Let me make a few excuses. I said that the role of Raoul would not be in this story. Unfortunately, that hasn't changed… but Raoul and Christine's adorable childhood is one of my favorite scenes, and I was wondering if there was any way to describe it. I was also a bit worried about the describe of Metro. I have a favorite fairy tale about cats, and I wanted to tell that story, too.(and...Train Rush in space??)
So the Empress and Grooves are friends. Please don't get me wrong, there is no romantic interest between them! The trigger? Well……I'll talk about it when I think of it.
🎬The restaurant setting was inspired by Kenji Miyazawa's "The Restaurant of Many Orders" and "Night on the Galactic Railroad"(or "the Night of the Milkey Way Train". Many English translations exist for this title. I honestly don't know which name to call it. I'm sorry but I will decide by next time.) However, you do not need to know the story as we just borrowed the concept. Cats do not eat customers, and the destination of the Galactic Railroad is the moon.
🎬Two years after the Empress purchased the property from Grooves, she and her friend built a restaurant. The name? …… Let's call it Lapis Lazuli. It comes from the full starry sky visible from the moon.
🎬The restaurant is thriving. Even though there is quite a lot of seating, there is never a noticeable empty seat. So the kitchen is always very busy.
🎬The head cook is Cherry, Cooking Cat. Before building the restaurant, she had been the head cook in a hotel run by the mafia, but she was bored with her job because she only cooked the same dishes every day. Then she received an offer from the Empress and decided to have her own restaurant.
🎬There are many cats in the kitchen besides her. Some of them were originally prefects of the Empress.
🎬The restaurant has a stage. At the center of it is a piano, where you can enjoy your food while listening to the wonderful jazz music played by a moon penguin, the performing staff.
🎬Why did the Empress decide to open a restaurant? What happened to her jewelry store? That' s simple…Metro got rid of Nyakuza.
🎬This was after she had acquired the land of the moon. The Owl Express conductor went missing and the train could no longer operate. The troubled owls decided to use the metro to commute to work until the express resumes service.
🎬Taking advantage of this trend, a project to renew the Metro was launched. The officials set out to improve public safety so that the owls could use the metro in peace.
🎬As a result, the Empress had to give up her beloved jewelry store in exchange for a large sum of money unilaterally given to her.
🎬She is no longer Nyakuza. She had to give up all the stores she had owned and operated. All she was left with was unsold jewelry, a lot of money, a few prefects, and a land on the moon.
🎬Failure was no longer an option for her. She had to succeed in her new business and revive the Nyakuza at any cost.
🎬She immediately contacted Cooking Cat and suggested the restaurant business to her.
🎬There must have been many difficulties before opening the restaurant. In fact, The cats had to improve their culinary skills and it took months of menu development by Cooking Cat.
🎬There were probably significant cultural differences between what the cats liked and what the moon penguins preferred. The atmosphere of service, the wording, the flavors, the gestures, the etiquette, etc. To adapt to their culture, the Empress checked the restaurants and boutiques of the moon every day and also listened to trendy music.
🎬Making connections was probably the hardest part. Anyway, she needed to make a lot of moon penguin friends, besides Grooves. In the process, she found a moon penguin who played the piano wonderfully well and invited him to join the performance staff at the restaurant.
🎬Now, why did Grooves give away the land? Last time I mentioned that his mailbox was filled with lots of fan letters and bug eggs.
🎬About a month after he won the Bird Actor Award, strange, monstrous letters began arriving at him daily. The carefully sealed, plain white letters had several small, white, round objects on them. The contents of the letters made nonsense, and Grooves didn't even know what the round things were. So sometimes he would throw them away right away, and sometimes he would just leave them on the table with the newspaper.
🎬The eggs peeled off from the letter on the table, fell into a crevice in the floor, and hatched. The eggs from the letter he threw away also hatched in the trash. They ate the wood of the house and multiplied rapidly.
🎬It was two weeks later that Grooves realized this. He had no choice. He was busy with work at the time and didn't get home much. He finally learned of the bugs when he opened his favorite book before bedtime and found black bugs squashed in places. Confused, he bought some insecticide and sprayed the chemicals all over the house. That should have killed most of the bugs, but it did not restore the gnawed wood or the stained books.
🎬A week later, something even worse happened. The doorbell rang and Grooves opened the front door. There was "the director". Grooves was surprised to see, and quickly turned away from the awkwardness …… to find him holding a knife in his right fin.
🎬Grooves reflexively closed the door, locked it, and barricaded himself in. When he opened his upstairs window to call the police, he saw him running back, so he gave up on the call. Because there was no evidence.
🎬Naturally, Grooves had a hard time calming down. He wanted someone to share this fear with him and tell him it would be okay. So he decided to contact his best friend.
🎬The Empress was worried when her best friend told her that his house was in shambles and that he had just been almost killed. Neither of them had expected this to happen the last time they had seen each other and played together after a long time when he had won an award. The Empress decided to cut out of work and stay with her best friend for a little while.
🎬They talked it over and Grooves decided to take a year off and leave his hometown. Obviously, he was tired of acting like a star. So what about his house? The Empress offered him a deal. She wanted him to forget about all this and enjoy his vacation.
🎬The Empress got the land …… but three months later she was kicked out of the metro.
🎬Grooves looked quite well when he visited her there after hearing that she had built a restaurant. After enjoying some food and chat, he revealed that he was interested in a new challenge. …making movie as the director.
🎬Of course, he loves acting. But after some time back at work, he wanted to make a film from scratch.
🎬They would meet at this restaurant every two months. Grooves seemed to really enjoy it. But on the other fin, he seemed to be concerned that the film was not getting good reviews. He was disappointed that people didn't understand his taste and that he couldn't reward his crews' hard work with anything other than a paycheck …… Until he met Phantom.
🎬Subsequently, Grooves' visits to the restaurant became less frequent. But the Empress was not worried that he was not showing up at the restaurant; in fact, she was pleased. She knew that his latest movie was a hit. He must be so busy that he doesn't even have time to come to the moon……. She missed him, but more than that, she was happy for her best friend's newfound success.
🎬He visited the restaurant twice, at great intervals, and each time she sensed something different about him. As if he were exclusive and secretive… had he been like this before? Perhaps this is the kind of charisma that a real star has?
🎬After Grooves won the award, the Empress noticed that he had definitively changed. A moonstone engagement ring adorned his chest.
