Dean Priest.

Watching the book trundle its way towards this chapter has been interesting, because as Emily steps into her own voice (although really, she's always had it) - Dean appears. This is going to be a weird analogy, but Dean is kind of like a rotten onion. There are so, so many layers to unpeel there - LM Montgomery seemed to have him as a pet character, he's rife with symbolism and allusion, he's disgusting, he's ominous, he haunts the narrative - but in the end, after all that peeling, you just have a rotten onion. This is my clumsy way of saying my personal opinion (personal! opinion!) is that while looking at Dean, saying "pedophile," and moving on is more than valid, (He is a rotten onion!), there's also key elements to his character that I think are incredibly essential to the book as a whole - specifically, the book's commentary on women writers.

Dean is like the evil version of a kindred spirit. There's some old saying about if you don't listen to your kids, they'll find someone who will, and I think this heavily applies here. It's not lost on me that we get Dean's perspective at length; it feels very significant in a book that, excluding throwaway lines, has Emily's voice front and center - until Dean appears. He's presented as enticing and disturbing all at once - @gogandmagog and @no-where-new-hero had an absolutely brilliant post the other day comparing him to the Big Bad Wolf. Emily seems drawn to and repulsed by him at the same time. He seems to fancy himself as a Rochester, which we can take or leave (I leave lol), and from the beginning, from the very first interaction, he makes clear that he wants to own Emily.

So, if Dean is so awful, why is he presented as appealing at all? I mull over this a lot. The easy explanation is that LMM had no problem with age gaps and grooming, as shown in other stories where she outright endorsed it (unfortunately, it seemed to be a popular trope of the time). But Dean is presented as ominous, and age gaps are criticized, and one minute he's denoted as having "strength, tenderness, and humor," and the next he's flinging "cobweb fetters" over Emily.

I would say (and thank you to @limestreet for the brilliant analysis a few months back, best take on Dean I have ever seen imo), that Dean represents the threat of the patriarchy to women's artistic voices. Of course Dean is appealing - he's a more viable threat to Emily's voice specifically because he's not an Aunt Elizabeth or Uncle Wallace. It's easy enough for her to dismiss them. But Dean quite deliberately enmeshes himself in Emily's life and explicitly (in later books) threatens her writing. Dean is the "it's your writing or me," and he's chillingly effective at making sure to make that a hard choice, when Emily at no other point hesitates to pick her writing, whether when burning her account book, writing on letter bills, risking the wrath of relatives, or any other of the endless hurdles she has to overcome.

Knowing that Dean represents that threat (how women writers often were forced to pick between, one might argue, the 'seduction' of marriage/family and writing), puts a curious light on this passage:

“That’s good. Because you see your life belongs to me henceforth. Since I saved it it’s mine. Never forget that.” Emily felt an odd sensation of rebellion. She didn’t fancy the idea of her life belonging to anybody but herself—not even to anybody she liked as much as she liked Dean Priest. Dean, watching her, saw it and smiled his whimsical smile that always seemed to have so much more in it than mere smiling. “That doesn’t quite suit you? Ah, you see one pays a penalty when one reaches out for something beyond the ordinary. One pays for it in bondage of some kind or other. Take your wonderful aster home and keep it as long as you can. It has cost you your freedom.”

According to Dean, Emily reaching for something out of the ordinary (such as a writing career) must cost her in bondage. And this is where I think of LM Montgomery, miserable in her marriage to a jealous, resentful, unstable husband, LMM for whom Emily was heavily autobiographical, LMM who despite her writing success, had to marry to secure her future. I have never agreed with Dean being Ewen's stand in, but I do think Dean as a character feels pointed.

Okay. Okay. So. Um. Now that I'm thinking of getting on ao3 a bit more and/or writing fics, I was wondering if I should pick up and actually make a full-fledged fanfiction of my Parent Wolverine A/B/O or Omegaverse AU...

I've made some posts here on Tumblr about it, and even a small oneshot on ao3. But I lm wondering if, now that I know u can write the fic elsewhere and then move it to ao3, if I'd be able to finally make it that way.

