“As far as matzo-ball soup, my mother made the best,” Ronald Lauder said the other night on the Upper East Side, in the bookshop of the Neue Galerie, the art museum he founded. Lauder, seventy-eight, the younger son of Estée and Joseph Lauder, and a billionaire heir to their cosmetics fortune, was there to celebrate the publication of a cookbook. “Honey Cake and Latkes: Recipes from the Old World by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Survivors” was organized by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation, of which he is the chairman.
In the shop, before the book’s launch, Lauder sat with a handful of its contributors. How did the idea originate? “When you’re dealing with survivors, when you’re dealing with Jews, everyone has a different version of events,” he said. “But there’s only one version that’s correct, and that’s mine.” In January of 2020, Lauder had invited a hundred and twenty survivors to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau on the seventy-fifth anniversary of its liberation. At dinner one night, talk turned to gefilte fish. The group stayed in touch. Maria Zalewska, the foundation’s Polish-born director, began to gather recipes.
More than one survivor remembers sustaining fellow-prisoners with vivid descriptions of the foods they’d eaten in their earlier lives. Tova Friedman (kasha varnishkes, carrot tzimmes), a sprightly eighty-four-year-old with a silvery-blond bob, was five and a half when she was sent to Auschwitz. “Food is home,” she said. “And if you talk about it the smell comes to you and home comes back.”
Eugene Ginter, eighty-three, who was liberated just before he turned six, had a more complicated relationship with smells. “When I came in Auschwitz,” he recalled, “I looked through the wooden slats of the cattle car, and I said, ‘It’s very pretty,’ because it had trees. But then the smell, it was a sweet smell. It was the human bodies being burned.” Ginter’s contributions to the book are the foods his mother made after the war, to fatten his emaciated frame: dark chocolate shaved over buttered black bread; a boiled potato mashed with buttermilk; kogel mogel, whipped egg whites beaten with yolks and sugar.
Across the hall, in Café Sabarsky, servers circulated with trays of champagne and bite-size versions of some of the book’s recipes: Elisabeth Citrom’s eggplant salad with crispy rye croutons; David Marks’s rakott krumpli, Hungarian layered potatoes with cheese; Goldie Finkelstein’s rugelach. Sitting on a banquette, Lois Flamholz, ninety-four, a survivor who was born in Czechoslovakia, looked at a photograph of herself in the book in which she presses circles of dough together for jelly cookies. “I miss those cookies!” she cried. “I can’t stand,” she explained. “I stopped cooking, I stopped baking.”
On another banquette, the actor and director Joel Grey recounted, to the producer Jeffrey Seller, his experience filming “Cabaret” in Germany, in 1971. “I was terrified on the flight,” he said. “I stepped off the airplane, stood on the ground, and wept.”
Lauder moved to a lectern. “The first title of the book was ‘Auschwitz Recipes,’ ” he said. “It didn’t go too far.” Midway through his thank-yous, he turned toward the door. “Before I say anything else, a very special woman is coming in now, Marion Wiesel.” He went on, “It was Marion who I called to get the recipe from her husband, Elie. And, today, the latkes that you ate were from Elie’s recipe.”
The latke recipe was, unusually, absent onions. Later, a pushy interlocutor asked Mrs. Wiesel, ninety-one, a survivor herself, and a gifted translator, if it was true that her late husband didn’t care for them. She said, “I can’t believe you’re interested in whether or not he liked onions.” Elisha, the Wiesels’ son, said, “My father preferred to focus on the positive. So rather than an onion-hater, I would think of him as a chocolate-lover.” According to family lore, Marion had ensnared Elie with her latkes, and also bribed him into quitting smoking by promising him a Jaguar. “There was no Jaguar,” Elisha said.
In the lobby, on the way out, Tova Friedman, whose TikTok account, TovaTok, has nearly half a million followers, held court. Thanks to her new memoir, “The Daughter of Auschwitz,” she’s been invited around the world to tell her story. “So they took us to this . . . high tea,” she said, describing a visit to London. “We got that thing, full of little sandwiches. So I said, ‘What happened to the crust? That’s the best part of the bread!’ ” She went on, “You eat your soggy white bread, I got an idea. I’m gonna invent chai tea,” as in the Hebrew word for life, pronounced gutturally. “It’s gonna be rye toast, with crusts, and it’s gonna be lox. It’s gonna be gefilte fish.” ♦