🎬What would she think of his change? Raoul was deeply in love with Christine so he was terribly angry when he saw her ring. Then what about the Empress? Since they were friends, it seemed the best way to congratulate him on his engagement. But on the other hand, she couldn't forget the eerie vibe she had been getting from him lately. Could she really congratulate him?
🎬Metro's renewal has been completed successfully. Stations have been added and new lines established. One of them is the Galactic Railroad(the Milkey Way Train), which connects this planet to the moon.
🎬For those owls who missed the Owl Express, officials forcibly bought it. After remaking it, they put it into operation as the Galactic Railway. You can board the train by going to the spaceport.
🎬As a result, increase traffic between the moon and this planet, and cultural exchanges between moon penguins and owls began to flourish. And jazz and movies began to catch on in the bird city. This may have been one of the reasons for the success of Grooves' third film.
///
🎬Hatkid is a detective. She is very good at observing and making friends, but not so good at deducing. Despite this, she is a detective and has solved a variety of difficult cases.
🎬Why? Because she has a magical prop. When you fix a time lift, you get a storybook, right? She could create a time lift for a subject simply by holding that little loupe over the subject. She gets the clues to solve the case from the storybook and timerifts. But they are far more suggestive and puzzling than anything we know, forcibly produced. Some pages are blurred, others torn and torn apart.
🎬Of course, the loupe remains too useful. Secrets that a subject does not want to be known will try to escape the eyes of hat kid by tearing or burning.
🎬By the way, the Grooves' storybook is very difficult to understand. Perhaps the pages are disjointed and bound incorrectly. You have to collect several other storybooks to read them correctly. This may mean that his memory is wrong. Or it could mean that he has a secret that he wants to hide at all costs…… about his angel.
🎬Secondly, she is good at making people love her. A private investigator cannot solve a case if people do not like her, no matter how smart she is. This is because private investigators do not have strong investigative powers, so they need as many people as possible to help them with their investigations.
🎬In other words, despite the fact that she is not very good at deductive reasoning, she has been able to solve cases thanks to her immense popularity and her handy loupe.
🎬For her, the first request was very easy. It was easy to gather information from birds that knew Phantom well.
🎬Soon after she arrived in Bird City, she learned that there was an audition for the movie " Picture Perfect ". She immediately took her best picture and submitted her entry sheet for the lead role. Of course, she passed and made a spectacular debut as a superstar.
🎬This made her a celebrity among the birds and made her job easy.
🎬Why do they work on this planet instead of their home? Hatkid used to be an employee of a detective agency and Bowkid was a newspaper reporter. But both of them were dissatisfied with their bosses.
🎬One day they went on a space trip together. They love sightseeing. But an accident happens and their time pieces are scattered.
🎬They immediately went to collect the time pieces. They then collected about 10 of those pieces. At that point when electricity was restored to some extent, they could have contacted their supervisors and asked for help. But they left the company. They then became freelance and decided to tag team.
🎬Bowkid decided to write a novel based on the various cases Hatkid began solving as a detective. It was first published by a publishing house run by the mafia. As they found more time pieces and were able to send the data back home, her novels were published in her hometown as well.
🎬But they are not mystery novels for adults. Bowkid wrote them as juvenile liteature because the development of Hatkid's work was always easy to understand. The novels, which are easy to read and in which a pretty girl converts a cunning villain with brilliant deductions, became popular. The popularity meant that it became necessary to develop her stories into a series.
🎬Of course, in writing the novel, Bowkid adapts things quite a bit. Naturally, she only writes about very successful cases. In her novels, Hatkid is a huge star. She boldly confronts any evil and is always on the side of the weak. Her little readers only know the sparkling HatKid. When she meets them, HatKid does not want to disappoint them. Step by step, the real Hatkid began to play the Hatkid of her novels.
🎬She became better and better at acting. She even began to play the charisma of a real star. Perhaps that is one of the reasons she was able to play the lead role in Picture Perfect.
🎬Bowkid has regret it. Hatkid still doesn't play in front of Bowkid and shows her the real her, but maybe one day she won't. Besides, she can't write her own creation now that Hatkid's novels have become so popular. For both of their sakes they should break up the tag team and end her series. ...But will readers and publishers allow that?

Allen, Louis - murder victim (1964)
A native of Amite County, Mississippi, born in 1922, Louis Allen dropped out of school in the seventh grade to become a logger and part-time farmer. Drafted by the U.S Army in January 1943, he served 19 months in uniform, including combat duty in New Guinea. Upon discharge from service, he returned to his wife and two young children, the beginning of a family that soon increased to six. Although a proud African American, Allen had no part in the civil rights movement that challenged Mississippi's pervasive system of racial segregation in 1961. He would become a martyr to that movement by coincidence, strictly against his will.
One who joined the Amite County movement willingly was 50 year old Herbert Lee, a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) and participant in the 1961 voter-registration drive by Robert Moses of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Blacks who sought to vote in Amite County faced intimidation and worse, from racist vigilantes and from Sheriff E.L. Caston Jr., whose deputies raided NAACP meetings and confiscated membership lists. A neighbour of Lee's farmer E.W. Steptoe, led the local NAACP chapter and complained to the U.S. Department of Justice about Caston's harassment. On September 24, 1961, Justice attorney John Doar visited Amite County with Robert Moses, interviewing Steptoe and requesting names of any other blacks who had suffered harassment. Herbert Lee's name was first on the list, but Doar missed him that afternoon, as Lee was called away from home on business. There would never be another chance for them to meet. Early on September 25, the day after Doar returned to Washington, Lee drove a truckload of cotton to the gin near Liberty, Mississippi. Behind him, as he pulled into the parking lot, was another vehicle occupied by state legislator E.H. Hurst and his son in law, Billy Caston. An argument ensued between Hurst and Lee and climaxed when Hurst drew a pistol and shot Lee once in the head, killing him instantly. Robert Moses later described the event and its aftermath to journalist Howard Zinn.
Lee's body lay on the ground that morning for two hours, uncovered, until they finally got a funeral home in McComb to take it in. Nobody in Liberty would touch it. They had a coroner's jury that very same afternoon. Hurst was acquitted. He never spent a moment in jail...I remember reading very bitterly in the papers the next morning, a little item on the front page of the McComb Enterprise-Journal said that a Negro had been shot as he was trying to attack E.H. Hurst. And that was it. Might have thought he'd been a bum. There was no mention that Lee was a farmer, that he had a family, nine kids, beautiful kids, and that he had farmed all his life in Amite County.
