Reaction to Ep 461

SPOILERS ALERT

I've been rooting for Daniel (Hyungseok) vs Logan (Taesang) forever so I'm pretty pleased. Then again now that I remember it, wasn't Logan defeated already in the homeless/first love arc?? I thought it was impressive that Danny did it but did later events make Logan dismiss it as trivial? Or did PTJ forget it? But then again in one of his vlogs he mentioned that older arc specifically as Danny's trigger for growth so yeah maybe Logan simply just deleted it from his brain?

Anyway some of the other fights unfortunately happened off-screen when in fact these are what readers had been waiting for.

Well, let's open for a jump scare review.

HAHAHAHA [INSERT EVIL LAUGHTER]

The fight between Vin (Hobin) vs Changyoong itself imho is a bit underwhelming, but the fun side of it is Changyoong is utterly traumatized by scared of Vin.

Vin has no choice but to show his polycoria now since there's no replacing his super dark sunglasses for now (here's my begging PTJ to insert real consequences of this condition, especially since Vin's happened because of an accident).

Again I'm pretty satisfied with the Daniel vs Logan fight, even more so because there's a new flashback of a humiliating bullying scene that we've never seen in the school episodes (earliest arc). And to those who think that it's too much...well where I come from there are such awful bullies it's bordering on human rights violation (or even a crime).

But the most satisfying comeback from Danny is not the fight itself imho. It's the way he basically told Logan that he didn't care anymore (in my last review I mentioned that he doesn't think Logan is worth his time...and I was right).

Also glad that PTJ erased whatever feelings of amicability between Vin and Logan that was briefly present during the God Dog arc. I feel like it's distanced Vin further from his earlier bully self (I do wish that he would apologize to Duke/Deokhwa tho, especially since he's now a huge fan).

Also too bad that we are not privy to two action scenes. First, no onscreen action scenes with Jay at all. Like none. I get that things are going at the speed of lightning right now but I enjoy watching Systema and Arnis duels and Jay's action scenes were always enjoyable to me due to the elements of surprise (kinda like reading Gray/Sieun's fight scenes from Weak Hero).

Second, Jake (Gimyung) was there (he's the sleeping dude in the ambulance) AS AN ALLIED MEMBER HECK YEAH. AND I'M GLAD TO SEE HIM IN CASUAL CLOTHES (looking much younger and fresher after a staycation in a hoodie). But we saw nothing of what he did.

Well at least he left this in his wake (which impressed Taejin and a new goon Jo Yisoo).

Overall, I'm looking forward to reading the next episode. I suppose having Jake around means that out of the three experiment victims, Samuel (Seongeun) is going to be rescued by Jake, then Johan (Yohan) by Zack, and Big Danny by Danny.

Dear PTJ, please develope your female characters

Someone complaining abt the way PTJ writes his female characters (truly, a never seen before concept); 1st Afilliate Arc and Cheongliang Arc spoilers (at this point, I think most people are up to date w/ the story, but I'm still gonna put this warning just in case)

Look, I don't take Lookism super seriously. In fact, I think I never did that, mainly thanks to the outlandish concepts it had since the beginning. I'm just here to have fun at this point, and to finally learn the truth about Daniel's 2nd body (omg, it's been 400+ chapters-).

I definitely wasn't expecting to find super well written female characters (even though I definitely should, it's 2024, for God's sake-), something a good number of fighting-related webtoons seem to struggle with. But damn, does Lookism waste its female characters in a way not many have done before.

Since the focus of the story has shifted primarly towards fighting and taking down the Four Crews and Charles Choi, I'm gonna focus on two of the characters most connected to these aspects: Mary Kim and Crystal Choi (ik Lua and Sally are also connected in this way, but I don't really have a lot to say about them and, besides, they've already been covered by another user here on Tumblr)

Mary Kim

The perfect opportunity to get her more involved came up not so long ago, in the ep just before the Allied vs 1st Afilliate fight properly started. We see Mary's reaction upon hearing Vin Jin tell her that Taejin Cheon is alive; we can see her anger asclear as day both in her expression and her words. She literally expresses how much she wants to kill this guy.

