Games can fool...

There’s been a trend on Instagram and elsewhere for the last few years of people uploading gameplay clips of driving around the fictional world of Grand Theft Auto V and the comments being filled with comments from people unaware the video is from a game (even if it’s posted by a GTA fan account!). I saw some comments on one today where people were (in all seriousness) asking why these dangerous drivers weren’t being arrested. (They called Lester Crest and had him bribe the cops for GTA$5,000, that’s why. But I digress.)

Of course not everybody knows the game and can immediately recognize locations, business and road names, vehicles and non-player characters. But it’s interesting how easy people can be fooled sometimes. And we haven’t even gotten to AI-created videos. Though as long as people in these videos keep looking like Eldrich Horrors, it’ll be a while.

But to be fair, GTA V and GTA Online (both celebrating their 10th anniversaries later this year) have gotten very realistic looking. So much so, there are videos where people have gone and put original LA locations side by side with the game and ... they get pretty close. Here is but one example:

I play GTA Online regularly. I’ve posted this before but after several years playing a character that looked like Jon Cryer’s version of Lex Luthor from Supergirl, I started GTAO over with a female character after some recommendations (funnier interactions, harder to get shot - that one was B.S. I can tell you - and more of a personality). Here’s a selfie I had her take last week.

One of my favorite things is to take her a place where other NPCs gather, activate a “hide from radar” option we have, and have her mix in until other players come along. I love it when they decide to start attacking NPCs at random. Yes, that is a thing. They don’t expect one of them to suddenly pull out an “Up n’ Atomizer” (affectionately known as a “boopy gun” for the sound it makes) and launch them across the street! LOL

ok so initially I hated it because I didn’t know what I was doing, and I’m just really bad at stealth missions so going into this heist solo was a nightmare. like I needed a few weeks just to recover from how annoyed I was and how bad I did.

BUT

after calming down and watching this video on youtube, I literally started farming this heist and getting like over 1mill every hour(ish). it’s nice because you can do the heist while your businesses resupply, finish the heist, do your business missions, and then go back to doing the heist.

literally the best way to make money as a solo player, in my opinion.

now that i’ve watched that video and know what i’m doing i actually really look forward to doing it!

as for the other aspects, I LOVE Miguel Madrazo. and I absolutely adore Pavel. They’re great characters and an awesome addition to gtao-verse.

About Me and the Blog

I think this is the third time I have created a Tumblr dedicated to the songs I have listened to, music or album review, whatever. But for some reason, I ended up aborting or leaving the page. I am either swamped, and I can’t maintain the page, or maybe I can’t find the right words to express myself. English isn’t my first language; I am still learning to communicate using the language. But now, I promise I’ll continue this mini project.

You can call me Skye. That is the name I gave to myself. Skye is not a part of my birth name or anything. Just chose the name.

I spend most of the time doing IT work in some company. After my shift, you’ll find me playing GTAO, or Minecraft, or NBA. I also play the guitar; in fact, I am a part of a band in the company where I work. I do rhythm guitars. Our band usually does covers of any song under the sun. But it depends on the complexity of the song, as most of us were bedroom players and were too busy to learn scales or stuff.

I listen to… almost anything. I don’t consider myself a music enthusiast. I don’t enjoy country and jazz that much. Well 1) who enjoys country music? 2) Jazz is too complicated, and hard for me to understand. But I am trying my best to have an open mind and consider listening to those genres.

I prefer heavier stuff - metal, punk, rock. I do enjoy ethereal and ambient music too. I also enjoy funk, soul, RnB, and synth-wave. I listen to pop and KPop as well.

I am doing this blog so that I can account the songs I have listened to, currently listening to, and will be listening to in the future. Maybe discover new bands or artists as well.

