NAME: Lostwoods Labyrinth

LOCATION: Various

You never know when or where you’re going to enter the Lostwoods Labyrinth. This is the name given to a stretch of woodlands – about 10 miles in diameter – and the sprawling, maze-like cemetery contained within. Every so often – days, weeks, months – the entire cemetery and woods move to another neighborhood within Wicked’s Rest or somewhere else entirely that no one can locate (though The Scribes have their theories). The woods always seem to be shrouded in darkness and no one knows how old the cemetery is. Many of the headstones simply don’t have dates at all or seem to have been worn down by time. Aboveground, crypts and walls and statues make it extremely hard to navigate the landscape and you’re likely to end up lost. Those who enter mausoleums or end up walking over the soft, often-collapsing earth, will end up underground where there’s even more sprawl and finding the surface again may prove impossible… while you’re alive. 

Despite the constant moving around, a lot of undead do “live” in the Labyrinth. Most ended up there when they were human and were turned by the original resident vampires, zombies, and other undead when they became trapped. It’s common for undead here to become obsessed with finding a way out, tormented for centuries by their desire to be free, to the point where they no longer recognize an escape when it’s right in front of them. Their desperation from when they were alive might have something to do with that.

The woods around the cemetery have a lot of unusual animals in them – not even necessarily of the supernatural sort. Whether they’re unseasonal or from another continent entirely, you never know what you’ll find out there. Some speculate the strange fauna to mean that before its arrival in town, the Labyrinth was appearing outside of Wicked’s Rest, even spanning the globe in its travels, and trapping those who enter along with it for the ride. Now it seems to only blip around Wicked’s Rest other than some spans of time where it can’t be located.

When the cemetery moves to an area, those who were there before become temporarily displaced and seem to not remember anything about what happened or where they were; they simply reappear perfectly well and report nothing remarkable when the cemetery moves on to another location.

Even those who attempt to track the location of the cemetery around town are stumped by the fact it sometimes vanishes for weeks at a time, seemingly nowhere. A couple Scribes and slayers have theorized that during this time, the cemetery is in Bleak Point, somehow within the mineral abnormality.

The vampires in the cemetery cannot be staked by ordinary wood. For whatever reason, the stakes must be fashioned out of wood from the Lostwoods. Most local slayers are aware of this but visiting slayers and newcomers may find themselves in trouble if they haven’t learned this tip from locals.

It’s likely the Labyrinth is highly cursed, and spellcasters who find it usually report feeling uneasy by the dark forces they can feel in the air, like there is a dome of powerful magic over the whole place. Deep in the heart of the underground labyrinth, there may be a way to break the curse.
