RECYCLE FINAL:
Due to the restrictions of lockdown, I ended up having to complete the recycle brief at home. To begin with, this was a big concern as I do not have the equipment at home that would be used in a studio. However, I really like my final image. Over the course of shooting, I no longer liked the concept of shooting broken plant pots. This was because all of the props at home were new and good looking, using them would have taken away from the brief. Instead, I decided to shoot an old pair of shoes that have been sitting in the back of my drawer for a while. My inspiration for lighting and the setup for the shot came from my very own home. When opening the cupboard to grab a pair of shoes the light from the house seeps in at a direct angle and soaks the shoes stuffed at the back of the room. This is what I wanted to recreate in a studio set up. I wanted to create the story of something old and forgotten.
To capture this image, I set up my home made studio in my garage. I did this so that I could have a dark lit area to shoot in. As well as this, I did this to try and get as close to shooting in the studio that I could. Secondly, I used a blanket as a backdrop, a box to sit the shoes on, a step ladder as a lighting stand as well as two flooring panels as foam boards.
I placed the boards side by side with a small gap which the garden light shining through. This helped create the directed light. When taking the shot, I had noticed that the front of the shoes were very dark. To combat this, I used my phone and projected and orange screen in front of the shoes to lighten it up - this worked really well.
I used an aperture of f8.0 to try and recreate what I would shoot In the studio, this aperture allowed the shoes to be in focus. I kept the ISO at 100. Because of this, the shutter was very low due to the low light, this would have been different if shot in a studio set up due the the flash.
In post production, the main challenge was fixing the backdrop, the blanket was a distraction to the shot. To combat this, I used a darken brush tool in Lightroom and went over the background. This helps separate the shoes from the backdrop. In addition, I bumped up the contrast of the shot a lot which further aided in this. I kept the image relatively dark as this helped in creating the feeling of neglected.
In conclusion, I believe that my recycle image fits the brief. The image tells a story and the shoes have been posed in a way that they would be displayed in an advertisement. In addition, the contrast and colours of the image work well with the image and help to make it pop. Finally, my setup worked really well which I was very pleased with as I was shooting at home and not in a studio.

Painting With Light Photographer - Reuben Wu

Reuben Wu is a photographer who lights his incredible landscapes using drones modified to carry LED lighting rigs.
At first he wanted to better control the lighting in his night landscape photography by lighting hills and rock formations with the lighting drones. He then discovered that he could then use the drones themselves to paint light shapes in the night-scapes. He has refined this technique to create some stunning art pieces which have now gained huge popularity across the world.
Wu spends a lot of time planning his shooting expeditions usually spending the day studying a particular scene then shooting at night. He calls these continuing series of images Aeroglyphs.

In Wu’s own words:
“In my visual work, I am driven not just by the urge to create imagery, but by a desire to explore new places as if they were unknown territory…Photographs, like music, can create an echo of a time and a place.”

Recycle Research

For my Recycle brief I plan to use old materials such as glasses, plates or cutlery. As well as this, I am going to add in some food to my final image. I really like this idea as it will show a strong contrast of old and new which is what the brief is all about. I love the colours throughout all the images but especially the top two. Using bright colours will keep the shot looking fresh which gives the impression of something being new. As well as this, I really like the lighting of each image, this adds drama to the shots and makes the presentation of each shot more formal and professional looking. Finally, one of the biggest inspirations from these images is the textures used in the shots. I really like how the photographer has used old materials such as plates and wood to add more of a rustic look to the shots.

Artisan Research
1. Midsommar Trailer, 1.20 - 2.20, Jump cuts:
I think this clip is really good research for artisan as it really helps create the feel of the film. The camera cuts to another clip of the film to the beat of the music. The music is intense and harsh, the cutting of the scenes really helps build up the tension. By doing this we see a small glimpse of the film leaving the viewer wanting more.
2. The Shining, 0.00 - 0.50, Tracking:
I really like this shot as the camera is following the perspective of the bike. This means that we have an equally restricted view as the character. This helps aid in the mood of the film. As well as this, it adds more depth to the film due to the camera movement helping to keep up the pace and tension the scene is trying to create.
3. 1917, behind the scenes, 0.00 - 0.30, Long shot:
I really liked this clip as it showed you how the scene was shot which is really beneficial for the brief. Adding a shot like this into my video could add more interest.
4. Crush Culture Conan Gray, 0.00 - 0.20, Depth of Field:
This shot stood out to me as I really liked how the depth of field was used to help emphasise the meaning of the song. In the shot, we see the subject looking at his phone with no notifications, in the background we see another person on their phone with many notifications. by using a shallow depth of field the shot creates a sense of isolation and loneliness.
5. 2016 Movie Close ups, 0.00 - 3.17, Close ups:
This clip is really useful because it shows close ups in different lighting, setting and angels. This will help as it gives different perspectives on how a close up can be used in my artisan. Additionally, I really like close up shots as it gives the clip a more personal and vulnerable feel as it creates the feeling of being face to face with the subject.

Illusion Research
‘Photoshop gives you the opportunity to create images that are not physically possible in camera, in one shot. This is a chance to use your imagination, not limited to real world situations and physics. Develop, research and decide on a style for your character portrait, to produce a photorealistic composite image.’
For my Illusion brief I am going to shoot a Fairy like scene set up in a magical forrest. I really liked this idea and thought it was very fun and creative. This will work really well with the brief as the possibilities are endless with photoshop. Firstly, I plan to shoot my background. For this, I am aiming to shoot a nice landscape scene of a forrest area very close to where I live. I chose this area because it is covered in plants and flowers which will help set the scene of my shot. As well as this, the area has Nice lighting when the sun hits it which will really elevate my work. For the second part of my shoot, I am going to get a friend in and shot them in the studio. For this, I am going to have them dressed up like a fairy having them do different activities like making them water a plant or just simply have them sitting down. This is so that I can photoshop all the different poses and stickers them in the final shot so it looks like a typical day in a magical forrest.

Above are some images of what I would like the scene to look like. I chose these images as I love the colour to them, the photos are really soft and sweet which is the feel and look I am trying to create.

For my portraits I really want to go far out and have the subject all dressed up. This will really help add to the image and make it look more magical. As well as this, it will really help the feel of the image and add more depth and personality.

To help create the look, I am going to bring in a friend that is a qualified MUA. This will really help my work as it highlight the detail in the photos. As well as this, I would like the make up to fit in with the background which will help keep the flow of the image.

A sense of... - Research:
For the ‘A sense of..’ brief I plan on shooting a sense of connection. I am choosing to shoot this as connection in friends, family and partners really important. As well as this, I think this theme will be really suited to the ilford brief. For the brief, I am going to shoot Ilford HP5. I’ve chosen this film as I really like the contrast and grain that the photos have. As well as this, I think the film will really compliment the lighting and help further emphasise the feeling of connection and love that I am trying to show throughout the brief.
