soul(mate) searching
Summary: Sebastian is sad because he doesn't have a soulmate like the rest of the team. Loretta comforts him.
Word Count: 1,407 words
Trigger Warnings: none
Tumblr media
There really is no hope for me.
Sebastian thought, as he watched Hannah and Tammy walk out of the morgue hand in hand.
First Pride and Rita, now those two. It was as if fate- or whatever controlled life, Sebastian didn't know what did no matter how much he tried to find out- was trying to see how much he could take before his heart broke.
The steady pulse of pain in his chest and inconsistent beating beneath his trembling fingertips proved to him that, after months of feeling left out and lonely whenever he saw couples interacting around him, his heart had finally given up hiding the emotions and sorrow it felt. It was finally expunging them, and in a violent way.
Sebastian's long, lanky legs collapsed beneath him and he crumpled to the tile floor of the lab, his tall body curled up into an impossibly tight ball as he rocked up and down, patting his shoulders with his shaking hands in a futile attempt to self soothe.
Outside the morgue, it was a beautiful bright sunny day. There were no clouds besides small tiny cotton-like clumps, so the sky was a wide tapestry of blue. The voices of overjoyed soulmates laughing and playing together despite the oppressively hot New Orleans weather just put the last nail in the coffin, and Sebastian felt the pain of loneliness spreading to every corner of his body.
Loneliness was a cancer. And it was metastasizing within him, killing every ounce of his hope that he'd ever be loved, ever be looked at as anything other than a skinny, nerdy lab technician.
Can there ever be a cure for this?
He thought as his sobs grew in volume and intensity, deafening the joyful cacophony that could previously be heard from outside the windows of the lab.
Will I ever feel loved by anyone?
He wondered, his body curling in on itself like a turtle trying to hide within its shell.
As his pain threatened to drown him, Sebastian tried to keep his head above water by thinking of the members of his team. They were his friends. They cared about him. As long as they'd be around, he wasn't lonely.
But it wasn't the same...
No amount of friendly hugs, shoulder bumps, or smiles could heal the pain that he felt deep in his heart. Everyone else in the world had a soulmate, so why didn't he? What made him so much different than anyone else?
It wasn't as if he had sky-piercingly high standards. Anyone who loved him, who would care for him- and yes, anyone who would put up with his addiction to Dungeons and Dragons- was attractive to him. But for some reason, he just wasn't equally as attractive.
Thinking about all the relationships he'd attempted to have only for them to end in sorrow just made the waves loom higher over his head.
Pain was an ocean. And it was pulling him down to its depths, submerging any hope of belonging, of having a healthy and positive relationship with anyone.
Can someone dive under and save me?
He thought, trying to imagine another person in the room with him, gently caressing him and whispering sweet words into his ears.
Will I ever belong with anyone?
He looked up, and met the dark eyes of a very concerned Loretta Wade.
She knelt down by his side, pulling his lanky body into her arms. Resting his head against her chest, he felt the rise and fall of her breaths and her steady heartbeat. Slowly but surely, the repetitive sounds and motions lulled him back into a relaxed state.
"What is it, Sebastian?"
Her tone, usually warm and friendly, was now husky with hidden sorrow and dyed boldly with concern. Seeing the man she thought of as her son breaking down like this seemingly randomly... it destroyed her. She needed to know what was wrong, needed to help him.
Loretta had always been motherly to Sebastian. She'd noticed his socially awkward nature from the first moment she'd met him, and had made it her personal mission to take him under her wing and nurture him until he felt comfortable being himself.
Despite regretting her decision many times (every time she heard him ramble on about something totally unrelated to whatever topic was being discussed, she cursed herself a tiny bit for insisting that being open about his interests was totally okay) she never regretted the love she had for him.
She herself had contemplated her lack of a soulmate many times, unbeknownst to Sebastian. But, unlike him, she found herself content with her current state. She had her dear friends on the team... and she had Sebastian, her dear son-that-wasn't-really-her-son. Relationships scared her somewhat, after her negative experience with her ex husband. Being single was by all means not the norm, especially in a city such as New Orleans, but she embraced her status.
Turning her attention back to the trembling young man sitting on the floor next to her, she gently stroked his shoulders and back. Repetitive motion was something she knew calmed him down, so she engaged in it, and smiled when she heard his breathing starting to be less ragged.
"Thanks, 'Retta," he whispered in a voice made hoarse by tears.
The way he shortened her name was really rather cute, and it made Loretta smile.
"Why are you so upset, Sebastian? Is it..."
