn’t good.

“Peachy! Yes, never been better!” Caesar hastily replied with an exaggerated, closed-eye smile, clasping his hands together conclusively. He was standing oddly straight, for someone who was usually the victim of a terrible, gas-gas induced posture. “W-well! Would you look at that! I think the crystallization should be happening any moment now!” He exclaimed, already turning on his heels to scamper out of the room. You were too intrigued by his odd behavior to say anything at the moment. From the look on his face, whatever it was that you said that caused this, it was a sore spot. “Wonderful conversation! Truly captivating! Don’t come looking for me! Bye now!” And he was out the sliding door before you could even take your first breath of Caesar-free air.

I hope you enjoy Zelda!!! But I do have an ask platonic wise if that’s alright, so sweet child of mine is obviously a reader who’s like 18 to young 20’s I’d say. How would the story have gone if the reader was like way younger? Like a kid the navy came across with the devil fruit abilities, would things have gone down differently, and if so how much? (As everyone kinda sees reader as a kid anyways.)

Well, a lot of the story is out of Reader's hands as someone that's kidnapped for literally all of it. So plotwise it's not that different. They wouldn't go to the labs as a kid either because they're not old enough to properly test outside of the field. They don't know how to explain their power or do anything, so real life is the best teacher still.

But for starters there probably would have been at least one more marine at the starting incident. Kiddo would be treated... A little better but not really by their partner since the blow to the ego of knowing you 'awesome power' is because of a tot.

Marco would have been quicker to just snap them up without knowing about the devil fruit after Williams smacked the baby like a dickhead.

Reader as a kid would be a lot faster to cry and get overwhelmed but genuinely believes they're 'meant to do good' in the Marines. Just really sad baby hours that they can't seem to 'do it 'right'' when really it's their partners getting pissy about a literal child being valued more than them.

"Mm not supp'sed ta talk to pirates. Even if they have a cute dog."

Marco smiled softly, crouching down to whisper in the kid's ear.

"If anyone asks, it's all my fault, cause I'm a big mean pirate, yeah?" He suggested playfully, picking them up into his arms while Stefan barked for attention.

The kid giggled, bouncing excitedly as they waved at Stefan who licked their fingers with every hop.

Kid reader would also attach faster to positive attention without the knowledge an older reader would that they're still a prisoner. Though they'd get scared easily and freak outs mostly involve getting upset that they can't leave to go back to their 'job'. By the time plot catches up, reader will mostly have let go of being a marine or having forgotten entirely. Liking being on a big ship where everyone is nice all the time and doesn't snap at them for things outside their control.

Teach would have convinced them that they're playing a hide and seek game seeing as it's the easiest route. Taking them around the islands to distract them from the fact that this 'game' sure is taking a long time.

Meeting Luffy is more positive cause they think his fruit feels cool but no one gets why they keep making drum sounds while playing with him--not that Teach let's it go on for long. He knows Ace is closing in at that point.

Triggering the Dial Down is due to finding out the truth and that Teach hurt Thatch. Wanting to 'ground' Teach from the neat powers he's used prolifically all this time. And then probably not totally understanding what Akainu did at first by melting his head.

Poor Ace and Marco will be so horrified when the last they see of little reader is just a sobbing child, wailing before accidentally "over locking" Akainu's fruit and blasting off.

Still gets saved by Mao and found as word gets out about a miraculous rescue of a child via sea king.

Reader is very tired and more than a little injured when they show up and take the tot home.

Aside from that, a lot more carrying around at every opportunity. Hugs and affection since reader isn't as against it. A lot easier to distract from negative situations and likely didn't realize they'd been drugged so Thatch isn't bullied like before.

Might keep the title thing cause it's funny to think of them trying to argue with a child who just thinks they're cooler than the actual name.

Surprising absolutely nobody, this is a pirate au for sterek that was inspired by the first season of OFMD. I think specifically that episode where they infiltrated the bougie party of snobby nobles 😂 I started it in March of 2023, literal months before I even found out Mattfoggy and back then every idea I had was sterek.