One witness to the shooting was Louis Allen, who arrived at the cotton gin moments before Lee was killed. He watched Lee die, then saw a second white man lead E.H. Hurst to a nearby vehicle, whereupon they departed from the scene. Allen retreated to a nearby garage, where one of Liberty's white residents located him and walked him back to the cotton gin. En route to the crime scene, Allen's escort told him, 'They found a tire iron in that nigger's hand. They found a piece of iron, you hear?'
Allen knew better, but he had a wife and four children to consider. Within the hour, he found himself at the county courthouse, where a coroner's hearing had been hastily convened. White men armed with pistols packed the hearing room, glaring at Allen as he took the witness stand and lied under oath, confirming the tale that Herbert Allen had been armed, assaulting E.H. Hurst when he was shot. The jury wasted no time in returning the verdict of 'justifiable homicide.' Hurst subsequently told the New York Times that he had quarrelled with Lee over $500 debt, which Lee refused to pay. When Lee attacked him with the tire iron.' Instead, he had struck Lee with the trigger unconsciously.' Hurst denied Lee's civil rights activity, dubbing his victim ' a smart nigger' who normally avoided conflict with whites. Guilt-ridden by his false testimony, Allen confessed the lie to his wife and to Robert Moses. Elizabeth Allen described the conversation in a 1964 affidavit, as follows:
The day Herbert Lee was killed, Louis came home and said that they wanted him to testify that Herbert Lee had a piece of iron. He said that Herbert Lee didn't have no iron. But he said for his family and for his life he had to tell that he had an iron. Louis told me that he didn't want to tell no story about the dead, because he couldn't ask them for forgiveness. They had two courts about Herbert Lee's killing. When they had the second court, Louis did not want to testify. He said he didn't want to testify no more that a man ad a piece of iron when he didn't have it, but he said he didn't have no choice, he was there and he had to go to court. He said he told the FBI the truth, that Herbert Lee didn't have a piece of iron when he was shot
The 'second court' was a state grand jury hearing, convened in Amite County a month after Lee was shot. Allen approached Robert Moses, reporting that he had told his story to FBI agents, suggesting that he could get protection with the Justice Department he would testify truthfully and 'let the hide go with the hair.' Moses then telephoned Washington, and heard from Justice that 'there was no way possible to provide protection for a witness at such a hearing' )In fact, such protection is routinely offered to witnesses in organised crime cases and similar matters.)  Allen went on to repeat his false story before the grand jury, which returned no indictments.
Things went from bad to worse for Allen after that, as Amite County whites apparently learned of his abortive effort to tell the truth. Strangers visited Allen's home and accosted his children, threatening his life. In June 1962 Allen was arrested on trumped up charges of 'interfering with the law'; he spent three weeks in jail, and was threatened with lynching, and suffered a broken jaw after one of Sheriff Caston's deputies struck him with a flashlight. White customers stopped buying logs from Allen, and local merchants cut off his credit at various stores. Only his ailing mother kept Allen from leaving Amite County, but her death in late 1963 freed him at last. Eagerly, Allen made plans to leave Mississippi for Milwaukee, where his brother lived.
Unfortunately, he had already waited too long. On January 1st, 1964, one of Allen's white creditors stopped at the house to collect a bill payment. While Allen counted out the money, his visitor pointed to Allen's three year old daughter playing nearby, and remarked, 'It would be mighty bad if she turned up burnt, wouldn't it? She's an innocent baby, but she could get burnt up just like that. I could tell you more, but I'm not. If I was you I would get my rags together in a bundle and leave here.'
Resolved to do exactly that, on January 31, 1964, Allen sought work references from some of his former clients. The first, Melvin Blalock, declined to provide a letter, concerned that he 'might be helping a communist.' Another, Lloyd King, later recalled speaking to Allen around 8:10 pm. Two cars were seen trailing Allen's pickup when he left King's farm, driving home. At the foot of his long driveway, Allen left his truck to open the gate, then apparently threw himself under the vehicle. The move failed to save him, as two shotgun blasts ripped into his face. Son Henry Allen found his father's body hours later, when he returned from a dance.
No suspects in Louis Allen's murder were never identified, but Robert Moses placed partial blame for the slaying on the FBI's doorstep. Moses and other activists believed that G-men routinely leaked the contents of confidential statements to local police in civil rights cases, thus leaving witnesses vulnerable to attack by racist authorities or the vigilante Ku Klux Klan. The segregationist McComb Enterprise-Journal theory in its description of the murder, noting that 'Strictly non-documented rumours have been current that Allen may have become a 'tip-off man' for the integration-minded Justice Department. Similarly, of the spearheads of a reported complaint that 'economic pressure' being applied against some Amite County Negroes.'

ARC Review: The Drowned Woods by Emily Lloyd-Jones (e-ARC and audiobook ARC)
Tumblr media
Order
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: August 16, 2022
Synopsis:
Once upon a time, the kingdoms of Wales were rife with magic and conflict, and eighteen-year-old Mererid “Mer” is well-acquainted with both. She is the last living water diviner and has spent years running from the prince who bound her into his service. Under the prince’s orders, she located the wells of his enemies, and he poisoned them without her knowledge, causing hundreds of deaths. After discovering what he had done, Mer went to great lengths to disappear from his reach. Then Mer’s old handler returns with a proposition: use her powers to bring down the very prince that abused them both. The best way to do that is to destroy the magical well that keeps the prince’s lands safe. With a motley crew of allies, including a fae-cursed young man, the lady of thieves, and a corgi that may or may not be a spy, Mer may finally be able to steal precious freedom and peace for herself. After all, a person with a knife is one thing… but a person with a cause can topple kingdoms. The Drowned Woods—set in the same world as The Bone Houses but with a whole new, unforgettable cast of characters—is part heist novel, part dark fairy tale.
My Rating: ★★
My Review and Favorite Quotes below the cut.
