Lockdown City
This brief was a task to capture real events that are occurring during this global pandemic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the editing I done on these series of images I decided to do something a little different. I have made them have a slight green tint to all of them to create a cinematic apocalyptic feel to the images but I felt like if they were too green it would have made my images look really tacky therefore I had added a little bit of warmth back into them. I ended up really liking this style of editing its different and I feel its very visually pleasing to look at images with this type of editing done to them.
With the shots I feel I have managed to show all the main parts of post lockdown, the supporting of our NHS, people wearing masks basically everywhere, social distancing, Covid guidelines. All very vital parts to our lives at the moment and I feel I have conveyed all of them in a very good and artistic manner. Overall I am very pleased with how my images turned out, if I were to change any of them it would be to re edit the 3rd one down as I feel I have over edited it slightly.

Lockdown City Research
Sunday the 27th of September
Photographer 1 - Chris Dorley-Brown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I find the first image above extremely eerie but beautiful at the same time. It resonates pure peace and silence which was something that was seen all across the world. Streets were empty and the weather was beautiful and clear almost everyday which was the complete opposite from the pandemic. From all three images, my favourite aspect is the clear blue sky. it’s so prominent and goes hand in hand with the strong sunlight. I would love to try something like this but I’m worried I won't be able too as the streets of Glasgow are starting to fill up again with most shops re-opening. This series of images were photographed in March when the pandemic had just reached the highest point. The architectural aspect of the image holds great power over the lower streets. The angle of each image is quite low, just under eye level which creates that sense of greatness from the overbearing buildings. These buildings are man-made which is ironic as not one person is in sight which is why I think it works so well. In regards to colours, the desaturated tone is super effective in creating an almost unrealistic style. The images look as if they are prototypes for future buildings; very much the opposite of what they are.
Photographer 2 - Ian Hinchliffe/The Guardian
Tumblr media
This is an image I would like to recreate but in more of a street aspect where the model is unaware as it adds to the pandemic aspect instead of a shoot. I do feel this image is very powerful as it shows the severity of the situation and gets across the measures that some people are taking. I know that the image of someone wearing a mask will be in everyones series but it’s a very important aspect that should be photographed. In regards to the composition, I find it to be executed correctly. The main focus is the man, perfectly centred with a sign to the left with 'exit guide' which has always been there but seems very much fitting with the new pandemic. On the opposite side is a group of people with their backs to the camera. It seems very crowded with no social distance measures in place which may be just because of the angle. So to me, this image doesn't really add up, but perfectly sums up the current situation. One person does it correctly with a group nearby not quite following the rules. The image hasn't been editing all that much but I will say that the depth of field is very effective in capturing the main aspects of the pandemic.
Photographer 3 - Tim Thursfield/Express & Star

Again, I feel this is a very powerful image which I aim to recreate, not in the aspect of location etc but in regards to queues and the distance between each person. Ikea in Braehead looked like this this time last month but now is simply in one by one and is less restricted with the amount of people inside. So, I aim to photograph a shop in Glasgow City Centre with this type of theme.

Here all are my final canvas for all my Block 1 project.
I am extremely happy with all the work I have made over the last few months within Block 1 as Covid happened early 2020 and it made everything changed so I needed to do must of all of block 1 from home and getting feedback and class work over zoom calls with my lecturers and classmates.

Lockdown City
Plan
I plan on shooting lockdown city in Glasgow as i liked the way my People Make Glasgow images turned out. I feel there is more going on in Glasgow than East Kilbride and more points of interest.

Lockdown City
Research:
How lockdown was photographed around the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important traits that reports include throughout the lockdown in every area.
Images show the struggle of the healthcare systems, preventive measures ( checking temperatures, handwashing/sanitising, social distancing, staying home)
Looking at only one news agency, The Guardian, who has a whole segment solely for coronavirus updates. They include world news as well as local updates. From social analysis on people’s mental health to how people going o deal with possible lockdown measures during Christmas.