It's 1300 words but they're all following the more traditional raven structure: little bits of scenes and quotes and ideas and notes to myself so that I can capture the Vibes™. There's really nothing coherent about my writings but I'll share a lil snippet so you can judge it, and then afterwards the plot summary I have so far.

Derek has conflicting feelings about stowaways. Pirates deal with them often, as it’s the easiest way for convicts to escape the immediate vicinity, and pirates avoid law enforcement by design, so it’s an almost logical agreement – except for the fact that most stowaways steal your food, loot, gunpowder, and wouldn’t hesitate to kill a crew member if their safety was threatened. Overall, a loose cannon, and most pirates agree that they’re best dealt with by the sea itself.

Maybe it was because he was a stowaway himself, as a young boy, hiding among crates for a week straight on a horrible smelling supply ship, that he can’t seem to be quite so hard on them. Maybe it’s the fact that when he sees this one, Boyd dragging him about by the scruff of his collar, young face covered in grime and cheekbones stark from malnourishment, he’s reminded instantly of his own voyage to the unknown back in his boyhood. Maybe it’s because of the utter insanity of long months at sea that his next words are, unthinkingly, unprompted, “There you are, lad. Got lost, did you?"

Boyd's eyebrows shoot up.

“Derek.” “Don’t call me that.” “It is your name, is it not? Or do you prefer Captain?” “Would you quiet down! If you want to give me away, I prefer you take me directly to the Commander, instead of someone overhearing you and alarming the guards. At least then I’d have some semblance of dignity.” The young man snickers, unexpectedly. “You’re not at all like I remember you.” Derek can’t believe he’s having this conversation. “Yes, well, you were what, a mere lad of ten? And I was so new to captaincy. It would have been more of an insult if you thought I remained the same.” “I was fourteen, and it wasn’t that long ago. I just—I thought. I remember you more … grumbly. You were tired all the time. You sighed a lot.” He has to keep himself from sighing right now, it would only cause the man to laugh more. His disguise is already precarious as it is. “Perhaps you would recall that I had a lot to manage at the time. A rival who attacked my ship. A first mate injured in the process. A stowaway that I had to make a plan with?”

“You were after something tonight, weren’t you? Had your charm turned all the way up. Nary an eye could keep away from you.” Stiles’ smile was all curling contentment, the cat that got the cream. “So it worked?” He practically purred. Derek crinkled his nose. “I’m not sure why you’re asking me. I didn’t see you leave with anyone, if that’s what you wanted. But you must not be too sorry if you’re smiling like that.”

And this is the working summary I wrote down for myself:

Stiles had always known what he wanted, since he was a boy hiding on a pirate ship. Had he gotten it? Well, not quite the way he’d wanted. But he was a patient man, and he knew the tides always came back. Derek showed mercy to a stowaway once, in his first year as a pirate captain, and he’s been paying for it ever since.

😂 so what's my plot here???

Well, young pirate captain Derek encounters a stowaway on his ship, and instead of making him walk the plank like he knows he should, he pretends that he hired the boy.

The boy leaves at the next port and they part ways as unlikely friends. Years later, Derek recognises him at a masquerade ball that he's infiltrating and has to try and bribe Stiles to keep quiet. The only bribe Stiles will accept at all is to go work for Derek on his boat again, so at the end of the night Stiles tags along when Derek goes back.

After this I don't remember if they go on more adventures and if Derek just finds out why Stiles is so happy to be coming with him - because he'd developed a crush on Derek years back and when he'd heard about Derek's plan to infiltrate the ball, he concocted his own plan to join in. Also there's some other details I never straightened out properly, like the reason Stiles was a stowaway, and uhm............other things happen in the fic too. But you get the gist 😌 self indulgent pirate shenanigans 😂

....i should watch season 1 of OFMD again, maybe I'd be inspired to continue on it.