My Review
Iwanted to love this one. In fact, I expected to love it like I loved the Bone Houses. But I just.... didn't. It *should* be everything I like. Set in the same world as Bone Houses, a heist with magic, characters with mysterious pasts... But it just felt flat. I tried reading the book and listening to the audiobook and neither one could keep my interest. In fact, it sent me into a bit of a slump where I just couldn't bring myself to pick up any book because I dreaded returning to this one. It just felt like a slog? I'm finally calling it and DNFing at 60% of the way through. I mean, if you're 60% into a standalone heist novel and you're still slooooowly introducing characters / gathering the crew and none of them have been fleshed out enough to have personalities (and you can barely remember their names and certainly not what they look like) and you have almost no idea about the bigger picture or more than the sketchiest details about the characters' pasts or the heist itself then that’s a problem. The one thing I did like was the relationship between Mer and her former mentor. There is obviously fondness there on both sides, mixed with quite a bit of mistrust on Mer's and a tendency for her mentor to go into teacher mode and/or fail to disclose critical pieces of his plot so that Mer has to follow him with a dose of blind faith. In the end, too much is kept a mystery both from the characters themselves and from the reader. Mysterious pasts and gifts and magic and plans can intrigue the reader. But if so much is kept in the dark that all you can do is stumble around hoping to figure out what the heck is going on, it does not make for a pleasant reading experience. The audiobook narrator, Moira Quirk, is one of my favorites. She has a great range of character voices and a good grasp of the pronounciation of the various Welsh names. However, even her excellent narration can't make up for the foggy vagueness that encompasses this novel. *Thanks to NetGalley, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, and Hachette Audio for providing an e-arc and audio arc for review.
Favorite Quotes
The third time a customer grabbed her, Mer considered drowning him.
---
“Cities like these, with all the people and the iron — both in their blood and all around them —it pushes back the old ways. Makes me wonder how things will fare in the future.” “What do you mean?” “I mean,” Fane said, “that humanity has a tendency to push into every corner of a place. And with their iron and their armies, it may be only a matter of time until someone like Garanhir turns his attention on Annwvyn.”

The partnership in between the fantastic architect Frank Lloyd Wright and also his http://romeo-beauty.info/resultats-de-cote-eco-slim-acheter mommy Anna are a powerful instance from the development of an extremely narcissist. The Difficult Mother on some amount prefers to be the way she is, opts to her kid or to stay removed. For the mama daughter incest survivor, her core relational personal, her self-structure has been actually rejected considering that there is no safe, loving other to design. I've known Mama Teresa much more among the three mediators that you have actually included. "Alphabet’s Q1 2020 earnings call"
Note: These are Sundar Pichai's full remarks from today's Alphabet Q1 2020 earnings call. See below for an email to employees Sundar sent following the call.
When I last spoke with you in early February, no one could have imagined how much the world would change, and how suddenly.
Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by COVID-19, especially those who’ve lost loved ones or their livelihoods. It’s a challenging moment for the world.
Through it all, we’re incredibly grateful for all of the essential workers on the front lines of this crisis... from health care workers and first responders... to the grocery store clerks and delivery workers...to teachers grappling with new technology to help children learn remotely...to all of the scientists and researchers working hard to develop vaccines and treatments...and many others who are leading through these difficult times. Thank you.
These people fill us with hope and show us the power of human resilience. We’ll need that energy and resolve in the months and years ahead.
Today, there is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding the path to recovery. But there are some things that we can understand better with the patterns we are seeing.
For example, it’s clear from data that people are being more cautious and are seeking authoritative advice and guidance to protect their families’ health and safety. A return to normal economic activity depends on how effectively societies manage the spread of the virus. There’s no one size fits all and the timing and pace of recovery will vary from location to location. This is a long-term effort.
It’s also clear that this is the first major pandemic taking place in a digital world. Many parts of the economy are also able to continue with some semblance of normalcy, thanks to advances in remote work, online shopping, delivery options, home entertainment and telemedicine. At the same time, newer technologies like AI, Bluetooth exposure notifications and 3D printing are being used to help fight the disease head on.
It’s now clear that once the emergency has passed, the world will not look the same. Some social norms will change, and many businesses are speaking to us, looking to reinvent their operations. We have seen that the most pressing concern of small and large businesses right now is business continuity, solving for issues like employee safety, dramatic falls or surges in demand, supply chains and managing a remote workforce. Ultimately, we’ll see a long-term acceleration of movement from businesses to digital services, including increased online work, education, medicine, shopping and entertainment. These changes will be significant, and lasting.
Given the depth of the challenges so many are facing, it’s been a huge privilege to be able to help people and businesses at this moment. In today’s call, I’ll cover four areas:
First, I’ll mention some of the ways we have marshalled our resources and product development to help.
Second, I’ll talk about how people are using our products at this unprecedented moment.
Third, I’ll talk about our business—especially our advertising business which was significantly impacted in the last few weeks of the quarter.
And I’ll close with our investment plans and focus for the rest of the year.
In the early days of the crisis, we were able to put in motion a number of efforts quickly. This is a testament to strategic areas where we have invested over recent years: products that people trust; our technical leadership and innovation; deep partnerships; a highly skilled workforce; and the scale and resilience of our operations.
I’ve been proud of all of these efforts and what they say about our company. I’ll give just a few examples.
First, we’ve been working with healthcare providers, researchers, authorities and communities to help combat the virus.
Our community mobility reports help authorities see, in aggregate, how social distancing requirements are working.
Verily has tested thousands of people in California and has partnered with Rite Aid to bring free testing to eight additional states.
Google Cloud is forming deep partnerships, such as with leading health care provider HCA Healthcare, to understand data around ICU bed availability, ventilator supplies and test results.
And you may have read about our exposure notification partnership with Apple, designed specifically and carefully to protect users’ privacy while helping public health authorities and governments manage countries’ re-opening.
Second, we are working hard to provide accurate and authoritative information to people using our services.
In Search, we've launched a number of features such as up-to-date answers from health authorities, and remote medical care options.
On YouTube, we are quickly removing content that violates policy, and raising authoritative content from news organizations and experts. Up to last week, our COVID-19 info panels have had 20 billion impressions.
Third, we’re playing a role in supporting businesses and workers that are hurting because of the downturn.
In March, we made a commitment upwards of $800 million to support small businesses and crisis response efforts, through a combination of grants, small business loans and ad credits.
And the Google News Initiative is offering financial support to thousands of small, medium and local news publishers through a Journalism Emergency Relief Fund. We’ve also waived ad serving fees for news publishers globally on Ad Manager for the next five months.
Turning to the way people are using our products...