New(ish) Comics Day on DCUI:
Superboy: the Man of Tomorrow #3: I’m enjoying how silly some of the alien designs are. Ok, more seriously it IS doing some interesting interrogation of Kon’s psyche and what his desire for the old days/feeling like he’s not fitting in to the current continuity is based in. I also liked that the story is leveraging the different connections Kon has to the other Cosmeteers. This is their terrain and Sector drama, but Kon’s got the contacts to call in heavy hitters just by being part of the Earth ecosystem.
Batman: the Brave and the Bold #1: things I don’t think we needed - ANOTHER Joker origin story. However it DID manage to keep me terrified looking at that 13+ label on the front cover and the little girl, so there’s at least that? The silent movie aesthetic was at least interesting.
With Stormwatch - don’t mind me I’m just shallowly appreciating how good Rose’s hair braid is here. Otherwise, this sure is a Stormwatch story and team.
Superman: look I am never going to ignore Lois and Clark in their civilian mode together, so that made me happy.
And yes, the bit everyone’s been going on about: the Batman Black & White is VERY good, yes.
Warlord #2: (yes I’m still reading this very old comic) Look I’m giving 1970s Mike Grell some more time to draw me fake!Ollie. We’ll see how much of this I can take. There is a LOT of slavery. Also people are trying to kill Travis Morgan for annoying them every 6 or so pages, which tracks.

You see what I mean about fake!Ollie?

Finally had a Sandman-related dream tonight! I guess Dream recreated Corinthian and put him back to work already, because that's what I got :D. I was a disembodied observer watching him.
He was a boss of some sort and had an assistant that looked like Amy Adams (Lois Lane from Man of Steel), and they were having a secret affair. In the dream, they just finished their work for a day and he decided to give her a facial massage, starting with cleaning her face with a cosmetic cotton pad, and she was like "Boss, this is kind of weird". And he was like, "You did a lot of good work today, let me spoil you". He started massaging her face with some moisturizing oil, and I, being a bit into hand stuff, found it pretty hot, but was also worried he might start chomping on her eyeballs any minute. But instead, he started telling her a story about Loki, how he once decided to steal a magical lotus flower, but in order to do that he had to go through some drastic body transformation, which required him to wear a helmet on his crotch, which in turn caused him to have a bad BO. I woke up before he could elaborate on that.

Big Mama. Art by Katelan V. Foisy, from The Hoodoo Tarot.
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. — 2 Timothy 1:5
Plant: Sunflower
The Image Big Mama is holding a plate of homemade cornbread, with the sun shining brightly behind her. She wears a skeleton key as a necklace to symbolize her all-encompassing wisdom.
Big Mama is a term of endearment for the matriarch of one’s family. It is an acknowledgment of her wisdom, strength, authority, leadership skills, and ability to nurture multiple generations. Traditionally, all elders of both genders were to be respected for these qualities, but no one is bigger than Big Mama. As the caregiver of so many children and the transmitter of family history, lore, and spirituality, she is the family’s jewel and guiding light.
Today, Big Mama’s role in many families is not as prominent as it used to be before desegregation. As Black Americans increasingly interacted with ethnic groups that were more youth-oriented and patriarchal, the ethical, hierarchical, and conceptual foundation of the community started to shift. Also adding to this alteration of thought was the movement away from the church. It was there that the values of their forebears were reinforced, celebrated, and discussed. Often, if was your Big Mama (or someone else’s that you knew well or were kin to) who also held the prestigious title of “Mother of the Church.”
Like the sun, the matriarch is a warm, centralized force without whom growth would be impossible.
Meaning When you receive Big Mama in a reading, you better believe that no matter how dark it is now, the light is coming and everything is going to be alright!
Big Mama may also be speaking about being willing and able to share your glory, your light, and your power with others. This is not the time to lay low; this is your time to shine.
If you receive Big Mama in a reading, consider the following:
• Do you fear being brilliant or successful?  • What is being highlighted?  • It’s okay to be the center of attention sometimes.  • What does enlightenment mean to you?  • Take a personal day from work.  • Who are the important players in the situation?  • Am I exhibiting a positive attitude?  • Reputations matter.  • It’s time to celebrate.  • Confidence is the best cosmetic.  • What do you need to do to look and feel your best?