(I also, maybe, had a version with Sabretooth as Reader's parent) (but this one focuses on the au where Logan is) (I also, maybe, changed some things about the different genders, because I thought I could write them my own way, and not have the old tropes of meat-headed alphas, helpless omegas, and forgotten or nonexistent betas. Instead, alphas tend to be smaller and more defensive + are a bit more spry, omegas tend to be larger and very protective/aggressive + have stronger bones, and betas fall in-between, being a bit hardier/adaptive than either of the other two + tend to have dual tendencies) (I tried to be creative here)

I also know this isn't necessarily an au type you might like, and that is okay. I mainly just want to write Reader and the mutant teens becoming friends, Logan and the other X-Men adults being parents to the teens, and everyone being a bit more protective amd cuddly amd prone to purring + scenting.

(Bonus: mutants have heightened instincts and reactions and traits, while humans have next to none)

So. Yeah. I'm trying to write something, basically, I just have to figure out what I want to go with and go from there.

this is going to be a long post,  and also a personal one — but i wanted to talk about nott, and caleb, and trauma.

i’ve said before — i was a casual fan of critical role for a bit, and then i was (a few days late) witness to the nott/felderwin reveals of episode 48, came in for the discourse and stayed. i have no street cred, i’ve been here a month. part of the reason i got involved and invested was that i was mad about how certain corners of the fandom was making all the revelations about caleb — how nott’s reveals and obvious trauma factored in for him, not how it factored for her — and that’s still true. and boy can i still rant for it.

but that’s only part of the reason, and the rest of it is this: i really, suddenly, deeply found myself relating to nott. i always liked her. i thought she was fun to watch, i liked her dynamics with the others. but i didn’t identify with her in particular, not until e48/49 and realizing the way she deals with trauma.

all the mighty nein are to one degree or another damaged. they’re all alone and adrift, bonded in part because they have no one else, no ties to anyone else, anywhere else. for some — jester and caduceus, seemingly — they have ties and a past and a real sense of self. or there’s fjord, who had an idea of himself that is now under a lot of stress, who is trying to figure out in a real sense who he now is. you have yasha and beau, who, for different reasons, left their lives and homes behind them and are trying to find a new path. 

then you have caleb and nott, who have both not just fled their pasts but destroyed it, taken on entirely new identities and names and lives. neither believes they are the people they used to be: bren died when he murdered his parents. veth died quite literally when she was killed. caleb and nott are not those people, but new people, people barely coping with their pasts and traumas, surviving on the fringes, scared and lonely.

and there’s molly — who also died and left a past self behind, but coped by denying it entirely. caleb and nott say they’re different people, but their every action refutes it; they’re different people still caught up in their pasts. molly by contrast decided screw the past (aided by his own amnesia) and tried to forge his own path, and sadly died before we could see how long that denial would hold. lucien may have had trauma and horrors in his past, but molly did not know of them and was fiercely opposed to finding out.

caleb and nott? their trauma is not at all in the past. it’s just the way they handle it that’s different.

caleb’s trauma is obvious. not the scope or the reason, but the mighty nein were all pegged to it the moment he went into a daze in episode seven. he barely tries to pretend to be functional — he can be charming when he wants, but he doesn’t want. he doesn’t bathe or eat or sleep or function. he’s casual and matter-of-fact about his ruthless streak, his tired willingness to torture and kill. he doesn’t particularly try to hide his trauma; in a very real way, he’s made his whole second life about it: it is who he is. he is the man who murdered his parents, and the man who will grow strong enough to rip the universe apart for his own goals and guilty conscience. he doesn’t go around talking about it or about himself, but it’s obvious he’s not happy. he’s not — there. he’s grumpy and morose and quiet and cynical. the mighty nein might not all know why, but it’s obvious he’s been through some shit.