People are relying on Google’s services more than ever. This is a strong recognition of the value of our products, particularly in important and urgent moments. As a few examples:
We’ve seen a significant rise in search activity. To put it into perspective, in the U.S., coronavirus-related search activity at its peak was four times greater than during the peak of the Super Bowl.
People are spending significantly more time on their Android apps, with downloads of apps from Google Play rising 30 percent from February to March.
YouTube watchtime has also significantly increased. One area in particular is livestreams. I hope you saw Andrea Bocelli on YouTube Live on Easter, which has had over 39 million views. It was truly beautiful.
100 million students and educators are using Google Classroom, double the number from the beginning of March.
We've seen a massive increase in demand for Chromebooks; analysts have reported a 400 percent increase during the week of March 21 year over year.
And schools and businesses in particular are using our secure video conferencing platform Meet. Last week, we surpassed a significant milestone and are now adding roughly 3 million new users each day, and have seen a 30-fold increase in usage since January. There are now over 100 million daily Meet meeting participants. Stay tuned for much more!
Turning to our business, let me touch on our performance this quarter.
Q1 was in many ways the tale of two quarters. For our advertising business, the first two months of the quarter were strong.
In March, we experienced a significant and sudden slowdown in ad revenues. The timing of the slowdown correlated to the locations and sectors impacted by the virus and related shutdown orders.
As the impact of COVID-19 came into view, we delayed some ad launches and prioritized supporting our customers as many adjusted their strategies.
We're focused on products where we can help most advertisers and merchants during the crisis. For example, under our new leader of Commerce, Bill Ready, last week we announced that merchants can list products in Google Shopping for free. It’s been widely rolled out in the U.S., with more countries to come, and the response has been positive.
Overall, recovery in ad spend will depend on a return to economic activity.
There are two key aspects of our business that give us confidence about the future:
First, as we saw after 2008, one of the strongest features of Search is that it can be adjusted quickly, so it’s relatively easier to turn off and then back on, and marketers see it as highly cost-effective and ROI based.
Second, our business is more diversified than it was in 2008.
For example, Cloud:
In the public sector, we are helping governments deliver critical health and social services. We’re supporting the State of New York’s new online unemployment application system as it deals with a significant increase in demand.
In retail, we’ve helped Loblaw, one of Canada’s largest food retailers, and Wayfair scale to support exponential traffic increases.
We are helping communication companies adapt to new behavior patterns. Vodafone is using Google Cloud Platform to help it analyze network traffic flows to keep everyone connected and we are helping Unity Technologies keep real-time online games stay up and running.
Institutions like Lloyd's Bank are digitally transforming their businesses and we are helping even more businesses do the same through new partnerships with Accenture, AT&T, and T-Systems.
We now have more than 6 million paying G Suite customers. G Suite is helping Netflix and German manufacturer, KAESER Compressors transition quickly to remote work, while Twitter, Shopify, retailer Schnuks and Italian bank Credem are using Meet for things like all hands and customer meetings.
Elsewhere across the business...
YouTube subscriptions continue to grow. The team has launched YouTube Kids in 15 new countries around the world since the beginning of the year, and rolled out new features to make kids-focused channels safer.
Android previewed Android 11, which includes seamless 5G connectivity and a smarter keyboard with a faster messaging experience. And as I mentioned, we’ve seen significant growth in Play. There are now over 2.5 billion monthly active Play devices worldwide.
And in hardware, we saw a decline in device activations in the quarter, due to falling consumer demand globally. But I am excited about the product roadmap ahead for the year—including yesterday’s launch of Pixel Buds 2.
Finally, moving on to our focus for the rest of the year...
We’re taking a long view and continuing to invest in our long-term priorities, but are being thoughtful in the short term. So we made the decision to slow down the pace of hiring for the remainder of 2020, while maintaining momentum in a small number of strategic areas. We’re also recalibrating the focus and pace of our investments in areas like data centers and machines, and non-business essential marketing and travel.
We’ll also continue to thoughtfully manage our Other Bets portfolio. Waymo raised $2.25 billion in its first external investment round, a terrific validation of their technology and long-term business model. Wing saw a surge in deliveries and new users, increasing its daily volume fivefold, with great momentum in test programs in Australia and Virginia.
At Google, we’ll continue to be focused on the four key areas that I outlined in the last earnings call.
First, creating the most helpful products for everyone, particularly at a time where people rely on us for information, work, education and entertainment.
Second, providing the most trusted experiences for our users. This includes our efforts to tackle misinformation and digital threats, as well as our work to safeguard consumer privacy.
Third, executing at scale. I’ve been proud of how we continue to work so cohesively and productively, even with a distributed workforce. We will continue to build on the internal tools, support systems and infrastructure we have built over the years.
And finally, creating sustainable value. We’ll be optimizing the way our data centers work, and prioritizing strategic areas of investment where we need to support our users and partners.
Let me express my thanks to our employees for their herculean efforts under these difficult circumstances. While the road ahead for everyone is uncertain, we’ll continue to support our users, communities and partners, and we’ll all emerge, together, from this moment.
Thank you, and please take care, everyone.
The following is an email to employees that Sundar sent today.
Hi everyone,
Earlier today, Ruth and I wrapped our 2020 Q1 earnings call with investors. I was proud to share some of the ways we’ve come together as a company to help people and businesses during this time—thank you all for your efforts.
I’ve included my opening remarks from the call below. The TL;DR is that Alphabet’s Q1 was a tale of two quarters. On the one hand, we’ve seen people turning to some of our products for help more than ever. This is reflected in the rise in Search activity, engagement on YouTube, downloads on Google Play and usage of G Suite.
The first two months of the quarter were strong for our Search, network and YouTube businesses. Then, in March, we experienced a significant and sudden slowdown in our advertising revenues, correlated to the locations and sectors impacted by the virus and related shutdown orders.
As I mentioned on the call, recovery in ad spend will depend on a return to economic activity. That said, there are two key aspects of our business that give us confidence about the future: First, as we saw after 2008, one of the strongest features of Search Ads is they are cost-effective and can be adjusted quickly, so it’s comparatively easy to turn them off and then back on. Second, our business is more diversified than it was in 2008, and we are excited about the momentum in areas like YouTube, Cloud, Google Play and our computing efforts. We’re equally excited about the growth we’re seeing across Chromebooks and G Suite, particularly in Meet and Classroom, as more businesses and schools transition to remote work and learning. All of this will help us emerge from this period in a strong position.