79. Small Crossovers between still existing shows
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Remember back then, when they used to do a lot of this? I mean a lot. Like having a villain from „Arrow“ popping up in the „Flash“ and the characters actually interacting with each other outside of the annual Crossover-Event? Well appareantly we won’t get that for the newer shows or even the older ones anytime soone either, for Health and Saftey Reasons, which is why Diggle will be the Crossover instead. But „Arrow“ is gone, and while they may do something simelear with someone from „Supergirl“ next season, we won’t really have Barry on „Superman & Lois“ or Sara on on „The Flash“ for a single scene or something along those lines. Aunt Kara actually should be around a lot in „Superman §& Lois“, but she won’t be, which is just sad. And it does not look like it will get better next season. Sadly having everyone on the same earth was for cosmetics only and won’t impact the shows in any real way.

Good, I have read that DC tried to digitize collections and not take them out on paper. In a desperate attempt not to be left alone with Batman. I do not know if this will be successful, many will not want to read comic digitally. That could be read by young people especially. Which leads me to speculate, that it will happen with characters that do not attract young people. Here there has been a lot of talk that Superman is at sunset, unfortunately it may be closer than we think.
That may be true. The current representation of Superman only attracts old fans, and not even them are liking what Bendis is doing. TBH, neither do I, even though he’s trying some new stuff. The metaphorical unmasking of Supes is a good idea, but it came out of the oven half baked: Bendis presents it like nothing had changed with the revelation, only Lois being besieged by her peers as the worst consequence, when it should’ve been a game changer.
Young people doesn’t like him because there’s nothing to like for them: this Superman is old. His city, his job his couple...all of it is the same it was four decades back. Most of them weren’t even born back then. Even the new animated movie brings nothing new:
Oh! Another origin story where Superman is learning the superheroic job and Clark is infatuated with Lois. How novel! Luthor??? Of course there’ll be some Luthor on the side, playing the main villain! I saw that movie before.
The only recent attempt in modernizing the character was the New 52, but the idiots at DC didn’t invest enough grey cells on it and let it die of severe bad writing, a terminal disease for most comic characters and most comic universes. You see: it doesn’t matter how new you make things look, it’s just cosmetics if the same old people are always in charge of the writing, you’ll get the same old results. And the old fart fans didn’t cooperate either: they had a hard time accepting the changes, or not at all, and the young didn’t find the exciting new adventures they were expecting for in a new Superman.
Evolution can’t be made in halves, or it will be like taking a step forward and two backwards. If your idea of evolving the character is making it have a child and that’s it, you aren’t advancing it at all, just adding appendages, more weight, making it more constrained and static.
Writers of old granny panties Superman introduce some changes, like giving him a son or having him reveal his secret identity, but make things  look like nothing had changed, business as usual: the same old dynamics in his household, his job, his city. Even his clothes are the same they were in 1938.
Superman became boring like looking at paint drying, because it has the same attractive. If you want new readers, you have to bait them with something they might like, but if you want to keep them, you have to feed them every day with food they may want to eat. There’s nothing like that in old Superman. For instance: their idea of making a leader out of him is making him give a pep talk every now and then about truth, justice and the American way, like in the 1950s, but action-wise, he’s the same moron who only knows to rescue kittens from trees, like in the 1950s.
Old fart fans are resistant not only to changes in their characters, but to changes in technology as well, refusing to adapt to comics in digital format, giving the presentation more importance than the contents, when it should be the opposite. They used to laugh at their grand parents because they couldn’t set the timer on a VCR recorder (google for the reference, kids), but they themselves can’t move from paper to digital without hyperventilating and have anxiety attacks.
But, unfortunately, that is not the main reason Superman is facing its sunset: is because it’s not attracting new generations of readers, born into Manga, Anime and video games, where things move really fast, where evolution is an every day occurrence. Superman is moving at a glacier pace since the last forty years and its owners sabotaged the one opportunity they had of making it move forward, even if it was in comics or cinema.