So....Y’all know I’m going out to Turkey soon and because there’s like a shit tonne of prep and meetings we all have to go to before leaving and because of the car-pooling initiative I’ve met this dude who lives in the same area as me and we give each other a lift to the meetings and shit. He’s very cute, very much my “type” when it comes to guys, and we totally bonded over the randomness that is my iPod while traveling to these meetings. We’ve been to four now, and we’ve done nothing but laugh there and back everytime, it’s been so much fun.... Buuuut.....I got a text today from a friend of mine who’s part of the group going out to Turkey and she’s known this guy for years and she mentioned that he told her he “can’t stop talking about me” and was telling her how he likes me because I’m funny and that he thinks I’m hot and is excited to spend more time with me when we get out there...and like, that’s great and all, he’s really nice but I really don’t like where this seems to be leading..... I don’t want shit to get awkward in Turkey and I really don’t know how to politely tell him that while he is very attractive and funny and the kind of guy anyone could get along with, I mainly like my men fictional hahaha! I am not in the market for a relationship, but I do like this guy. I can see myself being good friends with him but I am just not interested in starting a relationship with a guy right now. I still not really “mended” from all the shit I went through a few years back with my asshole ex and I just really hope this guy doesn’t have designs on something happening between us because, well...unless I have some kind of massive change of heart, it ain’t gonna! I have to be around him a lot over the next three and a bit weeks so, I just don’t want it to be awkward but I’m trying super hard not to give off any “vibes” that tell him I’m interested, and I can’t really come right out and say “back off” because he hasn’t yet said/done anything to me directly, and some guys (often the nicest of them) can become real assholes when you tell them to not get any ideas and I give the fact I have to be around him so much I don’t wanna sour anything. Also, there’s this girl I met late last year on GTAO. We’ve been talking a lot over the months, exchanged pictures and stuff (she’s cute as hell) and we’ve been planning on meeting up towards the end of the summer when I get some time off work, and I like her a lot. We live like ten minutes away from each other and considering how many people play GTAO on global servers, and how in two and a bit years of playing I’ve never met a female player online (nevermind someone who’s in my neck of the woods), it’s kinda bizarre how we found each other. I mean, GTAO is inundated with grown ass men or twelve year old boys, so you can’t deny it’s kinda wild that two bisexual girls, of a similar age, and a similar location should meet while online gaming....so it feels like “fate” that we became friends and who knows what could happen when we meet up, because we get on like ridiculously well already. As soon as she randomly messaged me through the PSN, we clicked. We were in a mission and she messaged me because she wanted to rant about one of the idiot dudes in our team and what she messaged me was basically word for word what I was thinking at the time haha! Also, she loves Michael, so you know that scored her some brownie points straight away haha! Anyways, we’ve been chatting for ages and we’ve cultivated a relationship so if anyone is going to get a shot at something with me, it’ll be her...... but at the same time I don’t want to crush what’s growing with this dude because he’s really nice and someone I could see myself being interest in, if I had the first ounce of energy in me to be interested in a real flesh and blood guy....ugh! What a dilemma! I just hope shit doesn’t get awkward in Turkey because I’m looking to have myself a time, I don’t want to guy drama over there, thank you very much!

GTA Online’s Demise

That’s roughly how much in-game money I earned as profit in three real-world days in GTA Online without anyone there with me. That’s 7.5 pence per hour. To buy the largest office in GTA Online, you need $4,000,000. That would take me 400 hours which is 16 days and 16 hours. If I’m using the same logic and counting that I’m playing for about 6 hours per day, that’s 66 days and 4 hours I’d need to be playing for. That’s how long it would take me to earn the funds for the office. I don’t really plan on playing that long just for one thing, but that’s what GTA Online is becoming.