She trailed off, not wanting to bring up the issue of soulmates with him. She knew it was a sore subject, and didn't want to upset him again.
Sebastian was a smart man. He knew exactly what she was going to say, knew that, as someone else who was bereft of a soulmate, she could understand his woes.
"I was doing some soul searching," he muttered, trying to sound casual even though his heart was dying more with every second he thought about the topic of soulmates.
Loretta arched one of her eyebrows, curious as to what relevance that had to the current topic.
"I realized... maybe I don't deserve a soulmate. Maybe I'll never... never have one..."
He looked down at his hands sadly, noticing that they were beginning to tremble again from all the excess emotions he was feeling. With a deep sigh, he looked back up at Loretta, who seemed deeply saddened by his words.
The tender touch of her strong, callused fingers on his hand took him by surprise. She had noticed his symptoms, and was trying to treat them. Even when it came to love, she acted like a doctor.
"That's not true, Sebastian! You do deserve a soulmate. It's just..."
She intertwined her fingers with his, and the two of them locked eyes. Both of them had tears threatening to fall, the emotional impact of the moment evident in their faces.
"You haven't met the right woman yet. When you do, your love will be beautiful."
Shyly, Sebastian corrected Loretta's statement.
"Not just a woman. Anybody... I'd take anybody. Any gender... it's fine."
Loretta's eyes lit up at this realization and she shook Sebastian a bit in her excitement.
"So, you're pansexual?"
Tammy had schooled the whole team on the LGBTQ+ community shortly after beginning to date Hannah, and Loretta had faithfully taken notes, remembering any important details just in case she treated anyone or met anyone who was a part of it. She never knew it would come in handy with Sebastian, but she should have figured it would.
Sebastian nodded. His anxiety seemed to have spiked at the mention of his identity, and Loretta resumed stroking his back to calm him down.
"I'm proud of you for being yourself, for finding yourself. I know it can be hard sometimes."
Her voice was gentle and motherly, and it plus the gentle touches of her hands on his skin helped calm him down.
"Do you think I'll ever find a soulmate?"
He asked in a shy, gentle voice, like a child seeking reassurance and love from a parent.
Loretta bent over and kissed him gently on the forehead.
"You certainly will. And when you do, you'll be the happiest man in the world."
Her words calmed him, and he rose up from the floor, groaning in agony as his legs protested the motion. Loretta joined him, and together, they resumed work with smiles on their faces, confident that one day soon, they'd find their soulmates.

I feel like just based on vibes Logan would be really into classic country and rock. Maybe not hair metal but stuff like Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, The Doors, Zeppelin. Probably some Joan Jett and Ramones, probably doesn't really fuck with The Beatles.
Meanwhile, Wade is ALL about pop music in the most literal sense. Anything that makes it into the top 100 or is culturally relevant as far as music, he is on it. Man would have been balls deep in the Kendrick/Drake beef. Owns no albums but has a Spotify full of singles from the 80s onward.
All that being said, Wade tries to get Logan into new music. Keeps throwing shit at the wall and nothing is sticking. Finally decides to hit some mid-2000s pop-punk and now has to deal with Logan listening to Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge in his room when he thinks he's home alone.

Dark Skin Directory
I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...
EDIT: Okay, so the one that I did for BFCD does not work, so I am posting this one to see if it works, and if not, they’ll both be WIPS until I have the time to repair them

Members of NCIS’ D.C., Hawai’i, Los Angeles and New Orleans bureaus have joined forces for a good cause (and the crossover photo of your dreams).
Past and present stars of the popular CBS franchise united Wednesday on the SAG-AFTRA picket line. The group selfie, snapped and shared by NCIS: Los Angeles’ Daniela Ruah (aka Special Agent Kensi Blye), also features NCIS’ Brian Dietzen (Dr. Jimmy Palmer), NCIS: Hawai’i’s Vanessa Lachey (Special Agent-in-Charge Jane Tennant) and Kian Talan (Alex Tennant), and NCIS: New Orleans’ Scott Bakula (Supervisory Special Agent Dwayne Cassius Pride) and CCH Pounder (medical examiner Loretta Wade).
“Today was strong and necessary,” Ruah wrote on Instagram. “To all the @iatse & @dga members and supporters of @wgastrikeunite & @sagaftra I am so grateful to have walked alongside all of you today. Saw so many people I have loved for over 14 years coming together again in strength.”