I also spent some time on the call sharing observations about the patterns we’re seeing from the first pandemic of the digital era. While technology has allowed certain types of businesses to continue working as before, we can’t expect the world to snap back into place in a single day—this is a long-term effort. And when the crisis does pass, the world won’t look exactly as it did before the pandemic. This provides an opportunity for all of us to help people reimagine everything, from online work to education, to medicine and entertainment.
Overall, we made some good progress this quarter in spite of all the challenges. None of it would be possible without the herculean efforts from Googlers around the world. Thank you for everything you do to continue to support our users, customers, partners, and communities. We will get through this together.

259)Harry Stuermer - Two War Years in Constantinople
It was the same incapability of thinking in terms of true world-politics that led us lately to believe that we might find supporters in Mexico and Japan of the piracy we indulged in as a result of America's intervention in the war, the same incapability that blinded us to the effect our methods must have on other neutrals such as China and the South American States.
The moment England entered the war, Germany lost the war.
As early as the beginning of 1916 he told me the plain truth that we were practically starving Belgium and that the country was really only kept alive by the Relief Commission, and that we were attempting to ruin any Belgian industry which might compete with ours by a systematic removal of machinery to Germany.
He said : " You are going to Constantinople. You will soon be able to see for yourself the moral bankruptcy of the Young Turks, and you will find that Turkey is nothing but a dead body galvanised into action, that will only last as long as the war lasts and we Germans supply the galvanising power." I
The climax was reached in the scandal of supplanting General Weber, commanding the " Southern Group " (Seddul-Bahr), by Vehib Pasha, a grim and fanatical Turk. In this case the Turkish point of view prevailed, for General Liman von Sanders, Commander-in-Chief of the Gallipoli Army, was determined not to lose his post, and agreed slavishly with all that Enver Pasha ordained. From other fronts, such as the Irak and the " Caucasus " (which was becoming more and more a purely Armenian theatre of war, without losing that chimerical designation in the official reports !), there came even more significant tales ; there German and Turkish officers seemed to live still more of a cat-anddog life than in the Dardanelles.
Ermenilere zulmedildiğinden, Alman hükümetinin de bundan sorumlu olduğundan Ermenilerin Kürtler’in ellerine bırakıldığından vs bahsediyor...
Practically right up to the end of 1916, the real, shortsighted, jingoistic Turk looked askance at his new ally and viewed with irritation and distrust the desecration of his sacred " Edirne," the symbol of his national re- naissance, while the ambition of all politicians was to bring Bulgaria one day to a surrender of the lost territory and more. Even in 1916 I found Young Turks, belonging to the Committee, who still regarded the Bulgarians as their erstwhile cunning foe and as a set of unscrupulous, un- sympathetic opportunists who might again become a menace to them. They even admitted that the Serbs were " infinitely nicer enemies in the Balkan war," and appealed to them very much more than the Bulgarians.
On the occasion of the Bairam Festival —^the highest Musulman festival—in 1916, the Turkish Government made a point of sending a group of about seventy AngloIndian Mohammedan officers, who had been taken prisoner at the fall of Kut and were now interned in Eski-Shehir, to the " Caliph City of Stamboul," where they were entertained for ten days in different Turkish hotels and shown everything that would seem to be of value for " Holy War " propaganda purposes.
" Z.E.G." (" Zentraleinkaufsgesellschaft," " Central Purchasing Commission ") and their minions who tried to rob Turkey of foodstuffs and raw material for the benefit of Germany, against the " Djemiet " and more particularly the Quartermaster-General, Ismail Hakki Pasha, that wooden-legged, enormously wealthy representative of the neoTurkish spirit—he was the most perfect blend of Oriental politeness and narrow minded decision to do exactly the opposite of what he had promised. On the Turkish side, there was the determination to safeguard the interests of the Army, and in the case of the "Djemiet" the effort not to let any foodstuffs out of Turkey --a, standpoint that has at last found expression in a formal prohibition of all export—^then the quest of personal enrichment on the part of the great " Clique " ; on the German side, the insatiable hunger for everything Turkey could provide that had been lacking for a long time in Germany : the whole thing was a wonderfully variegated picture of mutual intrigue.
Mehmed Zekki "Bey," the publisher and chief editor of the military paper Die Nationalverteidigung and its counterpart La Defense, published daily in French but representative of Young Turkish-German interests. Hundreds of those who know Zekki also know that he used to be called " Capitaine Nelken y Waldberg." Fewer know that " Nelken " alone would have been more in accordance with fact....Then, as often happens, the Argentine special police took him into their service, thinking, no doubt, on the principle of "setting a thief to catch a thief," that he would have special experience for the post. Grounds enough there for him to add on the second name on his falsified passport "Nelkeny Waldberg " and to call himself in Eiu-ope a "Capi taine de la Gendarmerie" from the Argentine!
As early as summer 1915 there were clear outward indications in the streets of Constantinople of a smouldering Nationalism ready to break out at any moment. Turkey, under the leadership of Talaat Bey, pursued her course along the weU-trodden paths, and the first sphere in which there was evidence of an attempt at forcible Turkification was the language. Somewhere towards the end of 1915 Talaat suddenly ordered the removal of all French and English inscriptions, shop signs, etc., even in the middle of European Pera. In tramcars and at stop ping-places the French text was blocked outboards with public police warnings in French were either removed altogether or replaced by unreadable Turkish scrawls; the street indications were simply abolished. The au thorities apparently thought it preferable that the Levantine public should get into the wrong tramcar, should break their legs getting out, pick flowers in the parks and wander round helplessly in a maze of unnamed streets rather than that the spirit of forcible Turkification should make even the least sacrifice to comfort... all the names over the shops had been painted over and replaced by wonderful Turkish characters that looked like decorative shields or something of the kind painted in the red and white of the national colours. If one had not noted the entrance to the shop and the look of the window very carefully, one might wander helplessly up and down the Grand Rue de Pera if one wanted to buy something in a particular shop
Then came the famous language regulations, which even went so far—^with a year of grace granted owing to the extraordinary difficulties of the Turkish script—as to decree that in the offices of all trade under takings of any public interest whatsoever, such as banks, newspapers, transport agencies, etc., the Turkish language should be used exclusively for book-keeping and any written communication with customers. One can imagine the " Osmanic Lloyd " and the " German Bank " with Turkish book-keeping and Turkish letters written to an exclusively European clientele
I was house-hunting in Pera once and could not find anything suitable. I approached a member of the Committee and he said in solemn earnest: "Oh, just wait a few weeks. We are all hoping that Greece will declare war on us before long, and then all the Greeks will be treated as the Armenians have been. I can let you have the nicest villa on the Bosporus. but then," he added with gleaming eyes, " we won't be so stupid as merely to turn them out. These Greek dogs (kopek rum) will have the pleasure of seeing us take everything away from them— everything —and compelling them to give up their own property by formal contract."  Anlatttt sen seversin.