but nott? now, she hides her trauma. she’s not on her surface unhappy. she’s silly and sarcastic and nervous and loud and funny. she’s fine with being the butt of a joke. she’s supportive and nurturing and maternal to the point that people who had no idea she was a mother were mentioning it long before luke was ever mentioned: she’s happiest and most comfortable in a ‘support’ position, whether getting roped in on jester’s schemes, offering thoughts during planning but going along with the group’s strategies, or just… everything with caleb. but she’s also not jester, pretending she’s happy when she’s not: nott complains. she’s openly scared. she says again and again and again she doesn’t want to go into water,  when she never refuses to do anything else. she’s afraid of returning to felderwin. she mentions yeza several times. she holds back. it was clear there was more to yeza from the first time she mentioned him, or from the time she couldn’t help but want to tell caleb his name. it was clear she had regrets and fears and dislikes. but it wasn’t clear she had trauma.

not until it really, really was. she was murdered, in a way intended to make her suffer. she lost (or believes she lost) her family. her home. she believes she is now an unlovable, evil being. and then it all comes out, and nott just… says it. unblinking, staring straight ahead. no tears, no real hesitation. here it all is. 

and then she goes back to acting fine. but she’s not fine, that’s the thing. she’s never been. now that it’s all out and  she’s more open about it, she’s also been more clear about that part. when the gang starts blithely discussing resurrection from the dead, she very quickly and very lightly asks them to stop. but she doesn’t dwell. it’s not wrong to dwell, to linger on terrible things, to do like caleb and make it your reality and driving motivation even as it cuts into you. but that’s not what nott does. she keeps it hidden. she keeps cheerful. she is cheerful, and funny, and likes to pick on fjord and go on adventures with jester.

you learn to do that. not to pretend, not to lie, but to keep your mind away from the dark things, to focus on the good and positive and your friends and what makes you happy. because sometimes it’s too much for to look at head-on, in the moment, and you need to focus on something else. some things are. sometimes it’s easier and better to focus on other things, on other people. to worry about them instead of yourself.

it’s not any healthier than defining your entire life by the worst thing you did, like caleb. but it’s probably not any worse. nott is coping. she is very much not over the loss of her family — the thirty seconds it took her entire facade to come down in felderwin is proof of that. everything she does, from using her real name accidentally after caleb told his story, to the way she mothers him and jester. to the fact that for the first time in the campaign she isn’t a passive actor but making the mighty nein’s decisions for her husband’s sake. her death and her trauma are who she is. 

but she’s also still nott. still weird and sarcastic and happy to be a joke. she’s not trying to fool anyone, especially not anymore. it’s just something she is. she’s scared and traumatized and out of her depth and recovering her sense of self. she’s also funny and cheerful and petty and blunt and weird. it doesn’t make the darker parts a lie or an act or something put on. it doesn’t make the silly parts a lie or a mask. she’s both. she’s coping. she’s doing fine.

So….it started with this post I made. I had found this art from one of my 2020 sketchbooks and thought it was a neat cross over idea. But then I realized the two characters (Toriel from Undertale and The Snatcher from A Hat in Time) actually have a lot more in common then meets the eye. And THEN I realized their both head cannoned by fans to have adopted orphan children as their own (Frisk and Hat Kid). And moments after making the post I realized….I wanted to draw this cross over idea so so badly lol. So I did:

And I’m satisfied with the way the drawing turned out! But the ISSUE is….now I’m hooked on the idea and it might just become my new hyper fixation 😭

Because shortly after I finished drawing these characters hanging out, I realized there’s other characters that should also absolutely meet each other. The most obvious was DJ Grooves meeting Mettaton. But then other ideas came to me like WD Gaster meeting MoonJumper. The Temmie’s meeting the Seals from the arctic cruise DLC. Maybe even the Mad Dummy meeting the Mafia boss in the jar and The Conductor!

And then I started thinking about Deltarune too. Ideas like Seam meeting The Badge Seller. Bow Kid cosplaying as Ralsei, Mustache Girl cosplaying as Sussie, and Hat Kid cosplaying as Kris. Perhaps Queen could meet The Empress? Although I’m unsure how well that one fits lol.

