I LOVED goldfinch! I was worried that I wouldn’t finish it when I got it bc it was so long but I really got into it and I finished it last month and I’m still thinking about it all the time. I like secret history a lot too! The characters feel a little less relatable to me than they did in goldfinch but the story is definitely a lot more fast paced and hectic which I like. ALSO FRANCIS IN GOLDFINCH! I want to read the little friend but I’ve heard lots of varying opinions, did you like it?
Yeah, I feel like you sorta hit a point with the Goldfinch where you’re just so sucked in and you forget how damn long it is ya know? I don’t wanna say much about TSH just b/c I don’t want to risk spoiling anything for you, so you’ll have to come back once you finish reading to fully discuss! But I def can see that–they are very different types of characters from the ones who play the central roles in TG. And I wonder to what extent like, they’re intentionally more distant and unrelatably by how we see them through Richard’s eyes? As compared to the goldfinch where we’re seeing someone like boris through theo’s eyes, who’s so close/in love w him. These are just stream-of-consciousness thoughts ldjfdkl. But Francis the loml in the goldfinch i knowwwww. And I have so many more TSH thoughts but like I said, will reserve for now!!
The Little Friend is VERY different from TG and TSH. There’s certain aspects of that that made me sorta.. uncomfortable maybe isn’t the right word, but that made me want to read some good analysis by people who are better informed than me in terms of literary criticism and that type of thing (mostly re: how it engaged w race/class and her position as a white author) which I haven’t fully found yet.  But it’s still a really intriguing read – its her only novel that primarily centers on a girl as a ~lead instead of boys/men, which is cool. And she’s a really fascinating character. Way more multi-dimensional women and girls than either of Donna’s other books lol. Like both her other novels, all of the characters are very complicated and you walk away not really sure how to feel about anyone (at least for me, that’s the case lol). It’s also set in Donna’ home state of Mississippi, so it’s interesting to see her fictionally recreating where she’s from ya know. And once I got sucked in, I got really sucked in (I finished reading it covertly at my desk at work sjkldfjklsd). So ya, if you’re looking for a Goldfinch/TSH-type book, it’s not it for sure. But it still is very Donna.