And yet, PTJ doesn't make her go and get her revenge. Instead, we have Vin Jin basically saying that he will do it for her because 'his hands are already dirty" (i heavily paraphrased his words, but you get it), which to me, at least, doesn't make sense.

Time and time again we see how close the two of them are in spite of the many jabs they throw at each other. Even without knowing the details of their shared past in Cheongliang (which comes up a couple episodes later), it's very strange that she would let Vin jin go to face him just like that.

By this point, it's already stablished that he murdered somebody, an act that even if deserved by the deceased person, takes a mental toll on the one who does it. Taking this into account, I don't see why Mary would just let who's basically her best friend go through the same thing again, alone. And I especially don't see why she would obey him and stay behind. Her, Mary, the person who never takes Vin Jin's bullshit and always calls him out.

Why not have them both go together? It would be a great opportunity to 1) deal with the last negative reminder of their past, and gain a little bit of closure once and for all, and 2) have Mary finally fight seriously and be able to demonstrate why she's called 'The Empress of Two Seconds' and why she's considered so strong.

We've only seen her take down minor opponents a very, very small number of times, all of which are altercations that don't ever last too long (i guess this last thing is to back up her nickname but, eh)

TLDR: Let Mary dirty her hands as much as Vin. Let them take down together one of the people who has brought them so much pain as the pair of strong besties they are. Stop telling us how strong she is and actually commit to showing it.

Crystal Choi

Oh boy, this character-

Like, you mean to tell me that the sole offspring/child of the Big Bad Guy tm the protagonist and his friends are meant to take down, who also happens to be friends with said protagonist, doesn't play a major role on the story? Absolutely insane

And that isn't even taking into account that she also has 2 bodies, which is something only one other character (Daniel, the PROTAGONIST), has and is a major plot point

I'd like to see her be more aware of her privilege as a rich person. Yeah, she was relentlesstly bullied and undermined for her appeareance (which is a horrible thing for anybody to go through) but at least she wasn't poor, too. Does she actually use her money or her status as the daughter of one of the richest men in Korea to change things or solve problems?

Jay literally bought an ambulance of the same type used by the 1st Afilliate so that Allied could sneak in, so why can't Crystal do something similar to help them, too? She helped them during the Gambling Arc by bringing Kouji

I'd like to see her realize and come to terms with the fact that her father's a horrible person. I don't think she knows everything that's going on behind closed doors, but she's definitely smart enough to have noticed that there's something shady going on with his bussiness.

Let her discover the truth. Let her pick either her father's or Daniel's side (the latter which I believe is the most plausible, since she doesn't seem the type to excuse murder, extorsion, etc.). She could act as an informant, helping Allied from the inside.

Heck, you could have her fight, too, if you wanted to. She trained with Gun, after all. And yeah, maybe she's not as strong as the other characters, but we know that she can hold her own against most people. We've seen it.

TLDR: how the hell do you set up a character with so much potential and don't do anything with it. Also, think abt the angst potential!

Final thoughts, I guess:

I think that Crystal siding with Allied has a higher chance of happening than PTJ letting Mary fight. There's still a good chunk of the story yet to be told, so anything could happen.

I'm actually considering believing that the reason we rarely see the female characters is that they, also, are working secretly to take down the Four Crews and it's gonna get revealed in the last arc for the sake of my sanity

another thing I like about the lookism anime so far is the fact that they don’t downplay jay

one of my biggest concerns with the anime was that they were going to either overlook Jay, or downplay him as a character and how he looks and feels about Daniel and I was really worried they were going to either cut that out of his character entirely or they were going to downplay it

it’s just really nice to see like they didn’t do that. They were sticking very much to the source material and even like re-creating key moments about him frame by frame like Daniels birthday episode and we get to see how much he was agonizing over the note to daniel

and the way we always get to see Jay’s perspective like Daniel could be doing something and the camera will pan to Jay and we’ll get to see his reaction like in the webtoon, or the way that Jay is very much constantly aware of Daniel and is there for Daniel and will be ready to throw down accordingly

I also love the fact that he still doesn’t speak in the anime. like he didn’t speak in the web comic at all. It was just Daniel translating his silence and him being right so that’s nice to see. like he didn’t speak in the web comic, What is he going to say in the anime?

