Ohh, if you're doing recasting of things, any thoughts on The Philadelphia Story and/or The Big Sleep? Rewatching TPS for the nth time the other night got me pondering

Ooo, those are both hard ones! I find a lot of Old Hollywood classics a challenge, probably because they're so iconic and engrained in pop culture, but also because acting styles have changed so much since the 1940s and 50s. To try and fit actors into the roles kind of feels like it fundamentally changes the tone and style, but that's not necessarily always a bad thing, haha.

Still! Let's have a go.

(Quick note: since all the actors in The Philadelphia Story were in their late 20s to mid 30s when they shot it, I've tried to cast actors in that age window, even though I think you could age all of them up given the nature of the story.)

Mia Goth as Katharine Hepburn's Tracey Lord

I kinda just think Mia Goth can do most things, haha, but I actually think she was a revelation in Emma, which is - I'm pretty sure - her first foray into a genre outside of horror and sci-fi. She's got such a warmth in it, especially opposite Anya Taylor-Joy who I mmm, Struggle With as an actress. I feel like she could deliver just the right amount of chaos as Tracey, while also holding her own charisma-wise against Hepburn's boundless screen presence.

Paul Mescal as Cary Grant's Dexter Haven

This was actually the one I struggled with the most, because it's hard to find an actor who could balance dickishness with genuine charm these days in the way that Cary Grant (and a lot of the Golden Age Hollywood men) could. If anyone can do it though, I feel like it'd have to be Paul Mescal.

Dev Patel as Jimmy Stewart's Mike Connor

Funnily enough, I've actually thought Dev Patel and Jimmy Stewart have a similar energy on screen for a while? I'm not sure how to describe it, but there's a sort of warmth and affability to them even when they're playing characters that should feel - - I don't know. Harsher maybe. Anyway, I love them both as actors, and I think Dev could make Mike as easy to fall-in-love-with as Jimmy did.

Molly Gordon as Ruth Hussey's Liz Imbrie

I suddenly realised that everyone I've recast so far is either British or Irish, haha, so let's add an American to the mix! I have a big soft spot for Liz, and a big soft spot for Ruth Hussey too (The Uninvited, my beloved). Having her sort of wry, gentler energy to offset Katharine Hepburn's and the rest of the cast's highly strung chaos has always been something I've really liked, and I think Molly Gordon could bring something unique to the part.

Harris Dickinson as John Howard's George Kittredge

Can you believe John Howard was only 27 when they shot this? WILD. The George role is a pretty thankless one, especially between Cary Grant's scene chewing and Jimmy Stewart's effortless warmth, and I think it's a testament to Howard that you can see him as a viable option for Tracy at all. I've seen Harris Dickinson in quite a few things now, and think he can have a pretty grounding presence in a lot of more absurd premises (Triangle of Sadness and Scrapper spring to mind), and I feel that's what a role like this needs.

The Big Sleep feels a bit harder, but I'll have a think! Bogie and Bacall are just so iconic, haha.

Today's morning isn't over yet, but it started out so crazy!

I found out I lost my wallet when I could not find it at all, so I started looking everywhere and had my wife help me. There was no gas in the car

I got angry and took it out on her, when she did nothing wrong. Just trying to help her dummy husband.

I decided to call my mom for a ride, because she loves me and won't be to mad at a 15 min drive tp our house haha. What are parents for right??

Well, I then decide that I hate making my wife angry or feel bad. She doesn't deserve to be yelled at or dragged into an argument.

She's so amazing, she hugged me and said she LOVED ME.

From there we set up a new digital card so that we can gas up, mom didn't answer the call not to keep coming. I started driving and we passed each other before I made it out of our mobile park.

I went to the gas station and proceed to go inside and pay after my lazy ass tried using the reader and it didn't want to work.

After i gas up my car dies, hahahaha. So I call my mom for a jump and she was kind enough to do so.

Well I put the cables back in her car. I noticed a man walking on the sidewalk. We made eye contact and smiled at one another.

I then yelled at him, "how are you?!?"

He screamed back at me "I'm great, and you?!"

So I then hurled at him "it's great, going to be a little late but great!"

My morning was long to say the least, and as I finish typing this in my works restroom on the last ten minutes of my day, not even taking a real shit. Just sitting with the lid down.

I want you all to know, my wife is so amazing. She's my rock. Liz makes everything better. No matter how shitty things may get. That's one of the many reasons to why I LOVE her.