Lockdown City - Images Selected + A3 Test Canvas
The top image is all the selected images I have picked from each round and put them into one folder to keep it tidy.
I did find it hard with selecting the right images to put together for this project.
Test Canvas 1 - With a key line only around the top middle image of the covid sign.
Test Canvas 2 - With a smaller key line around all the images.
I think having the key line around all the images work better as they are all the same and not as noticeable as the test canvas 1.

Photojournalism Task
Task 1
Identify where news comes from. List five sources where you would see good photojournalism?
News comes from Meany media sources such as news papers, T.v, Socail media. and news apps.
According too https://blog.feedspot.com/photojournalism_blogs/ these are the top 5 photojournalist blogs/media sources.
1. New York Times Lens Blog
2. Big Picture | The Boston Globe
3. The Atlantic | Photo
4. Reading The Pictures
5. BBC News - In Pictures
Task 2
Choose two established photojournalists from Magnum or a large photo agency and look at four photographs for each photographer. Look at the photographers background and career. Talk about their approach and style of photography. Comment on the effectiveness of storytelling in their work. Take note of some of the issues they may encounter as a photojournalist. What has made them successful in their field of work?
Jérôme Sessini
Jérôme Sessini is a well known French photo journalist working in conflict zones in countries such as  Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Libya working for international publications
He has also done a series on the drug related issues in Mexico and the anti-government protests in Ukraine and indigenous minorities in Cambodia facing forced eviction.

The Second Battle of Fallujah
The Second Battle of Fallujah started stared in novermer 2004 in Iraq. It lasted a mounth and a half. The US put in troups and gave it the code name  Phantom Fury. It was  the first instance of Coalition military action against a purely insurgent force, since the toppling of the Ba-athist government in 2003.
He documented the perspective of the us marines in the hostel environment. The closeness creates a strong and socking impact as if you where there yourself. the trend of seeing the backs of the mariens also makes you feel as if you are there with them. the mixture of portraits gives the series a human element as we can see there faces. This makes his images extremally effective in showing people the cruelty of Battle. This would have been a hugely dangerous job as he was frontlines with the marines posing difficulties and risks.
Chris Steele-Perkins
Chris Steele-Perkins is from Myanmar. He has been in the photography carrier for 45 years now and has been well travelled. his main bodies of work are in Myanmar as well as Japan, Africa and Afghanistan, which he has received critical acclaim for.
He is known for his sympathetic yet sharp eye when it comes to his images.
Tumblr media
In his image he capture the mania of Tokyo. This series was to capture all sides of tokyo and japans culture from funny, good and bed. this particular images gives the viewer a real sense of how busy Tokyo can be. The intimacy of the image also makes the viewer feel suffocated adding to the sense of busyness.
Tumblr media
This image shows homeless people in one of japan biggest train station in Shubuya. This image next to the salary men image shows the divide in Japan and Highlights some of its main issues.
Tumblr media
A big part of Tokyo culture is what is known as a salary man. I think this image shows the calm side to this job as we often picture these man rushing about and constantly working in the busy Tokyo environment. he has captured a man reading and one dozing off. this adds to the calming atmosphere of the image and he has done well to capture the peaceful side of Tokyo.
Tumblr media
Once of the aspects of tokyo he wanted to show was the comical/surreal. i think this images adds a light-heartedness to the series. this dog is receiving a mud bath from the red sea. one would expect to see this treatment in a spa rather than for a dog. The expression he has captured on the dog adds to the comic as it looks fed-up with its situation
I think some issues that he might have encountered is the shyness of the culture in japan. i think most of his shots would have to be candid as meany wouldn't agree to there picture getting taken.

Lockdown City - Final Images
Above is my final series of 10 images for the lockdown city brief. I am really happy about how these tuned out. Going into this project I was anxious about a couple of things, firstly how on earth id convey a national pandemic through images. However, I feel I have achieved this. Although my images do feature closed down businesses, with the chairs behind the window subtly implying the consequences, they also show that live goes on and show how it's become a part of day to day life,  I love the image of the mask on the statue and how this conveys this point. In terms of editing I chose to edit in quite a desaturated contrast heavy way, I feel this really helps to convey the underlying tension across all our city’s at present and feel that this comes across on the images.