(I think the only thing that’s really missing is that episode where Jay gives up smoking because he overhears someone saying that when they stopped smoking they met the love of their life, and he throws out his cigarette while thinking about Daniel. but I think it’s less that they didn’t put that part in and like that part hasn’t come up yet. I can’t really remember which episode it was like in the web comic, but like once we get there and it’s in the anime, it’ll be perfect)

Lookism

Episode 1 : How it all started.

Sypnosis: This is a fic I started for fun. Consists of a lookism oc I had an idea of.

It was as if a elastic band was tightly clasped around her head. Not only when she woke up, she was feeling very light headed but also her head was throbbing. She slowly got up and held her head, trying to ease the tension in her head in some way, hoping for some relief, her eyes squeezed shut.

'When was the last time I had a headache like this... Ugh.. ' She thought and groaned.

While being unbearable at first. It quickly subsided into a light ache.

She then got up to take some medicine for the headache, relief and relaxation hitting her as she felt ready to sleep again.

She stopped in her tracks and frantically looked around her surroundings.

The room was minimalistic and aesthetic. She stood between her balcony on her right and bed, the balcony containing many plants hanging from the railing, from the balcony, you could see a beautiful scenery of city life, tall buildings and the beautiful night sky. The room itself was spacious, and her bed faced the door on her left. There were inbuilt closets on the wall, some inches next to the door, and on the opposite of it, there were some cabinets for books, some photos and other stuff. And at the end oth the room was a study desk.

Butterflies formed in her stomach. A feeling of dread filled her senses. This wasn't her room.

Her heartbeat quickened, she could feel trickles of sweat forming in her forehead , she could feel a new sensation of adrenaline filling her nerves, as she became hyperaware of her surroundings. She wiped off the sweat in her palms and grabbed a nearby thing, anything that could act as a weapon. As she went towards the door to leave this place.

'Where am I!? This is certainly not my room, neither a place I know of! I have to get out of here. ' she thought to herself as she moved forward.

She widened her eyes and immediately stopped in her tracks. She approached the beside the door mirror in complete shock. She touched her face in complete disbelief.

The person in front of the mirror had long, soft and wavy brunette hair. Her face, smooth and soft, her eyes, a mixture of almond and upturned eyes, and had dark coloured iris. Not only that, she was fairly tall, being around.. About 5'5 . She had a feminine body, although not to the extreme. The person in front of the mirror was... Pretty.

She calmed herself down and sat down to think.

'I'm.. Really pretty.. But that isn't the point. Why am I looking different??? Wait.. Am I.. Isekaied into a different universe.'

She felt more shocked as a the light bulb in her head lit up. If a person had this emoji '🤯' as their reaction then it would definitely be her.

'makes sense ig?? I mean isn't this how most of those isekai tropes go?? I would've liked it if it was a fantasy realm tho, this realm looks similar to our world. Let's find out which world I'm in.' She thought, somehow relaxed by the whole situation, and not panicked anymore. One would be almost surprised and suspicious of her ability to adjust so quickly. She let go of the weapon and got up to now search through her room.

She was able to quickly find her first possible clue. It was from her phone.. Er... Well not exactly her phone in a way, but the phone of the body she was in.

She immediately got her first clue. She noticed the way all social media apps were named a bit different from what she knew of, It was almost like the author was trying to avoid copyright issues. But she couldn't quite get her hands on what webtoon Or world it exactly was from.

She decided to open Ingstagram first. The first thing in her feed immediately gave away which world she exactly was.

She immediately saw a pic of DG on her feed. She.. Was in the world of Lookism. A world which is... Quite dangerous if I was being honest.

She furrowed her eyebrows and immediately facepalmed. To be isekaied into the world of Lookism isn't exactly what she wished for. Not only the people here are quite troublesome, almost everyone is a gang wannabe and one wrong move, you might be under the eyes of Charles Choi or Gun and it was... Not something she wished for. Especially in case of Charles Choi. Have you seen how he murdered Kwak Jichang!? Bro is a ruthless old man.