So you see…

Now I want to draw ALL these scenarios happening in different art pieces. And maybe even make a whole story about it. Someone help me please lm*o

I'm rereading Emily's Quest and Ilse/Perry's romantic resolution is hands down one of my favorite parts of the whole entire series, what are your thoughts on them together and the complicated love square between Emily, Teddy, Ilse and Perry?

you can't see it, but I'm throwing back my head and laughing maniacally, for o poor innocent anon - I do not know if you are aware and you might be, but this discussion happened several months ago and I learned (while having the time of my life) that people have strong and conflicting opinions on Emily of New Moon. Never have my lm montgomery posts gotten so much traction. I'm more than happy to talk about my thoughts here, but if you're looking for more, I suggest searching the emily of new moon tag on tumblr or on my blog. (Poor Teddy did not fare well, let's just say that).

Ilse and Perry's relationship is a really sharp contrast to Emily's and Teddy's to me tonally. Although this isn't necessarily reflected on the individual level, I feel like Ilse and Perry's is defined by this activeness/aggression, and Emily's and Teddy's is defined by this passiveness. Ilse and Perry get into fights; Teddy and Emily ignore each other for years. Ilse verbally attacks Perry to his face because she's too proud to admit she loves him; Emily ignores Teddy's whistle and ices him out. This doesn't necessarily trickle down to the character level (I would not describe Emily Byrd Starr as a passive and quiet person lol), but squinting at the relationships, these are overall impressions.

In this neapolitan ice cream mix of personalities, you get so many different combos. (Ilse/Perry, Ilse/Teddy, Emily/Perry (he wishes)..the list goes on). I love how you describe it as a love square, because it really only stops short of Ilse and Emily dating each other, and even then, their friendship plays just as a significant a role as the actual romantic relationships. It would be as if in Anne, Phil did decide to go for Gilbert because well, Anne has repeatedly said she's not interested. That would layer their relationship in an entirely different way, and that's what happens with Emily and Ilse. It would also give us a different impression of Gilbert, choosing to date one of Anne's best friend after expressing romantic interest in Anne repeatedly.

I think the love square kind of fits Emily's tone as a whole - Emily's books don't have the innocence - or perhaps a better word is earnestness - that Anne's do. That friend group is messy. Ilse knows Emily likes Teddy but goes around with Teddy, Emily knows Ilse likes Perry but Perry is in love with her, Teddy is in love with Emily but still choose to date Ilse...it's less a square and more a three dimensional rhombus that's caving in on itself. (floating somewhere in this stew of hormones is dean too, to make matters all the more complicated)

As for each individual couple - your ask didn't ask this, and it's already been discussed at length (see first paragraph) so I'll limit my thoughts on Teddy and Emily as It Would Have Been Nice if Teddy Talked, At Least Sometimes. We barely see them interact, and it weakens the pairing in my eyes considerably.

All the more because we have this passive conflict right next to Ilse's and Perry's very active one, although that's usually seen at a narrative distance (ie through Emily referencing it in her diary). I think Ilse's and Perry's romantic resolution suits them very well - Ilse is someone who has had free reign to do what she wants her entire life, who was neglected then spoiled rotten, and who is temperamental to say the least. Her leaving Teddy at the altar to flee to Perry's bedside is completely in character for her, along with her needing a wake-up call on the level of death haha. It's suitably dramatic and over the top for someone who is very dramatic. It also neatly embarrasses Teddy, who, if my memory serves, needed some emotional walloping at that point as well.

The thing about Ilse and Perry though, is that almost all of their interactions happen offscreen. Their fights, reunion, and married life all happen off screen. In fact, both the 'endgame' couples are marked by this. You get more interaction between Perry and Emily than Perry and Emily, and really, it almost feels like you get more interaction between Teddy and Ilse than Emily and Teddy. I love the Emily books, but they do leaving me wanting more in that respect, especially because these characters are so compelling. I want to read the scene where Perry who is half conked out in bed sees Ilse in all her bridal glory crash through his hospital room door! I want to read more than the 1-2 conversations we get between Emily and Teddy! It's interesting, though, because a lot of what we do see is narrated by Emily in her diary; in a way, Emily is telling her own story to us as she sees fit.