The Hungarians are closely allied to the Turks not only by blood but in general outlook, and form a marked contrast to Germany's cold and methodical calculation in worming her way into Turkish commercial life. After the war when Turkey is seeking for stimulation, it will be easy enough to make use of Hungarian influence to the detriment of Germany. Turanist ideas have even been brought into play to establish still more firmly the union between Turkey and her former enemy Bulgaria, and the people of Turkey are reminded that the Bulgars are not really Slavs but Slavic Fino-Tartars.
I shall naturally not divulge—even went so far as to say to me in an intimate personal discussion we were having one day between friend and friend : " We Turks are and will always remain, in spite of the war, pro English and pro-French so far as social and intellectual life is concerned ; and it would need twenty years of hard pro paganda work on Germany's part, quite different from her present methods, to change this point of view, if it ever could be changed."
While the Gallipoli campaign was going on, he even made a journey to the Front to greet his soldiers. Early one morning he was found lying dead in a pool of his own blood with a severed artery. He had received his death wound in exactly the same place and exactly the same way as his father, Sultan Abdul-Aziz, who fell a victim to Abdul-Hamid's hatred. The political significance of Yussuf Izzedin's death is perfectly clear. What we want to do now is to demonstrate Enver Pasha's moral culpability in the matter and to show how he was more or less directly the murderer of this quiet, cultured, highly respected, and thoroughly patriotic man, who was some day to ascend the throne of Turkey... One thing is clear, and that is that Izzedin Effendi did not pay with his life for any disloyal act, but merely for his personal and political opposition to Enver. One thing is clear, and that is that Izzedin Effendi did not pay with his life for any disloyal act, but merely for his personal and political opposition to Enver.
The more doctrinal, but at any rate courageous and honourable opposition of Ahmed Riza is likewise of very little significance. Once, about the middle of December, 1916, Enver even went so far as to hurl the epithet " shameless dog " at Ahmed Riza in the Senate without being called to order by the President

BLOG – Sealine C330 to the Med: Brixham to Guernsey
Heidi and partner Kevin head off on the first leg of their journey through the French canals to the Med on their Sealine C330
Tumblr media
Words Heidi Halser
Day 1
Having checked the engines, filters and other general checks, we left Brixham Marina at 06:30am to beautiful skies and calm seas – although the calm seas did not last long…
An hour into the journey and the sea state changed to swells of 2m and an uncomfortable beam sea. Not pleasant to go over the Channel in and we knew that the other powerboats, that are smaller than Chilaxin, were going to have an even rougher trip as they were leaving at 11am.
The yachts that were heading out at the same time as us had a great time I think – one managing to get 9 knots at one stage! They arrived between 3:00pm and 6:00pm at St Peters Port.
youtube
It is always comforting to see the Channel marker and you know, at that point, that you are on the right heading. The only challenge is travelling across the shipping lanes, dodging the massive tankers. Somehow we always time it right – behind one and in front of the next with plenty of time. It's awe inspiring how massive these ships really are.
As we close in on Guernsey, the first thing we see are the towers near Sampson. Then you look east and see the lighthouse in the middle of the channel which you have to go round before heading into Little Russel.
Tumblr media
Leaving Brixham in perfect conditions
We hit this point at high tide, as we wanted to get into the inner harbour of Victoria Marina. The only downside to this is you get a very confused sea state – eddies, rip tides and strong currents. It is amazing to see nature behave in this way but you have to be aware of other boats and ferries all coming in at the same time!
As you head into the harbour wall, you have the fuel quay to the left below the large grey chandlery building. Then you can see the various entrances to the individual marinas.
Victoria is dead ahead and, as you get close to the pontoons on the outer wall (for low tide mooring when the sill is too high), the harbour guys come out to greet you in their small boats and ask where you wish to go and if you want electricity or not. We always try to get to the inner harbour as it is more sheltered, you have power and are close to the facilities.
Tumblr media
Kev gives Chilaxin a well earned wash after a tough Channel crossing
Once in, you are presented with customs documents to complete. You can either place the completed documents in the yellow boxes or pass to one of the harbour team. You can also go to the main office to pay or wait until one of the team comes around and pay by card or cash with them.
When all the Bay Hoppers (the colloquial name for the Brixham cruising club) had arrived safely and the boats were clean we decided to meet up for a beer and discuss our trip over. We headed for the Ship and Crown (right opposite the marina). Several beers later, after all the tales of being bounced around, covered in sea spray and being very cold… I only went and won the raffle!
We then decided to move on for dinner. We chose China Red Chinese Restaurant – I have been before and think it is the best Chinese restaurant ever! They managed to get us a table for nine people and, as before, did not disappoint – amazing food and service!
Once everyone was fed and watered, tiredness kicked in from the long day and we all headed back to our boats for a well earned sleep.
Day 2
We awoke to a beautiful blue sky and stunning views… what more could you wish for?
We headed into town, to Guernsey Goldsmith (in the Main Street just down from Lloyds bank to see Sue, who provides the best customer service I have ever encountered in a jewellery store.
She is fixing an issue that I have with a ring that I purchased last year, and has assured me that it will be completed within my stay. I actually get a call the next morning to say that it is ready to collect. Awesome service!
Tumblr media
Waking up in glorious Guernsey
We head further into town to get some supplies, as we will be leaving Sunday to head half way between Guernsey and Le Havre. On the way back to the marina, we see that the local RNLI team are show casing their 22-year-old-boat, which has been reconditioned.
Having never been on a lifeboat (and hopefully never will in vain), I had a good look around – what a beast! I never realised how many people can be onboard and the engines… every man and boys dream!
The RNLI, who rescue thousands of people around the coast of the UK, do such an awesome job – many are volunteers. Check out their website!