On one side tho this pic of DG is exquisitely scrumptious—

Like a cartoon character, she shook her head to wipe away any thoughts like that from her head. There were much important tasks at hand.

She then looked through her ingsta page. She was shocked by the amount of followers she had. She had like 50k followers!? And her whole page consisted of beautiful art pieces and photographs of beautiful and aesthetic sceneries. It was almost as if her dream had come true. But that was very much it. There wasn't much she couldn't find about herself on ingsta.

She decided to look through her personal contacts. And from reading everything she was able to summarize the following information.

Firstly, her parents didn't live in Korea and were abroad and were tied to their jobs there. Making their visits to see her daughters rare . Secondly, she had a sister.

'I should see her next morning' she thought to herself.

Thirdly, her parents were rich rich, and they gave her an monthly allowance of .... Holy crap., it was for household purposes and also for other personal needs, which also included her sisters allowance. fourthly, She is supposed to go to Jae Won high school the day after tomorrow and that would be her first day there. And lastly, She was a lone wolf. No friends till now.

She kept her phone aside and thoroughly searched her room. She was able to find some important documents about herself and some school information.

Her name was now Yoo Ji-Yeon. Currently 17 years old in Korean years . Her birthday was now in 1st August. Luckily no allergies or any medical history.

This was the bare information she needed about herself. She was planning to act like how she.. Currently, it was going to be weird acting like someone she was not. Ji-Yeon planned to slowly change her antics in front of her family, more specifically in front of her sister.

While thinking of all this, Ji-Yeon heard a loud sob coming from the room beside hers. She immediately decided to approach the room, assuming it was her sister's room.

She stood in front of the door, and could hear sobs coming from inside the room. The door had a label written "Mi-Sun" , written in bubbly letters.

Ji-Yeon, knocked on the door.

"Mi-Sun... Is everything alright? " She softly spoke,worried.

The sobs stopped all together. When she said that.

"I'm coming in. " Ji-Yeon said, concern in her voice as she twisted the door knob and opened the door.

She saw Mi-Sun as soon as she opened the door. The poor child was curled up in a ball, her hands shield her head as she hid her face in her knees. Ji-Yeon's expression softened as she slowly approached Mi-Sun's curled up form , kneeling down to her level.

"What's wrong? " She softly spoke, concern written on her face. Mi-Sun said nothing and continued to sob and mumble some words which she was unable to hear properly.

Although one specific word made her heart stop. Mi-Sun... Mumbled a specific nickname. A nickname which only a specific person in Ji-Yeon's previous life used to call her with. The atmosphere had just turned grave. Ji-Yeon called out for Mi-Sun. Not by calling her current name, but by calling her by the nickname she used to call her sister with.

Mi-Sun stopped sobbing and mumbling. Her head rose up to look at Ji-Yeon. Her red and cheeks wet from tears, her eyes glossy. There was snot running down her nose. Mi-Sun called out Ji-Yeon again, this time not using the nickname but now by Ji-Yeon's previous name.

All of Ji-Yeon's suspicions came true, she didn't know how to react but her actions spoke louder than words or reaction. She immediately reached out and embraced Mi-Sun into a tight hug, a newfound worry in her voice and mind.

"Why.. How did you end up here too... " Ji-Yeon spoke, as she gently combed through Mi-Sun's hair to comfort her, worry evident in her voice.

"I... I dont know sis.... When I woke up.. I was just here... " Mi-Sun stuttered and struggled to speak between loud sobs.

Ji-Yeon patiently waited and comforted Mi-Sun till she calmed down. Calmly explaining her the situation afterwards.

Mi-Sun's reaction was normal. Ji-Yeon afterwards helped Mi-Sun to gather information about herself. While also giving away any other relevant information. It would definitely take Mi-Sun some time to adjust to this world.

Ji-Yeon was able to gather Mi-Sun's basic information.

