Batu Caves, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia . . . Continued⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Here are some more photos from the Batu Caves. There were other Hindu Gods and Goddess's many with their own shrine. It was around 8:30am and just a handful of locals were starting to arrive. They had to wait for blessings because the shrines weren't open yet. Most of them were families with young girls. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ These limestone caves started forming 400 million years ago! Some of them are large and deep and home to a unique array of animals. Unfortunately, that area was close when I was there. In the 1860's early Chinese settlers in the area harvested bat guano for their farms. Then in 1890 an Indian Trader named Pillai began to promote the cave as a place of Hindu worship. He installed the first murti (a consecrated statue) of Murugan in 1892. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Depending on what God or Goddess you are going to see there are many vendors selling traditional offerings like milk and holy basil and ghee candles. The ghee candles were my favorite and had the most amazing smell! ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ It was nice to see the place still being used for traditional practices. Although still very busy and touristy. I promise I have been doing other touristy things too and NOT just swimming in the pool, playing with Kiara the dog. ⠀ ⠀ I went to Batu Caves which sounds like a Kuala Lumpur initiation for most visitors. It is easy to get to and mostly free, with to option to make a donation to any or all 7 of the Hindu shrines in the limestone caves. I went early in the day to avoid the crowds and heat. There are 272 steps leading up into the cave. ⠀ ⠀ The giant gold statue in front is Murugan also known as Kartikeya and this is one of the most popular shrines dedicated to him outside of India. Murugan is mostly worshiped in Southern India by the Tamil people and is the Hindu god of war. He is often represented as a youthful man dressed with weapons sometimes near a rooster and riding or near a peacock. I have been to Calton Hill.  I went there at the end of April 2016 for the incredible Beltane Fire Festival!  It was so cold that night, but totally worth all the frozen toes, I really thought I was dressed warm, ha! the cold air from Scotland fooled the Southern California girl and it was at night!

Go during the day

This time, with my beautiful friend Paula, who if you notice in all of our pictures always takes off her glasses for her photo.  I did manage during our trip to get a very few shots with her glasses on.  I have embraced my inner self and like my glasses now, ok off-topic, back to Calton Hill.

During the day for the most part in it can be sunny or potentially sunny.  At any rate, we were lucky and had a really sunny day!  The walk up to the top via the stairs.. umm.. Sheri still needs to get into shape!  (sorry for the cuss words!)

To the top!

So after my lungs had their workout, to the top we went.  Calton Hill offers such beautiful views of the city and beyond.  Calton Hill has some interesting history and it is worth reading how the past shaped the future.  The Monument you see at the top is the National Monument of Scotland.  It really is a must-see and like I said you can see so much of Edinburgh, even Arthurs Seat (I am going to do that one day too!).

Sorry to all the Scottish people for my really bad accent!  My attempts are always done with respect.  I think my American accent is better though.  At any rate, we enjoyed the morning there on Calton Hill as we planned the rest of our day!