Tumblr media
Heidi inspects the local RNLI lifeboat
We head back to Chilaxin as Dave from DLC Marine Services is due to help us programme our VHF correctly for ATIS (this is required in Europe on the inland waterways). What a great guy! Turns up on time, takes five minutes to do the work and then heads off again. If you ever need any help, definitely contact this guy as he knows so much to do with Raymarine and Garmin.
While chilling in the afternoon sun, we start talking to our neighbours (Nigel and Elizabeth on their beautiful Sunseeker) and are invited later for drinks before we head out for dinner. Such a beautiful boat that makes Chilaxin look like a tender! We sit up on the flybridge and have a glass or two of bubbles and talk about our boating experiences.
Tumblr media
Toasting a safe crossing
After an hour of chatting we head off to meet all the Bay Hoppers. We are meeting up at La Perla Restaurant on the sea front – there are 36 of us! We went there last year and had very good food. This year was no different  and a very reasonable price at £55 per couple including drinks – and we had quite a bit of wine!
A final night cap is required before heading back to the boats. We head into the Ship and Crown again and it's heaving! Obviously the place to be on a Saturday night. Chilaxin will be moving on tomorrow so that we do not have such a long run on Monday to get to La Havre.

Business Risk in Cryptocurrency
Author: Nic Muturniuc
As a young business pioneering in cryptocurrency, it's vital that you can reassure your investors and stakeholders that your business – and their cash – has the best possible financial protection. But, while insurance for Fintech businesses is increasingly available, insurance for Cryptocurrency businesses can be less easy to secure.
The advent of Fintech, and especially Cryptocurrency, has disrupted archaic markets, flustered regulators and created a brave new world of risk for its participants. There's still an element of Wild West in the sector, and many insurers remain shy of the risk involved. While the insurers' position is absolutely understandable, it's up to the insurance broker or agency to educate and provide the necessary reassurances to get insurers engaged.
Heavy reliance on data, technology and infrastructure, evolving regulatory structures and the shadowy threat of cyber risks heap unpredictability and uncertainty on any new entrant to this space.
With headlines like “SEC says bitcoin funds raise 'investor protection issues' (Reuters Jan 19 2018) highlighting the risks of cryptocurrency investments, the insurance implications are huge and underwriters are wary:
“Bitcoin's 1,500 percent surge last year stoked investor demand for any product with exposure to the red-hot asset. A host of companies are jostling to launch exchange-traded funds which would open up the cryptocurrency to a broad retail market” – Reuters.
Macro influencers like governments will no doubt heavily impact the rate of growth in the sector and its eventual regulatory structure. Bitcoin is especially popular in Asia, and governments’ positions there have had a very significant impact on the price of BTC. A recent ban by South Korea and the Chinese government halted trade due to a perceived lack of centralised control, while the Japanese authorities were actively encouraging the sector, until recent events with Coincheck, which are likely to push regulators to reconsider. In this context, western regulators are taking an equally conservative approach. While not faced with actual losses, regulators seem to be taking a preventive approach to protect vulnerable investors.
Taming the Wild West? Bitcoin meets the regulators
Regulation is a key chapter in the story of cryptocurrency. What position will regulators take?
While the philosophy of cryptocurrency and all derivative technologies and related applications is deeply rooted in libertarian principles, ultimately these 'products' will need to get sign-off from governmental regulators if they're ever to take off. Regulatory principles like Know Your Customer (KYC), Anti-Money-Laundering (AML) and consumer protection are the main concerns of regulators. In many cases, cryptocurrencies – and especially blockchain technology, can ease rather than heighten regulators' concerns. And generally the crypto, blockchain, libertarian community will most likely agree with these principles. You'll find that regulators and the community share the same goals – it's just a matter of agreeing on the means of getting there.
Insurance for Cryptocurrency Businesses
Meanwhile, it's critical that you can reassure your clients that:
You've identified your business risks
Your management team has what it takes in experience and expertise
The company has the ability to pay its liabilities
As a specialist Fintech insurance broker, La Playa can help you identify and mitigate your business risk, and structure insurance protection, backed by A rated insures, to help generate the confidence of your clients and other stakeholders.
supervision would give underwriters a framework to be able to offer coverage terms to protect your business and your customers. The London and Lloyd's insurance markets, to which La Playa has access, has historically specialised in emerging risks, and as much as insurers would want to cover your business, the argument for 'Why?' needs to outweigh the argument for 'Why Not?'. And while that's the best part of my job, I need you to help me…
4 Key Pillars of Cryptocurrency Insurance
1. Errors & Omissions Insurance In a sector which evolves daily, even a well-managed business can find itself in dispute with a client over an error, a delay or alleged breach of contract. Errors & Omissions Insurance (E&O Insurance) provides indemnity for losses you are legally liable for if you make a mistake or are negligent, or if your product or service is defective, inadequate or fails to perform.
Failure to defend your business adequately could cause irreparable reputational damage – not to mention the financial implications.
We can help you review your contractual obligations to identify the extent of indemnities that your clients require.
2. Directors & Officers Insurance
Directors & Officers Liability Insurance (D&O) is now considered a crucial form of protection for all businesses, and is often a requirement before investors and board members risk their personal assets to serve your company.
Legally, the directors of a company and the company itself are separate entities and so may both be defendants, separately or jointly, in any legal action or prosecution. D&O can help to protect the personal assets of individuals and, crucially, to cover the costs of their defense.
Directors of all companies are now held, at an unprecedented level, to be personally responsible for actions and decisions they make on behalf of the company – putting their personal assets at risk if those decisions are tested in the courts.
3. Crime Insurance Have you considered the risk of fraud in your organization? It pays to think through the risks of fraud at work and check you've got the right insurance protection in place.
Crime Insurance protects your business from losses that are a direct result of employee or third party dishonesty.
4. Cyber & Privacy Insurance
The invisible threat of cyber-crime, combined with the potential for tech infrastructure to fail, and the ever-evolving regulatory landscape, represents a new minefield for modern crypto business. Unless your organization carries specialist cyber insurance coverage against such perils, you won’t be protected against the unusual risks that arise in cyberspace.
In the wake of numerous high-profile cyber-crime cases, including network and data breaches, businesses globally are shoring themselves up against a range of new global tech and cyber risks.
As experts in customized insurance for Fintech businesses, La Playa is the ideal partner to design a watertight insurance solution for your business risks in Cryptocurrency.
