which again, like i truly do not give a shit if you do cherry pick canon, just don't come for people who are like hey you know that's just your headcanon right? like don't act like your own interpretation is better than anyone else's. it's not, it's still just an interpretation. i do read eddie as queer while still acknowledging that within the canon universe, he is identified as a straight man by canon. which makes my reading of him just a headcanon (aka canon in your head but not anywhere else), no less valid and important but still not the story they may be trying to tell.

i've talked about this a little bit before but i think a lot of the issue here is the idea of playing nice and remembering that this is all pretend which i don't think they've really had to deal with before. a lot of these people have never been confronted with another big kid on the block. their ship has kind of held precedent for a really long time, along with their headcanons and their ideas of what these characters are. so now that buck actually is bisexual and is dating a man, who isn't eddie, suddenly their entire worldview of canon breaks down.

now there's canon gay representation. now you don't have a moral argument to justify your ship bc that thing you've been begging for, "canon bi buck/more canon queer characters" does exist. so now what are you arguing for? just a preferred ship? no that can't be, it must be more than, we must be fighting for something bigger.

but now you're forced to confront that it's all just headcanons and vibes and theories that have ran unchallenged for years and years. so now you have a group of people who do not know how to grapple with the reality they are being shown vs the reality they've created in their heads clashing against people who are fans of the same reality the show lives in and don't really care about the non-canon anymore. which, if that's your prerogative, if you prefer non-canon stuff, then go for it, that's what fandom is for, but the issue here is that they view this as genuinely a threat. they don't want any other interpretation. it doesn't just feel like a threat to their ship, it feels like a threat to the canon world they've created about these characters. they see other people coming in excited for something that isn't their thing, and now feel like we're taking something away from them. they don't want to see canon anymore, even if it's something they used to claim they want. they don't want queer rep, they want to be proven right.

NOTTING HILL 1999 — dir. Roger Michell

I LOVED NOTTING HILL could watch this movie over and over forever holy shit i love hugh grant. also julia roberts has a very big mouth like if i see her in a different movie and she looks like completely different but i'll recognise her mouth like is that weird- SO CUTE sometimes things didn't quite sequence together ? like there were times when it wasn't quite clear how long had passed between the two scenes, but that doesn't really bother me. not a lot of exposition but again doesn't bother me. just a nice fluffy romantic film :) also has so many funny moments that are actually funny not cringe all around i love this movie so much one of my favourites ever i think

DIRTY DANCING 1987 — dir. Emile Ardolino

in short; not for me lol i can't stand patrick swayze's accent i'm sorry. didn't even watch the whole movie because i was so not interested. it's cute when he's teaching her to do the dance and stuff and i liked when they were in the water trying to do the lift but like that was the only memorable thing for me. hair reminded me of the heathers (which is one of my absolute favourite movies) but other than that it wasn't really anything crazy to me ? just an 80s movie that my mom likes

"when the planes hit the twin towers..." and the dynamic created w their relationship to magic and stuff is really interesting. brainwormy for sure. it took me from "who the hell is this magician" to "DO PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT WONDERMAGIC????? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELLO???" in one comic. i have a LOT of thoughts about them like genuinely i think there's meat on the bone conceptually for wondermagic

thinking about my camelot story where arthur actually is a man, instead of arwen

the idea has been bouncing around in my head for a while that the game form would have the player be able to choose their character gender, being either arthur or arwen

like i want it to be distinctly horny though, that is what spawned the idea for the story in the first place, to fulfill my slutty little fantasies of a male harem otome which is so sorely lacking

and like, playing What in Hell is Bad?, the sole option for my horny ass that i am aware of, which has a male player option, but it doesn't change the writing at all, and it's written in a way that's like... if the player character is a guy, either his ass magically lubricates itself (possible, the fucking happens in magic room bubble land) or he's trans lol

it just makes me think i wouldn't want to half ass the male option? i don't want to opt for "kept vague with only easily swapped features shown on the same base" for the illustrations, i don't want the saucy scenes written vaguely so they can kind of apply either way, i don't want the writing watered down to enable an awkward self insert that never feels like yourself anyway when i want the protagonist to be a distinct character

