People from Lloret de Mar (Comarques Gironines, Catalonia) dancing the traditional centuries-old "almorratxes dance", which ends with the women smashing the almorratxes (perfume bottles) against a rock to remember a legend.
This is a traditional dance from some towns in the coast of the Comarques Gironines area of Catalonia (the north-east). In the case of the town Lloret de Mar —which you can see in this post's photos—, it's danced every year on the 24th and 26th of July, in occasion of the town's festa major (Catalan holiday that each town, city or neighbourhood celebrates on the day of their local patron saint).
The dance
The chosen local people, dressed elegantly, dance in pairs in the town's main square. The most important part of the dance is when the men give an almorratxa bottle full of perfume to the women as a gift, and the women show their refusal of the man's flirting by smashing the bottles against a rock. Historically, there used to be a table selling the bottles and the men could get as many as they wanted to try to convince the women, but the women always refuse them. There are some cases where they gave all the almorratxes in the town and had to move on to breaking any other glass recipient that people offered, motivated by the fact that whoever offered the most recipients to their dance partner was kind of seen as the winner — but he also had to pay for the glass a bit of extra money after the dance.
The legend
The dance is said to remember the legend that talks of a local Christian young woman and a Moorish pirate who sacked the Catalan coast. The pirate sacked Lloret de Mar but fell in love with one of its girls. He tried to flirt with her, but was always met with a "no". He kept insisting and doing everything he could to seduce her. One evening, he invited her and her family to a luxurious party at his castle (some say it's Santa Florentina Castle in Canet de Mar). During the party, he offered her a luxuriously decorated almorratxa brought from the Middle East, full of exquisite perfume. The girl took the bottle and smashed it against the floor. That is when the man understood that it was a definitive "no", he gave up and moved back to Northern Africa.
The history
The oldest known written document that talks of this dance is from the year 1592. It's related to other dances from other parts of Catalonia that also end by breaking an almorratxa or a càntir (ceramic water jar). Most of those dances remember the abolition of feudalism and represent breaking free of the lord's power: the dancer who carries the jar represents the lord, and he pours water or perfume on the other dances and commands the dance, and the dance ends by breaking the jar, thus the lord looses his power over the others. Some believe that the dance in this post could have originally symbolized the same.

According to Benedict Colin traveled around Europe for 4 months. That‘s about 120 days.
Even if we assume that exclude the travel time to and from Europe and also the fact that Napoleon Bonaparte had just been defeated and was currently collecting supporters from Elba
It takes about 10 days on horse to go from Paris to Marseille. My dude only talks about the contessa cause that‘s the only story he actually has cause he spent 4 to 6 weeks on horseback alone. At least.
