What a lovely bright, plant-filled loft style home in Paris, France. The owners are using part of it as a yoga studio, but it’s such unique space.
So pretty and bright.
Have you ever seen spiral stairs that split, leading to 2 different areas of the 2nd floor? I like how they incorporated stools and chairs that fit in so well with the metal stairs and railings.
Isn’t this unusual? The living room is so huge, it includes a large library in the corner, plus windows to the kitchen and other rooms, both upstairs and down, and a dining/living room combo that opens out to the patio.
Turquoise cabinets, a skylight directly overhead, and a wonderful antique chest. This kitchen speaks to me.
Totally Zen bath.
The master bedroom has 2 skylights and a glass wall overlooking the library.
They’re using the 2nd bedroom as an exercise room and installed a sauna over the glass window in the floor. (Not a great place for it, if you’re wearing nothing but a towel.)
Ohhhhmmm. And, this room they have set up as a yoga class. Namaste.

Nice private terrace.

These are photographs of affordable housing. Not literally, of course. But they are artifacts from a city in which apartments were plentiful and relatively cheap, and from this, much followed. “You could go to New York and become whatever you wanted,” said the photographer Edward Grazda, 70, who moved to the city in 1970. “Rent a place for a couple hundred dollars a month, and invent yourself. Which a lot of people did.” Mr. Grazda rented a loft on Bleecker Street for $250 a month and began work as a photographer, shooting mostly in Latin America and later Afghanistan. The pictures here were taken casually, between projects; most were never printed.

Comments by cardstumble: While I was still in college in the early 70s my first apt and my first in NYC was a big modern studio on East 7th st and Avenue A (ukranian neighborhood) for 125/month. This was the hippie era in nearby St Marks Place and I was a flower child too. Later in the 70s I moved with a friend to midtown near Times Sq (this was when Times Sq was still very seedy) We lived in an old 3 flat (converted house) on west 44th and 9th avenue (right next door to historic actor’s studio). We had the entire top floor for 255/month - they called it a railroad flat because 3 or 4 rooms were all in a line. The guy on the 2nd floor was a bway composer. Finally in mid 70s I had a big studio by myself overlooking Central Park West at 96th. It was just 175/month and I lived there until I moved to Paris.. The eighth avenue express 96th street station was 1/2 block away to speed me to midtown. I’d spend weekends in central park sunning myself. I remember the lady on the first floor was a music/piano teacher.

South Williamsburg, Brooklyn: Where Families Are Out in Force
Cédric Cadin, who opened a bistro called La Cafette last year at the corner of Havemeyer and Hope Streets, just above Grand, said his choice of neighborhood was motivated by the planned L train closing and the prediction that more people would move closer to the Marcy Avenue station, less than 10 minutes on foot from his restaurant. Mr. Cadin relocated from his native France for this venture, and said he is still looking for a permanent place to live in South Williamsburg, but is stymied by the high rents.
“If I compare it to Paris,” he said, “it’s just crazy, crazy, crazy.”
What You’ll Pay
According to data posted on Trulia’s website, the median rental price of apartments in Williamsburg (North, South and East) between May 4 and June 4 was $2,587. The median sale price, as of May 29, was $999,999, a year-over-year increase of 16 percent.
Although breakdowns were not made for sub-neighborhoods, current listings show that the difference in price between north and south seems to increase as the properties get more expensive.
Of the 33 homes in South Williamsburg on Zillow as of June 17, the lowest price for an apartment with no HDFC income restrictions was $695,000 for a 555-square-foot studio in the Gretsch, a 1916 factory building at 60 Broadway that was converted into condominiums in 2003; it had a monthly homeowner fee of $442 and annual taxes of $3,011. By comparison, the lowest-priced listing among the 49 homes in North Williamsburg was $685,000 for a 509-square-foot studio in a 2009 condominium on North 11th Street, a block from McCarren Park; the monthly homeowner fee was $430 and the most recently reported taxes (in 2017) were $3,403.

Among the South Williamsburg listings, the median asking price was $1.45 million for a two-bedroom duplex condo in a 23-unit building on South Second Street, across from Domino Park; the monthly homeowner fee was $677 and the annual property taxes were $521 (with a 25-year tax abatement that expires in 2036). In North Williamsburg, the median asking price was $1.745 million for a two-bedroom condo with a roof deck at North Seventh and Berry; the homeowner fee was $798 a month and the annual taxes were $725.
The most expensive South Williamsburg property was a $4.68 million, four-bedroom duplex condo loft on Wythe Avenue and South First Street, in a converted 1914 factory building. The monthly homeowner fee was $313 a month and the annual taxes were $11,051. The costliest listing in North Williamsburg was a $5.995 million, fully furnished, two-bedroom condo loft in a converted 1910 factory building on North Third Street near Wythe Avenue; the monthly homeowner fee was $1,791; the annual taxes (with an abatement until 2025) were $233 a year.

Mini Parisian loft full of charm. This is adorable- the kitchen has an industrial glass block wall that was left in place.
It’s all about the old beams and semi-exposed brick.
I like the green metal cabinetry and the bookshelf that marks the separation between living space and kitchen.
Separated by a sliding door, is a small area that serves as a home office, large closet, and sleep loft, behind the glass block wall of the kitchen.
Very nice shower- that deep sink looks like a mini-tub. You get a glimpse of the loft in the mirror.

Amazing Parisian loft with a courtyard that used to be old stables.
The kitchen is absolutely stunning. Look at the atrium ceiling.
This spectacular kitchen is larger than my entire apt.
The space is shaped in a triangle, that you can see here in the living room- see how it narrows in the corner?
There’s a large 2nd fl. loft open to the living area.
I don’t know what the building codes in Paris are, but they’ve outlawed open stairs, at least in Chicago. They’re scary, like you can slip right thru them.
There are 3 bedrooms and this is the very large master in the loft.
Cute little worn courtyard.
This 2nd, smaller room is lovely.
One of 2 baths.

The owners of this extraordinary loft in Paris call it The Black Box. Within the black box is the bedroom and bath.
If they didn’t build the black box, this would be one open room.
So, now this became a separate living room. I like the contrast of the traditional wainscoting on the black walls against the modernity of the kitchen & living room.
With it’s standard white tile, the kitchen looks like a lab, doesn’t it?

I’ve never seen an exposed fireplace flue. So unusual.
This home is very open and airy- lots of glass, balconies and catwalks.
What interesting cabinets. They look like old safes.
Two sleeping areas and one fabulous library.
Very large bath off the living room and atrium. This is a very different layout, but I love it.