Tumblr media
NCIS: Los Angeles wrapped its 14-season run in May, while New Orleans went off the air in 2021, after seven seasons. Of note: L.A. vet LL Cool J is set to guest-star during NCIS: Hawai’i Season 3 as Special Agent Sam Hanna, and former castmate Ruah told TVLine’s Inside Line that she is open to similarly reprising her role as Kensi someday, somewhere.
CBS in January staged the first three-way crossover between NCIS, NCIS: Hawai’i and NCIS: Los Angeles. Prior to that, there had been assorted two-show crossovers between the mothership and its myriad spinoffs.

The sweet scent of flowers wafted through the air as you cursorily scanned the wedding venue for what felt like the hundredth time.
You couldn't believe you were getting married to the Dwayne Pride, beloved by all of New Orleans. Any woman worth her salt would die to even be looked at by Dwayne, and here you were, the most unworthy human being in the city, marrying him.
After your past relationship, which was more than a little painful and traumatic, you didn't think you deserved anything good. It had taken a long while and a great deal of patience on both your end and Dwayne's to heal your wounds, and even then, there were still scars left behind. But he was a kind and loving man, and he accepted you for who you were, scars and all.
Hearing a wedding march being hummed behind you, you turned around to see Loretta Wade, her arms full of boxes doubtlessly containing decorations. When the two of you made eye contact, she placed the boxes down and rushed to hug her. Loretta gave the best hugs- warm, motherly, and full of reassuring strength. You could use all the strength you could get at this point.
"Anxious about tomorrow?"
She asked, her expert doctor's eye noticing the way you were shifting on your feet and playing with the hem of your shirt.
At first, you didn't want to admit how you felt. Why would you be feeling anxious on the day before the biggest event of your life? You were supposed to be happy, not sick to your stomach and going through scenarios in your head where everything went wrong.
But then you saw the genuine concern in Loretta's gentle dark eyes, and you sighed deeply, knowing that lying would be pointless.
"I don't know why!"
You exclaimed, the anger you were directing at yourself evident in your tone.
Loretta frowned at your sudden change in tone and placed her hands on your shoulders, directing you to look her straight in her eyes and never look away. She was about to lecture you, you knew it.
With yet another sigh, you made eye contact with her, and prepared to take your medicine.
"My dear. Being anxious before a wedding is normal. I know I sure was before my own!"
She laughed, but it was a bitter laugh, full of pain.
You knew that her ex husband had not been a good partner, what with his constantly controlling and possessive behavior. It killed you to know that such a sweet woman had to experience such pain. She didn't deserve it.
Nobody deserves to be in a relationship like that, you thought to yourself, then begrudgingly added, not even you.
Your ex boyfriend, Douglas Hamilton- yes, that Douglas Hamilton, the mayor of New Orleans- hadn't been physically abusive in any way, nor did he ever verbally berate you (at least, not typically). But he was a busy man, and all the work he had to do left his nerves constantly frayed. It was a constant struggle, coming home and not knowing whether he'd be in a good mood and snuggle with you or be in a foul mood and throw things around like an Olympic discus thrower.
Whenever you approached him and tried to address his volatile emotions, he would get upset and constantly tell you that "it's normal" and that you were "just overreacting". He constantly assured you that he'd never physically hurt you, that he loved you, but living in the same house with someone like him ended up doing irreversible damage to your psyche.
So you left him.
It was a messy breakup, to say the least. Douglas had screamed, thrown a glass at you and cut your forehead, and then proceeded to cry and beg you to come back to him, insisting that you didn't know and could never know how much he loved you.
You had wound up kicked out of the home you'd lived in for years- you had lived in Douglas' home, but when you broke up, he had kicked you out without even letting you gather your belongings first- and alone on a late night in New Orleans.
Terrified and injured, you ran to the first public place you found, which happened to be the Trutone. Dwayne had been closing up, but when he saw you, he gladly ushered you in, treated your wounds, and, after hearing your story, offered you a home in the spare room of his apartment.
At first, you didn't trust him at all, not wanting to get into yet another toxic relationship. But as time went on, you learned that Dwayne was nothing more than a teddy bear with a professional facade. He would gladly listen to your pain anytime, and always promised to be there for you when you needed him, and he was.
Years passed, and you never saw Douglas again. His behavior and the way he manipulated you would forever scar you, but with Dwayne as your caretaker and lover, you had nothing to fear. Even if your crazy ex boyfriend did come by to pester you- which you doubted very highly judging by the fact that years had passed with no sign of him- you were safe and secure in the knowledge that you would never be hurt by him as long as your boyfriend was there to protect you.