With the release of these new DLCs, GTA Online (GTAO) is becoming a glorified mobile phone game. Yeah, there are new ways to earn money, but how do you get the opportunity to earn that money? By spending loads of money. The cheapest way to get started is by buying the cheapest office. It won’t have anything glamorous inside it and you won’t even be able to customise it unless you spend extra money, but considering the base price of the cheapest office is $1Million, I doubt you’ll have much spare money if you’re just starting off. On top of that, before you can earn any money, you’ll need either a vehicle warehouse or a storage warehouse. The cheapest large ones are $1.5Million and $1.9Million respectively, and if you want to decorate the vehicle warehouse, you’ll need another $230,000 or $295,000 depending on your style preference.

Once you finally get your office and warehouse set-up, you’ll need to actually import some stock to your warehouses. Now if you’re using vehicle warehouses, there’s no strict guarantee on how much you can earn per vehicle you can import. You can only get them one at a time though and you’ll have to do a small mini-mission to retrieve it. These missions almost always cause damage to the vehicle itself, and considering you have to pay for all damages done to a vehicle, you can see how that becomes annoying. Not only do you have to fight off the AI whilst trying to keep your vehicle looking pristine, but you have to also fight off others in your session. They become aware of you moving expensive vehicles and they are rewarded if they stop you. Same goes for moving Cargo crates for a normal warehouse. Players can stop you and are advised to do so. I whole-heartedly recommend staying away from the Import/Export missions except for when you’re out of cash.

Overall, if you want money. Then you can spend money to make money, which is realistic. Or you can let Rockstar’s player sorting algorithms put you in worse lobbies until you find someone who can hack you in some money. It’s not hard to find someone hacking. I’ve found quite a few. Just wait until someone tries to kill you, and then get revenge. Have an unofficial deathmatch on the streets of Los Santos. That way, the game will punish you for fighting (because GTA is completely against violence) and will put you in “worse” lobbies. Which is where the hackers get put.

So basically, your options are as follows:

-          Be shunned and potentially banned because people dropped in-game money for you

Or

-          Invest hours upon hours into GTA Online and eventually grow to resent it like many people resent their jobs. Only difference is. At least you get something out of working. GTA is seemingly just a money-sink

 But wait!

Did you know you can get Shark Cards? No? Well prepare to be amazed.

For almost 4 years, Shark Cards have existed as GTA Online cash booster packs. They effectively let you give away your real world money, and gain in-game money. Their ‘best-value’ price is on the “Megalodon Shark” card. That gets you $8Million for ‘just’ £59.99! *Cue awed faces*

Who thinks that that’s an amazing deal?

I don’t either. $4.4Million is how much you’ll have to spend to buy the office and warehouses. And then if you want to buy a Yacht which will allow you to unlock more missions and spawn vehicles for free, the cheapest is $6Million. So, that means that if you buy the Office, Warehouses, and Yacht. You’re spending $10.4Million that means that you can grind for 1040 hours or so, get a hacker to give you money and run the risk of losing your Social Club Account, or buying 2 of the Largest Shark Cards and spending £119.98, and then having a little bit of spending money to actually make your offices look nice, all at the sacrifice of real-life things like food and water.

Bottom line is, there’s no good way to play GTA Online nowadays unless you have a large group of friends to play online with. GTA Online had so much potential, but it has become a victim of its own success as now Rockstar are trying to make money off the players who already spent money on it. Apparently being the fourth best-selling game wasn’t good enough.

“Write Your Own Story"

I was bored the other night, and I ended up playing Star Trek Online. The last time I tried to play, it was on my Mac, and I couldn’t get the graphics to work, so I gave up. Now it’s on the PlayStation 4, and the graphics are working just fine. Nothing to write home about, but playable, and it definitely looks and feels like Star Trek, which is fun in the way that Battlefront looks and feels like Star Wars; it’s fun to finally get to set foot into these worlds that we’ve looked into for so long.

Like most MMOs, there’s a starter area, with starter quests, to help you get used to the game, its controls, its concepts. And if you took away the Star Trek trappings, it could be almost any MMO I’ve played recently: World of Warcraft; Guild Wars; Middle-Earth. Run over here, kill these things, complete some objective. Get something helpful. Run over here, kill some more things, talk to this person. Get something else. Keep going until you’ve reached the end game.