WHAT IS YOUR WRITING GENRE?

Before we get started with the descriptive genres we need to get familiar with some abbreviations used in book descriptions.

Abbreviations Used In Book Descriptions

I actually thought I was familiar with all the abbreviations used in book descriptions until I found this list. Some of these things I’ve never heard of before! They are often used by reviewers and some writers in book descriptions, so I think it behooves ignorant writers like me to at least know what they are.

PNR is the acronym typically used for paranormal romance: Shifters and vampires and mermaids and so much more. Shifters are people able to become various animals. Vampires are simply vampires. It depends on the writer whether they are good or bad. The one thing most of them seem to have in common is drinking blood or sometimes life essence. A few writers of fantasy like Ilona Andrews (husband and wife writing team) treated them as another species (theirs don’t drink blood).

PWF Paranormal Women’s Fiction. These books will have adventure, passion, and LIFE. And they’ll kick ass, just like all our books already do! We are not inventing books with 40+ heroines. We are hoping to define a place for them amongst other genres.

OTP: One True Pairing (that couple that you will root for till the end of time)


NOTP: (Pronounced No-TP) Basically the opposite of an OTP. You do not want this couple together!

BROTP/Bromance: A friendship (between guys) that you adore!

Ship: If you ship a couple, it means that you want them to get together (comes from the word “relationship”).


HEA: Happily Ever After


Book Boyfriend/Girlfriend: The fictional boy (or girl) you only wishcould be your real-life love.


Insta-love/Insta-lust: The phenomenon that happens all too often in books when the couple meets and instantly falls in love (or, sometimes, lust).


Love Triangle: When the main character can’t decide between two romantic partners—most frustrating when this is drawn out for multiple books in a series.


Slash Fiction: A type of fan fiction where two same-sex characters are paired together (often guys). Sometimes slash can just refer to the imagined pairing of two same-sex characters (not necessarily within fan fiction).


OMYM/OWYM: Older man, younger woman/Older woman, younger man

M/M Male/male romance

F/F female/female romance

RH reverse harem - typically one woman several men

MC: Main character (book is told from their POV).


POV: Point of view (the perspective that the book is told from).


POC/BIPOC: People of color/Black, Indigenous, and people of color


Daphne: A female character who has to be rescued all the time (in reference to Daphne from Scooby Doo)


Mary Sue: A character who is too perfect and/or too good which, strangely.


Manic Pixie Dream Girl: A type of female character depicted as vivacious and appealingly quirky, whose main purpose within the narrative is to inspire a greater appreciation for life in a male protagonist.


Twist: An unexpected event in a book—typically one that changes the direction of the plot or characters dramatically.

Info-Dump: When the author gives you lots of background information all at once via narration or dialogue.


Bechdel Test: a set of criteria used as a test to evaluate a work of fiction (such as a film) on the basis of its inclusion and representation of female characters. the term was popularized by American Cartoonist Alison Bechdel so it was named after her. Alison Bechdel never claimed to be the originator of the test. In fact, she never gave it a name. She credited her friend Liz Wallace for the idea, but also the work of author Virginia Woolf in her essay “A Room of One’s Own”.


Unreliable Narrator: A narrator whose POV is not trustworthy (could be due to lying, misinformation on the part of the MC, mental health or memory issues, etc.).

Agent: a person who acts on behalf of an author, negotiating with publishers and promoters.

Alpha Reader
The first reader, usually a non-professional, who provides feedback on a writer’s work.

ANT
Antagonist: the adversary or competitor to the hero/protagonist of any story.

APS
Associated Press Stylebook: a writer’s and journalist’s reference manual for rules on grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, and word and numeral usage.

ARC
Advance Reader Copy: free copy of a book given by a publisher to media, librarians, or other readers in advance of official publication.

ASIN
Amazon Standard Identification Number: Amazon’s unique identifier for each book they sell.

AU
Alternate universe: a fictional universe in which recognizable details are changed in order to create the story.

Beta Reader
A reader, usually non-professional, who provides feedback on a book after a writer has made revisions inspired by alpha readers.

BG
Bad guy: the Freddy Krueger, Lord Voldemort, or Darth Vader of your narrative.

BS
Backstory: history or background that occurs before the current events of a story.

Character Arc
The inner journey and transformation in personality of a character between the beginning and the end of a story.