the way i imagine the plot, i haven't really written it out yet much but, arwen being a woman isn't just like. not questioned? the fact that a WOMAN is the prophesied future king has people super skeptical but Merlin says so, so... arwen has to struggle with that, a battle of like being herself and being who she needs to be for the people despite their constant bias against her, always fighting for the approval of her people, because what's the point of being king of her people don't want her there? though i guess that's not how monarchy works and the game could have a morality system of her disregarding public approval in favor of her selfish desires, but i digress

anyway, if all the other character genders stay the same and it's arthur as the protagonist, it could be arthur's struggle with being gay? but that's a whole other way of writing it, he's not visibly gay, the way arwen is obviously a woman, it'd leave some troubles of finding a spouse and having heirs, which is an important duty, but i guess i could have something happen where his sexuality is outed to the public? but yeah, totally different writing direction, the major plot points would be the same "taken from legends" stuff but, the way it'd be handled would be totally different

like i can't think of a game where the character gender alters the story to that degree though? it's almost a different story entirely. a simple gender switch in account options or whatever would warrant a new play-through

like it's just easier to have gender equality in rpgs when it comes to the protagonist lol but that's not the story i want to tell

and i'd rather not add arthur at all than half-ass it, or water down both protagonists stories in order to have the option there

but like. thinking about it now i do kind of want to have the arthur story too, it'd just be a different one, but it comes second to arwen's story

In the middle is I guess Rachel and Blaine. It's just handled so horribly. The biphobia. That's really it I guess but it's a lot. The crush itself isn't so bad. First place based on being the least awkward is Sam and Blaine! I like their friendship and it makes sense for Blaine to crush on Sam. And I like that Sam is cool about it and it's not like a friendship deal breaker where they can't be friends because of it. Crushes are normal and crushes on friends are natural and expected and it doesn't have to be the end of the friendship because of it, whether anything comes from it or not. So yeah I think that was nice for the show to portray in the way they did!

okay so, i'm upset over something my dad posted on facebook. which is funny, because nearly literally everything my dad posts on facebook is upsetting. he thinks trump hate was manufactured by the media and the election was stolen in some nebulous way he can't define, and that liberals want to destroy everything, etc etc. he used to be a more sane conservative, but i think he tuned into a lot of right wing talk radio while driving as a long distance trucker and it basically poisoned his brain. he liked what he heard and he went with it. i've tried to talk to him over the last 10 years or so about his growing right wing idiocy and it's been completely fruitless, and i finally had to excuse myself from giving a shit for a while. i've reassured myself that at least he isn't stupid about covid, at least he isn't stupid about abortion rights, at least he isn't (very) racist, at least he isn't stupid about gay stuff. i never heard him say homophobic stuff growing up, i came out as bi at 18 and he was supportive, i came out as nonbinary a couple years ago and he was supportive. my mom FOUNDED a gay group at the college she taught at, and befriended a lot of students, including a trans student that she helped get away from their abusive family of origin. and he never said a word against any of that stuff. BUT he acts the fool on facebook. constantly. well, when he's not banned, which he seems to feel is a bragging point when he is. he knows my sister and i disagree with him on everything and don't want to hear it any more, so we hardly ever hear any shit out of him in person. but i check his facebook about once a month to make sure he hasn't fallen into a deeper rabbit hole than the usual run of the mill right wing out of touch with reality idiocy. and on this monthly check, i saw a lovely post where he referred to biden's 'surgeon general' (sec. of health and human services actually) dr. admiral rachel levine, as "a man pretending to be a woman". and i find all his hateful, stupid political posturing disappointing in general but that stung my ass on another level. and i literally know he's a 70 year old idiot who loves nothing better than showing his ass and upsetting people but jesus. and i commented (i NEVER comment, we aren't even facebook friends) that this was his space to share what he thinks and god bless even if i usually disagree, but that was hurtful and i was sorry to hear he felt that way. and i guess that made it pop up on my mom's feed because she agreed and said she hoped none of her trans friends could see it. so hopefully she's giving him an earful about where he's gone wrong in life. shit, she married him... that's her problem for the most part. so i don't know. i know this isn't a novel and unique experience. plenty of people find out their parents are shitty in some way and get disappointed and have to figure out how they want to handle it. i still have a hard time reconciling this disappointing person with the dad who lives in my head, even though i've known since i was a teenager that he was kind of off when it comes to stuff like this. but i'd already planned to visit them this weekend and it's hard to think of looking him in the eye and not just... shaking my head sadly, lol. what the fuck.