After five painstakingly long, excruciatingly beautiful years of dating, Dwayne proposed to you. The proposal was a simple affair, as befitting his personality, but you couldn't have asked for more. You accepted, obviously, and that had led you to this situation...
"Dear? What is it?"
Loretta's sweet voice was a dam in the flowing river of your memories, stopping them short and bringing you back to the current time.
"Just... remembering the past, Loretta."
Your tone was melancholy, and she noticed that immediately. Knowing you were most likely remembering your previous relationship with Douglas, she pulled you into her arms again and held you tightly, stroking your back with her strong hands. The repetitive smooth motions of her callused palms, felt through the thin material of your shirt, brought you comfort, and you smiled up at the medical examiner, who winked cheekily in response.
Eventually, after what felt like a painfully short duration of time, Loretta let go of you and picked up her boxes again, busying herself with putting the final touches on the wedding venue's decorations.
As you turned to go, she called out to you one last time.
"My dear?"
You perked up, and turned to look at her.
"Yes, Loretta?"
"Nothing is going to go wrong. Try to relax and be excited."
--------------------------------------------------------------
You almost believed Loretta's previous statement. After all, you were almost through your vows, and besides Percy and LaSalle getting into a fight in the back row over something that was most likely pointless, no major crises had occurred.
Dwayne was an Adonis in his simple black tuxedo. His gray-blue eyes sparkled enticingly in the bright natural light of the room, like a cloudy sky. You wanted to kiss him so badly, but you had to refrain from carrying out on your urge until the minister allowed the two of you to kiss.
"If anyone here can think of any reason why these two people before me should not be joined together in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace."
At first, there was silence, as expected. The minister opened his mouth to continue, and a voice called out from the back of the aisle.
"I'd like to give my reason!"
Hearing that voice sent chills up your spine, and you unwittingly leaned closer to Dwayne, needing his touch, his strength, to anchor you.
The whole hall fell silent, all eyes on the protestor, who happened to be your ex boyfriend, Douglas Hamilton.
"Speak, sir."
The minister instructed, looking as shocked as everyone else at the sudden incursion.
Douglas took a deep breath and tousled his hair before speaking. Every last word he said made you tremble, and you yearned, more than anything, for Dwayne's comforting arms to be around you in that moment. But he was distracted, eyeing Douglas with hatred so thick and palpable you could reach out and touch it.
"I'll put it to you plain and simple, Minister. This woman does not, and never will, belong to Dwayne Pride."
You noticed Dwayne's hands clench into fists at that, the anger in his body visible through the whites of his knuckles showing.
Looking up at him with tears in your eyes, you silently begged him to say something, anything, to end this nightmare. But he didn't. He just stood and silently listened to Douglas' barrage of lies.
"She was mine for several years. We had a pleasant relationship, an amicable one, full of mutual respect and other... good Christian values."
You scoffed at that and muttered, "Bullshit," in a low voice, not wanting the minister to hear your sacreligious language. Dwayne met your eyes and nodded, evidently agreeing with that expletive.
"But then, one night, she just left me. I didn't know where she was, I searched for years, worried sick!"
Silently, tearfully, you pleaded with Dwayne not to believe his lies, to keep on loving you. He still hadn't acknowledged you at all, minus that slight head nod earlier, and it was making you sick with anxiety. If only he could just hold your hand, pat it, anything to show that he still cared!
"You and I both know that's a lie, Hamilton!"
Your pleas were answered, as Dwayne began to walk towards Douglas with his fists raised in a combative gesture. Loretta, LaSalle, Percy, and Gregorio all leapt up from their seats, ready for anything. You noticed the silhouette of a pistol in LaSalle's pocket, and silently prayed it didn't come to that.
The minister, who was now very confused and wanted desperately to avoid all out conflict, called out in a deep, resonant voice, hands raised to the sky as if he was praying during mass.
"Is there anyone here who can corroborate Mr. Hamilton's claims?"
"Mayor Hamilton," Douglas hissed angrily, always a stickler for making everyone know his rank and power.
"All men are equal in God's eyes, sir."
The minister retorted, evidently not a fan of Douglas' combative personality.
Nobody responded to the minister's previous question, leaving Douglas the lone supporter of his protest. One voice alone, raised in protest, led to nothing, and the NCIS team ended up escorting him out despite his protests and threats of violence against them.
While Douglas was being led away, you looked up at Dwayne, who still was visibly shaken and angry.
"Love?"
You whispered in a shaky voice, not expecting a response but deeply desiring one.
"Darlin'... you're safe. He's gone. We're safe."