CMOS
Chicago Manual of Style: a writer’s and editor’s reference manual for grammar usage, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, and word and numeral usage.

Cont
Contemporary (genre): a genre that, although fictional, depicts realistic events that could happen in today’s society. An example: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

CP
Critique Partner: a writer who provides feedback on a fellow writer’s work.

Drabble
One hundred words that tell a story. Drabbles, because of their brevity, demand strong verbs, zero redundancies, and minimal showing. They usually require more time to write than longer stories.

F & SF
Fantasy And Science Fiction (genre): make-believe worlds and characters combined with narrative that is based on scientific principles. Think Star Wars by George Lucas, et al.

Flash Fiction: very short fiction, usually containing fewer than 1000 words.

FN/Fant
Fantasy (genre): stories about mythical worlds often populated by magical creatures. Example: Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling.

The greatest destabilisers of any country are the ones seeking power over the nation itself. And, ironically, Nationalists. This certainly includes the highly rich who pay next to no tax and don’t bring much wealth INTO the country as such. France has issued an arrest warrant for President Assad of Syria. Literally about bloody time. Crimes against humanity is a very polite legal term for his direct culpability. Perhaps he himself could be given a tour of his torture chambers and experience some skin peeling, flaying and genital electroshocks to best understand what horror and agony his people have suffered. Or his village and mansions could be barrel bombed with white phosphorus and chemical gas. That might be actual justice on the despicable evil of his regime…

He has also reinstated Alex Jones to Twitter, the fat and deeply mentally twisted swine who said various school shooting in the US, did not occur and the dead children were actors. And the scumbag criminal leader of the ‘English Defence League’. And Katie Hopkins, and Kayne West, and Andrew Tate. And the foul Alt Right action man Mike Cernovich. Very similar types with a theme running deep between them all. The usual arrogance of a human who thinks they are always right because they have a surfeit of blind self-belief mixed with an internal negative image to protect. Let alone a billionaire. It is a genuine shame when high intelligence is accompanied with inverted emotional racist sociopathy. And quite possibly a global threat.

Had a friend who worked for the secret service, saw him regularly reading a newspaper and asked why he read it, when he usually knew how much of it was incorrect information… ‘Because it is useful to know what people are being told and what they believe’. That was over 25 years ago and a vast and increasing amount of false media has been vomited via insidious and overt techniques. Liars pointing fingers accusing editors of spreading worse falsehoods. Liars accusing judges of not changing the law to suit them. Liars extending their powers like a child who doesn’t want to stop playing and do his homework. 

With blood pressure rising, I just read an appalling piece of tosh by Boris Johnson where he idiotically conflates judges in Britain with elite puppet masters and autocrats, because they dare to follow the Law, rather than pander to corrupt politicians. ‘An increasing judicial willingness to intervene in the democratic process’. ‘…when judgements of the courts take precedence over the sovereign will of the people’. Isn’t the law in democracies (presumably well thought out with care by men far more learned than BJ and not hindered by the slightly uneducated and emotional populace) the very thing to protect and uphold the rights of a country’s citizens? We need a new Magna Carta to defend us from the new breed of capitalist, political and populist bastards.

I am sick of these pathological deceivers trying to rally ‘the good people’ (ARF) under the guise of defending their democratic freedoms, and seeking to remove judges and change laws because they affect their chances of grasping ever more power… and to Hell with the public. And sick of the public buying the ruse every bloody time. Remember the Daily Mail front page in 2016 ‘ENEMIES OF THE PEOPLE’ with the photos of three judges who were following the correct procedural law over leaving the EU? This didn’t mean they were Remainers, it meant they were doing their job. The type of front page one would see in Facist/Communist countries. Democratic governments really don’t like any power or voice independent of it within their borders.

Now, some light relief, a sidebar of nothing and internal dialogue…Following on from Arthur C Clarke who thought it was silly to call the world by the title Earth, when it should be Water…Calling infinity by the word Space seems a bit redundant. But, according to the almost perfect Tao, it is the space which makes things useful. Therefore, the cosmos must have a vast function. Light waves are electromagnetic waves and are transverse, while sound waves are mechanical, longitudinal. Holograms imprinted with thoughtforms of artistic science, projected by master magickians… Creating hard light, solid light to touch, better be quick to reverse engineer the universe via AI before we face our own extinction period.