Yoo Mi-Sun. 16 in Korean years. Birthday in 22nd August. Currently going in middle school.

"So these are the information you'll need for now ok? " Ji-Yeon said, explaining other stuff along the way.

Mi-Sun listened intently and nodded.

The two decided to go back to sleep, after all both of then had their first day at school tomorrow.

A first chapter of the lookism fic i had in mind. This has been in my drafts for eternity lol.

Anyways, I'm thinking about doing some oc character drawings so that there is a clear image of how they both look like.

Lookism: Ep 467 Reaction

(my previous episodes reactions were posted on my old fanblog @lookismstuff)

SPOILERS ALERT

Jay was so glad to see the Body (yes I will have to refer to Big Daniel as that 😔), that is until it attacked him viciously. Even so, badly injured, Jay still hugged the body and refused to fight back. (DANIEL YOU OWE JAY A LONG ASS EXPLANATION AND APOLOGY, OTHERWISE JAY SHOULD SHOOT YOU IN THE HEAD ISTG AND IF HE WON'T DO IT I'LL DO IT I MEAN I LOVE YOU BUT) .

Daniel was incensed. After all wasn't Jay their...no..his...their...his friend (gosh this two body thing makes it hard for me to determine whether or not I should separate the two Daniels)? But of course the Body couldn' be reasoned with. And it didn't care about morals, feelings and honor either. After all it was only a shell.

It kept attacking Daniel relentlessly and Daniel had no time to fight back, since it was fast and strong. The blunt force of its attacks were increasing too.

However, Daniel's training took over. He stopped his old tendency to run away as he remembered what Gun taught him about how the UItimate Instinct (UI) state was only a state of inhibition removal, after all. It was only as strong as the person originally was.

Even though Daniel was still scared to death and was unable to awaken his UI state yet in this fight, he managed to utilize his copy ability by copying the moves of Gen I kings, and of course "The Grandmaster" (Ildaejongsa), Gun Park. (I KNEW IT PTJ IS IP MAN'S HUGE FAN)

But Daniel wasn't fast enough for The Body when he tried to execute James Lee's capoeira kick, and he was thrown mercilessly as he was thinking, in panic, that now it was all over for him.

Just as Daniel was losing consciousness Vasco (yass!), Jerry, and Warren (yeehah!!) came to the rescue. The latter two put on a brave front while fully realizing that what they were up against was a monster, but Vasco was dismayed that "Little Daniel" and "Big Daniel" fought (DANIEL ISTG YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR FRIENDS, OR I'LL MAKE YOU I MEAN PTJ) when they were good friends.

But this is Daniel's Zarathustran journey, after all. And so he stood up again, all battered but now in UI mode, ready to face his own worst enemy: himself.

Tell me if it's just me, but Weak Hero is becoming increasingly boring every episode they focus on the gang war. Gray hasn't appeared in an episode for months and he's the main character. That's narrative suicide.

I hope after this long, Lookism-esque war arc, we can get back to what made the series enjoyable: Gray and his pals.

Teddy taking care of his cats

Gray continuing his search for Stephen

Eugene learning how to stand up for himself

Forrest and Grape being besties

Less fighting, more vibing.

Outside of ranking purposes, all the fights are boring if they don't directly involve Gray. I know this is an action webtoon, but it didn't become as popular as it is because people enjoy reading about high schoolers beating each other up.

Reaction to Ep 460

SPOILERS ALERT

Well it turns out that all the forgiveness from Heather (Hyeeun)'s mom was pried almost from her cold dead hands and Sally (Serim) had to beg and beg...

I wish Heather's mom was better written than this or something instead of being made to change her mind in the span of hours. The only thing that I'm happy about her characterization is her sympathy for Olly (Ochun) whose parents didn't even mourn him properly.

Anyway I wish Hudson (Hyunseong) knew that Eli (Jang Hyun) saved his life (and Jibeom's) from whatever monster this is. I bet when Hudson meets Eli again he'll just attack Eli blindly (unless maybe Vasco saves time by explaining stuff). And yeah if Eli makes it (idk really).