His voice was gruff with emotion, and as he pulled you into his strong arms, you felt as if the world was melting around you, leaving the two of you alone together while everyone else disappeared.
"Everything he said-"
You said in a voice choked by tears.
"Shhh... I know. They're all lies. I know..."
"I'm sorry, I-"
"You may now kiss the bride."
The minister's consent shocked both you and Dwayne into silence, and the whole audience stared at the two of you as you stood in the middle of the aisle, looking up at one another with burning passion in your eyes.
"Dwayne-"
"I love you."
Dwayne locked his lips with yours, immediately seeking entrance with his tongue. You opened your mouth slightly, and his tongue entered, moving about and spreading the taste of bourbon and beignets all through your mouth.
You groaned softly, feeling your body grow pliant against his strong muscular chest. As you melted into a puddle in his arms, he finally decided to remove his lips from yours, and the audience cheered and clapped.
"You'll always be mine."
He murmured in a low, sultry voice, his lips lingering near yours again.
A soft moan was all you could manage as his lips connected to yours again, and the euphoria you felt repeated once again.

“Vanessa Roe”, 35 (USA 1973)
Legalizing abortion didn’t make it safe, but many unfortunately assumed that it would. After Roe v Wade, the “safe and legal” myth led many women and girls to their deaths. One of them was the unidentified victim known only as Vanessa Roe.
Vanessa was 35 when she was killed. She underwent a legal abortion at an unspecified American abortion facility. She was 12 weeks pregnant and the unidentified abortionist used the suction method, also known as an aspiration abortion.
After the abortion was finished, Vanessa died. She was found to have suffered a lethal pulmonary embolism as a result of the abortion.
Death by embolism after legal abortion is very well-documented. Abortion can cause air, fetal body parts, placenta shreds, amniotic fluid and more to leak into the bloodstream. A few others who suffered an embolism from legal abortion include Vanessa Preston, Keisha Atkins, 16-year-old Loretta Morton, Sandra Lee Williams, Lynn McNair, Denise Holmes, 16-year-old Erica Richardson, 16-year-old Loretta Morton, Teresa Corbett Smith, L’Echelle Renea Head, Norma Jean Greene, 19-year-old Christina Goesswein, Gaylene Golden, 17-year-old Sharonda Rowe, 16-year-old Christella Marie Forte, Sharon Lee Margrave, Mary Ives, Danielle Roe, Megan Roe, Amy Roe, Ana Roe, Erica Roe, Eden Roe, Katherine Roe, Evie Roe, Elle Roe, Dorothy Roe, Estella Roe, Anne Roe, Ellen Roe, Saanvi Roe, Danielle Roe, Malorie Roe and Nancy Roe.
Legalizing abortion didn’t help Vanessa. It just enabled her cause of death.
Fatal Pulmonary Embolism During Legal Induced Abortion in the United States from 1972-1985, Lawson, Herschel W., MD, Atrash, Hani K., MD, MPH, Franks, Adele L., MD, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vol. 162, No. 4, April 1990, p. 986-990

Pete Wade in 1954, the year he moved to Nashville. Soon after arriving, he joined Ray Price’s band, the Cherokee Cowboys; he went on to work with Mr. Price on and off for almost a decade. During that time, he also toured with Kitty Wells, Elvis Presley and others / Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
A member of the loose aggregation of top-flight session musicians known as the Nashville A-Team, Mr. Wade played on numerous records regarded as classics. Among the best known were Loretta Lynn’s “Fist City” (1968), Lynn Anderson’s “Rose Garden” (1970), Crystal Gayle’s “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” (1977), George Jones’s “He Stopped Loving Her Today” (1980) and John Anderson’s “Swingin’” (1983).
In his decades as a studio musician, Mr. Wade worked with Chet Atkins, Owen Bradley, Billy Sherrill and every other major producer in Nashville, a testament to both his even temperament and his adaptability as a guitarist. He also backed a broad array of non-country artists, among them Julie Andrews, Joan Baez, Perry Como, Little Richard and Dinah Shore.

But…NIS Pride 🤡
Look I don’t think he has the hots but that ain’t for me but I’ll watch it for some NCIS New Orleans crumbs…. and 🤡 possible 🤡 cameo 🤡 of the MILF Loretta Wade *aggressively foaming* but that’s way further like after Fornell doing the deed with Diane
OMG I forgot that’s how they introduced NCIS: New Orleans. I only watched those episodes once years ago.
If I’m being honest, unless fans ask for it I’m not sure if they will feature pride (or the agents that were mentioned in the back door pilot)