And really, this was part of what was bothering me about The Division. Essentially, this is a single player game that I’m playing on a server. It’s a single player game that I’m playing with other people who are playing a single player game at the same time. What makes the game a multiplayer game is that other people are on at the same time, and that there is some sort of PvP component.

And it made me think, well, why is it like that? Why do most of these games fall into the same pattern? In The Division, you couldn’t even see other players unless they were a part of your group, except in the safe houses. You’d be following someone out the door of the safe house back into the world, and they’d vanish into thin air. Again, a single player game that you have to be online to play.

So, why can’t you have an MMO where the world is more interactive, more player-driven, where the events are created and caused by the users interacting with each other, instead of just interacting with the server. Why can’t the players have some sort of agency in what goes on around, what they end up doing? A good MMO needs to feel multiplayer.

Which brings me to Grand Theft Auto Online. GTAO’s Free Mode is actually pretty close to what I was talking about. Free Mode is all about User-Driven Content. Like The Division’s Dark Zone, it’s a space where (almost) any player can attack you, which leads to a lot of chaos and anarchy, but there are also a number of mechanisms built-in that allow you and other players to work together, in fact, allow other players to give you work to do, missions to complete, something to do. In addition, you gain the ability to write your own story.

Here’s an example that was posted on Reddit recently:

A few days ago me and my friend were roleplaying as terrorists bombing the most notable places in Los Santos. He would put the sticky bombs in the car and I would drive to the place, killing pedestrians, and causing damage. We didn’t harm any players, but somehow, we did. That player was Off the Radar and he was standing outside the Oriental Theater. The player got caught in the carnage, and worse is that he was part of an organization (let’s call it the Blue organization). The player must’ve told his organization to attack the two of us, as we were seeing blue blips following us after that. One of them in a Hydra.

We got killed a few times by associates and that was when we realized that we fucked up. I became CEO and hired my friend then activated Ghost Organization to escape. The Hydra which was killing us was desperately looking for us. Dude kept shooting missiles and machine gun everywhere that it hit half the session who were pissed as fuck. Some of them had Hydras and they teamed up to destroy the organization which attacked us. That was when the session started getting into war.

The Blue organization who were supposed to attack us now ignored us and attacked the organization of innocent people (let’s call it Orange). There were like 5 Hydra blips in the map! Everyone in the session were like “wtf is happening in the sky” and this one Chinese guy kept saying “qq” that everyone ignored because no one understood him.

Me and my friend were watching the skies near the Vinewood sign, as an intense dogfight was currently in the sky. No one wanted to give up. The Blue organization that attacked us then told everyone that they will get money if they help attacking the Orange organization. Seeing as how desperate GTA players are for money, some joined the fight. There were now more Hydras in the sky, and some Blue members went on a massacre on the streets killing anyone in their way. As all this happened, me and my friend were at my apartment, realizing what we have done. A few minutes later, we go to a new session. There were just way too many disruptions that we weren’t able to play outside the apartment. And that’s how a simple mistake turned into an intense war. Reddit

I’ve been hired by CEOs to act as a bodyguard, and worked with motorcycle gangs to deliver illegal products, and most of the time, I’ve had to work against other players, while I’m working with other players. It’s really a unique set up that I don’t think I’ve run across before. I’ve been invited to car shows, invited to hang out in offices, and suddenly found myself parachuting out of a plane when the pilot randomly decided to bail. I’ve driven a taxi, and gone around offering other players rides.

The first thing a good MMO needs to do is feel multiplayer Really, I could play GTAO for a long time. I think it really has to do with the user-driven content, which you just don’t find in the other MMOs. It’s the users giving you something to do, and that’s what makes it feel like a real multiplayer game, and not just a single player player game that you’re playing with other people, which was what Destiny, and the Division, even WoW, that’s what they feel like.