Anyway I think Park Taejoon heard the readers' complaint that Logan (Taesang) was let go too easily and Daniel (Hyungseok) behaved a bit ooc when he called Logan "pig".

So PTJ had them meet again (I can already sense the upcoming complaints from international fans regarding the repetition) but Daniel treats Logan level-headedly this time, with the added bonus of some copy of Kwak Jichang's techniques. Yes, THE Kwak Jichang whose death I'm still grieving for.

Also finally Vin (Hobin)'s and Jay (Jayeol)'s brawl time against Ji Changyong and Lee Dosoo. Finally! It's been 80,000 years.

I hope the next chapters will move as fast and as efficiently as readers hope for. At least now four characters will move together instead of duel separarately. It's sad to read the complaints (which I know readers have the perfect rights to make) when contrasted against PTJ's bizarrely busy life (which reminds me of my own burnout).

Daniel and Logan / Hyungseok and Taesang (Reaction to Ep 460 - Pt 2)

Why I love this part more than their initial encounter in this arc. Hint: it's related to the Korean text

Mild spoilers

When Logan (Taesang) threatened Daniel (Hyungseok) in order to make him leave, Daniel's response is much better than previously (in Ep 452).

Since I think it's going to be lost in translation, I'll just mention that when he said "태상아, 그냥 도망치지 그랬어" ("Taesang-ah, why didn't you just run away?") in the Korean text, the 아 (ah) here indicates a degree of familiarity. It's the way you talk to your friends, maybe your lovers, your kids, people below your station (if you're really, really rude), maybe your enemies (to taunt them).

My point is Daniel sees Logan as both someone who's not worth his time and someone of his age whom he's known for so long. It's way more familiar than if he just calls Logan in Korean as 이태상 (Lee Taesang). It implies that Daniel is all too familiar with Logan's moves now. It's a taunt in a cool way.

Way to go, Danny!!

Lookism: Ep 469 Reaction

SPOILER ALERT

In this episode, a recovery was made of a long lost relationship.

In a flashback, Jake received Jinyoung's red headband from Bongae, with the message to make sure that Jinyoung saw that, because Jinyoung left it in Bongae's hand after he and Gabryong knocked down "a great power". That headband was Jinyoung's hero getup, something he wore when he was out there saving the world.

Bongae was realistic about this mission, however, and he was sure that Jinyoung would fight Jake because the pharmacologist had been disturbed for a long, long time.

Onto Jake's duel versus Jinyoung. The younger man was cornered as Jinyoung kept pummeling him with Gabryong's and even Tom's technique. Seeing the red headband just incensed Jinyoung since he thought that Jake (or rather, Jake's brother the patricide killer) must have killed Bongae too.

It was not until Jake was pushed to the edge and he swore to stand up to protect his people and wouldn't fall, like Gabryong, that Jinyoung was snapped out of his drug-induced oblivion.

Tearing up as he remembered young Jake (no I'm not crying, smoke got in my eyes), Jinyoung offered Jake a hug, even as Jake punched him. He stopped as he saw Jinyoung crying and apologizing to him, for not being there for everyone and for "letting" Gabryong die.

Just as Jinyoung almost told Jake what happened the day Gapryong was murdered, Alexander burst in to tell them that things were going badly for the rest of the Allied guys. Jake wondered if it was Hangyeol, but no. As we could guess, The Second Body had managed to utterly exhaust Vasco, Warren, and Jerry while it still stood undefeated.

Jake still remembered that "Big Daniel" (gosh Daniel just own up to all of your friends already fgs) was terrible "in that state" but before he could do anything, Jinyoung tied the red headband around his head and said that he'd take care of it.

Jake warned that "Big Daniel" was dangerous, but Jinyoung insisted on facing it, saying that he'd do anything for Jake. That from then on, he was on Jake's side...

Goodness the death flags for Jinyoung. I don't know how many of you watch kdramas and films but sacrifice of a character who feels guilty for not remembering/for being lost for a long time/for being bad is a common trope in them. It's as if the Korean popular media want to punish these characters for forgetting, or maybe it's simply a matter of different culture, different tastes.
