My first open mics were at the Sunset Grill, on the rooftop dining area next door to the Guitar Center on Sunset. My first actual showcase doing a 7 minute set was at the Improv Hollywood on Melrose. I never got up at the Comedy Store but love that place to no end and will forever remain grateful to @theerikmarino and @matthewallentaylor for working with me 10 years ago (can’t believe it’s been so long) to get my feet wet and learn to eat shit on stage. It’s been rough for everyone back home in the USA, especially L.A. since COVID. But one day we WILL return and when we do, I’m coming back. My first job when I first arrived in Los Angeles was at the National Research Group in Hollywood, back in 1992 when I was discharged from the Navy, calling people around the country to talk about movies for the studios who were seeking to ruin movies by trying to please everyone. My favorite job was Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, from 1998-1999. Saw a listing from the great professionals at @trulinerealestate @chioranjulia on the very same street that was me and Mrs S’s first neighborhood when we got our first place together a few months before getting married and got SUPER homesick. It’s been 3 years since I had to come to Japan to help with caregiving for my late mother-in-law in her last days battling ALS. I miss Los Angeles, so much, as does Mrs S. The little brick was out in the mini sandbox and set alight. Inside the box next to it were incense crumbs like the Catholic priests uses when they bring the incense chain into mass.
